Junction City Lady Jay varsity volleyball will host Emporia, Topeka West and Topeka High in the season opening quadrangular on Thursday in the Shenk Gym.

Bevil Nevill, Lady Jay Head Coach, said they're starting to iron out roles where players fit junior varsity and varsity. "We're seeing a lot of good things in player development. "But the quality of play going from summer to team dynamic is definitely improving. "

Some of the returning players this season include Taylor Strickland, Megan Hunt and Ava DeGuzman. "We're trying to fill a couple of roles defensively, and some girls are trying to step up and fill that spot." One pleasant surprise has involved some new players in the program. "I'm surprised at some elements that we've seen some move-in's over the summer that are pushing people to compete a little bit harder."

Because of the coronavirus pandemic when you attend the home matches for the Lady Jays, Nevill noted that there will be temperature checks for fans entering and they will be asked to social distance as best as they possibly can.

The Lady junior varsity and freshman teams will compete in Abilene on Tuesday.
