The problem of homeless students landed squarely before Junction City and Geary County Commissioners plus USD 475 Board of Education members Monday. Mayor Pat Landes brought the issue up during a joint meeting at the C.L. Hoover Opera House by noting that there are a lot of students unhoused. "Homelessness is something we're going to have to address. It affects us every year, every day."
Noted during the meeting was a Fresh Start Emrgency Shelter request to the city for $54,000, but that shelter is only open during the daytime from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There was a suggestion to talk with Fresh Start to see what they need to be open 24 hours but it was believed that cost would be about a quarter of a million dollars, which is a daunting amount.
The problem of homeless students ( kids ) came as a surprise to some in the meeting.
There was no final action Monday, but the conversation has begun in the public arena on this difficult issue.
