Kaleb Palmer, Meriden, Kansas and Caleb Burgett, Topeka combined to capture top team honors in the King Kat Tournament Trail regional qualifier sponsored by Cabela's at Milford Lake on Saturday.
They caught five fish with a combined weight of 101 pounds. Their biggest fish weighed approximately 45 pounds, said Palmer. "This fish slammed down an old rod and reel I had and it took drag for probably 15 or 20 seconds. Couldn't get him stopped and it was just a fun fight."
Burgett noted that it was a calm day on the lake with warm weather, and much better than the previous two days where there were gusty winds. The team had practiced fishing on the lake Thursday and Friday before the tournament.
They, along with other top teams in the qualifier, will advance to the King Kat Classic national championships at Milford Lake on Oct. 30 and 31.
Payouts for the top six teams in the qualifier ranged from $300 for sixth place to $3,800 for first place.
Acorns Resort served as the host site for the tournament.
