Julius "Sam" Gassman

Julius (Sam) Gassman, age 84 of Manhattan, Kansas died October 24,2025 at Via Christi hospital in Manhattan due to heart failure.

He was born July 10th 1941in Ness City, Ks. The son of Vincent Gassman and Dorthea (Sauer). Sam graduated from Ness City High School and then joined the army. He served overseas in Frankfurt, Germany for 18 months and then 4 years in the army reserves. After the army Sam worked construction before working at Dillons Grocery for 46 years until he retired in 2013.

After retirement Sam enjoyed going to garage sales and having coffee with friends. He especially enjoyed "Sams Club" which consisted of the gathering of the neighborhood gentlemen around his garage to discuss the various topics of the day.

Sam is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Betty Stoecklein) whom he married on May 12, 1962 in Ness City, Kansas; his son Bruce Gassman of Wamego, Kansas; and three sisters, Josephine Cooper of North Platte, Nebraska, Agnes (Marie) Smith of Wichita, Kansas and Louise (Leda) and husband Richard Meles of Poland, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Jennifer Gassman and four brothers: Ralph, Richard, Severin, and Robert and five sisters: Lucille, Eleanora, Virginia, Ubertina and Florence

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday November 22, 2025, at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan at 11:00a.m. Private inurnment will be held at the St. Thoams More Catholic Church Columbarium.

Memorial contributions in memory of Sam are suggested to the St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
