MANHATTAN - On Monday, March 18th, around 4:00 am, Riley County Police officers responded to a report of an aggressive dog in the northwest part of Manhattan.
Initially dispatchers at the Riley County Communications Center were told the dog had bitten a child.
When officers arrived on the scene they found a dog, which acted aggressively towards an officer, who discharged his firearm at the dog, as a defensive response to the dog's behavior.
City of Manhattan Animal Control personnel promptly took over care of the dog, transfer it to Kansas State University Veterinary Services for necessary medical attention.
After a thorough investigation of the situation, RCPD officers determined the reporting person was under the influence when they reported the incident.
The dog bite incident, referenced while speaking with dispatch, had occurred a year prior and the child was confirmed to be safe within the residence.
The dog is expected to recover from the injuries.
Due to this situation being part of a domestic violence situation, no additional details will be released.
Riley County Police Department wants to assure the public that they are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, including valued animal companions.
