Geary Community Hospital and the financial problems faced by that entity drew attention during a joint Geary County Commission - legislative delegation meeting this past week.

Trish Giordano, Commission Chair, noted that the community needs to come together and figure out the options,"and then maybe go to the state and ask for some help. I'm not sure what they can do but we definitely need to work on this and it needs to be a priority."

County officials learned recently that $28 million in maintenance work will be needed at the hospital within the next four years, including $12 million in the next year.

Commissioners learned during the meeting with legislators that the state does have some COVID-19 money remaining, but whether it could be used for the hospital is not known. That may not be possible. Officials are also looking at grant possibilities and possible partnerships.

Giordano feels town hall meetings on the hospital's financial challenges should be held.
