Sunset Zoo release

(Manhattan, Kan. – Sunday, April 20, 2025) – Sunset Zoo has announced its official certification as a Sensory Inclusive™ facility through a new partnership with KultureCity®, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting accessibility and inclusion for individuals with sensory needs.

KultureCity’s Sensory Inclusive™ program is recognized nationally and internationally for its groundbreaking approach to equipping public spaces—such as venues, museums, and cultural institutions—with the tools and training needed to better support guests with sensory sensitivities. Through this partnership, all Sunset Zoo staff received specialized training from leading medical professionals and individuals with lived experience, focusing on how to recognize guests with sensory needs and how to support them in the event of sensory overload.

To further enhance the experience, Sunset Zoo now offers sensory bags at no cost to guests who may feel overwhelmed by the environment, conveniently located for pick up and drop off at the Ticket Booth and Concession Stand. These bags are equipped with noise-canceling headphones (provided by Puro Sound Labs), fidget tools, verbal cue cards, and weighted lap pads—resources designed to create a more inclusive and comfortable visit for all.

Sensory sensitivities are commonly associated with individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD, and similar conditions—regardless of age. With a range of stimulating sounds, crowds, and activity, the Zoo environment can be overwhelming for some visitors. Sunset Zoo’s commitment to this program ensures that everyone has the opportunity to fully engage with nature, animals, and conservation education in a supportive space.

Families planning their visit are encouraged to download the free KultureCity® app, which includes detailed information about the Zoo’s sensory-friendly features, including a customized Social Story to help visitors know what to expect and prepare for their Zoo experience.
