
Tornado safety and impacts were the focus of a public training session at the Geary County 4-H / Senior Center Monday evening.
Meteorologist Chad Omit said Kansas annually ranks second in the nation in the number of tornadoes. The 30-year average is 80 with the count totaling 76 in 2024. The state has had 47 EF-2 tornadoes in the past 10 years.
Tornadoes can occur any time but the worst months are May and June. The National Weather Service emphasizes that bicycle helmets are important for protection in a tornado. If you live in a mobile home have a plan to leave and seek shelter elsewhere.
Tornadoes can often occur in organized supercells with low level precipitation.
Attendance at the meeting was estimated at approximately 70 people.
