Geary County Offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19 in commemoration of Juneteenth. This includes the Geary County Public Works Department, HHW/Recycling Center, and the County Landfill. The Geary County Transfer Station will remain OPEN.
The Emancipation Proclamation, an edict issued by President Abraham Lincoln freeing the enslaved, went into effect January 1, 1863. The information did not reach all parts of the Confederate south for over two years, June 19, 1865, now commemorated as Juneteenth. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
