City of Manhattan Press release and photos

Last night’s storm brought strong winds and heavy rain, causing flooding, downed trees, and downed power lines across Manhattan.

City crews worked through the night to clear debris from major roadways. At this time, up to 30 roads remain blocked or partially obstructed. Crews will continue working to reopen streets as quickly as possible.

If you're able, please help those around you.

Since 10 p.m. last night, the Manhattan Fire Department has responded to more than 100 calls for service, and reports of downed power lines are still coming in.

Utility crews delivered generators to sewer lift stations as needed. Both the water treatment plant and wastewater treatment facility have power and have not needed backup generators. Anthony Rec Center is without power, but we hope that will be restored by noon.

This storm caused more damage than other storms this season. Travel may still be hazardous. Please use caution, avoid flooded roadways, and stay away from downed power lines. Always assume power lines are energized.

If you see downed power lines, call 911.

*Crews are now  focusing on clearing streets and opening roadways. That work will take several days to complete. Please continue to use extreme caution as limbs, downed power lines, and debris are hazardous.

When streets are clear, crews will start citywide cleanup efforts. Please pile limbs and yard debris at the curb, like you do for spring cleanup. Crews are expecting to start neighborhood cleanup on Monday, June 15. No household waste (like shingles, boards, fences, etc) will be picked up. We will ONLY pick up limbs, branches, and yard debris.

We'll follow up with more information as plans are finalized. We are also under a heat advisory this afternoon, with heat index values up to 107 degrees expected. Use caution if working outdoors. Take frequent breaks, stay hydrated, and go indoors to a cool place.
