Lady Jay tennis player qualifies for state

The Lady Jay tennis team competed in their Regional Tennis Tournament in Topeka on Friday and Saturday.  Abby Ratts, competing in singles for the Lady Jays, qualified for the 6A State Tennis tournament by finishing in 6th place. 

In the first round, Ratts won her first match over Derby in a third set super tiebreaker.  She lost the second round to the #2 seed in the tournament from Washburn Rural.  In her third round to qualify for the state tennis tournament, she won a match that lasted over three hours 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 over her opponent from Wichita East. 

The Lady Jay’s other singles player, Rachel Cho, also won her first round match defeating Wichita Southeast in the first round 6-1, 6-3.  She then dropped her next two matches to be eliminated from the regional tournament.  In doubles Hannah Ratts and Grace Harris dropped their first round to Derby’s top doubles team 6-2, 6-2 and Stephanie Stanislow and Avery Jacobsen lost to Derby’s other team 6-1, 6-2. 

Nine teams competed in the 2 day regional tournament.  Washburn Rural won the team championship.  Junction City finished in 5th place.  The 6A State Tennis Tournament will be held on October 15-16 at the Ralph Wulz Riverside Tennis Center in Wichita.
