Geary County and Fort Riley authorities conducted a controlled burn of what is called Government Hill on Tuesday. The grassland burning was on the large hill on the south side of I-70 across from the Marshall Army Airfield.
According to Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges firefighters were to tie in the fire at the top and then work from the bottom by letting the fire race up the hill.
For safety reasons drivers on I-70 just north of the burn were asked not to stop their vehicles to look or take photos of the site.
According to Emergency Management there were numerous controlled burns in Geary County on Tuesday. It was a relatively calm day as far as winds were concerned.
