KHP IDs man struck and killed by school bus in Clay Center

CLAY COUNTY—A Clay Center man died in an accident just after 6:30a.m. Tuesday in Clay Center.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Blue Bird school bus driven by Brenda G. Peterson, 71, Clay Center, was eastbound on Lincoln Avenue approaching Sixth Street.

The driver failed to see a pedestrian identified as Harold R. Mugler, 69, Clay Center, who was walking southbound across Lincoln Avenue in the crosswalk.  The bus hit Mugler.   No students were on the bus when the accident occurred, according to USD 379.

Mugler was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported Neill Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.

CLAY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities and officials with USD 379 are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident involving a school bus in Clay Center. 

Just after 7a.m. Tuesday, officials notified the Kansas Highway Patrol of the accident at 6th and Lincoln in Clay Center. No students were on the bus when the accident occurred, according to the school district.

The pedestrian crossing the road southbound at the time of being hit. This did not occur within a school zone, according to Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Gardner.
