UPDATE from RCPD: Graffiti in bathroom caused lockdown

UPDATE 5:41 p.m. Friday, February 17, 2023: According to RCPD, Manhattan High School(MHS) West Campus was cleared around 4:40 pm. on Friday, after graffiti found on a toilet paper dispenser in a school bathroom, was shared on Snapchat, causing school administration to put the building in lockdown.

RCPD School Resource Officer and the MHS principal were made aware of the message being sent on social media around 2:00 p.m. Multiple officers responded to investigate the situation, while school officials initiated the building's lockdown procedures.

Officers quickly determined the message was not credible and no students were in danger. A decision was then made to evacuate the building room by room with officers escorting each group, to ensure safety of all students and staff.

The origin of the message is still being investigated. 

RCPD would like to thank USD 383 for their continued assistance and cooperation in keeping our children safe.

RCPD will continue to respond to any threats at any of our schools as the safety of our community’s children is and will remain a top priority.

UPDATE: From RCPD: Multiple officers are on-scene investigating a message found in one of the school bathrooms.

The message was then spread through social media, RCPD says they do not believe there is a credible threat.

The school was placed on lockdown by school administrators while RCPD officers continue to investigate the situation.

This incident is NOT connected to yesterday's events at elementary schools.

MANHATTAN - USD 383 posted to social media that Manhattan High School is currently on a lockdown following a threat made on social media.

Riley County Police Department officers are on scene.

District officials are asking families and public to stay away from the school at this time.

USD 383 will release more information as it becomes available.
