Dwayne A. Nichols, age 87, of Manhattan, died October 21, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System – St. Francis Campus in Topeka.

He was born January 7, 1936, in Mankato, Kansas, the son of George A. and Marjorie (Kyle) Nichols, and had been a Manhattan resident for 65 years.

Dwayne served in the United States Navy for four years in active duty, and then 4 years in active reserves.

Following his military service he worked for Wilbert Vault Company, and then was a fireman for the City of Manhattan for four years, and then worked for Burr Electric for several years prior to owning and operating Burr Electric for many years.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Dwayne was an avid hunter and fisherman.

On January 13, 1956, in Bremerton, Washington, he was married to Karen I. “Jackie” Boldt. Jackie survives of the home. Additional survivors include three children: Marcus Allen Nichols, of Manhattan, Melissa Elaine Zeller of Abilene, KS and Shanda Ann White of Manhattan; brothers and sisters: Burton Nichols of Marian, TX, Franklin Nichols of Cedar City, UT, Byron Nichols of Universal City, TX, and Margaret Elaine Nichols of Marian, TX; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, his friend and longtime caregiver Debi Plummer and her daughter Susie Oliveria; and he was loved by 11 nieces and eight nephews.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his parents; one son Jonathan George Nichols and by two sisters: Barbara Nolf and Kathy Lewis.

Private family graveside service were held at Carnahan Creek Cemetery with Pastor Mark Roberts officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice in Dwayne’s name. The Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS, 66502, assisted the family with services.
