Milton Otto Henneberg, 95, of Onaga, Kansas, died Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at the Onaga Health and Rehab Center. He was a lifelong resident of the area.
Milton was born on June 16, 1928, in Wheaton, Kansas, the son of Louis W. and Esther (Force) Henneberg. He attended local grade school and graduated in 1946 from Wheaton High School.
Milton was a farmer and stockman, working on the family farm most of his adult life. During WWII, as many local farmers, Milton helped with the war effort by not only raising the food needed by our nation but also, he was a civilian plane spotter and counter. He was known for his Angus cattle and was recognized by the Angus Association for having the longest continuous commercial Angus herd in the state of Kansas. Milton also worked as a rural mail carrier part-time for twenty-five years and full-time for ten years.
Milton was a member of the Kansas Rural Letter Carriers Association, a past member of the Wheaton School Board, and a board member for the Rural Water District #3. He served on the boards of the Onaga Rural Hospital and the PR&W Rural Electric. Milton was an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and served as Sunday School Superintendent for several years. He always had a beautiful yard and was very particular about its care and the flowers. Milton loved to read and was a writer. As historian he was very interested in Native American history. Milton loved to hunt for arrow heads in the fields surrounding his farm and had an impressive collection. He was a man who cared about the people around him.
Milton married Dorothy Mae Honig on April 17, 1949, in Duluth, Kansas. After 69 years of their lives intertwined, Dorothy preceded him in death on July 26, 2018.
Milton is survived by his children, Deborah Berges (Eugene), Onaga, Jan Newman (Bryce), Burlingame, Susan Magnett, (Roger), Wheaton, Woodrow Henneberg (Linda), Wheaton, and Tammy Lierz (Alan), Manhattan; his two granddaughters and twelve grandsons; his eight great- granddaughters, twenty-three great-grandsons, and one great-great-grandson; his sister, Eva Brunkow (Duane), Topeka, brother-in-law, George Welch, Topeka, and sister-in-law, Jean Northup, Wamego. Milton was also preceded in death by his parents, and infant granddaughter, Sarah Henneberg, and his siblings, Faye Wirt, Mary Smith, Dean Henneberg, Vera Marten, and Frances Welch.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton. Reverend Terry DeGiovanni will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Wheaton Congregational Cemetery. Milton will lie-in-state Monday, August 21st, at Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego beginning at 4:00 pm, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. A Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. They suggest memorial contributions to the Wheaton Congregational Cemetery or St. Luke Lutheran Church, and those may be sent in care of the funeral home.
