Carolyn J. Hertel, 86, died Thursday, March 30, 2023, at The Ranch House
in Garden City, Kansas. She was born August 30, 1936, in Larned,
Kansas, the daughter of Dee & Isabel (Shasteen) Klein.
Carolyn grew up with her family on a farm East of Hanston, Kansas.
She attended schools in Burdett and Hanston and graduated from Hanston
High School in 1954. She then attended nurses training in Great Bend,
Kansas. Carolyn worked for a short time at a nurse’s aide and
receptionist at St. Joseph Hospital in Larned. On May 11, 1956, she
married Harold J. Hertel in Hanston, Kansas. They have lived in Garden
City since. Carolyn worked for 35 years at Fidelity State Bank as a
teller and assistant cashier before retiring as a Vice President in the
mid 1990’s.
Carolyn was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City and
was a past President of the Kansas Women’s Banking Association. She
enjoyed spending her time traveling with her husband Harold, reading,
gardening, and canning.
Survivors include her husband Harold J. Hertel of the home; two
children Melissa (David) Horning of Garden City, KS and Michael (Brenda)
Hertel of Cave Creek, Arizona; four brothers Robert Klein of Hanston,
KS, Eldon Klein of Dodge City, KS, Jody Klein of Wright, KS, & Steve
Klein of Enid, OK; three sisters Kay Woods of Manhattan, KS, Donna
Sherman of Wichita, KS, & Barbara Krenzel of McPherson, KS; and two
grandchildren Krystal Horning and Nicholas Horning. Carolyn is preceded
in death by her parents; two brothers Richard Klein and Jack Klein; and
three sisters Phyllis Allison, Ruby Rebel, & Pat Martin.
A Vigil service & Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday,
April 3, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass
will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, also at St. Mary
Catholic Church in Garden City with Fr. Jacob Schneider as Celebrant.
Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may
call from Noon to 5:30 p.m. on Monday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden
City.
