LOS ANGELES (AP) — A federal judge on Wednesday handed down a sentence of 15 years in prison to a woman who pleaded guilty to selling actor&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/matthew-perry">Matthew Perry</a>&nbsp;the ketamine that killed him in 2023.

“You’re going to have to show some epic resilience,” Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett said to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/matthew-perry-ketamine-queen-jasveen-sangha-1dc202d407d3d5163abc87fa63c35423">Jasveen Sangha</a>, echoing the defendant's words earlier in the hearing about her self-improvement.

Citing the unique role Sangha admitted to playing in Perry’s death and her broader drug-dealing business, the judge gave the 42-year-old a sentence that will almost certainly be more than all four of her co-defendants combined.

The hearing Wednesday in a Los Angeles courtroom was in many ways the pinnacle of the 2 1/2-year investigation and prosecution that followed the overdose death of the 54-year-old actor, whose role as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/matthew-perry-dead-drowning-friends-f2963e83691d2bd2a8626d85a69c73cb">Chandler Bing on NBC’s “Friends”</a>&nbsp;in the 1990s and 2000s made him one of the biggest television stars of the era.

Keith Morrison, Perry’s stepfather and correspondent for NBC’s “Dateline,” told the judge that he and Perry’s mother, Suzanne, feel a “daily, grinding sadness and sorrow.”

“There was a spark to that man I have never seen anywhere else,” Morrison said. “He should have had another act. Two more acts.”

Just before she was sentenced,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/matthew-perry-ketamine-queen-jasveen-sangha-plea-86fc25a95831068fd83f0448a973a300">Sangha</a>&nbsp;told the judge she wears her shame “like a jacket.”

“These were not mistakes. They were horrible decisions,” Sangha said, which “shattered people’s lives and the lives of their family and friends.”

Prosecutors secured the exact sentence they asked for after casting Sangha as a “Ketamine Queen” who had an elaborate drug operation catering to high-end clients to give herself a jet-setting lifestyle.

Sangha’s attorneys argued the time she has spent in jail since her August 2024 indictment should be sufficient, pointing to her good behavior behind bars and lack of prior arrests.

Perry was found dead in the hot tub at his Los Angeles home in October 2023. The medical examiner&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ketamine-matthew-perry-death-charges-drug-1f6bc37573a44408146e42260b689de4">ruled that ketamine,</a>&nbsp;typically used as a surgical anesthetic, was the primary cause of death — and drowning was a secondary cause.

Mark Geragos, Sangha’s attorney, said “pernicious” addiction was truly responsible for Perry’s death, not his client.

“There was nobody who was going to stop Mr. Perry from doing what he was going to do,” Geragos said.

In September, Sangha became the last of five co-defendants to plead guilty, admitting to one count of using her home for drug distribution, three counts of distribution of ketamine, and one count of distribution of ketamine resulting in death.

Geragos denounced the prosecution's use of the moniker “Ketamine Queen,” blaming it on E. Martin Estrada, the U.S. attorney when the case was filed.

"That was not her name, that was his very clever name to draw media attention this case," Geragos said.

Perry had been using the drug through his regular doctor as a legal off-label treatment for depression. But he sought more than the doctor would give him. That at first led him to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/matthew-perry-ketamine-sentence-plasencia-friends-698adf35023c42e73313f6603e6ac009">Dr. Salvador Plasencia</a>, who admitted to illegally selling Perry ketamine and was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison. And, days before his death, it led Perry to Sangha, and a $6,000 cash buy that included the lethal dose.

Another doctor, who admitted to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/matthew-perry-death-ketamine-doctor-sentencing-31a0d227960c970f995e7fe873843cfe">providing Plasencia the ketamine</a>&nbsp;he sold to Perry, was sentenced to eight months of home detention. Perry’s assistant and his friend, who admitted acting as the actor’s middlemen, are awaiting sentencing.

The judge said she was trying to carefully calibrate the sentences for the five defendants. She expressed concern about the balance during the hearing, asking lawyers why Sangha deserved so much more time than Plasencia or Perry's assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, who obtained and injected the drugs at Perry's request and injected them into him.

Geragos seized on this and said the disparity was outrageous.

“The person who supplies the ammunition, they're more culpable than the person who pulls the trigger?” he asked.

But before sentencing, Garnett said the size of Sangha's drug business, the years she spent dealing and her long list of clients clearly made her more culpable. And she said she believed Sangha's lack of a criminal history was underrepresented.

The judge also cited Sangha's continued dealing after learning through a text message from his sister that one of her customers, 33-year-old Cody McLaury, had died in 2019.

The sister, Kimberly McLaury, spoke in court.

“Had you stopped selling ketamine when I texted you, we wouldn't be here today,” she said.

Perry’s stepmother Debbie Perry told Sangha she had caused pain for “hundreds, maybe thousands” of people.

The judge commended Sangha for the “countless” letters of support she got from family and friends touting her decency and loving nature. Many of them were there in court, sitting on the opposite side from Perry's family.

“There's no joy in this process,” Garnett told the victim's family members. “Maybe at the end of the day you will feel a sense of justice.”

Doctor going to prison for selling Matthew Perry the drugs that killed him

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a series of business burglaries over the past several months in northeast Kansas have made an arrest.

The burglaries targeted at least eight Topeka owned businesses starting in the Fall 2025 through April 2, 2026, according to a media release from police. As a result of their investigation, police arrested Eric D. Swopes, 52, of Topeka.

The following Topeka businesses were involved in the alleged crimes.

Yolk House; Circle Coffee;&nbsp;&nbsp;Milk and Honey (attempted burglary); Crispy &amp; Co / Hanebe; Golden Dragon;&nbsp;Indian Bistro; Mexican Taco Shop and El Ranchito

&nbsp;Swopes was transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections and is being held on requested charges related to burglary and attempted burglary. Additional charges may be filed pending review by the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office.

It is believed that Swopes may be involved in more cases in Topeka and surrounding communities.

Police: Kansas man arrested for multiple business burglaries

WICHITA, KAN. – A Kansas woman was sentenced to 240 months in prison after being caught with a massive quantity of fentanyl pills that she admitted she intended to sell.&nbsp;

According to court documents, Mana Elena Reyes, 51, of Wichita pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.&nbsp;

Between April 2023 and May 2023, Reyes had multiple discussions about purchasing and selling methamphetamine and fentanyl with an individual she was unaware was an undercover officer with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office (SGSO). Deputies then followed her as she drove from Kansas to Oklahoma and back. The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) conducted a traffic stop and a search of Reyes’ vehicle yielded approximately 115,000 fentanyl pills and more than 4,000 grams of methamphetamine along with heroin, fentanyl powder, and cocaine.&nbsp;

“The United States Sentencing Commission reports that arrests for fentanyl trafficking have steadily increased over the past few years. Upon conviction, the average prison sentence handed down is 74 months, so this defendant will serve more than three times that average,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser. “Our office is extremely pleased with the outcome in this case and will continue to seek stiff penalties for drug trafficking. Illegal drugs, particularly fentanyl and methamphetamine, are a scourge and will not be tolerated in our communities.”

Kansas woman had  115,000 fentanyl pills to sell

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement investigating a weekend homicide in Kansas City, Missouri have identified the victim as 19-year-old&nbsp;Alexander Richardson, according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

Just after 7:30p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to a shooting in the 5700 block of Askew in Kansas City, according to Officer Alayna Gonzalez. Numerous calls for service continued to come in advising a shooting had occurred.

Officers responded to the scene and located Richardson lying in the street, unresponsive and suffering from believed gunshot trauma near 58th and Askew. 

Officers checked for a pulse and attempted to render any possible medical aid. EMS personnel responded shortly after and pronounced Richardson deceased on scene.

Preliminary information indicates there was an interaction between Richardson and multiple unknown male susects. That interaction escalated into gunfire. The suspects left the scene in an unknown direction.&nbsp;

Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel responded to the scene to begin collecting any evidence and gathering witness statements. Several individuals in the area have assisted responding law-enforcement officers in gathering viable information to help police better understand what happened.&nbsp; Police have not reported an arrest.

On April 4, police arrested 34-year-old Allan L. Copeland, Jr. of Atchison, for theft that occurred at Walmart, 1920 U.S .73, in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson. The crimes occurred between December 9, 2025 and January 28, 2026. Taken to County Jail.

He was also issued a notice to appear in court for criminal trespass at Walmart, 1920 U.S. 73, that occurred on April 3.

Kansas man jailed for 2 month crime spree at same retailer

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a shooting that critically injured a woman have arrested the suspect.

On Monday afternoon,&nbsp;Wichita Police Department issued an attempting to locate for 28-year-old Jeremiah Cardenas of Wichita, in connection with&nbsp; shooting in Wichita.&nbsp; Police arrested him a short time later.

Just before 4a.m. Monday,&nbsp;police responded to a shooting call in the 1500 block of South Seneca, according to Officer Bradley Wright.

Once officers arrived, they found a 40-year-old Wichita woman with multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to a local hospital by EMS in critical but stable condition. Wright confirmed that the shooting did not happen at the location in the 1500 block of South Seneca. Investigators are working to identify the actual scene of the shooting.

Cardenas is being held on requested charges that include domestic battery, criminal damage to property, criminal threat, criminal possession of a weapon and aggravated battery.

Police: Kansas woman critically injured in shooting, suspect in custody

SEDGWICK COUNTY—&nbsp;A Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office detention deputy was arrested Saturday, on a misdemeanor charge of buying sexual relations, according to sheriff's department spokesman Branden Stitt.

Diego Rubio-Mancha, 22, of Maize, was arrested by the Park City Police Department and booked into the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility on a single count of buying sexual relations.

Rubio-Mancha joined the Sheriff’s Office as a detention deputy in February 2024. The Sheriff’s Office placed him on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.&nbsp; He met the requirement for bail and is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

Kansas jail deputy is jailed for allegedly buying sexual relations

&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. (JASO) – Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple drug allegations.

Just after 6p.m. April 4, Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a free air sniff with a K-9 around a Chrysler Sebring that was parked in the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Jail parking lot, according to&nbsp;Sheriff Tim Morse.

The K-9 alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics. Deputies seized illegal drug contraband from the vehicle. The registered owner of the vehicle, Lisa Ann Guffey, 61, of Holton, who came to the jail for visitation purposes, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —The Wichita Police Department is attempting to locate 28-year-old Jeremiah Cardenas of Wichita, in connection with a shooting in the 1500 block of South Seneca.

Cardenas is described as 6-foot-2 inches tall, 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He is&nbsp;potentially armed and dangerous.

Police: Suspect who shot Kansas woman is in custody

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A former&nbsp;Sedgwick County Department of Corrections employee accused of unlawful sexual relations with an inmate made his first court appearance last week.

&nbsp;Jonah K. Bundy 29, Goddard, was charged with unlawful sexual relations with an inmate, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

On March 30, deputies arrested Bundy and booked him into the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

In January 2026, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of an alleged inappropriate relationship and began an investigation. Detectives determined Bundy, who worked as a correctional officer at the Sedgwick County Adult Residential Facility, allegedly engaged in a relationship with a client in December 2025.

Bundy resigned his position with the Sedgwick County Department of Corrections before the investigation.

Bundy has met the requirement for a $100,000 bond and is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating another homicide in Kansas City, Missouri.

Officers responded to the scene and located a man lying in the street, unresponsive and suffering from believed gunshot trauma near 58th and Askew. 

Officers checked for a pulse and attempted to render any possible medical aid. EMS personnel responded shortly after and pronounced the victim deceased on scene.

Preliminary information indicates there was an interaction between the victim and multiple unknown male susects. That interaction escalated into gunfire. The suspects left the scene in an unknown direction.&nbsp;

Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel responded to the scene to begin collecting any evidence and gathering witness statements. Several individuals in the area have assisted responding law-enforcement officers in gathering viable information to help police better understand what happened.&nbsp; Police have not reported an arrest and have not released the name of the suspect.

Homicide: 1 dead after shooting on Easter in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY— A Kansas City man was sentenced in federal court last week for his involvement in drug trafficking and the illegal possession of a firearm.

Brandon R. Haywood, 47, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays to 20 years in federal prison without parole for possessing with the intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, and felon in possession of a firearm.&nbsp; Haywood was convicted of those offenses at the conclusion of a jury trial held in September 2025.

On Feb. 4, 2023, law enforcement officers were dispatched to a store in Independence, Mo., regarding a sexual assault, for which Haywood is charged in Jackson County, Mo., Circuit Court.&nbsp; 

On Feb. 15, 2023, Haywood returned to the same store and was arrested by officers.&nbsp; His vehicle was towed from the scene in anticipation of a search warrant.&nbsp; When the state search warrant was executed on his vehicle, investigators located a Glock, Model 23, .40 caliber firearm; the defendant’s wallet; and approximately 30 grams of cocaine in the center console.&nbsp;Prior to this incident, Haywood was convicted of the felony offense of Voluntary Manslaughter in Jackson County, Mo., Circuit Court.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

KC man arrested after he returned to scene of sex assault

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a fatal officer shooting have identified the suspect who died as&nbsp;45-year-old Benjamin David Board, according to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's office.

Just after 9a.m. Wednesday, the United State's Marshal's service and a Wichita Police Department SWAT team learned that a suspect identified as Board, with a warrant for 8 counts for sexual exploitation of a child, was at an apartment in the 9200 Block of East Harry in Wichita, according to&nbsp;Wichita Police Department Captain Aaron Moses.

Officers also learned that Board was armed and had stated he was going to get into a 'shootout with police when he was located.'

Around noon, Board left the apartment and officers attempted to stop him in&nbsp;the 8900 Block of East Cherry Creek in Wichita.&nbsp; Police identified themselves to Board and told him he was under arrest. Board produced a firearm which led to one Wichita Police Department officer firing his weapon at Board.&nbsp; &nbsp;Board was struck multiple times.

Officers began life saving measures and called for EMS. Board was pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp; The Sedgwick County Sheriff's office is in charge of the officer shooting investigation.

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas felon on multiple allegations after an arrest.

Just after 8a.m. on Thursday police responded to an apartment complex in the 1200 block North 5th Street in Atchison to investigate a suspicious person, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Officers located Maurice Burnett who was taken into custody on requested charges of disorderly conduct and a Kansas Department of Corrections detain order for parole violation. He was subsequently found to be in possession of methamphetamine.&nbsp;

Burnett has a dozen previous convictions that include burglary, theft, battery, evade a road block and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

RILEY COUNTY— The Riley County Police Department has arrested a registered sex offender in connection with an investigation involving sexual exploitation of a child, according to a media release.

As a result of the investigation, Phillip Andrew Dews, 32, of Manhattan, was arrested at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Manhattan.

 He is being held on a  $1,000,000 bond on requested charges that include five counts of violating the offender registration act, five counts of perjury, four counts of aggravated violation of the offender registration act, one count of sexual exploitation of a child; possess media of child under the age of 18, and one count of aggravated internet trading in child pornography.

JOHNSON COUNTY — A man extradited from El Salvador is going to prison for the murder of a Kansas woman

Last month a Johnson County Judge sentenced 44-year-old Angel Maria Herrera, of Shawnee, Kansas to 50-years in prison and an additional 34months for aggravated burglary., according to the Johson County District Attorney.

In January, a jury found Herrera guilty in the death of 30-year-old Maria Morfin-Rojas of Lenexa.

On September 15, 2005, police responded to the report of suspicious activity at an apartment in the 11900 block of W. 77th Terrace in Lenexa, according to a media release. Officers arrived and found Maria Morfin-Rojas of Lenexa. She had been stabbed to death.&nbsp;

Lenexa detectives quickly identified a suspect in this case, identified as Herrera. Detectives learned that Herrera fled the United States into Mexico a few days prior to the discovery of Morfin-Rojas’ body at the Lenexa apartment.

On September 17, 2005, the Johnson County District Attorney’s charged Herrera with 1st Degree Murder in this case, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On April 27, 2023, detectives were notified that Herrera had been arrested in El Salvador and was being held pending extradition to the United States.

A detective for the Lenexa Police Department who has been working on this case since 2005 flew to El Salvador along with federal agents to take custody of Herrera and extradite him back to Johnson County.

The investigation, arrest, extradition and prosecution of Herrera are the culmination of many years of diligent work by Lenexa officers, detectives, the Johnson County Crime Lab, the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and others who have tirelessly sought for justice for Maria Morfin-Rojas.

Prison for man who hid in El Salvador after Kan. woman's murder

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a Missouri man on drug allegations.

Just after 9p.m. March 29,&nbsp; a sheriff’s deputy stopped a white Chevrolet Avalanche for an alleged traffic infraction on 150th Road near Q.4 Road, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

Tiger Woods expressed astonishment as he was handcuffed after crashing his vehicle last week in Florida, according to body camera footage released Thursday.

“I do believe your normal faculties are impaired, and you’re under an unknown substance, so at this time you’re under arrest for DUI,” Martin County Sheriff’s deputy Tatiana Levenar told Woods after conducting a sobriety test on the golfer.

Woods said he was looking at his phone and changing the radio station when his speeding Land Rover clipped the back of a truck&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/florida-golf-tiger-woods-dui-dcec962e03e2bae3c8940c104d2575c1">and rolled onto its side</a>&nbsp;on a residential road on Jupiter Island.

“I’m being arrested?” Woods responded as he stood alongside the road.

The video also shows that officers found pills in Tiger Woods’ pocket after the crash.

“That’s a Norco,” Woods said after an officer pulled out two white pills, referring to a painkiller that contains acetaminophen and hydrocodone. Authorities would later confirm they found that Woods was in possession of hydrocodone.

In the bodycam footage, Woods told Levenar that he had not drunk any alcohol and that he had taken “a few” medications earlier in the day, though Woods’ words are muted in the released video as he describes some of the drugs.

Woods entered a not guilty plea on Tuesday to suspicion of driving under the influence. He posted a statement Tuesday night saying that he was stepping away indefinitely “to seek treatment and focus on my health.”

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A driver accused in a fatal hit-and-run crash is due back in court on Thursday.

Madelyn Walter, 24, Derby, will attend a preliminary hearing is the courtroom of Judge Rodger Woods, according tot he Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In December, she was charged with with involuntary manslaughter while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and leaving the scene of an accident, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Just after 5 p.m. February 6, 2025, deputies, Sedgwick County EMS and Sedgwick County Fire District #1 responded to a hit-and-run crash at 47th Street South and Clifton in Wichita, according to Sheriff's Department spokesman Branden Stitt.

Witnesses reported that a red Dodge Nitro was traveling south on Clifton when it failed to yield to an eastbound Ford Fiesta and struck the vehicle in the intersection.&nbsp;

The impact caused the driver of the Fiesta, identified as 75-year-old&nbsp; Manolopoulos Panagiotis of Wichita, to be ejected and then struck by his own car.

Sedgwick County EMS transported Panagiotis to a Wichita hospital in extremely critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries at 10:46 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;The driver of the Nitro, later identified as Walter, fled the scene following the collision.

Thanks to witness reports and information provided to 911 dispatchers, deputies utilized the Flock license plate reader system to locate the suspect vehicle in the parking lot of the Walmart in Derby. With assistance from the Derby Police Department Walter was found at a nearby Derby residence.
