OSAGE COUNTY&nbsp; —A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging Todd James Lewis, 54, of Carbondale, on seven counts of wire fraud, one count of aggravated identity theft, and one count of theft of government funds, according to the United State's Attorney.

The FBI and the U.S. Department of Labor are investigating the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine Kenney is prosecuting the case.

Kansas man accused of aggravated identity theft

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A woman who was acquitted in July of killing her teenage daughter but convicted of abandoning the girl's corpse was sentenced Thursday but will be released from prison soon.

Rebecca Ruud was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arkansas-missouri-springfield-99ef9a559538610ac6a15215f28393b2">acquitted in the death of</a>&nbsp;16-year-old Savannah Leckie, who moved to Ruud's farm after leaving her adoptive home in Minnesota. Ruud gave the girl up for adoption as a baby.

But Ruud was convicted of abandoning the girl's corpse, which was found on a burn pile at Ruud's property on the Arkansas-Missouri border in July 2017.

She was sentenced to four years in prison Thursday and fined $5,000. But she will be given credit for the five years she has been in prison since her arrest, meaning she will be freed after prison officials process her release, the Springfield News-Leader&nbsp;<a href="https://www.news-leader.com/story/news/2022/09/15/rebecca-ruud-sentenced-burning-her-daughters-remains-charges-dropped-husband/10378363002/">reported</a>.

During her trial, Ruud's attorneys argued that Leckie died by suicide and Ruud panicked and burned her body after finding her dead.

After the bench trial, Greene County Circuit Court Judge Calvin Holden ruled that the state did not present enough evidence to support a murder charge.

Murder charges against Ruud’s husband, Robert Peat Jr., were dismissed Thursday shortly before Ruud's sentencing.

Leckie's adoptive mother, Tamile Leckie-Montague, has said the girl&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/06c25302ea1f4efa92ac73c9cdb46a77">went to live with Ruud in 2016</a>&nbsp;because she was having behavioral problems.

Woman acquitted of killing teen daughter to be free soon

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon after a violent altercation with a police officer.

Just after 2 p.m. Friday, an officer stopped a suspicious person walking along the road near SE 23rd and SE Minnesota for having an open container of beer, according to Police Sgt. Gene Dixon. During the stop, the man gave multiple fake names interfering with the officer’s investigation. 

Once the officer could identify the man’s true identity as 45-year-old Kevin N. Teeter Jr., the officer discovered that Teeter had multiple felony warrants for his arrest.

When the officer attempted to take Teeter into custody, Teeter drew a large “Samuraistyle knife,” causing an officer in danger call to be broadcast. The officer pulled out his weapon, and Teeter dropped the sword and ran into the backyard of a nearby house.

A struggle ensued between Teeter and the officer in the backyard. Teeter grabbed a brick and confronted the officer with it. Assisting officers arrived and used less-lethal beanbag rounds in an attempt to disarm Teeter. 

Police eventually took Teeter into custody. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to Dixon.

After he was medically cleared, detectives interviewed Teeter and then booked into the Shawnee County Department of requested charges of Two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Felony Interference with a Law Enforcement Officer, Fugitive from Justice, Outside Agency warrant, Violate offender registration act.

Teeter has previous convictions for rape, aggravated sexual battery and for drugs, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Police: Kan. sex offender was armed with 'samurai-style' knife

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. – Law enforcement authorities are investigating a woman on drug allegations after a traffic stop.

Just after 3:30a.m. Sept. 14, a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2011 Chevrolet sedan for a traffic infraction near 110th Road and U.S. Highway 75, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 A Jackson County K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics in the car. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of cocaine, an additional controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. 

The front seat passenger, Semaja L. Willform, 20, of Merriam, had an outstanding felony warrant from Johnson County for burglary. Willform was arrested and transported to the Jackson County Jail and was booked on requested charges of possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and trafficking contraband into a correctional facility, according to Morse.

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a series of license plate and vehicle thefts in Salina have made an arrest.

On Thursday, police arrested Anthony Bernal, 39, of Salina, in connection to the stolen license plate case, two stolen vehicle cases, and a case in which a loaf of bread and a package of Oscar Meyer hotdogs were stolen from a south Salina store, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

On Tuesday afternoon, a&nbsp;reported Hispanic man driving a black Dodge Caravan pulled into a parking stall next to a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan in the parking lot of Dollar Tree, 1201 W. Crawford Street. The man was seen walking to the back of the Grand Caravan and removing the license plate. He then got back into the Caravan and drove to nearby Club Carwash.

The man then came back to the Grand Caravan with a different license plate, which he handed to the owner of the Grand Caravan and asked whether it was hers. When she confronted him about stealing her license plate, he fled.

This incident was captured on surveillance video from Club Carwash, according to Forrester.

On Wednesday, police respond to a report of suspicious activity in the 100 block of S. 12th Street. During that encounter, an officer took from one of the people involved a Dodge vehicle key. The key would later help police develop a suspect.

Just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to the report of people snooping in the 100 block of S. Baker Street. When police arrived, they found a charcoal gray Dodge Caravan parked in a nearby alley with its hazard lights on, the hood propped open, and the driver's door open. The tag on the vehicle was the one reported stolen from a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Tuesday afternoon.

Police also discovered that the Caravan had been reported stolen out of Garden City. When officers searched the Caravan, they found narcotics and drug paraphernalia, according to Forrester.

During the investigation into this incident, police made contact with Bernal. Also on Thursday, an officer took the Dodge vehicle key from the Wednesday incident to the impound lot where the Caravan was kept and discovered that the key belonged to that particular minivan.

At approximately 3 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the 1000 block of Park Street. A 62-year-old Salina man told police that he had loaned his 2008 Pontiac G6, valued at $2,000, to another person.

While that person and Bernal were at the residence on Park Street, Bernal left in the vehicle without permission, Forrester said.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, Bernal was found asleep in the G6 in the parking lot of Walmart, 2900 S. Ninth Street. While officers were talking with Bernal, Walmart personnel approached and told police that Bernal had allegedly stolen a loaf of Sara Lee bread and a package of Oscar Meyer hotdogs, which were valued at $5, Forrester said.

Bernal also allegedly was found to be in possession of 10 Klonopin pills for which he had no prescription or tax stamp.

Bernal is being held on requested charges of Felony theft,&nbsp;Felony possession of stolen property, Possession of a stimulant, No tax stamp, Two counts of misdemeanor theft, Two counts of driving while suspended and Two counts of misdemeanor possession of stolen property.

Bernal has previous convictions for theft, aggravated battery, DUI and drugs in Finney and Lyon County, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections&nbsp;

Police arrest Kansas felon for license plate, vehicle thefts

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating&nbsp; a fatal shooting that left 21-year-old Devin Bills of Wichita deceased have arrested&nbsp;19-year-old Laquavion Bentley.

Just after 1:30 a.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to a shooting in the 4500 block of South Hydraulic. Upon arrival, Officers located Bills unconscious and not breathing with two gunshot wounds to his upper body, according to Officer Juan&nbsp;Rebolledo.

Officers began life-saving measures. EMS pronounced Bills deceased on the scene.

The investigation revealed that Bills and several other people were outside the residence hanging out when a verbal argument ensued, and shots were fired. The suspect later identified as Bentley fled the scene in a vehicle. 

He is being<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20075063"> held on $600,000 bonds</a> on requested charges of 2nd degree intentional murder, failure to comply and criminal possession of a firearm, according to online jail records.

Kan. teen accused of murder after shooting while 'hanging out' 

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A former Kansas City, Kansas, police detective who has long been accused of sexually preying on Black women during criminal investigations was indicted Thursday on charges that he sexually abused two women, the FBI said.

Roger Golubski, 69, was arrested at his home in Edwardsville after a federal grand jury indicted him on six counts of civil rights violations. He was expected to make his first court appearance Thursday afternoon.

Golubski retired in 2010 after working for the Kansas City (Kansas) Police Department for 35 years. The FBI&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/police-kansas-city-kansas-4d005737c9046b7d65363a6e82f93493">has been investigating allegations</a>&nbsp;that Golubski, who is white, sexually assaulted Black women in the city and exchanged drugs for information during criminal investigations.

The federal indictment announced Thursday accuses Golubski of sexually assaulting two women, identified as S.K., and O.W., on several occasions between 1998 and 2002.

He is accused of raping both women and forcing them to perform oral sex on him several times in his vehicle and at the women's homes. Golubski’s conduct included aggravated sexual abuse and kidnapping, according to the indictment.

If convicted of any of the counts, Golubski could be sentenced to life in prison.

Golubski's attorney, Morgan Roach, didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Civil rights groups for years sought an investigation into Golubski's conduct. The allegations against him drew more attention after Lamont McIntyre, who spent 23 years in prison for a double murder he didn't commit,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lawsuits-kansas-city-kansas-7b4c4af7410f67d20fd19cb2e9235aad">sued Golubski</a>&nbsp;and other Kansas City, Kansas, officers after he was released.

McIntyre and his mother, Rose McIntyre, alleged in the lawsuit that Golubski framed Lamont for a double homicide in 1994 because she refused the detective's sexual demands. The local government agreed in June to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lawsuits-kansas-city-96f163ee13c721c0ab53899dcad05897">settle the lawsuit</a>&nbsp;for $12.5 million.

When deposed by McIntyre’s lawyers in the case, Golubski invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination hundreds of times. He has consistently declined media requests to comment on the allegations.

In 2020, a coalition of Kansas lawmakers, religious leaders and racial justice advocates&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/religion-us-news-police-crime-abuse-of-women-4029e8e0d18a3af50c5b219afe7a0f41">asked the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to investigate</a>&nbsp;Golubski and other members of the department who were accused of misconduct and abuse.

And in 2021, an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-music-arts-and-entertainment-crime-police-54f4c7a47df11cd937aacdb180b4b25e">organization run by rapper Jay-Z filed</a>&nbsp;a petition seeking records from the police department related to what it called a history of officer misconduct within the department.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—The search in Wabaunsee County for a suspect in an attempted kidnapping in Russell County has shifted to Missouri.

Through an investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's office the location of the suspect in this case has been confirmed to be in Missouri, according to Sheriff Rob Hoskins.

Wabaunsee County authorities have forwarded their investigative leads to Russell County and Missouri authorities so they may continue their investigation and arrest the suspect.

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have made an arrest.

Just after noon on Sept. 5, police investigated a burglary of a vehicle that was parked in the 500 block Unity in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.&nbsp;

An investigation led to the arrest on Tuesday of 28-year-old Kattibrie D. Lynch of Atchison on a District Court warrant for burglary of a vehicle and theft. She is being held without bond, according to online jail records.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man accused in a violent sexual assault made his first court appearance on Monday. Darryl Ford, 61,&nbsp;is charged with two counts of rape, two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated burglary, kidnapping, attempted rape, and battery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. All charges are felonies except the battery.

Just after 7:30 a.m. Sept. 7, police were dispatched to a Wichita hospital for a Sexual Assault report. A 58-year-old victim reported being sexually assaulted by Ford at a home in the 900 block of West Maple in Wichita, according to Officer Chad Ditch.

All are felonies except the last one. Attorneys are scheduled to discuss the case on Sept. 26. He remains jailed on a $500,000 bond.

Kansas man charged in violent sexual assault of 58-year-old

MANHATTAN–&nbsp; Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fight in Aggieville on August 28. With assistance from Fort Riley’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID), authorities have identified a suspect and made an arrest, according to the Riley County Police Department.

On Wednesday, police arrested 25-year-old Jordan Owens of Fort Riley&nbsp; for aggravated battery after he reportedly punched a 23-year-old man causing severe head injuries. 

The victim was found in the alley behind Tate’s bar in the 1100 block of Moro St. by a group of individuals who brought him to the emergency room at Via Christi.

 The victim was later transported to KU Medical Center in Kansas City for further treatment, no current medical status is available.

Owens remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $50,000.

Suspect arrested for fight in Aggieville that critically injured man

A Colorado man and a woman were arrested Monday afternoon after leading a trooper on a chase from Hays to Russell with speeds that reached 130 miles per hour.

At 3:36 p.m. Monday, a trooper tried to stop a 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by 31-year-old Anthony B. Casados of Parker, Colo., at mile marker 158 on Interstate 70 at Hays, said Trooper Tod Hileman of the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The motorcycle fled eastbound on I-70 and exited the interstate at Russell at the U.S. 281 junction. The motorcycle ran out of gas about a mile south of Russell.

The driver dropped the motorcycle and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended a short time later, Hileman said.

Casados and his passenger, 42-year-old Megan C. Horstmann of Denver, were arrested on a requested charge of fleeing and alluding. Casados was also arrested on a requested charge of driving with a revoked driver's license.

Both suspects were booked into the Ellis County Jail. No one was injured in the pursuit.

Trooper arrests 2 after 130mph chase on I-70

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects who have been running from the law since 2019.

On Tuesday, police learned two fugitives from justice were in the city of Topeka, according to Lt. Manuel Munoz. Information was that the two would be in a maroon Chevy truck with South Dakota Plates.

At approximately noon, officers began to track the movements of the truck utilizing the LPRs (Licenses Plate Readers) and determined the direction of travel on SW 21st from SW Washburn. Information was relayed to officers and the vehicle was spotted by an officer in the Motor Cycle Unit still traveling west on SW 21st.

The driver of the truck attempted to elude officers, but was stopped behind a local church on the corner of SW 21st and SW Sims.

Police took Todd Joseph Sweet, 49, and Laura Penelope Wilson Sweet, 45, both of Tennessee into custody and transported&nbsp; \them to Shawnee County Department of Corrections on Fugitive from Justice Warrants out of the Eastern District of Tennessee. Both had warrants for Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution and had been on the run since 2019.

Two juveniles were also found in the vehicle with them and were placed in police protective custody.

2 fugitives from justice since 2019 captured in Kansas

MCPHERSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities and USD 400 Smoky Valley Public Schools continue investigating an alleged school threat that took place Monday and one student is in custody, according to a media release from police.

Smoky Valley school officials were made aware of information about a potential threat made through social media towards Smoky Valley High School, 1 Viking Boulevard in Lindsborg.

Police were notified of the potential threat and immediately started an investigation into this incident. Through a collaborative effort between USD 400 officials, the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office and the Lindsborg Police Department that went late into the morning hours, a juvenile subject was identified and taken into custody without incident.

While the immediate incident has been resolved, the investigation remains active and ongoing. The Lindsborg Police Department takes these incidents seriously and will investigate them accordingly.

Police make arrest for alleged threat at Kan. high school

WASHINGTON (AP) — Upending the political debate, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham introduced a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/abortion">nationwide abortion ban</a>&nbsp;Tuesday, sending shockwaves through both parties and igniting fresh debate on a fraught issue weeks before the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/2022-midterm-elections">midterm elections</a>&nbsp;that will determine control of Congress.

Graham's own Republican Party leaders did not immediately embrace his abortion ban bill, which would prohibit the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy with rare exceptions, and has almost no chance of becoming law in the Democratic-held Congress. Democrats torched it as an alarming signal of where “MAGA” Republicans are headed if they win control of the House and Senate in November.

"America’s got to make some decisions," Graham said at a news conference at the Capitol.

The South Carolina Republican said that rather than shying away from the Supreme Court's ruling this summer overturning Roe vs. Wade's nearly 50-year right to abortion access, Republicans are preparing to fight to make a nationwide abortion ban federal law.

“Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, we’re going nowhere,” the senator said while flanked by female advocates from the anti-abortion movement. “We welcome the debate. We welcome the vote in the United States Senate as to what America should look like in 2022.”

Reaction was swift, fierce and unwavering from Democrats who viewed Graham's legislation as an extreme example of the far-right's hold on the GOP, and as a political gift of self-inflicted pain for Republican candidates now having to answer questions about an abortion ban heading toward the midterm elections.

“A nationwide abortion ban — that’s the contrast between the two parties, plain and simple,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said.

Sen.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-abortion-congress-government-and-politics-3470f5158353cf2797f8fac4d9330eaf">Patty Murray</a>, a Democrat from Washington who is in her own fight for reelection, said Republicans “want to force” women to stay pregnant and deliver babies.

“To anyone who thought they were safe, here is the painful reality,” she said. “Republicans are coming for your rights.”

The sudden turn of events comes in a razor-tight election season as Republicans hoping to win control of Congress are struggling to recapture momentum, particularly after the Supreme Court's landmark decision sparked deep concerns among some voters, with signs of female voters peeling away from the GOP.

In a midterm election where the party out of the White House traditionally holds an advantage, even more so this year with President Joe Biden's lackluster approval ratings, the Democrats have regained their own momentum pushing back the GOP candidates in House and Senate races.

Tuesday's announcement set up an immediate split screen with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/joe-biden">Biden</a>&nbsp;and Democrats poised&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-economy-prices-government-and-politics-89706a04bc727d3e58ab6bb4b2efa995">to celebrate their accomplishments</a>&nbsp;in a ceremony at the White House after passage of the Inflation Reduction Act and Republicans forced to answer for Graham's proposed abortion ban.

"This bill is wildly out of step with what Americans believe," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

"While President Biden and Vice President Harris are focused on the historic passage of the Inflation Reduction Act to reduce the cost of prescription drugs, health care, and energy – and to take unprecedented action to address climate change — Republicans in Congress are focused on taking rights away from millions of women," Jean-Pierre said.

Graham's legislation has almost zero chance of becoming law, but it elevates the abortion issue at a time when other Republicans would prefer to focus on inflation, border security and Biden's leadership.

The Republican bill would ban abortions nationwide after 15 weeks of pregnancy, except in cases of rape, incest or risk to the physical health of the mother. Graham said it would put the U.S. on par with many countries in Europe and around the world.

In particular, Graham's bill would leave in place state laws that are more restrictive. That provision is notable because many Republicans have argued that the Supreme Court's ruling leaves the abortion issue for the states to decide. But the legislation from the Republicans makes it clear states are only allowed to decide the issue if their abortion bans are more stringent.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who is one seat away from majority control, declined to embrace Graham's legislation.

“I think every Republican senator running this year in these contested races has an answer as to how they feel about the issue," McConnell said. He said most GOP senators prefer having the issue dealt with by the states, rather than at the federal level. "So I leave it up to our candidates who are quite capable of handling this issue to determine for them what their response is.”

The Democratic senators most at risk this fall and other Democratic candidates running for Congress appeared eager to fight against Graham's proposed nationwide abortion ban.

Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, a Nevada Democrat, tweeted that Graham “and every other anti-choice extremist can take a hike.”

Her Republican opponent, Adam Laxalt, has during his campaign insisted that abortion is protected in the state constitution, which it may no longer be under this bill.

In Colorado, another Democrat up for reelection, Sen. Michael Bennet, tweeted: “A nationwide abortion ban is outrageous. "

Bennet pledged "to defend a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, no matter what ZIP code she lives in. We cannot afford to let the Republicans take back the Senate.”

His opponent in Colorado, Republican Joe O’Dea, who supports putting abortion access that had been guaranteed under Roe vs. Wade into law, agreed, in part: “A Republican ban is as reckless and tone deaf as is Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer’s hostility to considering any compromise on late term abortion, parental notification or conscience protections for religious hospitals.”

The races for control of Congress are tight in the split 50-50 Senate, where one seat determines majority control, and in the House, where Speaker Nancy Pelosi can afford to lose only a few seats.

Pelosi called Graham's bill the “clearest signal of extreme MAGA Republicans’ intent to criminalize women’s health freedom in all 50 states and arrest doctors for providing basic care. Make no mistake: if Republicans get the chance, they will work to pass laws even more draconian than this bill.”

Republican leaders on Capitol Hill tried to hold the party together amid the differences.

“I think that what it’s attempting to do is probably change the conversation a little bit,” said Sen. John Thune, a South Dakota Republican and second-ranking party leader.

“Democrats are implying that all Republicans are for a ban without exceptions, and that’s not true,” Thune said. “There are Republicans who are in favor of restrictions. And I think this is an attempt to at least put something out there that reflects the views of a lot of Republicans who are in favor of some restrictions.”

GOP Senator unveils nationwide abortion ban legislation

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect wanted for alleged child sex and immigration crimes after a traffic stop.

Just after 1a.m. Sunday, a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 1998 Honda Civic in the 1400 block of SW Topeka Boulevard that was failing to maintain its lane of traffic, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

During the investigation, it was determined that the driver was too impaired to operate a motor vehicle. After providing multiple false identities, Deputies arrested 41-year-old&nbsp;&nbsp;Hugo Enrique Lopez-Vela of Topeka.

He is being held on requested charges of driving under the influence, felony interference with law enforcement, aggravated false impersonation, transporting an open container of liquor, driving with a suspended driver’s license and improper driving on a laned roadway.

Investigators also discovered that Lopez-Vela&nbsp; had a felony warrant for aggravated indecent liberties with a child and an immigration felony deportation violation.

Police catch Kansas burglary suspects running from crime

PAWNEE COUNTY—A Kansas man was sentenced Sept. 8 for a violent attack on his mother.

Cory S. Johnson, 38 of Larned, had originally been bound over following a Preliminary Hearing on June 21, on two counts of Aggravated Domestic Battery with alternative charges of Criminal Restraint, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.

Immediately prior to the Jury Trial, however, the parties agreed to amend the Information/Complaint to be one count of misdemeanor Domestic Battery and one count of Criminal Restraint, according to&nbsp; McNett.

The jury heard testimony that on the afternoon of May 25, 2021, the Johnson's mother contacted the Larned Police Department requesting assistance with her son. 

She indicated that he was off his medications and his mental health had been deteriorating for nearly a year. The mother testified that on the previous day he had held her down in their backyard and rubbed creek water on her trying to “get the devil out of her.” 

She further indicated that sometime after 1:00 a.m. her son again held her down for nearly an hour in the kitchen of the home they shared and made statements about the devil. She advised law enforcement she was afraid of her son, and she wanted him to get him help.

Law enforcement testified they found Johnson later that afternoon in the middle of the Pawnee Creek drinking creek water and filling up containers with creek water. He was arrested without incident.

The jury made up of 2 women and 4 men deliberated for over an hour before returning a Guilty verdict on the Criminal Restraint charge. The Jury Foreman advised the Court, however, they were hopeless deadlocked as to the Domestic Battery charge and no amount of additional deliberation would change the deadlock. Accordingly, the Court declared a mistrial as to the Domestic Battery charge.

Following discharge of the jury, the State advised that it would not seek retrial on the Domestic Battery charge. The parties then requested the Court proceed to immediate sentencing. Pawnee County Judge Bruce Gatterman sentenced Johnson to the maximum sentence allowed by law of 12 months in the County Jail with credit for time served. He had been in custody since his arrest on May 25, 2021. All costs and fees were waived due to indigency.

(AP) — Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid pleaded guilty Monday to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-kansas-football-kansas-city-kansas-city-chiefs-d43b085c56ac1d0ec8445f30faa6a4d0">felony driving while intoxicated</a>&nbsp;resulting in serious physical injury stemming from a 2021 crash, which occurred when his pickup truck struck two stopped cars on an interstate entrance ramp and seriously injured a 5-year-old girl.

Reid, the 37-year-old son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, had been scheduled to go to trial on Sept. 26. He had faced up to seven years in prison, but the plea deal means he now faces a possible sentence ranging from probation to four years in prison. He entered his plea in Jackson County Circuit Court in Kansas City. Sentencing is set for Oct. 28.

Investigators said Britt Reid was intoxicated and driving about 84 mph&nbsp; when his Dodge truck hit the cars on an entrance ramp to Interstate 435 near Arrowhead Stadium on Feb. 4, 2021.

A girl inside one of the cars, Ariel Young, suffered a traumatic brain injury. Six people, including Reid, were injured in the crash.

In court, Reid acknowledged he was drinking on the night of the crash.

“I really regret what I did,” Reid said. “I made a huge mistake. I apologize to the family. I didn't mean to hurt anyone.”

Tom Pardo, an attorney representing Ariel's family, said they opposed the plea deal.

“The five victims of this crime are outraged,” Pardo said. “The prosecuting attorney is not seeking maximum sentence allowable by law. The defendant is a prior offender whose actions caused a 5-year-old girl to be in a coma and seriously injured three others.”

A Kansas City police officer who arrived at the scene of the crash reported he could smell alcohol and that Reid’s eyes were bloodshot, according to court documents. Reid had a blood-alcohol level of 0.113 two hours after the crash, police said. The legal limit is 0.08.

One of the vehicles he hit had stalled because of a dead battery and the second was owned by Ariel’s mother, who had arrived to help.

The Chiefs reached a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-sports-health-business-football-b79b53869eb2a017e1e41623ac5abb58">confidential agreement</a>&nbsp;with Ariel's family in November to pay for her ongoing medical treatment and other expenses.

Reid underwent emergency surgery for a groin injury after the crash. The Chiefs placed Reid on administrative leave and his job with the team ended after his contract was allowed to expire.

This is not the first legal issue for Reid, who graduated from a drug treatment program in Pennsylvania in 2009 after a series of run-ins with law enforcement. His father was coach of the Philadelphia Eagles at the time.
