RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a road rage incident in Manhattan.

Just after noon Tuesday, officers filed a report of aggravated assault near the intersection of 68th Avenue and Deer Trail Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 A 61-year-old man reported that a 59-year-old woman armed herself with a handgun and discharged it during a road rage incident. No persons were injured during the event. 

Just before 2p.m. Tuesday, police arrested 59-year-old Tracey Meredith of Manhattan in the 2700 block of Brookhollow Court on requested charges aggravated assault. Meredith met the requirement of $5000 bond and is no longer in custody.

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement across the Kansas City metro conducted a violent crimes initiative over the past week. Officers from the KCPD Special Investigations Division worked with the FBI, ATF, DEA, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and Missouri Probation and Parole.

Officers arrested 96 people&nbsp; across federal, state, and city charges/warrants, according to a statement from the Kansas City Police Department. This included four homicide suspects.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An F/A-18 fighter jet landing on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in the Red Sea went overboard, forcing its two pilots to eject, a defense official told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The incident Tuesday marks the latest mishap to mar the deployment of the Truman, which has been essential in the airstrike campaign by the United States against&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/houthis">Yemen’s Houthi rebels</a>.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump and Oman’s foreign minister both said a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-houthis-end-of-bombing-yemen-israel-e2f08ac04024ef3d6409b4ce97092489">ceasefire had been reached with the Houthis</a>, who would no longer target ships in the Red Sea corridor — something not immediately acknowledged by the rebels.

Meanwhile, the Houthis continue to assess the damage after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-yemen-houthis-airport-23c27ae5ef0b8c9c8860dbb79abee5ad">daytime Israeli airstrikes targeted Yemen’s rebel-held capital of Sanaa</a>.

The F/A-18 Super Hornet landed on the Truman after a flight, but “the arrestment failed,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren’t authorized to speak publicly about the incident now under investigation.

“Arrestment” refers to the hook system used by aircraft landing on carriers, which catches steel wire ropes on the flight deck. It remains unclear what part of the system failed.

The two pilots on board were later rescued by a helicopter and suffered minor injuries in the incident, the official added. No one on the flight deck was hurt.

Tuesday’s incident was the latest to see the Navy lose an F/A-18, which cost about $60 million. In April, another F/A-18 fighter jet slipped off the hangar deck of the Truman and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/aircraft-carrier-fighter-jet-truman-cfeaecc314bfcaf85ce5c30038306ac3">fell into the Red Sea</a>. The crew members who were in the pilot seat of the Super Hornet and on the small towing tractor both jumped away.

In December,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mideast-wars-yemen-us-navy-pilots-houthi-95a792daae3b0120186bfc6c66e1b6fe">the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg mistakenly shot down an F/A-18</a>&nbsp;after ships earlier shot down multiple Houthi drones and an anti-ship cruise missile launched by the rebels. Both aviators in that incident also survived.

And in February,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/truman-aircraft-carrier-collision-merchant-vessel-50e039f339c4658d246a08ca496a21d9">the Truman collided with a merchant vessel near Port Said,</a>&nbsp;Egypt.

The Truman, based out of Norfolk, Virginia, has seen its deployment extended multiple times amid the Houthi airstrike campaign. It had been joined recently by the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier operating out of the Arabian Sea.

The Houthis had been waging&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/yemen-houthi-israel-hamas-red-sea-shipping-ab6fee82e73170b7e2edbab90ed6c14c">persistent missile and drone attacks</a>&nbsp;against commercial and military ships in the region in what the group’s leadership has described as an effort to end Israel’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

From November 2023 until January 2025, the Houthis targeted more than 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones, sinking two of them and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/houthi-rebels-ship-attack-red-sea-yemen-bfa7d321e55c5bb59b268b82ef3c56ba">killing four sailors</a>. That has greatly reduced the flow of trade through the Red Sea corridor, which typically sees $1 trillion of goods move through it annually.

The Houthis paused attacks in a self-imposed ceasefire until the U.S. launched a broad assault against the rebels in mid-March.

U.S. fighter jet landing on aircraft carrier goes overboard, forcing pilots to eject

WICHITA —Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputies located and arrested 37-year-old Thomas Torrez on Tuesday evening.&nbsp; Torrez, a violent offender, was wanted for a serious of dangerous events that began early Sunday. The sheriff's office released few details about the arrest.

Just after 1a.m. Sunday, Wichita Police officers were recovering a stolen vehicle in the 4800 block of E. 21st Street North. During the recovery, Torrez—an occupant of the vehicle—fled the scene in the stolen car. He was not located during the initial incident.

Just before 8p.m., a Sedgwick County deputy spotted the same stolen vehicle using a Flock license plate reader at a McDonald’s drive-thru in the 4800 block of S. Broadway. Torrez was behind the wheel with a female passenger.

The deputy positioned his patrol vehicle to block the stolen car, but Torrez accelerated, ramming the patrol unit. He then reversed into the building, drove over a curb and landscaping, and fled onto 47th Street. The deputy’s vehicle was disabled from the impact, and he was unable to pursue. The deputy sustained minor injuries as a result.

The deputy was “put out in trouble,” and charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer were broadcast to responding units.

While responding with lights and sirens, a second deputy collided with a civilian vehicle at the intersection of 47th Street and Hydraulic. The civilian vehicle was carrying five people—a 37-year-old man, a 29-year-old woman, and three children ages 6, 8, and 10. All suffered minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital. No officers were actively pursuing the stolen vehicle at the time of the crash. This deputy sustained minor injuries that did not require medical attention.

Shortly after fleeing McDonald’s, the female passenger escaped the vehicle near Laura Street, north of 47th. She was located by officers and cooperated with the investigation. According to her statement, she tried to surrender during the initial stop and attempted multiple times to exit the vehicle, even using mace on Torrez.

Torrez later abandoned the stolen vehicle near 44th and Pattie and fled on foot. He then stole a second vehicle from a mobile home park in the 1000 block of E. MacArthur and led deputies on a brief pursuit, driving off-road in the area of O.J. Watson Park.

During his escape, Torrez caused a hit-and-run crash near Harry and McLean. The victim followed him to the area of Water and Zimmerly, where Torrez ditched the second vehicle and fled on foot.

Torrez is required to register with the Sheriff’s Office under the Offender Registration Act. He currently has two felony warrants for his arrest: one for failure to report as required and another for a probation violation. He will also face a host of new requested charges.

Edgar Sanchez-Solis, 23, unlawfully residing in Kansas City, Kansas; Ignacio Diaz-Perez, 35, unlawfully residing in Oakwood, Georgia; Samuel Diaz-Perez, 26, unlawfully residing in Dublin, Ohio; and Salvador Diaz-Diaz, 32, unlawfully residing in Columbus, Ohio, were charged by indictment with conspiracy to bring aliens to the United States and 25 counts of bringing aliens illegally to the United States for profit. The defendants were arrested at multiple locations throughout the United States and are currently detained. Ignacio Diaz-Perez and Salvador Diaz-Diaz had been previously removed from the United States.

According to court documents, the four defendants were part of an alien smuggling organization that has been operating for the last two years in Mexico, Canada, and the United States. The four defendants, in exchange for money, conspired with others to smuggle hundreds of aliens per week from Mexico, Central America, and South America through Canada, into northern New York, including Franklin and Clinton Counties, as alleged in court documents. The aliens or their family members paid thousands of dollars to be smuggled into the United States. The defendants and their co-conspirators allegedly facilitated the illegal travel of the aliens from Mexico to Canada and then across the northern border, where they were picked up and driven farther into the United States.

On multiple occasions members of the alien smuggling organization led local and federal law enforcement officers on high-speed vehicle chases along the U.S. northern border, creating a grave public safety risk, according to court documents. For example, in April 2023, smugglers allegedly fled the Burke Border Patrol Station’s sector at a high rate of speed after setting off a border sensor. Border Patrol successfully stopped the vehicle and apprehended the smugglers, who were transporting seven adult aliens and three minors. In another incident, in May 2023, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office used a tire deflation device to stop a van carrying aliens after it allegedly failed to yield to both federal and state law enforcement. The smugglers and aliens allegedly fled on foot after the vehicle was disabled. As additionally alleged, in August 2023, a vehicle carrying aliens that was fleeing from Border Patrol drove into Plattsburgh, New York, where it drove erratically, passed vehicles in a congested traffic area, ran a red light, and struck a motorist at an intersection. The driver and six illegal aliens fled the accident scene on foot but eventually were apprehended.

“These individuals acted in blatant disregard of our nation’s laws, allegedly smuggling hundreds of aliens into the United States for thousands of dollars each,” said Special Agent in Charge Erin Keegan of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Buffalo. “They’re alleged to have repeatedly put the public at risk through dangerous vehicle chases with law enforcement further demonstrating their contempt for the law and safety of others. Illegal alien in Kansas accused of human smuggling 

SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan.&nbsp;—A Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Detention Deputy is under investigation.

On Sunday, the Derby Police Department arrested 21-year-old Jordan Rubio&nbsp; on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to a statement from the Sheriff's Department.

Rubio has been employed with the Sheriff’s Office since February 2024. He is currently the subject of both a criminal investigation by Derby Police Department and an internal administrative investigation related to the arrest.

He met the requirements to bond out of jail at 5a.m. Sunday, according to online jail records.

Kansas sheriff's detention deputy accused of DUI

TOPEKA— A western Kansas man arrested in connection with a deadly shooting in Russell on April 24, is facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, according to the the Kansas Attorney General’s Office.

The Russell Police Department responded after a citizen called 911 to report a shooting.in the 800 block of East Second Street in Russell, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

At the scene, first responders found 49-year-old Deborah Torres of Russell with apparent gunshot wounds. Her husband, 49-year-old Robert Torres of Russell, was inside their home and was deceased from gunshot wounds.

Robert James, “Bobby” Torres, 33, is being held Russell County on a $1 million bond.&nbsp;

Fantasy Graphics Tattoo Studio of Hays&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1FZ2D3F5xY/">announced</a>&nbsp;on Facebook April 25, the death of tattoo artist Robert Torres. The post also said his wife, Debbie, has been hospitalized.

Robert and Debbie’s niece, Crystal Damm, created a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/memorial-and-medical-fund-for-robert-torres">GoFundMe</a>&nbsp;stating Debbie is expected to make a full recovery. As of May 5, the fundraiser had raised more than $10,700 to help cover funeral and medical expenses.

The GoFundMe said, "Robert touched so many lives. He was the light in every room he entered and always made sure to make everybody laugh. He dedicated his life to supporting his family in every way possible."

Man charged for fatal shooting in western Kansas

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;—&nbsp;The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating 37-year-old Thomas Torrez, a known violent offender, after a series of dangerous events that began early Sunday morning and continued into the evening, according to a media release from the sheriff's department.

Torrez is required to register with the Sheriff’s Office under the Offender Registration Act. He currently has two felony warrants for his arrest: one for failure to report as required and another for a probation violation.

 </figure>Just after 1a.m. Sunday, Wichita Police officers were recovering a stolen vehicle in the 4800 block of E. 21st Street North. During the recovery, Torrez—an occupant of the vehicle—fled the scene in the stolen car. He was not located during the initial incident.Just before 8p.m., a Sedgwick County deputy spotted the same stolen vehicle using a Flock license plate reader at a McDonald’s drive-thru in the 4800 block of S. Broadway. Torrez was behind the wheel with a female passenger.The deputy positioned his patrol vehicle to block the stolen car, but Torrez accelerated, ramming the patrol unit. He then reversed into the building, drove over a curb and landscaping, and fled onto 47th Street. The deputy’s vehicle was disabled from the impact, and he was unable to pursue. The deputy sustained minor injuries as a result.The deputy was “put out in trouble,” and charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer were broadcast to responding units.While responding with lights and sirens, a second deputy collided with a civilian vehicle at the intersection of 47th Street and Hydraulic. The civilian vehicle was carrying five people—a 37-year-old man, a 29-year-old woman, and three children ages 6, 8, and 10. All suffered minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital. No officers were actively pursuing the stolen vehicle at the time of the crash. This deputy sustained minor injuries that did not require medical attention.Shortly after fleeing McDonald’s, the female passenger escaped the vehicle near Laura Street, north of 47th. She was located by officers and cooperated with the investigation. According to her statement, she tried to surrender during the initial stop and attempted multiple times to exit the vehicle, even using mace on Torrez.Torrez later abandoned the stolen vehicle near 44th and Pattie and fled on foot. He then stole a second vehicle from a mobile home park in the 1000 block of E. MacArthur and led deputies on a brief pursuit, driving off-road in the area of O.J. Watson Park.During his escape, Torrez caused a hit-and-run crash near Harry and McLean. The victim followed him to the area of Water and Zimmerly, where Torrez ditched the second vehicle and fled on foot.Torrez is required to register with the Sheriff’s Office under the Offender Registration Act. Kan. violent offender who rammed deputy's patrol car is still missing

NEW ORLEANS (AP) —Louisiana authorities on Monday charged a second suspect with murder in the death of a television reporter who had traveled to New Orleans to cover the Super Bowl.

Adan Manzano, a 27-year-old reporter and anchor for Telemundo based in Kansas City, Missouri, was found dead Feb. 5 in his hotel room in the New Orleans suburb of Kenner. A woman seen on security video leaving Manzano's room was later charged with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-reporter-death-woman-charged-19030dc5638ec7e190764ebc15faf32f">second-degree murder</a>&nbsp;and with stealing his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-telemundo-reporter-death-adan-manzano-590192fafbbc6401682e813402801e94">credit cards and cellphone.</a>

Kenner police announced Monday that an accomplice, 34-year-old Rickey White, has also been charged with second-degree murder. White was arrested in Florida in March on robbery and fraud charges related to Manzano's death, then extradited to Louisiana.

Kenner police said in a news release that the murder charge against White resulted from “continued investigative efforts,” but officials gave no further details.

Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley said at a news conference March 18 that investigators had linked White to Danette Colbert, the first suspect charged in the case, based on “correspondence and information where they were going back and forth. So we think they were working hand-in-hand in concert with each other.”

An attorney for White, Kevin Boshea, said he hadn't been informed of the murder charge before an Associated Press reporter called him Monday.

“I don’t think he’s guilty of the other crimes,” Boshea said, “so how can he be guilty of murder?”

Boshea said he pressed police during a preliminary hearing on the robbery and fraud charges last month to show evidence that White was in the New Orleans area when Manzano died, but they presented none.

An attorney for Colbert had said that police were making “assumptions and guesses” to link her to Manzano’s death.

Under Louisiana law, a defendant can be charged with second-degree murder for distributing drugs that cause a death or for committing certain crimes, including robbery, that result in someone dying.

An autopsy found Manzano died lying facedown on a pillow and unable to breathe after ingesting a combination of alcohol&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-reporter-death-drug-telemundo-2e63ce04cbe526ae6856559b20c92913">and the depressant Xanax,</a>&nbsp;Jefferson Parish Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich told reporters in March.

Police said security video from Manzano's hotel showed him and Colbert entering his room together the day of his death. Footage showed Colbert leaving without him about an hour later. Authorities have said Colbert later used Manzano’s credit card to make a purchase at a New Orleans gas station and at several stores in the area.

Police have also said Manzano’s medical records showed no prescriptions for Xanax or other depressants, and that they recovered the drug from Colbert’s home.

SEDGWICK —A Kansas felon on parole who admitted to a fatal stabbing in 2020 is going back to prison.

On Friday, Judge Sean Hatfield sentenced Kenneth Junius, Jr. to 247 months in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In March he pleaded guilty to the killing&nbsp; 59-year-old Bryan Turner.

In November of 2020, police responded to a stabbing at a home in the 2800 block of South Washington in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp;

Upon arrival, officer’s located Bryan Turner with multiple cut and stab wounds to his body.&nbsp; Officers quickly began life-saving measures, but he died of his injuries on the scene.

The investigation revealed that multiple people were at the home, and Turner and a suspect identified as Junious were both visiting. While at the home, a disturbance ensued between Junious and Turner.

During the disturbance, Junious pulled out a knife and caused multiple injuries to Turner. Junious then fled the scene in a vehicle.&nbsp; Police reported his arrest several days later.

Junious has numerous previous felony convictions that include aggravated battery, aggravated escape from custody, theft, criminal possession of a weapon, theft, flee and attempt to elude and and was on parole through Kansas Dept. of Corrections at the time of the stabbing.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pushing forward with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/immigration">its mass deportation agenda</a>, President Donald Trump's administration said Monday that it would pay $1,000 to immigrants who are in the United States illegally and return to their home country voluntarily.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a news release that it would also pay for travel assistance — and that people who use&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-immigrant-deportation-87badb16224730affadf95c67c551da7">an app called CBP Home</a>&nbsp;to tell the government they plan to return home will be “deprioritized” for detention and removal by immigration enforcement.

“If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest," Secretary Kristi Noem said. “DHS is now offering illegal aliens financial travel assistance and a stipend to return to their home country through the CBP Home App.”

The department said it had already paid for a plane ticket for one migrant to return home to Honduras from Chicago and said more tickets have been booked for this week and next.

It's a major part of Trump's administration

Trump made immigration enforcement and the mass deportation of immigrants in the United States illegally a centerpiece of his campaign, and he is following through during the first months of his administration. But it is a costly, resource-intensive endeavor.

While the Republican administration is asking Congress for a massive increase in resources for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement department responsible for removing people from the country, it’s also pushing people in the country illegally to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-self-deportation-trump-0a8d8371cf7e22a5809db40ebbecf42d">“self-deport.”</a>

It has coupled this self-deportation push with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dhs-immigration-award-republican-ad-campaign-e7939619195791493e828dfd20604d65">television ads threatening action</a>&nbsp;against people in the U.S. illegally and social media images showing immigration enforcement arrests and migrants being sent to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/el-salvador-us-rubio-prison-de912f6a8199aaa7c8490585dcaa3b87">a prison in El Salvador</a>.

The Trump administration has often portrayed self-deportation as a way for migrants to preserve their ability to return to the U.S. someday.

But Aaron Reichlen-Melnick, a senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, which advocates for immigrants, said there’s a lot for migrants to be cautious about in the latest offer from Homeland Security.

He said it’s often worse for people to leave the country and not fight their case in immigration court, especially if they’re already in removal proceedings. He said if migrants are in removal proceedings and don’t show up in court they can automatically get a deportation order and leaving the country usually counts as abandoning many applications for relief including asylum applications.

And Homeland Security is not indicating that it is closely coordinating with the immigration courts so that there are no repercussions for people in immigration court if they leave, he said.

“People’s immigration status is not as simple as this makes it out to be," Reichlen-Melnick said.

He questioned where Homeland Security would get the money and the authorization to make the payments — and he suggested they are necessary because the administration can't arrest and remove as many people as it has promised so it has to encourage people to do it on their own.

“They’re not getting their numbers," he said.

As part of its self-deportation effort, the Trump administration has transformed an app that had been used by the Biden administration to allow nearly 1 million migrants to schedule appointments to enter the country into&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-immigrant-deportation-87badb16224730affadf95c67c551da7">a tool to help migrants</a>&nbsp;return home. Under the Biden administration, it was called CBP One; now it's dubbed CBP Home.

Homeland Security said that, so far, “thousands” of migrants have used the app to self-deport.

WICHITA, Kan. —&nbsp;The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating 37-year-old Thomas Torrez, a known violent offender, after a series of dangerous events that began early Sunday morning and continued into the evening, according to a media release from the sheriff's department.

 </figure>Just after 1a.m. Sunday, Wichita Police officers were recovering a stolen vehicle in the 4800 block of E. 21st Street North. During the recovery, Torrez—an occupant of the vehicle—fled the scene in the stolen car. He was not located during the initial incident.Just before 8p.m., a Sedgwick County deputy spotted the same stolen vehicle using a Flock license plate reader at a McDonald’s drive-thru in the 4800 block of S. Broadway. Torrez was behind the wheel with a female passenger.The deputy positioned his patrol vehicle to block the stolen car, but Torrez accelerated, ramming the patrol unit. He then reversed into the building, drove over a curb and landscaping, and fled onto 47th Street. The deputy’s vehicle was disabled from the impact, and he was unable to pursue. The deputy sustained minor injuries as a result.The deputy was “put out in trouble,” and charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer were broadcast to responding units.While responding with lights and sirens, a second deputy collided with a civilian vehicle at the intersection of 47th Street and Hydraulic. The civilian vehicle was carrying five people—a 37-year-old man, a 29-year-old woman, and three children ages 6, 8, and 10. All suffered minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital. No officers were actively pursuing the stolen vehicle at the time of the crash. This deputy sustained minor injuries that did not require medical attention.Shortly after fleeing McDonald’s, the female passenger escaped the vehicle near Laura Street, north of 47th. She was located by officers and cooperated with the investigation. According to her statement, she tried to surrender during the initial stop and attempted multiple times to exit the vehicle, even using mace on Torrez.Torrez later abandoned the stolen vehicle near 44th and Pattie and fled on foot. He then stole a second vehicle from a mobile home park in the 1000 block of E. MacArthur and led deputies on a brief pursuit, driving off-road in the area of O.J. Watson Park.During his escape, Torrez caused a hit-and-run crash near Harry and McLean. The victim followed him to the area of Water and Zimmerly, where Torrez ditched the second vehicle and fled on foot.Torrez is required to register with the Sheriff’s Office under the Offender Registration Act. He currently has two felony warrants for his arrest: one for failure to report as required and another for a probation violation.Thomas Torrez is considered dangerous and should not be approached. Search underway for Kan. violent offender who rammed deputy's patrol car

FINNEY COUNTY— Law enforcement in southwest Kansas are investigating a suspect for allegedly&nbsp;assaulting a teenager and threatened others with a firearm.

Just before 11p.m. Friday, police responded to the Finney County Fairgrounds for an aggravated assault after learning a man was reportedly threatening multiple teenagers with a firearm, according to a media release.

 As they arrived, Officers observed a Ford Ranger fleeing the fairgrounds into the Arkansas River. Officers coordinated with Deputies the location of the vehicle, and it was stopped, where law enforcement met with two occupants as well as a group of teenagers in the fairgrounds parking lot to conduct their investigation. 

The investigation revealed that the passenger in the Ford Ranger, identified as Fabian Richters-Laurelez, 21, assaulted a teenager and made threats of shooting the group, leading them to flee into Peebles Complex and call 911. 

Officers arrested Richters-Laurelez and booked him into the Finney County Jail on requested charges of Criminal Threat, Endangering of a Child, Battery, and a municipal warrant.&nbsp; There were no injuries from the incident.

JOHNSON COUNTY — A suspect arrested in connection with the death of a Kansas woman in her home is set to face a judge Monday.

Just after 4:30p.m. Friday police booked 47-year-old Dartanan Hudgens into the Johnson County jail in connection with the death of 75-year-old Karen M. Peterson.

On Thursday, police reported they were conducting a homicide investigation in Olathe and identified the victim sa Peterson, according to Police Sergeant John Moncayo.

Just after 11a.m. Wednesday, officers were dispatched to the 400 block of North Persimmon Drive in Olathe to check on the welfare of Peterson according to&nbsp;Officer Sean Wilkes. At the home, first responders found her deceased inside the residence.&nbsp; Police have not released how she died.

Hudgens, who has no permanent address, according the arrest report, is being held on a $1 million dollar bond on requested charges of premeditated first-degree murder, according to online jail records.

Suspect accused of killing 75-year-old Kansas woman 

KANSAS CITY– A Kansas City&nbsp; man has been charged in a federal criminal complaint for child pornography offenses.

Jeffrey Lynn Petrie, 40,&nbsp; was charged in a two-count criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City, on April 25, according to the United State's Attorney.

The federal criminal complaint charges Petrie with one count of distributing child pornography over the internet in May 2024, and one count of possessing child pornography from Dec. 9, 2024, to April 24, 2025.

According to an affidavit filed in support of the criminal complaint, law enforcement officers received a Cybertip reporting that a user, “kinkypopper69,” was uploading video files depicting child sexual abuse materials. Petrie was later identified as the user “kinkypopper69.”

On Thursday, April 24, the FBI conducted a search at Petrie’s residence and seized a cell phone. Petrie is a registered sex offender in Missouri based on prior convictions for child molestation in the 2nd degree.

The charges contained in this complaint are simply accusations, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charges must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.

On May 1,&nbsp; members of the Topeka Police Department’s Investigations and Patrol Bureaus served a search warrant in the 1300 block of SW 16th Street, Topeka, according to Police&nbsp;Commander Aaron Jones.

The search revealed firearms, firearms accessories, Methamphetamine, Marijuana, drug paraphernalia and an explosive device.

As a result, Thomas Lathrom 34, of Topeka, was taken into custody and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of&nbsp;Criminal possession of a firearm by convicted felon, Distribution of methamphetamine within 1000 feet of school, Possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute, Criminal possession of explosives, Aggravated Endangerment of a child and Felony interference with a law enforcement officer.

Police found drugs, children and explosives at Kansas home

WICHITA, Kansas. –&nbsp;Royce Lee Timmons, a minimum-custody resident of the Wichita Work Release Facility (WWRF), has been apprehended.

Timmons was taken into custody Sunday morning, May 4, 2025, after surrendering himself at the facility. He was arrested without incident.

Timmons was convicted in Sedgwick County for 29 months of incarceration for criminal possession of firearms while on parole. He was on parole for March 2011 aggravated robbery convictions.

Timmons &nbsp;was placed on escape status after not returning to the facility Saturday, May 3, 2025.

WICHITA, Kansas. –&nbsp;Kansas Department of Corrections placed inmate Royce Lee Timmons on escape status at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, according to a statement from the KDOC.&nbsp; Timmons did not return to the Wichita Work Release Facility.

Timmons, 42, was reported missing when he could not be located at the minimum-security unit. This walkaway does not impact the security or operations of the medium-maximum secure compound.

Timmons is described as 5-feet-11, 224 pounds with an athletic build. He has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing black shorts, a grey hoodie shirt and blue hat.

Anyone with information on Timmons should call the Kansas Department of Corrections at 316-779-5814, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation at (800) 572-7463 or local law enforcement at 911.

The walk-away is being investigated. The KDOC released no additional details.

Escaped Kan. inmate turns himself in at work release facility

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating another deadly shooting in Topeka.

Just before 10:30p.m. May 2, police responded to the area of SW 13th and SW Boswell in Topeka on the report of gunshots in the area, according to Police Lt. Ronnie Connell.

 As officers arrived in the area, they located a man later identified as 27-year-old Treveon Carrington suffering from life-threatening injuries.&nbsp; While on scene, medical personnel pronounced him deceased.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested 30-year-old Derrick Mitchell of Topeka, was arrested and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on a requested charge of first degree murder. This is the city’s 6 th homicide investigation of 2025 in Topeka, according to Connell.

Still missing: Kansas inmate did not return to work release facility

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a encounter at a Kansas residence.

On May 1,&nbsp;members of the Topeka Police Department Narcotics Unit and the Shawnee County Drug Task Force, served a search warrant in 200 Block of SE Swygart Street in Topeka related to an ongoing investigation, according to Police&nbsp;LT Ronnie Connell.

While conducting the search warrant, officers located cocaine,&nbsp;marijuana,  firearms and drug paraphernalia. As part of the investigation, it was discovered there were signs of animal cruelty, cockfight occurring. Officers seized a total of 28 animals.

As a result, Israel Hernandez-Zavala, 40 years of age, was transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges Unlawful conduct of cockfighting, Unlawful possession of cockfighting paraphernalia, Cruelty to animals, Unlawful discharge of firearms in the city limits, Distribution of marijuana, Possession of drug paraphernalia, Distribute or possession with intent to distribute drug paraphernalia, Unlawful to acquire proceeds from drug transaction, Possession of cocaine, Kansas drug tax Arrest warrants (4)
