HARVEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old Hesston girl and have a juvenile suspect in custody.

Just before 10 p.m. Sunday, the suspect identified as a 16-year-old boy arrived at a house in the 900 block of South Walnut in Newton where a group of teens were hanging out, according to a media release from police.

Witnesses said the boy was visibly intoxicated and was waving around a gun. He pointed the gun at others in the room before fatally shooting the girl.

Witnesses and neighbors attempted to perform CPR and called 911, and the suspect ran from the house.&nbsp; Newton Police arrested the suspect just after 10 a.m. Monday at his house in Newton.&nbsp; Police have not released the name of the suspect or the victim.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A former University of Kansas football player says the university offered him more than $50,000 in benefits if he left the program and stayed quiet about harassment he experienced from four other players on the team.

Caperton Humphrey&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/sports/college/big-12/university-of-kansas/article252152528.html">told&nbsp;</a>the Kansas City Star that he received little help from school officials after he reported the threats and harassment from teammates.

Humphrey, who played at Kansas in 2017 and 2018 first as a walk-on and later on scholarship, said the feud he had with several teammates culminated in a confrontation between Humphrey and the other players in his apartment when the players threatened him, his father and his 15-year-old brother.

Humphrey said at some point in February 2019, someone loosened the lug nuts on one of the tires on his vehicle enough that he noticed the tire wobbling in his side-view mirror. Humphrey reported that incident to police, but no arrest was made because there wasn’t evidence to show who loosened the nuts holding the wheel on.

Humphrey said he told university officials about the harassment and that he had seen some of the other players selling drugs at the apartment building where they all lived. But former football coach Les Miles responded by suggesting the players work it out between themselves during full-contact drills in practice.

The newspaper reported that Miles and former KU athletic director Jeff Long didn’t respond to inquiries for this story, and KU compliance director David Reed and other KU Athletics officials declined to comment.

The Kansas City Star also contacted each of Humphrey’s four former teammates about his allegations. Two of them didn’t respond and two declined to comment. The newspaper did not name the other former players.

Humphrey said that ultimately the university offered to pay his tuition and his monthly stipend of $1,289 if he took online KU classes from his home in West Virginia and agreed not to talk about what happened. The university also agreed to reimburse Humphrey for his trip home from college and pay to ship his belongings to him from a storage unit in Lawrence. Those items were worth a little over $50,000.

Humphrey’s father, Jamie Humphrey, said his son has battled depression and started to see a psychiatrist since his time in Lawrence, and the family is considering a lawsuit against the university and the officials involved.

“Les Miles and Jeff Long swept this under the rug and tried to buy our silence,” Jamie Humphrey said. “This is how they operated while representing Kansas.”

Former football player says KU ignored harassment complaints

RAYMORE, Mo. (AP) — Police in suburban Kansas City have arrested a man accused of killing a woman last week in her Raymore home.

Dale Williamson, 41, of Independence faces charges of first-degree murder, armed criminal action and a weapons count in the death of 39-year-old Katie Kellen, police said. Kellen’s body was found Thursday night in her home. Police have not said how she died.

Suburban Kansas City police arrest man for woman's murder

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A South Carolina woman who admitted to helping swindle an elderly Wichita-area widow out of more than half a million dollars in a romance scam is due to be sentenced Monday in Sedgwick County District Court.

<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20069884">Kathy Heistand, 68, pleaded guilty </a>in May to the mistreatment of an elder person and theft.

An arrest affidavit said a 74-year-old recently widowed Kansas woman was contacted on Facebook in 2020 by someone who said his name was Victor Patrick and claimed to be a man working on an oil rig in the Gulf of Texas. The two developed an online romance.

Patrick said he’d be with the widow as soon as he retired, but meanwhile he needed money, and he asked the widow to send money to Heistand, who would give the money to Patrick.

The widow sent six cashier’s checks payable to Heistand for a total of $532,000. The widow’s financial institutions warned her it was a scam but she didn’t believe it. During the investigation Heistand said she didn’t know Patrick and that the widow sent her money as part of a business arrangement.

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office is recommending five years of probation with 61 months in prison if Heistand violates probation, records show.

The DA’s office said it is recommending probation because Heistand had a “lesser role in the fraud against the victim,” she helped in the investigation. Paying restitution to the victim while on probation outweighs the benefit of sending the 68-year-old to prison.

The district attorney’s office plans a Monday news conference to discuss the prominence of romance scams in the Wichita area, according to a news release

Romance scam: Woman swindled Kan. widow of $532,000

DENVER (AP) — Four people have been arrested and more than a dozen weapons and hundreds of rounds of ammunition have been seized at a downtown Denver hotel that is close to several events planned in conjunction with this week's Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Officers responding to a tip searched two rooms at the Maven Hotel, a block from Coors Field, on Friday night. Three men and a woman in their 40s were arrested, and two vehicles were impounded to be searched for evidence.

The recovered weapons included several rifles, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

So far, investigators have not found any evidence to suggest the group was plotting a mass shooting or other similar attack, the official said, while cautioning that the investigation is still in its early stages. The official could not discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Authorities were called after an employee found the guns in a hotel room, the official said.

The men who were arrested are being investigated for possession of a weapon by a previous offender, and the woman, who has a separate warrant, is being investigated on a drug charge.

“We have no reason to believe this incident was connected to terrorism or a threat directed at the All-Star Game,” the FBI said in a statement released Sunday. “We are not aware of any threat to the All-Star Game events, venues, players or the community at this time.”

Meanwhile, Mayor Michael Hancock and police Chief Paul Pazen praised the hotel’s staff for alerting authorities and sought to ease any concerns that the area around the ballpark is unsafe. They declined to say what, if anything, the suspects were planning to do with the firearms.

“We don’t know what we don’t know. That’s what the investigation is all about,” Pazen said during a news conference. “We need to identify exactly, to the extent possible, why (the) individuals were here in the first place, why (the) proximity to downtown. We don’t have those answers.”

Coors Field will host the All-Star Game on Tuesday, but festivities have been underway in and around the ballpark and downtown for the past several days.

Police said in a statement that visitors should always be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious or illegal behavior.

Report: Hotel maid finds guns, ammo near MLB All-Star game

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Five Kansas City police officers facing criminal charges remain on the job, with four on administrative duty and one still on patrol.

Community leaders who have been critical of the Kansas City Police Department say they are particularly angry that a detective charged with manslaughter, Eric DeValkenaere, remains on administrative duty and is being paid,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article252529253.html">according&nbsp;</a>to the Kansas City Star.

“I think it’s despicable,” said Randy Fikki, senior pastor of Unity Southeast, who led several Black Lives Matter demonstrations last summer.

Police spokeswoman Capt. Leslie Foreman said department’s policies give supervisors discretion to determine whether to suspend officers and whether that suspension should be paid or unpaid.

That is despite a separate policy that says officers charged with a crime related to their use of a department firearm will be suspended, which would apply to DeValkenaere, who is charged in the 2019 shooting of Cameron Lamb in Lamb’s backyard following a traffic incident. Officials said that policy requiring suspension when an officer's gun is used is under review.

DeValkenaere was suspended with pay after the shooting, but returned to work in January. He is the only one charged in an incident involving a gun.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, who serves on the supervisory Board of Kansas City Police Commissioners, said officers charged with felonies should be suspended with pay. But Lucas said the department's policies need to be clarified.

“I would think that we need to be consistent with the policies as produced,” Lucas said. “In all situations, to the extent that there is a departure, I find it very troubling. And I would hope, although not be optimistic, that the board would ensure that those policies are being followed.”

Some policing experts criticized the decision to keep officers who have been charged on the force.

“Criminal charges raise serious concerns about an officer’s fitness to protect and serve,” said Lauren Bonds, legal director for the National Police Accountability Project. “The chief’s decision to allow officers to continue their employment while charges are pending needlessly exposes communities to abuse and undermines the prosecutor’s decision to pursue an indictment.”

Sgt. Matthew Neal was indicted last year on a felony assault charge for allegedly placing his knee on the back of a 15-year-old boy’s neck and forcing the boy’s head into the pavement while in handcuffs.

Matthew Brummett and Charles Prichard both face felony assault charges for alleged excessive use of force when they arrested Breona Hill in May 2019. A video showed officers pinning her to the ground and slamming her head into the pavement.

Nicholas McQuillen was charged this year with misdemeanor assault for allegedly pepper spraying a teenager at protests last summer. He is the only charged officer still on patrol.

All five officers are white. All of the victims in the cases are Black.

5 Kansas City officers charged with crimes still on the job

KANSAS CITY— A Mexican national who has been deported seven times after illegally entering the United States was sentenced in federal court today for his role in a Daviess County, Missouri, marijuana-growing operation where law enforcement officers seized nearly $10 million worth of plants, according to the United State's Attorney.

Sergio Medina-Perez, 47, of El Monte, California, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays to six years in federal prison without parole. This federal sentence must be served consecutively to any sentence imposed as a result of his violation of probation in an unrelated California case. Medina-Perez pleaded guilty in California to being a felon in possession of a firearm, cultivating marijuana and resisting arrest for a marijuana grow operation in Shasta County, Calif. He received a suspended imposition of sentence and was placed on three years’ probation, but indicted eight months later in this federal case.

The court also ordered Medina-Perez to forfeit the Daviess County property to the government.

On Feb. 3, 2021, Medina-Perez pleaded guilty to participating in a conspiracy to manufacture and to possess marijuana plants with the intent to distribute. Medina-Perez also pleaded guilty to illegally reentering the United States after having been deported following a felony conviction.

Law enforcement officers, who had been keeping the marijuana grow site under surveillance, executed a search warrant at the property on Aug. 27, 2018. The plants were in a clearing inside a large area of timber. A distinct path led from a building in the wooded area to the area containing the marijuana plants.

Officers located approximately 2,464 cultivated marijuana plants. With an approximate street value of $1,800 per pound of marijuana, this results in approximately $9,757,440 in marijuana plants seized.

Two days later, on Aug. 29, 2018, Medina-Perez was arrested near the grow site. He told law enforcement that he came to Missouri from California to work as a trimmer at the marijuana grow operation and was paid $100 for every pound of marijuana that he trimmed.

Medina-Perez has been deported from the United States on seven previous occasions. He was convicted in Yakima County, Washington, of possessing cocaine on Sept. 22, 1993, and deported in 1995. He illegally reentered the United States and was deported again on April 3, 1998; Aug. 30, 2002; April 4, 2003; Dec. 17, 2005; July 6, 2006; and July 11, 2006.

Co-defendant Miguel Pulido-Maldonado, also known as “Mona,” 30, ran into the woods to escape custody but was arrested on Aug. 30, 2018; he was covered in mud, his arms had numerous bites from either mosquitos or other insects and it appeared he had been outside for several days. Pulido-Maldonado had previously illegally entered the United States and was removed on Jan. 30, 2017. Pulido-Maldonado was sentenced to three years in federal prison without parole after pleading guilty to his role in the drug-trafficking conspiracy and to illegally reentering the United States.

Plant trimmer on $10M KC-area marijuana farm sentenced to prison

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have made an arrest.

Just before&nbsp; 4a.m. Thursday, police responded to Ed Bozarth auto dealership, 3731 SW Topeka Blvd. in Topeka after receiving a report of someone burglarizing multiple vehicles on the property, according to police department spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.

Responding officers located a man walking in the parking lot matching the description of the suspect later identified as 39-year-old David A. Thomas. A police K-9 apprehended&nbsp; Thomas and he&nbsp;was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested&nbsp;charges of Burglary, Theft &lt; $1,500 Motor Vehicle&nbsp; and interference with law enforcement.

 </figure>SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have made an arrest.Just before&nbsp; 4a.m. Thursday, police responded to Ed Bozarth auto dealership, 3731 SW Topeka Blvd. in Topeka after receiving a report of someone burglarizing multiple vehicles on the property, according to police department spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.Responding officers located a man walking in the parking lot matching the description of the suspect later identified as 39-year-old David A. Thomas. A police K-9 apprehended&nbsp; Thomas and he&nbsp;was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested&nbsp;charges of Burglary, Theft &lt; $1,500 Motor Vehicle&nbsp; and interference with law enforcement.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas&nbsp; man who shot a woman and left her to die in south Sedgwick County was sentenced to life in prison.

 District Judge Tyler Roush sentenced 43-year-old Darnell Coleman,&nbsp;of Wichita to life in prison with parole eligibility after 50-years, according to Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett.

On October 30th, 2017, a motorist found the body of Tamsen Kayzer next to railroad tracks a mile north of Peck on south Meridian. The 40-year-old woman had been shot five times. 

Over two weeks later, Sedgwick County Sheriff detectives arrested Coleman at his Wichita home.

A jury found Coleman guilty of 1st degree murder in April of this year. Judge Roush also ordered Coleman to pay $3,245.75 in restitution to pay for the victim's burial.

Kansas man shot woman five times, left her to die

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects after a traffic stop.

Just before 4p.m. Thursday deputies and a Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at 19th and Maple Street in Independence, Kansas, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.

The deputy contacted the driver identified as Joshua Werner of Cherryvale and a passenger identified as Judy Eastwood of Neodesha.

While speaking with Werner, the deputy detected an odor of marijuana, according to Wade. He also learned Werner did not have a valid driver's license.&nbsp; The deputy arrested him for not having the license.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies found marijuana, meth, drug paraphernalia and cash. All the illegal items were found on Eastwood's side of the vehicle and in her bag, according to Wade.

Deputies took both of Werner and Eastwood to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections. Eastwood transported narcotics she had concealed into the correctional facility. She is being held on requested drug and trafficking charges. Werner was jailed for the licensce violation.

Upon arrival, officers contacted a 30-year-old woman and 50-year-old woman.&nbsp; &nbsp;They reported getting into a verbal disturbance with&nbsp;32-year-old Mitchell Jensen of Wichita as they entered the apartments parking lot.&nbsp; Jensen then followed them and pointed a handgun at the 30-year-old.&nbsp; No one was injured in the incident.

Officers located Jensen at an apartment in the complex, and he was arrested without incident on requested charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm while under the influence. Officers also recovered a handgun during the investigation, according to Davidson.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Friends have <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/wsph3-support-for-the-russell-family">established a fundraiser </a>to assist the family of a pregnant Kansas woman who died after a 4-vehicle crash in Wichita that involved a driver fleeing police.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On GoFundme friends wrote: Tuesday July 7, we lost an amazing individual. Samantha Russell tragically passed away in a senseless traffic incident. She leaves behind her husband and her brand new baby boy, Mac. Samantha was an amazing individual who left an impact on everyone she met.

Just before 5 pm on Tuesday, police were dispatched to a disturbance with a gun at a hotel in the 7500 block of West Taft in Wichita, according to Officer Trevor Macy.&nbsp;

At the scene, a 35-year-old male victim reported that a man had robbed him at gunpoint. The victim was able to run away and reported seeing the suspect leaving the hotel with another male suspect.

The robbery suspect was identified as 34-year-old Jamie Chavez of Wichita, who was wanted in connection to a previous robbery. He was located near Maple and Ridge and taken into custody. The other suspect identified as<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=161387">&nbsp;Javan Jermaine Ervin, 37,</a>&nbsp;Wichita,&nbsp;&nbsp;began to flee in a 2002 Dodge Ram northbound on Ridge Road. Officers began pursuing him, but the pursuit was terminated due to the high speed and traffic conditions.

The pickup continued at a high rate of speed, failed to stop at the red traffic light at Central Avenue and collided with a westbound 2000 Chevy Silverado driven by Jordan Samuel Peltzer, 40, Henderson, Nevada.

The impact caused the driver side rear wheels and tires to detach from the vehicle which collided with a 2016 Jeep Compass driven by Connie L. Holt, 73, Wichita, that was stopped on the inside left turn lane from South bound Ridge Road to East bound Central Avenue.

The Dodge Ram then collided with 2019 Mazda CX3 driven by 22-year-old Samantha Lee Russell of Wichita which was stopped behind the Jeep. The Dodge Ram then rolled onto its top and came to a rest in the North bound lanes of Ridge Road.

EMS transported Russell to Wesley Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.&nbsp;She was 33 weeks pregnant. Doctors delivered the baby who was hospitalized in critical condition, according to Macy.

Ervin, Peltzer and Holt were not injured. Ervin attempted to run from the crash but police quickly took him into custody.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Police also booked Jamie Chavez into the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility on requested charges of Aggravated Robbery (one from a previous case) and felon in possession of a firearm. Chavez is on parole through the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Friends help man, newborn after Kan. woman killed in crash

Just before 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sedgwick County Emergency Communications received a call reporting an active shooter at the Maize Airport located at 8001 W 45th Street North,&nbsp; according to Lt. Benjamin Blick.&nbsp;

The caller reported two suspects at the airport and another suspect leaving in a vehicle. The caller also provided a description of the vehicle including the registration plate number.

Deputies and officers from several agencies responded to the airport and located a 49-year-old man and&nbsp; 35-year-old Yancy Hermosillo near the area where the shooting allegedly occurred.

Both men were detained. During a search of the area for casualties, spent shell casings and firearms were observed, but no victims or evidence of injury was found. The vehicle reported to have left the scene was located in southeast Wichita occupied by a 27-year-old man.

After questioning, the 49 and 27-year-old were released. Hermosillo was <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=37220">arrested for an outstanding federal warrant </a>for drug and weapons violations.

During the investigation detectives determined, the shots fired at the airport were not reckless or unauthorized and did not support the elements of a crime.

Kan. man arrested after report of active shooting at Kan. airport

AURORA, Colo. — A 26-year-old Kansas man has been sentenced
 to life in Colorado state prison for a 2019 crime spree that included 
the rape of a Mexican au pair in a Cherry Hills Village home and the 
carjacking of a woman outside an Aurora gym.

Arapahoe County District Court Judge Ben Leutwyler on 
Friday sentenced Tre Carrasco to a total of 136 years behind bars for 
the gaggle of convictions returned against him earlier this year, 
including felony sexual assault, aggravated robbery, car theft, false 
reporting, trespassing and attempting to influence a public servant.

An Arapahoe County jury convicted Carrasco of 11 charges following a five-day trial in May. He was acquitted of two charges.

Jurors agreed Carrasco&nbsp;<a href="https://sentinelcolorado.com/0trending/kansas-man-accused-of-trying-to-assault-multiple-women-1-in-aurora-days-after-getting-out-of-prison/">attempted to kidnap a woman in Aurora</a>&nbsp;while
 stealing her car outside of a 24-hour Fitness on South Abilene Street 
on Feb. 7, 2019. They also concluded that he used the same car to drive 
to a Cherry Hills Village home in the middle of the day, where he raped 
another woman less than a week later.

Aurora police arrested Carrasco, a native of Hays,
 on Feb. 12 after pulling him over near the intersection of East Colfax 
Avenue and Galena Street.

Carrasco has also been accused of raping another woman at 
gunpoint in the passenger seat of her car Kansas days prior to the 
Colorado crimes. He has yet to face charges filed against him in that 
case.

At the sentencing hearing Friday, prosecutors outlined 
Carrasco’s extensive history of lecherous behavior, dating back to his 
first offenses committed when he was 13 years old in Kansas.

Deputy District Attorney Casey Brown pointed to more than 
half a dozen instances of Carrasco peeping into windows and violently 
sexually assaulting women around Hays starting in 2008. The pattern 
culminated in July 2011, when Carrasco was tried and convicted as an 
adult for pinning a woman down and forcing her to perform oral sex on 
him. Carrasco, who was 16 when the offense occurred, reportedly told the
 woman that he would “be back” as he fled the scene.

In April 2013, Carrasco was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hayspost.com/2013/04/08/hays-teen-will-be-sentenced-today/">sentenced to slightly more than eight years in prison</a>&nbsp;for the July 2011 assault. He was released form prison in Kansas days before his crime spree in Colorado, records show.

Carrasco incurred a litany of disciplinary infractions 
while in Kansas prisons between 2014 and 2018, including using 
stimulants, disobeying orders and disrespecting corrections officers, 
according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.

Carrasco’s public defense attorney argued that the Kansas 
man has not had the chance to engage with meaningful rehabilitation 
because he was entered in the Kansas foster care system at age 11, and 
spent the latter half of his teens and early 20s in prison.

Brown, who argued for Leutwyler to impose the maximum sentence of 168 years in prison, disagreed.

“The defendant has made no effort to engage himself in 
rehabilitation,” he said. “He’s shown the court that he is not only 
unwilling but also incapable of being rehabilitated at this point.

Carrasco’s attorney said that his client has met with a 
counselor while detained at the Arapahoe County jail and gotten a job as
 a barber while detained in prison.

In July 2020, Carrasco pleaded guilty to a felony 
contraband charge while in custody in Arapahoe County, and he was 
sentenced to two years in Colorado state prison. He’s been detained at 
the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility in Buena Vista since then, but
 he was transferred back to the local county jail to await his 
sentencing.

Carrasco has been detained since being arrested in early 2019, earning 878 days of time served.

Leutwyler said the sentence was intended to prevent Carrasco from ultimately offending again.

“I am fully convinced — 100% convinced — that there is no woman safe in America if you are out of prison,” he said. “You
 will continue to rape people. You will steal from them, you will break 
into their homes, break into their cars; you will do whatever you feel 
you want to do.”

Neither Carrasco nor the women he victimized addressed the court at the hearing Friday.

Carrasco’s attorney suggested his client plans to appeal the convictions returned against him.

Kan. man sentenced to  to 136 years for rape, carjacking 

A Hays man is facing two counts of aggravated assault after reportedly threatening a Hays police officer and a bystander with a knife.

Just before 9 p.m. June 28, the Ellis County dispatch center received a report of a suspicious person at 13th and Main, according to Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler.&nbsp;

The initial report received by dispatch indicated an individual had a beer in one hand and meat cleaver in the other, he said.

At the same time that report was being called in, an off-duty police officer was leaving the Law Enforcement Center and encountered the individual.

That officer said the person was noted to be mumbling to himself and was heard to reference suicide by cop, according to Scheibler.

Officer John Zimmer and Sgt. David Vilaysing&nbsp;made contact, but the suspect was uncooperative and attempted to leave the scene.

They initially noted the suspect appeared unarmed but when he began talking he pulled a large knife from his waistband and threatened to kill the officers and a nearby civilian, Scheibler said, but the officers were able to successfully deescalate the situation.

"We truly had the best guy available for the call," he said, noting Vilaysing is the deescalation trainer for the department.

Thanks to the officers' efforts, the suspect discarded the weapon and was taken into custody without further incident.

Brian Leslie Winters, 49, Hays, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault.&nbsp;

"I'm grateful for the professionalism of the officers that responded," Scheibler said. "They were able to verbally deesclate the situation, make it safe and take Mr. Winters into custody without anybody getting hurt."

Winters has a prior conviction for theft, from an incident on Jan. 10, 2020, and was discharged on Feb. 22.

Kan. man allegedly threatened officer with meat cleaver

HUTCHINSON — The Reno County District Attorney's office dismissed&nbsp; charges of kidnapping and stalking against a Kansas man felon Thursday.

The kidnapping charge against 56-year-old Thomas Lee Boyd was dismissed without prejudice which means charges can be refiled at a later date.

Boyd was arrested May 9, following an incident involving a Hutchison woman after he allegedly followed her in her vehicle then confronted her. 

Andrew Davidson with the District Attorney’s office stated that after a second interview between law enforcement and the victim the charges were dismissed.

Boyd is still being held in the Reno County Correctional Facility on a bond of $125,000 for other pending cases against him.

Kidnapping charge dismissed against violent Kan. felon

KENNESAW, Ga. (AP) — Authorities on Thursday afternoon arrested a man in the killing of three men found shot to death on the golf course of a suburban Atlanta country club.

Cobb County sheriff’s deputies and U.S. marshals arrested Bryan Rhoden in Chamblee, more than 25 miles southeast of where the slain men were discovered Saturday, Cobb County Police Chief Tim Cox said during a news conference Thursday evening.

Rhoden faces three counts of murder, three counts of aggravated assault and two counts of kidnapping, Cox said. The police chief described Rhoden as the “lone shooter” in the slayings but he declined to give further details about what prompted the violence.

“We literally had detectives that have worked around the clock and some have literally slept in their offices since July 3rd trying to clear this case,” Cox said.

Police say golf pro Eugene Siller was gunned down Saturday when he went to find out why a white pickup truck had driven onto the 10th green at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, northwest of Atlanta.

Two other men were found dead from gunshot wounds in the bed of the pickup truck. Police identified them as 46-year-old Henry Valdez of California and 76-year-old Paul Pierson of Topeka.

Investigators believe that Siller, 46, was slain because he came upon a “crime in progress,” police have said. It doesn’t appear that he was targeted, and the other men appear to have “no relation to the location at all,” police had said in a statement. Pierson was the truck’s registered owner.

Police haven’t commented on any possible motive for the killings of the two men whose bodies were found in the pickup.

It wasn’t immediately known if Rhoden has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Police: Arrest in killing of Kan. man, 2 others at golf course

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a wanted Kansas felon after a violent attack ona woman.

Just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to an assault call at a business in the 3000 block of East Douglas in Wichita, according to Office Charley Davidson.

At the scene, a 55-year-old woman reported going to her car after leaving the business when she was approached by&nbsp;64-year-old Veryl Crawford of Wichita. He pushed her and struck her multiple times with a rock causing serious injuries.&nbsp; Crawford then took the woman's cell phone and wallet and fled on foot.

With the help of an eyewitness, officers located Crawford in the 3200 block of East Chatfield as he was attempting to hide evidence.&nbsp; &nbsp;Police arrested Crawford without incident and booked into jail on requested charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, interference with law enforcement, possession of drug paraphernalia, and a warrant through the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC), according to Davidson.

Crawford has multiple previous felony convictions and is currently on parolee through KDOC.

Police: Wanted Kan. felon attacked woman with a rock

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting that left two people with non-life threatening injuries.

Just after 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to the 2400 block of SW Buchanan Street in Topeka after a caller stated they had been shot at, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.

The caller left the scene prior to officer’s arrival. A short time later, two people arrived at a local hospital by private vehicle. Both had non-life threatening injuries believed to be consistent with the earlier shooting.

While investigating the shooting, officers located a 20-year-old later identified as Tyzale J. Banks-Hall, 20 of Topeka who was in possession of a stolen firearm.&nbsp;

After further investigation, police arrested Banks-Hall and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Possession of stolen Firearm with value less than $25,000.&nbsp;

DAWSON COUNTY, NE.—Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested one person after locating more than 260 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Dawson County.

At approximately 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, a trooper performed a traffic stop on an eastbound Ford Transit Van for driving on the shoulder of I-80 near Lexington at mile marker 238. During the traffic stop, an NSP K9 detected the odor of a controlled substance coming from inside the vehicle.

Troopers searched the vehicle and located 262 pounds of marijuana contained in large boxes in the cargo area of the van. The driver, David Hernandez Fuentes, 24, of Ceres, California, was arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and no drug tax stamp. He was lodged in Dawson County Jail.

State troopers find 260 pounds of marijuana in traffic stop

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A federal judge issued an arrest warrant Thursday for a&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;man who skipped his sentencing for a debt selling scam that involved millions of dollars.

Joel Tucker, of Prairie Village, pleaded guilty last year to criminal counts of transporting stolen money, bankruptcy fraud and tax evasion.

His attorneys said Thursday that Tucker was in&nbsp;Colorado&nbsp;dealing with a critical family situation, The Kansas City Star reported.

U.S. District Court Judge Roseann Ketchmark issued the arrest warrant and set a new sentencing hearing for Tuesday.

Most of Tucker’s charges stem from his selling phony consumer information to debt collectors, who then tried to get consumers to pay debts they didn't owe. In 2017, the Federal Trade Commission obtained a $4 million judgment against Tucker for the same scam.

Tucker's brother, former professional race car driver Scott Tucker, is serving a nearly 17-year sentence in federal prison for running an illegal payday loan operation in Overland Park that federal authorities said exploited more than 2 million borrowers.

And by hiding his income and assets then lying about it to federal agents, he victimized every honest citizen who obeys the law and pays their income taxes. His thievery allowed him to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle for a short time, but he won’t be entitled to such luxuries in federal prison.”“Today, Mr. Tucker admitted he evaded the payment of taxes assessed against him. Despite receiving millions of dollars, Mr. Tucker used such funds to sustain a lavish lifestyle and not fulfill his civic duty,” said Adam Steiner, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the St. Louis Field Office. “We are determined at the IRS and Department of Justice to halt tax evasion, and the facts outlined in today’s plea are strong indicators that we can and will find this fraudulent activity.”Joel Jerome Tucker, 51, Prairie Village, Kansas, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark to one count of transporting stolen money across state lines, one count of bankruptcy fraud, and one count of tax evasion.Tucker, working through various companies, serviced payday loan businesses. Tucker’s company names changed over the years; the primary company was eData Solutions, LLC. eData, formally registered on July 29, 2009, did not make loans directly to borrowers; it collected loan application information, referred to as leads, and sold those leads to its approximately 70 payday lender clients. As a loan servicer, eData also provided software for payday lenders.&nbsp;Tucker and the other owners of eData sold the company to the Wyandotte Indian tribe in 2012. However, despite selling his interest in eData, Tucker maintained a file of 7.8 million leads he had acquired through eData, containing detailed customer information (including names, addresses, bank accounts, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, etc.). eData had collected the detailed customer information from online payday loan applications or inquiries to its payday lender clients; the file did not represent loans that were made. In addition, Tucker obtained and retained data regarding defaulted payday loans eData had acquired from a number of different payday lender clients. Tucker used these files to create falsified debt portfolios.By pleading guilty today, Tucker admitted that he engaged in a fraudulent debt scheme from 2014 to 2016. This scheme involved marketing, distributing, and selling false debt portfolios. Tucker defrauded third party debt collectors and millions of individuals listed as debtors through the sale of falsified debt portfolios. Tucker sold supposed debts which: 1) he didn’t personally own; 2) were not true debts; 3) had already been sold to other buyers; and 4) contained false lenders, false loan dates, false loan amounts, and false payment status. Tucker received as much as $7.3 million from the sale of false debt portfolios.&nbsp;As part of his fraud scheme, Tucker transferred the proceeds of the fraud scheme across state lines.Tucker also admitted that he executed a related bankruptcy fraud scheme in 2015. In his bankruptcy fraud scheme, Tucker also sold fraudulent debt, which entered the United States Bankruptcy Courts nationwide. When the United States Bankruptcy Court investigated these purported debts which were presented as claims in bankruptcy cases, Tucker provided false information and testimony to the Bankruptcy Court in order to conceal his scheme.For tax years 2014 - 2016, neither Tucker personally nor any of his companies filed federal tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service. Tucker told IRS agents that he had no income and was living on borrowed money, including a lot of borrowed money from his mother. In reality, Tucker used nominee bank accounts to conceal income and assets and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal living expenses such as vehicles, chartered jets, travel and entertainment, and a personal residence. Tucker also submitted a form to the IRS in which he omitted listing as an asset his membership in the Vail Mountain Club, for which he received $275,000 in 2016.Under the terms of today’s plea agreement, Tucker must pay $8,057,079.95 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. Tucker also must forfeit to the government $5,000, which is the amount of stolen proceeds transferred across state lines as referenced in the specific count to which he pleaded guilty.&nbsp;Under federal statutes, Tucker is subject to a sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.
