KANSAS CITY (AP) — A man charged with killing six people on or near trails in south Kansas City four to five years ago has been found not competent to stand trial.

A judge ruled Monday that Fredrick Scott, 26, of Kansas City, is mentally unfit to aid in his own defense.

Scott is charged with first-degree murder in the separate shooting deaths of 57-year-old Steven Gibbons; 54-year-old John Palmer; 67-year-old David Lenox; 57-year-old Timothy Rice; 61-year-old Michael Darby; and 64-year-old Karen Harmeyer.

All of the killings occurred in 2016 and 2017 along city hiking and biking trails that frightened the community and users of the trails. Scott has been in custody since his arrest nearly four years ago.

Police have said that in the days before his arrest, Scott&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cb6ff074d84644b9a41f53075819e695">reported four handguns stolen</a>&nbsp;from him. Police believe those guns were used in the killings and that Scott reported them stolen to throw off investigators.

Police have said Scott told detectives after his arrest that he was angry about the 2015 shooting death of his half brother. Scott's mother has said he suffered from delusions as a result of undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenia.

The judge set an August hearing for re-evaluation of Scott’s mental fitness.

An investigation found that the victim was involved in a disturbance with the suspect identified as 37-year-old Lindsey Maves who sprayed the victim with a flammable substance and lit her on fire.

Maves then hit the victim in the face with something as a witness tried to put out the flames and fled the scene. Police located her late Monday afternoon, brought her in for questioning and later arrested her on requested charges of attempted murder, arson and willful injury, according to a media release.

Update: Woman accused of setting another woman on fire 

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Wichita Police officer on several allegations.

The Sedgwick County District Attorney has charged Wichita Police Department Officer Thomas Wallace on one count of sexual exploitation of a child, according to police department spokesman Officer Charley Davidson.

The District Attorney is also considering charges of stalking against Wallace.

Wichita Police officials learned of Wallace possibly stalking a woman known to him, stemming from an investigation by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office that began late last year concerning another Wichita Police Department employee. 

The investigation into these allegations led to his arrest in February and the current charges, according to Davidson.

Wallace has been employed with WPD for five years and was placed on unpaid administrative leave Tuesday, pending the outcome of the criminal and internal investigation.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Authorities are investigating a report of alleged stalking and have arrested a police officer.&nbsp;

On Friday afternoon authorities booked Wichita Police Department Officer Thomas Wallace into the Sedgwick County Jail on two counts of misdemeanor stalking, according to police spokesman officer Charley Davidson.

Officials learned of Wallace possibly stalking a woman known to him, stemming from an investigation by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) that began late last year concerning another Wichita police department employee.&nbsp; 

The sheriff's office investigated in order to avoid conflicts of interest.&nbsp;

Wallace has been employed with WPD for five years and was placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the criminal and internal investigation.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two Kansas men on drug charges after a traffic stop.

Just after 1a.m. Monday, a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on a green 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck near SW 11th Street and SW Topeka Boulevard, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

Sheriff: Failure to stop at red light leads to drug distribution arrest

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Police are investigating the shooting death of a woman in a southeastern Kansas City neighborhood.

The shooting happened around 10 a.m. Sunday in a home along East Linwood, just blocks from the Kansas City Veterans Affairs Medical Center, police said in a news release. Police had not released the woman’s name by early Monday morning, and no other details of the shooting were given.

Police also had not announced any arrests in the case by Monday morning.

The woman's death marked the 68th homicide this year in Kansas City. The city set a record for homicides in 2020 with 182.

GYPSUM - An 84-year-old newspaper delivery person was injured early Saturday morning when he was dragged while trying to prevent his vehicle from being stolen in Gypsum.

Robert Rogers had gotten out of his 2000 Subaru Legacy to deliver a newspaper in the 400 block of Maple Street (Kansas Highway 4) at 4:10 a.m. Saturday when a gray 2004 Honda Civic pulled up behind the Legacy, according to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

The driver of the Civic got out and jumped behind the wheel of the Legacy. Rogers attempted to stop the man, who drove off, dragging Rogers for about 20 yards, Soldan said. Rogers suffered road rash, he added.

A Galaxy S20 cellphone belonging to Rogers and valued at $1,000 was still in the vehicle.

Soldan identified the person who drove off in the Legacy as Hassan Williford, 38, of Salina.

Officers arrested Williford later on Saturday for allegedly trying to break into a residence in Morris County, according to Soldan. Although the Legacy has yet to be found, the key to it was in Williford's pocket.

The Legacy is described as being blue and having a brush guard on the front and an orange strap holding the hood closed, Soldan said. It was valued at $1,500.

The Civic that was left in Gypsum was reported stolen that same night from an acquaintance of Williford's in Mitchell County.

Williford was booked into the Saline County jail on a requested charge of aggravated robbery, according to Soldan. Additional charges may be requested, he added.

84-year-old Kansas man injured in carjacking

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged assault and have made an arrest.

Just before 9p.m. Saturday, police&nbsp;filed a report for aggravated assault, domestic battery, and criminal damage to property in Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Officers listed 18- and 44-year-old men as the victims when it was reported a 44-year-old suspect damaged the 18-year-old victim's car and an 18-year-old suspect punched out a window in the 44-year-old victim's car and threatened him with a knife. 

Police arrested Eli Smith, 18, of Ogden, on requested charges of aggravated assault, criminal damage to property and domestic battery. Smith is confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $5,000.&nbsp;The estimated total loss associated with this case is unknown at this time, according to RCPD.

RCPD: Riley Co. teen accused of violent threat

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Texas man wanted for robbery in Nebraska following a two state pursuit Saturday night. 

Just before 11p.m., a police officer stopped a 2015 Dodge Durango for a traffic infraction in the 400 Block of Arizona Street in Holton, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.&nbsp;

 The suspect vehicle stopped in the Casey’s General Store parking lot. It was discovered that the driver identified as 23-year-old Davionne Marquise Stark-Briggs of Houston, Texas was wanted out of Nebraska on a felony robbery warrant. 

The suspect was to be considered armed and dangerous. The police officer attempted to arrest Stark-Briggs when he allegedly fled in his vehicle striking the Holton Police vehicle. 

Jackson County Deputies entered into the pursuit with Holton Police north of Holton on U.S. Highway 75. 

The pursuit continued into Brown County and into Nebraska. Several law enforcement agencies attempted to use tire deflation devices to stop the pursuit, however, the pursuit continued through Dawson, Nebraska and then east to Fall City. 

Just north of Fall City, the suspect vehicle left the highway and traveled into the ditch. Starks-Briggs fled on foot from the vehicle heading east into a field.

 Jackson County deputies pursued him on foot capturing him and taking him into custody about 200 yards from where the vehicle pursuit ended. Deputies from Brown County and Richardson County, Nebraska assisted with the incident. Starks-Briggs is currently being held in the Richardson County Jail on requested charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle to Avoid Arrest, Willful Reckless Driving, Driving Under Suspension, Resisting Arrest, Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Prohibited Person. He is also being held on Lancaster County and Douglas County Nebraska warrants.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas woman accused in a stabbing made her first court appearance in the case June 9.

Mykala McAlpine, 20, of Wichita, is charged with aggravated battery, according to Sedgwick County District Attorney.

Just before 2:30 a.m. June 5, police responded to a residence in the 500 Block of East Marion in Wichita, according to Officer Charley Davidson. They found a 19-year-old victim with a number of stab wounds.

EMS transported the man to a local&nbsp; hospital for treatment and police arrested McApline.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for June 17, according to the district attorney. She was jailed on<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20061820">&nbsp;</a>$75,000 bond and is no longer in custody.

Kansas woman charged for violent knife attack

KANSAS CITY —A Kansas City man who called 911 to aid his mother was charged in federal court Thursday after police officers responded to their residence and found evidence of drug trafficking and illegal firearms, according to the United States Attorney's office.

Michael Cummings II, 39, was charged with possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and with possessing firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking in a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Mo. Cummings remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing on June 14.

According to an affidavit filed in support of today’s federal criminal complaint, police officers were called to Cummings’s residence on Monday night, June 7, when Cummings called 911 for emergency medical assistance for his mother. Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures on Cummings’s mother but she was unresponsive, and pronounced dead at approximately 12:04 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8.

Officers saw a loaded Heckler &amp; Koch .40-caliber handgun on the dining room table, next to a pile of cash, and an SKS-style assault rifle with a magazine leaning against the wall of a stairwell. Officers arrested Cummings, who is a convicted felon, for illegally possessing the firearms.

Officers then obtained a warrant and searched the residence. In addition to the two firearms, officers also seized $618 found on the table and under the couch cushion.

In one bedroom, officers found a Pioneer Arms 7.62 x 39mm AKM-47-style pistol in the closet, a baggie that contained .24 grams of a fentanyl/heroin compound, baggies that contained a total of 351.37 grams of methamphetamine, two plastic baggies that contained a total of 28.1 grams of crack cocaine, a baggie that contained marijuana, and approximately $3,512 in cash.

In another bedroom, officers found a Ruger .22-caliber pistol on a shelf.

&nbsp;In another bedroom, officers found a Smith and Wesson AR-15 style assault rifle in the closet and a safe that contained $175,100 in cash and a Ruger revolver that had previously been reported as stolen.

Officers arrested Cummings, who is a convicted felon, for illegally possessing the firearms.Officers then obtained a warrant and searched the residence. In addition to the two firearms, officers also seized $618 found on the table and under the couch cushion.In one bedroom, officers found a Pioneer Arms 7.62 x 39mm AKM-47-style pistol in the closet, a baggie that contained .24 grams of a fentanyl/heroin compound, baggies that contained a total of 351.37 grams of methamphetamine, two plastic baggies that contained a total of 28.1 grams of crack cocaine, a baggie that contained marijuana, and approximately $3,512 in cash.In another bedroom, officers found a Ruger .22-caliber pistol on a shelf.&nbsp;In another bedroom, officers found a Smith and Wesson AR-15 style assault rifle in the closet and a safe that contained $175,100 in cash and a Ruger revolver that had previously been reported as stolen.

Police track down Kan. man wanted for aggravated burglary

RENO COUNTY— A Kansas City man who was part of a shooting that injured two people near the Hutchinson Walmart will spend a little more than a year in prison.

Deante Watley-Jones, 22,&nbsp; pleaded to two counts of aggravated assault in the shooting of Darin Rodriguez Nov. 9, 2019, during a confrontation between occupants of two vehicles.&nbsp;

Watley-Jones could have received a much longer sentence, but the state and defense agreed to the plea on a less-severe charge. The defense asked for probation in the case, but Judge Joe McCarville noted that he could not find enough reason to support the defendant's claim of self-defense.

According to police, the argument started near the intersection of Ring Road and 17th Avenue. When Rodriguez got out of the vehicle, he was allegedly shot by Jones, who was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle. The bullet then went through the open door of the victim's car, ricocheted off the interior, and grazed the driver of the suspect's car, 74-year-old Paula Thomas.

Both victims were taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where they were treated and released

Man sentenced for Kansas road-rage shooting

GEARY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating the fatal Friday shooting in Junction City of 23-year-old&nbsp; Lavincent Perdue of Grandview Plaza have made an arrest.

Just before 4p.m. Friday, police responded to the Elite Cuts Barbershop in reference to shots that had been fired, according to Police Captain Cory Odell

Upon arrival officers located Perdue suffering from gunshot wounds. EMS transported him to Geary Community Hospital where he died. WIBW TV reported that Ft. Riley officials confirmed Perdue was a Specialist with the 1st Infantry Division.

On Saturday police reported the arrest of 21-year-old&nbsp; Willie Powell Jr., from Grandview Plaza, on a requested charge of 2nd-degree murder. Powell was taken into custody after turning himself into the Topeka Police Department early Saturday morning.

Powell is being held at the Geary County Detention Center pending his first appearance.&nbsp;The shooting incident occurred primarily in the parking lot of the business and there were no other injuries, according to Odell. This is the first homicide this year in Junction City

One person has died as a result of a shooting in the 700 block of West 6th Street in Junction City. Police have confirmed that it is a homicide case.&nbsp;

Police Captain Cory Odell said JCPD officers responded to the Elite Cuts Barbershop at that location at 3:46 p.m. in reference to shots that had been fired. "Upon arrival we located an adult male that was suffering from gunshot wounds. The subject was transported to Geary Community Hospital by Junction City EMS and ultimately passed away from his injuries. "

Police identified the victim as a 23-year old resident of Grandview Plaza named LaVincent Perdue.

The search for a suspect is under way, but Odell said no arrests have been made. "We do not have a suspect in custody at this time. We're asking for the public to please contact us with any information they may have. They can contact the Junction City Police Department or the Junction City / Geary County Crimestoppers to do so." Police have also confirmed that there is no active threat to the community.

Odell noted the shooting incident occurred primarily in the parking lot of the business. There were no other injuries. He said this is the first homicide this year in Junction City.

Suspect arrested in connection with fatal shooting in Junction City

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged child sex crime and have made an arrest.

The Riley County Police Department reported on Saturday that just before 3:30p.m. June 3, the Johnson County Sheriff's Department arrested 22-year-old Matthew Daniel Smith of Overland Park while he was in Manhattan for an alleged sex crime.

Deputies booked Smith on a $100,000 bond into jail in Johnson County on requested charges of rape of a victim under the age of 14, according to the report.&nbsp; &nbsp;He is no longer in custody.

Authorities released no additional details.

Investigators learned the woman was crossing the street, leaving a business in the 100 block of South Greenwood and a newer white northbound sedan struck her. It is believed the sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed, according to Davidson.&nbsp; &nbsp;

On Sunday, police found the unoccupied vehicle at a hotel at 36th&nbsp;and Rock Road in Wichita.

Officers also contacted contacted 18-year-old Bricetin Wedel of Wichita about the incident.&nbsp; Police then arrested him on a requested charge of aggravated battery and two counts of hit and run, according to Davidson.&nbsp; Wedel now faces new charges in the case. He is not longer in custody.

26-year-old Kan. woman injured in hit-and-run has died

BARTON COUNTY — After several months of investigation, law enforcement authorities arrested of Kansas man on weapons and drug charges.

Just after 3 p.m. Thursday, a Barton County Sheriff’s Office detectives and deputies executed a search warrant at 1809 Jackson Street in Great Bend, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir. A second warrant was executed at an adjoining building at 3108 18th Street. 

Deputies located multiple firearms hidden in a wall. At least one of the firearms was stolen, others are suspected to be modified to function fully automatic. Deputies also found homemade suppressors, according Bellendir along with thousands of rounds of ammunition.

Deputies arrested the resident identified as 55-year-old Matthew Jones of Great Bend. He is being held on a $100,000 bond on the requested charges of distribution of methamphetamine within 1000 feet of a school, criminal possession of a firearm by a drug user, criminal possession of a fully automatic firearm,&nbsp;criminal possession of a suppressor, possession of stolen property and possession of methamphetamine.

Over the last several months, the sheriff’s office received assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Great Bend Police Department. The United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has also been notified and is involved in the case, according to Bellendir.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The teenager who pulled out her cellphone and recorded the police restraint and death of George Floyd has been awarded a special citation by the Pulitzer Prizes. 

Darnella Frazier was cited “for courageously recording the murder of George Floyd, a video that spurred protests against police brutality, around the world, highlighting the crucial role of citizens in journalists' quest for truth and justice," the Pulitzer Prizes said.

Frazier’s publicist did not immediately respond to an Associated Press message seeking comment.

Frazier was 17 when she recorded the arrest of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, on May 25, 2020. Her video, which she posted to Facebook hours after it happened, sparked a reckoning on race in America and demands for an end to police brutality.

The video was seen worldwide and was prominent in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who knelt on Floyd's neck, pinning him to the pavement for 9 minutes, 29 seconds, as he said repeatedly that he couldn't breathe. Chauvin was convicted in April of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter. He will be sentenced June 25.

Frazier was also honored last year by PEN America, a literary and human rights organization. She was awarded the PEN/Benenson Courage Award.

Just after 7a.m. Thursday police responded to the 1200 Block of Yuma Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 74-year-old man hit a 52-year-old man with a bat. The 52-year-old suspect threw a wooden board at the 74-year-old.

Police did not report how seriously the men were injured or if they were transported for treatment. There is also no report of an arrest in the case that remains under investigation.

Officers arrested her on requested charges of burglary of a non-dwelling, criminal damage to property, and theft of property. Officers also recovered the stolen property.

Police catch Kansas woman breaking into cars

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement authorities continue their investigation of multiple separate murders in Kansas City on Tuesday and have made one arrest.

On Thursday, as a result of police investigation, officers served a search warrant, arrested and charged a suspect in the murder of 15-year old Terrell Bell.&nbsp;

Detectives haven’t let up on their work in any of these cases, according to a social media report from KCPD.

Around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the 3500 block of Independence Avenue on a shooting. They found 52-year-old Jose Lugo suffering from gunshot wounds. An ambulance transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.&nbsp;&nbsp;The suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction.

Half an hour later at about 2 p.m.,&nbsp;officers went to 52nd and Euclid for a shooting. When they got there, the officers found one man suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds. That victim was transported to a local hospital by ambulance. Another victim from the shooting scene arrived at the hospital by private transport with critical injuries. About three hours after the initial shooting, the victim with critical injuries was pronounced deceased at the hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;He has been identified as 30-year-old Lavance Jones.&nbsp;There is no suspect information at this time.

Then at 2:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of 108th and Sycamore, where they found a 15-year-old boy who had been shot. Officers attempted life-saving measures before the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The victim has been identified as Terrell Bell, 15.

Meanwhile, police are also are investigating after 15-year-old Kaden Bauswell was killed Tuesday in a shooting near an elementary school. Police are urging anyone with information about that shooting to call a tips hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS.&nbsp;&nbsp;There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest in these cases through the TIPS Hotline.

An ambulance transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.&nbsp;&nbsp;The suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction.Half an hour later at about 2 p.m.,&nbsp;officers went to 52nd and Euclid for a shooting. When they got there, the officers found one man suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds. That victim was transported to a local hospital by ambulance. Another victim from the shooting scene arrived at the hospital by private transport with critical injuries. About three hours after the initial shooting, the victim with critical injuries was pronounced deceased at the hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;He has been identified as 30-year-old Lavance Jones.&nbsp;There is no suspect information at this time.Then at 2:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of 108th and Sycamore, where they found a 15-year-old boy who had been shot. Officers attempted life-saving measures before the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The victim has been identified as Terrell Bell, 15.Meanwhile, police are also are investigating after 15-year-old Kaden Bauswell was killed Tuesday in a shooting near an elementary school. Police are urging anyone with information about that shooting to call a tips hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS.&nbsp;&nbsp;There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest in these cases through the TIPS Hotline.

Police make one arrest in series of murders in Kansas City

On Tuesday, the Osage County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU) took into custody a suspect identified as 39-year-old Mark E. Davenport of Topeka who had made plans to meet with someone he believed to be a minor, according to Sheriff Chris Wells.

Davenport is being held on requested charges of aggravated human trafficking, commercial sexual exploitation of a child, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sheriff: Kansas man expected to meet minor for sex

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A former Wichita teacher and city council candidate has pleaded guilty to having a sexual relationship with a student. Rodney Wren pleaded guilty Wednesday to one of three counts of unlawful sexual relations. 

He admitted having sex with an underage girl in 2015 and 2016 while he worked at Wichita Collegiate School. He was fired from the school when he was arrested in February 2020. Wren was a longtime teacher and debate coach at Wichita Collegiate. He ran unsuccessfully for  the District 2 Wichita City Council seat in 2019. His attorney said Wren's actions were wrong, but he said Wren was not a pedophile.

SEDGWICK COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas teacher for alleged sex crimes.

In January, police in Wichita were notified of possible sexual relations occurring between a teacher at Wichita Collegiate identified as 39-year-old Rodney Wren and a former student at Wichita Collegiate who was a teen at the time of the alleged relationship, according to officer Charley Davidson.

On Feb. 7, following the police investigation, officers arrested Wren&nbsp; for three counts of unlawful sexual relations.&nbsp;

Wichita Collegiate Officials are cooperating with the investigation and had placed Wren on administrative leave.

The case has been presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Former Kansas teacher pleads guilty to sex with student

Just after 4:30p.m. Tuesday, a K9 Unit with the Shawnee County Sheriff's Department conducted a traffic stop on a white 1994 Ford Explorer in the 5800 block of SW Topeka Boulevard, according to Deputy Abigail Christian. During the investigation, the K9 was deployed and illegal narcotics were located.&nbsp;

Deputies arrested the driver Robert J. Wehner Jr.,50 of Silver Lake and the passenger Shannon K. Woehr, 51, of Overbrook.

Later that day, the same K9 Unit conducted a traffic stop on a spray painted 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier near NW Topeka Boulevard and NW Paramore Street. During the investigation, the K9 was deployed and illegal narcotics were located. Deputies arrested the driver, Christopher D. Kittle, 35, of Topeka.

Wehner, Woehr and Kittle were booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.&nbsp; Wehner is being held on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to have vehicle liability insurance, tag not assigned, operating a vehicle without registration and a bench warrant out of the City of Topeka, according to Christian.

Woehr is being held on a requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and multiple warrants. Kittle is facing possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended driver’s license and possession of marijuana.

Kansas sheriff's K9 unit helps with 3 arrests in 2 traffic stops

MANHATTAN —A Junction City man arrested June 4 on child sex crime allegations is facing additional accusations.&nbsp;

Police arrested 31-year-old Aaron Zachry late Wednesday afternoon on three additional counts of sexual exploitation of a child while still confined in the Riley County Jail, according to Riley County Police Department spokesperson Aaron Wintermote.

 These charges came after further information was collected during the ongoing investigation into Zachry. The circumstances behind these additional charges are believed to have occurred on March 13, 2021, at a residence in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Zachry was issued a bond of $300,000 for these additional charges, resulting in a total bond of $360,000. The bond for his initial arrest on June 4 is $60,000. Zachry remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.

Zachry's initial arrest on June 4, at the Northview P ark Pool in Manhattan was for one count of sexual exploitation of a child after nude photographs of minors were found on his cell phone.

Zachry was employed as a paraeducator at Northview Elementary in Manhatta.&nbsp; Police are asking parents or anyone with additional information to please contact RCPD at (785) 537-2112 or Crime Stoppers at (785) 539-7777. Junction City sex crime suspect facing additional charges

GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) — DNA evidence preserved after a 1956 double homicide and the use of forensic genealogy has helped a Montana sheriff’s office close the books on the 65-year-old cold case, officials said.

Investigators with the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office concluded Kenneth Gould — who died in Oregon County, Missouri, in 2007 — more than likely killed Patricia Kalitzke, 16, and Duane Bogle, 18. Both were shot in the head.

Detective Sgt. Jon Kadner, who took over the case in 2012, said Tuesday it was the oldest case he could find nationwide that has been solved using forensic genealogy, which searches commercial DNA databases to find familial matches to the DNA of a crime suspect.

On Jan. 3, 1956, three boys hiking along the Sun River near Wadsworth Park northwest of Great Falls found Bogle dead near his car. A day later, a county road worker found Kalitzke’s body north of Great Falls.

Kalitzke was a junior at Great Falls High School, and Bogle was an airman at Malmstrom Air Force Base from Waco, Texas.

Officers investigated for years, but they were unable to make an arrest.

The case went cold for decades until 2001, when then-Detective Phil Matteson sent the slide of a vaginal swab gathered from Kalitzke’s body to the Montana State Crime Lab for analysis. The lab found a sperm cell that did not belong to Bogle, officers said.

In the following years, law enforcement compared the DNA sample to about 35 other men, including gangster James Joseph “Whitey” Bulger Jr. They were all ruled out as suspects.

The new method has led to the identification of dozens of suspects in cold cases.In 2019, Cascade County detectives had Bode Technology perform additional DNA testing on the evidence found on Kalitzke’s body. It was uploaded to voluntary genealogical databases, where they discovered a possible family connection — leading investigators to Gould.Kadner had to reach out to Gould’s children and ask for DNA samples to verify the match.“I wasn’t sure how they were going to react when I come to them saying, ‘Hey your dad’s a suspect in this case,’ but they were great to work with,” Kadner said.Gould’s family home at the time of the homicides was a little over a mile&nbsp; from where Kalitzke lived. He was known to ride horses through the area, officials said.After the murders, Gould sold his property near the town of Tracy. His family lived in the Montana communities of Geraldine and Hamilton before moving to Missouri in 1967. They did not return to Montana.Gould did not have a known criminal history and was not interviewed during the murder investigation. Investigators did not find any connections between Gould and the victims.Officers kept working the case because of the circumstances, Kadner said.“You had two young, vibrant individuals that were well-liked among their peer group,” he said. “Investigators poured their heart and soul into this case. They leave a little bit of themselves, from what I’ve seen.”
