SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after a standoff with police.

Just after 2:30 a.m. Dec. 11, police responded to a domestic violence disturbance with a weapon at a residence in the 10900 block of West Harvest Lane in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Upon arrival, officers contacted the family of 29-year-old Courtland Gire outside of the residence.&nbsp; They reported that Gire was threatening family and his 29-year-old girlfriend with a handgun and knife and that he was holding his girlfriend in a bedroom against her will.&nbsp; Gire also reportedly threatened to shoot responding officers.

The situation was resolved peacefully after approximately four hours through the use of Wichita Police Department's crisis negotiators and mental health advisor who were on the scene.&nbsp; 

Gire exited the home and was arrested without the use of force.&nbsp; No one was injured in this incident.&nbsp; Officers also recovered a handgun and knife during the investigation.

Gire remains jailed on requested charges of aggravated assault domestic violence, one count of felon in possession of a firearm and one count of aggravated weapons violation.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.&nbsp; Gire has over a dozen previous burglary and theft convictions, had been convicted on multiple other felony charges and was dismissed from custody in October, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Kan. man with over a dozen convictions jailed after standoff 

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating one of two suspicious deaths in Topeka have made an arrest in one case on Sunday.

Just after 5:00 a.m., Sunday, police responded to a call for service in the 1400 block of SW Van Buren in Topeka after the report of a deceased man, according to Lt. Shane Hilton. Officers found a man later identified as 73-year-old Charles Jackson of Topeka. He was pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp;

 As a result of the ongoing investigation, police arrested Jennifer Jackson, 50, of Topeka booked her into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Murder in the 1st degree, according to Hilton.

Kansas woman accused of murder in man's death

TOPEKA, KAN. – A Kansas man was indicted in federal court this with distributing heroin, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.

James Licht, 39, Topeka, was charged with one count of distributing heroin and one count of unlawful possession of firearms by a previously convicted felon.

According to documents filed in court, in October investigators served a search warrant at Licht’s residence in the 1400 block of SW 5th&nbsp;Street in Topeka. Among the items seized were heroin, more than $1,500 in cash, a .45 caliber pistol, a 9 mm pistol, other firearms and drug paraphernalia.

Licht was paying $1,500 to $2,000 an ounce to buy 1 to 2 ounces of heroin each week.

&nbsp;Licht was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a felony conviction in 2019 in Shawnee County District Court.

If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $1 million on the heroin charge and up to 10 years and a fine up to $250,000 on the firearm charge. The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Kansas Highway Patrol investigated.&nbsp;

Indictment: Kan. man paid $1500 a week for ounce of heroin

SALINA —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on numerous charges after he stabbed a police officer in Salina.

Just after midnight Sunday, a Salina officer was attempting to make an arrest in the 2100 block of Meadowlark when a physical confrontation ensued, according to a social media report from police.

The suspect stabbed the officer his torso with a knife and attempted to flee but was apprehended.  

Police arrested Miguel Alberto Tostado on requested charges of Aggravated Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer and other felony charges. He is being held in Saline County Jail.

The officer was transported to Salina Regional Hospital where he was treated, released and is expected to make a full recovery.

Police are expected to release additional details Monday.

Just before 10:30p.m. Friday, police responded to a report of a possible shooting in the 3800 block of SW Topeka Boulevard, according to Lt. John Trimble.

At the scene, police found a victim with life-threatening injuries. It is unclear at this point what caused the injuries, but that victim died on scene shortly after officers arrived.

Police brought several individuals to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning.

Police investigate 2 suspicious deaths in Topeka

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged child abuse.

On December 8, 2020, deputies responded to a child abuse call after a three-year-old child arrived at a local hospital with several serious internal and external injuries, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The child was transported to a Kansas City area hospital for treatment.

Just after 9:30p.m. Thursday, deputies located and arrested Joshua S. McNutt, 41, of Topeka. McNutt was transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of felony aggravated endangering a child.

Police arrest Kan. man after 3-year-old hospitalized

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — It's not unusual for officers to pull over suspected drunken drivers on the highways of Kansas. But it is fairly rare to bust a suspected drunken driver while he's driving a riding lawnmower. 

That's what Shawnee County Sheriff's deputies say they encountered Wednesday afternoon when they spotted a man later identified as 25-year-old Dalton D. Hunt, according to arrest records, driving a lawnmower on the southbound shoulder of U.S. Highway 75 near Topeka. 

Deputies stopped and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence after he failed a field sobriety test.

Deputies arrest man riding lawnmower on Kansas highway

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man recently released from prison on new charges after an arrest.

Just before 3a.m. Friday, deputies responding to a report of someone trying to get into a rural Saline County residence when they received a call of another burglary in Assaria, according to Sheriff Roger Soldan.

A homeowner in the 300 block of East Kansas Street heard a noise in his garage. When the homeowner checked, he found Michael Sledd, 29, of Assaria, going through his vehicle.

The homeowner kept Sledd in the garage until deputies arrived, he added.

When deputies arrived, Sledd moved as if he was going to run, but the homeowner pushed him back, according to Soldan .

The pushed prompted a fight, during which, a deputy sprained a thumb. The fight ended when deputies used a Taser on Sledd.

Sledd appeared to be under the influence of drugs and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) for observation, according to Soldan.

After treatment, he will be taken to the Saline County Jail and booked on requested charges that include Aggravated burglary, Battery of a law enforcement officer and Criminal trespass

The Seward County Attorney's office is considering potential charges in the case, according to the release.&nbsp; Authorities released no additional details.

Year-long rape investigation leads to SW Kansas arrest

RENO COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on child sex charges after conducting an undercover operation into the solicitation of a child for sex.

Just after 3 p.m. Thursday, members of the Hutchinson Police Department Special Operations and Investigations Bureau completed an investigation into a Juvenile Sex Offense, according to a media release from Hutchinson Police.

The suspect Randy J. Wheeler, 33, Hutchinson, believed he was going to meet a minor for a sexual encounter, but instead met Hutchinson police officers.

They arrested Wheeler on requested charges of Indecent Solicitation of a child, Sexual Exploitation of a child, Electronic Solicitation, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and  Felony Interference with Law Enforcement.

Marco Carrillo Fuentes, 31, Wichita, was charged with second-degree murder, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney.

On November 30, police responded to a stabbing at a residence in the 1000 block of South Richmond in Wichita, according to officer Paul Cruz. 

Upon arrival, officers located 32-year-old Rickey Mason, who had been stabbed in the chest and later died of his injuries.

The investigation revealed a disturbance occurred between Mason and a Carrillo Fuentes over property. During the disturbance the Carrillo-Fuentes produced a knife and stabbed Mason.

On Tuesday police arrested him after an 8 day search. He is being held on a $500,000 bond in the Sedgwick County Jail. He is scheduled to return to court December 17, according to the district attorney's office.

Just before 4:00 p.m., Sunday, police responded to a stabbing at a residence in the 1000 block of South Richmond in Wichita, according to officer Paul Cruz. 

The investigation revealed a disturbance occurred between Mason and a suspect identified as Marco Carrillo Fuentes, 31, Wichita over property. During the disturbance the Carrillo-Fuentes produced a knife and stabbed Mason.

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office has charged Carrillo-Fuentes with 2nd Degree murder in the stabbing death.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Carrillo-Fuentes is asked to call 911.&nbsp;

Kansas felon arrested for stabbing, charged with murder 

SEWARD COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a sexual assault and have made an arrest.

On Wednesday, police responded to a residence in Liberal after a report involving the sexual assault of a 7-year-old girl while at her baby sitter's home, according to a media release.

Police arrested a 51-year-old man in the 200 Block of West Spruce. He is being held in the Seward County Jail on requested charges of rape of a child under the age of 14.

Authorities released no additional details.

Police: Child sex assault at baby sitter's SW Kan. home

SHAWNEE, Kan. (AP) — The perjury charge filed against the mayor of Shawnee, Kansas, stems from an open meetings complaint she allegedly filed using the name of another person without his permission, a court document shows.

The investigation into Michelle Distler was opened on March 10 after a local government “watchdog” informed Shawnee police that he had received an email from the state attorney general’s office confirming receipt of his online complaint filed under the Kansas Open Meetings Act, according to the probable cause affidavit released Tuesday.

The so-called watchdog, whose name was redacted in the court document, told police he had not submitted the open records complaint and if someone used his information to file one it was done without his authorization.

An investigator with the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office subsequently obtained the IP address associated with the open records complaint and traced it to Distler.

That complaint, which claimed an open records violation over an email chain involving four City Council members and another person, includes a section on the online form declaring under penalty of perjury that the information provided is true and correct.

Police searched her home in June and seized several electronic devices, including an iPad she told investigators was involved in the incident, according to the affidavit.

Distler, 47, was released last week on a $2,500 bond following her arrest. Her first court appearance is set for Jan. 5. Her attorney, Robin Fowler, did not immediately respond to a request Wednesday seeking comment.

Distler told the investigator that she attempted to file the open records complaint online anonymously and had listed the government watchdog’s information so he would get a copy of it as well, but claimed she received an error message when she tried to do so, according to the affidavit.

The mayor said she deleted the anonymous part and kept the other information then left to run errands without clicking submit on her iPad. She later realized that the complaint had been inadvertently sent and contacted the Shawnee City Attorney Ellis Rainey to seek his advice.

According to the affidavit, Distler stated that “I don’t know how it got sent, but it’s my fault. I’m fully responsible for it getting sent.”

The probable cause affidavit also alleges discrepancies with the account Distler gave the investigator when she was questioned about the timing and other details related to filing of the open records complaint.

(AP) — The perjury charge filed against the mayor of Shawnee, Kansas, stems from an open meetings complaint she allegedly filed using the name of another person without his permission, a court document shows.The investigation into Michelle Distler was opened on March 10 after a local government “watchdog” informed Shawnee police that he had received an email from the state attorney general’s office confirming receipt of his online complaint filed under the Kansas Open Meetings Act, according to the probable cause affidavit released Tuesday.The so-called watchdog, whose name was redacted in the court document, told police he had not submitted the open records complaint and if someone used his information to file one it was done without his authorization.An investigator with the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office subsequently obtained the IP address associated with the open records complaint and traced it to Distler.That complaint, which claimed an open records violation over an email chain involving four City Council members and another person, includes a section on the online form declaring under penalty of perjury that the information provided is true and correct.Police searched her home in June and seized several electronic devices, including an iPad she told investigators was involved in the incident, according to the affidavit.Distler, 47, was released last week on a $2,500 bond following her arrest. Her first court appearance is set for Jan. 5. Her attorney, Robin Fowler, did not immediately respond to a request Wednesday seeking comment.Distler told the investigator that she attempted to file the open records complaint online anonymously and had listed the government watchdog’s information so he would get a copy of it as well, but claimed she received an error message when she tried to do so, according to the affidavit.The mayor said she deleted the anonymous part and kept the other information then left to run errands without clicking submit on her iPad. She later realized that the complaint had been inadvertently sent and contacted the Shawnee City Attorney Ellis Rainey to seek his advice.According to the affidavit, Distler stated that “I don’t know how it got sent, but it’s my fault. I’m fully responsible for it getting sent.”The probable cause affidavit also alleges discrepancies with the account Distler gave the investigator when she was questioned about the timing and other details related to filing of the open records complaint.

Police ID victim in fatal shooting at Kansas home

WICHITA, KAN. – A Kansas was charged in federal court here Wednesday with sexually exploiting a 15-year-old victim, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.

&nbsp;Loren Olson, 68, Marquette, Kan., is charged with one count of producing child pornography and one count of the sex trafficking of a minor.

A criminal complaint filed in federal court in Wichita alleges Olson came to the attention of law enforcement after Facebook made a CyberTipline report to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Facebook captured content in which Olson communicated with a 15-year-old victim. Olson made reference to having had sex with the victim, taking pictures during their sexual acts and paying the victim after sex.

&nbsp;If convicted, Olson could face a penalty of not less than 15 years and not more than 30 years in federal prison on the production count, and not less than 10 years on the other count. The FBI investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hart is prosecuting.

Facebook tip leads to Kan. man's child sex crime arrest

RENO COUNTY— Authorities in Reno County have charges against a Kansas woman in connection with Dec. 5, fatality accident.

According to the Reno County District Attorney, Viola Rhodes, 31, Hutchinson, is charged with involuntary manslaughter, seven counts of aggravated battery while under the influence, DUI and illegal transportation of liquor.&nbsp;

According to the Reno County Sheriff, Rhodes was driving an SUV in the 3400 Block of South Yoder Road Saturday evening when she lost control of her vehicle and rolled it. 

Seven passengers&nbsp; in the vehicle were injured. One later died at the hospital.

If convicted, Rhodes could face more than five years in prison on the manslaughter charge due to a previous arrest for DUI that is currently under diversion. &nbsp;Each count of aggravated battery carries a maximum of two years in prison, according to the district attorney.

Rhodes asked for a reduction in her bond which was denied by the court. She remains jailed on bond of $200,000. Her next court appearance is set for January 13.

Kan. woman charged in fatal SUV rollover accident

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman in connection with alleged child endangerment in Great Bend.

Just before noon Tuesday, deputies were at a home at 1212 Baker in Great Bend attempting to contact 36-year-old Audra Cross in reference to harboring a runaway case they were investigating, according to a media release.

Deputies were unable to make contact with anyone inside the residence. While on scene, another juvenile who had been reported as a runaway through the Great Bend Police Department, called his mother on the phone. The juvenile told his mother he was in the house and the police were outside. The mother of the juvenile contacted the Police Department and stated she was told by the juvenile he had a firearm and would use it. Officers with the Great Bend Police Department responded to assist.

Deputies were able to contact Cross over the phone and got her to come out of the residence. She advised law enforcement that Horacio Carrasco-Olivias, age 21, was also inside the residence. Carrasco-Olivias eventually exited the residence. Cross along with Carrasco-Olivias stated there was no one else inside the residence. Cross and Carrasco-Olivias were interviewed and left the area.

Officers were able to make contact by phone with the juvenile, who later came out of the residence. Officers learned the juvenile had been staying at the residence for several nights.

A short time later, deputies located Cross and Carrasco-Olivias in the area. Cross and Carrasco-Olivias were arrested for contributing to a child's misconduct. A search warrant was later obtained for the residence. Items belonging to the juvenile were located inside the residence.

Kansas woman arrested after standoff in Great Bend

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a series of armed robberies and have a third suspect in custody.

Just before 9p.m. Dec. 3, police responded to an armed robbery call at the Jumpstart, 3805 W. 21st&nbsp;Street North in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Upon arrival, officers contacted a store employee who reported two suspects entering the store and demanding cash while one suspect was armed with a rifle.

Cash was taken by the suspects, who then fled the store on foot.&nbsp; No one was injured.

Through the investigation of the Jumpstart robbery, investigators learned that Johnny Washington, 28; Antonio Martin, 26, and Cameron Burns, 28, were involved.&nbsp;

Police arrested Martin and Burns last week. On Monday police arrested Washington in Derby with the assistance of the Derby Police Department, according to Davidson.

Through further investigation, investigators learned Washington was involved in four additional armed robberies.

Washington is being held on requested charges that include five counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated assault, stemming from robbery investigations beginning in July.&nbsp; &nbsp;Washington is also accused of aggravated battery domestic violence (DV) strangulation regarding an ongoing DV investigation and outstanding warrants.

Kan. man jailed for 5 armed robberies over 6-months

MANHATTAN – Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged case of child sexual assault in Manhattan and have made a third arrest arrest.

On November 24, officers filed a report for rape and aggravated criminal sodomy in Manhattan involving a 12-year-old girl as the victim and a 20-year-old male known to her as the suspect, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Just after 11a.m. Tuesday, police arrested Brian Griffith, 20, of Ft. Riley in connection with the crime on requested charges c of rape and aggravated criminal sodomy. Griffith was issued a total bond of $250,000.00 and is confined in the Riley County Jail.

On Dec. 4,&nbsp;police arrested Zelond Benymon, 19, of Ft. Riley in connection with the case on requested charges that included 3 counts of rape and two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy.

On Nov. 30, police arrested Tavian Garrett, 23, of Manhattan in connection with the investigation on on requested charges that include five counts of rape and five counts of aggravated criminal sodomy.&nbsp;

On Monday, police arrested 33-year-old Rashonda Mendez and booked her into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of burglary and arson, according to Harrison.

Kansas woman accused of burglary, setting car on fire

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug charges following a weekend arrest.

Just after 6:3 a.m. Sunday a police officer&nbsp; investigated a suspicious vehicle parked in the 200 block of East 2nd Street in Ellinwood, according to a media release.

As the officer approached the vehicle, he found two occupants hiding inside. While the officer questioned the occupants, he observed drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

The occupants were detained and the vehicle searched. Investigators found over $3,000 in cash, three handguns, marijuana, methamphetamine and various prescription medications and paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Officers arrested Sonia Alejandra Candia, 20 of Pratt and Brandon Lee Gross, 24 of Great Bend, were and transported them to the Barton County Jail.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an armed robbery and have made two arrests.

A store employee told police two suspects entering the store and demanding cash while one suspect was armed with a rifle.

Through the investigation of the Jumpstart robbery, investigators learned of the involvement of two suspects.&nbsp; Police arrested 26-year-old Antonio D. Martin and 28-year-old Carmen Burns both of Wichita on Friday evening.&nbsp;

Investigators learned Martin was involved in four additional armed robberies that began in July and that Burns was involved in a second armed robbery as well.&nbsp; The two long guns were recovered and determined to be bb guns, according to Davidson.

Martin is being held on requested charges of five counts of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, and outstanding warrants and Burns on requested charges of two counts of aggravated robbery.
