SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a case of alleged arson and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 1:30a.m. Dec. 6, fire crews responded to a vehicle fire at 522 SW 6th Avenue in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke and flames coming from a passenger car.

A Preliminary investigation indicates the fire was intentionally set. The estimated dollar loss is $1,200.00; all of which is associated with the loss of the vehicle, according to Harrison.&nbsp;

On Monday, police arrested 33-year-old Rashonda Mendez and booked her into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of burglary and arson, according to Harrison.

Kansas woman accused of burglary, setting car on fire

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug charges following a weekend arrest.

Police find 2 Kan. drug suspects hiding in vehicle

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an armed robbery and have made two arrests.

Just before 9p.m. Dec. 3, police responded to an armed robbery call at the Jumpstart, 3805 W. 21st&nbsp;Street North in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

A store employee told police two suspects entering the store and demanding cash while one suspect was armed with a rifle.

Cash was taken by the suspects, who then fled the store on foot.&nbsp; No one was injured.

Through the investigation of the Jumpstart robbery, investigators learned of the involvement of two suspects.&nbsp; Police arrested 26-year-old Antonio D. Martin and 28-year-old Carmen Burns both of Wichita on Friday evening.&nbsp;

Investigators learned Martin was involved in four additional armed robberies that began in July and that Burns was involved in a second armed robbery as well.&nbsp; The two long guns were recovered and determined to be bb guns, according to Davidson.

Martin is being held on requested charges of five counts of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, and outstanding warrants and Burns on requested charges of two counts of aggravated robbery.

Police arrest 2 Kan. men for series of armed robberies 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A judge rejected a request for lower bond from a 31-year-old Hutchinson woman who was driving when her car rolled, killing one of seven passengers. Viola Rhodes was arrested after the vehicle crashed Saturday night near Hutchinson. 

One of the passengers, 44-year-old Brian Bookout, was thrown from the vehicle and died of his injuries. During a bond hearing Monday, Rhodes asked for a lower bond, but Reno County Magistrate Judge Daniel Gilligan rejected that request and set bond at $200,000. 

Rhodes was arrested on several possible charges, including involuntary manslaughter and drunken driving. She will be formally charged during a hearing next Monday.

RENO COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal accident in Reno County and have made an arrest.

Just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday, deputies were sent to 3419 South Yoder Road for a rollover accident, according to a social media report from the Reno County Sheriff.

At the scene, deputies found a silver SUV on its top in the pasture. Eight people were inside. A 44-year-old man was ejected, a 31-year-old woman had injuries to her face, a 45-year-old man reported injuries to his face and hands, a 25-year-old man reported injuries to his shoulders and legs, a 23-year-old woman reported an injury to her left leg, a 39-year-old man reported an abrasion of his right upper arm and a 42-year-old man reported a head injury. All eight people were from Hutchinson. Two passengers were taken to Hutchinson Regional. One of them succumbed to their injuries.

Deputies arrested the driver Viola Rhodes, 31, of Hutchinson on requested charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcoholic beverage, aggravated battery; DUI, and involuntary homicide.

The sheriff did not release names of the victims.

Update: 1 dead,  Kan. woman arrested after SUV crash

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged domestic battery in Manhattan.

Just after 12:30a.m. Saturday, officers filed a report for domestic battery and criminal damage to property in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Officers listed a 23-year-old man as the victim and a 22-year-old woman known to him as the suspect. She allegedly used an $800 Hisense television to batter him.&nbsp;

Police have not reported an arrest or released additional details.

RCPD: Woman allegedly battered man with $800 TV

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a rollover accident and asking the public for help locating a driver who fled the scene.

Just before 10p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to report of a rollover accident in the 100 block of NE. 10th Road in rural Barton County, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

They discovered a 1998 Buick Park Avenue was not occupied and later located victims of the accident at the hospital in Great Bend. 

Five juveniles were involved in the collision. Three were 14 years of age, one 15 years old and one 17-year-old. At least one sustained serious spinal injuries. Another juvenile sustained injuries requiring medical attention.

Investigators learned the vehicle was operated by Adan Hernandez Jr., 22 of Great Bend. Hernandez lost control of the vehicle. It slid into the east ditch and rolled.

Sheriff asks for help to locate driver who fled Kan. rollover crash

WICHITA, KAN.&nbsp;– A Kansas man was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in federal prison for methamphetamine trafficking, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.

Danny Del Real, 31, Dodge City, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of distributing methamphetamine.

In October 2018, a confidential informant working with the Dodge City Police Department paid Del Real $5,000 to purchase approximately a pound of methamphetamine. When tested, the package contained the equivalent of about eight-tenths of a pound of pure methamphetamine.

Confidential informant led to Kansas man's drug arrest

KANSAS CITY, KAN.&nbsp;– A man with a prior child sexual exploitation conviction was sentenced today to 12 years in federal prison for possessing child pornography, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister. In addition, the defendant was ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution.

William Lockwood, 41, who lived in Kansas City, Kan., at the time of the crime and now lives in Pleasant Valley, Mo., pleaded guilty to one count of possessing child pornography. The investigation began when Dropbox sent a tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. 

In his plea, Lockwood admitted he uploaded child pornography to the Dropbox account and provided access to other users.

Investigators seized 26 videos of child sexual abuse from Lockwood’s account. In 2012, Lockwood was convicted in Collier County, Fla., on a charge of obscene communication for the purpose of luring a child for sex.

Tip leads to sex offender's arrest in Kansas, prison sentence

MONTGOMERY COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating an altercation that sent a suspect to the hospital and then to jail.

Just before 9a.m. Thursday, police&nbsp; were dispatched to a disturbance call in the 200 block of North Spring Street in Caney, Kansas, according to a media release.

At the scene, officers discovered one man&nbsp; who was heavily intoxicated and suffering from head injuries he sustained during an altercation in the home. 

The suspect was identified as Terry Mitchell, 65, Copan Oklahoma. 

There was a female victim in the home, who had been assaulted by Mitchell during an argument.  At some point during the altercation the victim defended herself by striking Mitchell in the head with a glass vase, resulting in injuries to Mitchell.

Officers arrested Mitchell for Battery, Disorderly Conduct, and Interference with a Law Enforcement Officer.

Mitchell remained combative and was taken to Labette Health in Independence Kan. for evaluation prior to being taken to jail.  Independence P.D. assisted at the hospital with controlling Mitchell until he was placed in the County Jail.

April Lunsford, 39, Paola, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. The case began when the Kansas Bureau of Investigation started looking into a trafficking organization that was distributing methamphetamine in the Kansas City, Kan., area. Lunsford sold methamphetamine four times to buyers working undercover for law enforcement.

During the investigation, Lunsford was arrested and charged in Miami County District Court in connection with the death of 23-year-old Heather Briggs. Lunsford pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 98 months in state prison.

Kansas woman sentenced for drug deal death

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an armed robbery and have made an arrest.

Just after 5p.m. Thursday, police&nbsp;responded to a report of a robbery of a pizza delivery driver, according to Lt. Ron Ekis.

The 32-year-old male delivery driver reported he attempted to deliver pizza to an address in the 600 block of SE Lake in Topeka when an adult male suspect armed with a gun robbed him of food. 

Police were able to locate the suspect identified as&nbsp;28-year-old Simeon D. Perdue and take him into custody without incident.

Perdue was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of aggravated robbery.

Kan. man took pizza at gunpoint from delivery driver 

KANSAS CITY – Nineteen defendants, primarily from the&nbsp; Kansas City and Columbia, Missouri areas have been indicted by a federal grand jury for their roles in a $1.2 million insurance fraud conspiracy that involved false claims of injuries suffered in car accidents, according to the United State Attorney's office.

Lawrence Courtney Lawhorn, 32, and Latoya Marie Brown, 35, who resided in Columbia and in the Kansas City area; Lauren Courtney Luque, 34, Michael Jadon Carter, 30, Tiera Rachell Wallace, 38, Lanay Deshawn Wallace, 26, Dylan James Danielsson, 26, Larell Montez Banks, 27, Kathy Davvy Kimhang, 29, Michael Lee Gene Stapleton, 34, and Cedrick Shawndale Goldman, 44, all of Columbia; Matthew Stephen Akins, 32, who resided in Columbia and Fulton, Mo.; Michael Stuart Smith, 34, Taron Donte Ford, 35, Dontay Laray Campbell, 31, and Eriona Tyjaez Fleeks, 28, all of Kansas City, Mo.; Cornelius Deshawn Phelps, 35, who resided in Kansas City and Lee’s Summit, Mo.; Tara Colleen Jackson, 57, of Independence, Mo.; and Maurice Frank Penny, 37, of St. Louis, Mo., were charged in a 69-count superseding indictment returned under seal by a federal grand jury in Springfield, Mo., on Nov. 18, 2020.&nbsp;

The superseding indictment was unsealed and made public Wednesday upon the arrests and initial court appearances of several defendants. The superseding indictment replaces an indictment returned on Aug. 19, 2020, which originally charged only Lawhorn and Luque with eight counts related to the fraud conspiracy.

The federal indictment charges all 19 defendants with participating in a conspiracy that defrauded six insurance companies of a total of $1,234,581 from June 2017 to July 2020. Conspirators allegedly submitted false claims that they had suffered bodily injuries and that they would be personally liable for any medical bills related to insurance claims. 

Conspirators, some of whom were involved in multiple incidents, received thousands of dollars, and in some cases tens of thousands of dollars, based on these false claims. According to the indictment, however, none of the conspirators made any payments to medical providers and instead used the funds for their personal expenses.

Lawhorn was directly involved in two incidents in which he received separate payments of $1,500 and $17,350 from insurance companies, the indictment says. In eight additional incidents, Lawhorn allegedly sent emails to insurance companies, made telephone calls to insurance companies, directed others what to tell insurance companies, reviewed insurance policies prior to incidents, witnessed release agreements, and assumed the identity of parties to the incidents or people related to parties to these incidents in communication with insurance companies.

Luque (with whom Lawhorn was in a romantic relationship), Jackson (who is Lawhorn’s mother), Carter, Banks, and Stapleton each received fraudulent insurance payments of $50,000 or more, according to the indictment. Lawhorn also was in romantic relationships with Kimhang and Brown, who has a child in common with Lawhorn. Brown was involved in three incidents, the indictment says, and received a total of $44,269 in insurance payments. Kimhang received a fraudulent insurance payment of $18,429, according to the indictment.

In addition to the wire fraud conspiracy, most of the defendants are charged with participating in a mail fraud conspiracy. Lawhorn and Carter are also charged together in a money-laundering conspiracy. The indictment also charges various defendants in 38 counts of wire fraud, six counts of attempted wire fraud, and 20 counts of mail fraud. Lawhorn is also charged with one count of aggravated identity theft. Lawhorn and Luque are also charged together in one count of aggravated identity theft.

KANSAS CITY – Nineteen defendants, primarily from the&nbsp; Kansas City and Columbia, Missouri areas have been indicted by a federal grand jury for their roles in a $1.2 million insurance fraud conspiracy that involved false claims of injuries suffered in car accidents, according to the United State Attorney's office.Lawrence Courtney Lawhorn, 32, and Latoya Marie Brown, 35, who resided in Columbia and in the Kansas City area; Lauren Courtney Luque, 34, Michael Jadon Carter, 30, Tiera Rachell Wallace, 38, Lanay Deshawn Wallace, 26, Dylan James Danielsson, 26, Larell Montez Banks, 27, Kathy Davvy Kimhang, 29, Michael Lee Gene Stapleton, 34, and Cedrick Shawndale Goldman, 44, all of Columbia; Matthew Stephen Akins, 32, who resided in Columbia and Fulton, Mo.; Michael Stuart Smith, 34, Taron Donte Ford, 35, Dontay Laray Campbell, 31, and Eriona Tyjaez Fleeks, 28, all of Kansas City, Mo.; Cornelius Deshawn Phelps, 35, who resided in Kansas City and Lee’s Summit, Mo.; Tara Colleen Jackson, 57, of Independence, Mo.; and Maurice Frank Penny, 37, of St. Louis, Mo., were charged in a 69-count superseding indictment returned under seal by a federal grand jury in Springfield, Mo., on Nov. 18, 2020.&nbsp;The superseding indictment was unsealed and made public Wednesday upon the arrests and initial court appearances of several defendants. The superseding indictment replaces an indictment returned on Aug. 19, 2020, which originally charged only Lawhorn and Luque with eight counts related to the fraud conspiracy.The federal indictment charges all 19 defendants with participating in a conspiracy that defrauded six insurance companies of a total of $1,234,581 from June 2017 to July 2020. Conspirators allegedly submitted false claims that they had suffered bodily injuries and that they would be personally liable for any medical bills related to insurance claims. Conspirators, some of whom were involved in multiple incidents, received thousands of dollars, and in some cases tens of thousands of dollars, based on these false claims. According to the indictment, however, none of the conspirators made any payments to medical providers and instead used the funds for their personal expenses.Lawhorn was directly involved in two incidents in which he received separate payments of $1,500 and $17,350 from insurance companies, the indictment says. In eight additional incidents, Lawhorn allegedly sent emails to insurance companies, made telephone calls to insurance companies, directed others what to tell insurance companies, reviewed insurance policies prior to incidents, witnessed release agreements, and assumed the identity of parties to the incidents or people related to parties to these incidents in communication with insurance companies.Luque (with whom Lawhorn was in a romantic relationship), Jackson (who is Lawhorn’s mother), Carter, Banks, and Stapleton each received fraudulent insurance payments of $50,000 or more, according to the indictment. Lawhorn also was in romantic relationships with Kimhang and Brown, who has a child in common with Lawhorn. Brown was involved in three incidents, the indictment says, and received a total of $44,269 in insurance payments. Kimhang received a fraudulent insurance payment of $18,429, according to the indictment.In addition to the wire fraud conspiracy, most of the defendants are charged with participating in a mail fraud conspiracy. Lawhorn and Carter are also charged together in a money-laundering conspiracy. The indictment also charges various defendants in 38 counts of wire fraud, six counts of attempted wire fraud, and 20 counts of mail fraud. Lawhorn is also charged with one count of aggravated identity theft. Lawhorn and Luque are also charged together in one count of aggravated identity theft.

19 indicted for $1.2 Million insurance fraud conspiracy

HOLT'S SUMMIT, Mo. (AP) — Four juveniles have been arrested in the vandalism of an historic Black church in central Missouri, officials said Thursday.

Callaway County Sheriff Clay Chism said the suspects, aged 14 to 16, were arrested Wednesday and are being detained at a juvenile center in Columbia. They are charged in vandalism at the The Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Holt's Summit&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/michael-brown-jefferson-city-21682bfedf22159dbff81f42008700db">last week.</a>

He said the four male teens, from Holts Summit and Jefferson City, are being detained on felony charges of property damage and burglary but more charges could be added, KRCG&nbsp;<a href="https://krcgtv.com/news/local/four-teens-arrested-for-vandalizing-holts-summit-church">reported</a>. Investigators also continue to work to determine if more people were involved.

Evidence currently doesn't support a hate crime charge but that could change, Chism said. The FBI has been notified and is prepared to join the investigation if new evidence suggests the vandalism was a hate crime.

“Churches have been prone to burglary and theft I can definitely attest that this church has had more reports than what we see with other churches across the county,” he said.

Mt. Vernon was established by slaves in the early 1800s and later rebuilt in 1869. Both the historic church building and wone completed in the early 2000 were vandalized.

4 suspects arrested in historic Black church vandalism

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating drugs smuggled into a Kansas county jail and various state prisons.

The investigation of the synthetic drug K2 being introduced into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility started in September, according to Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter.

A liquified version of the substance has come coated on mail sent to inmates at the jail. Sedgwick County officials learned that Kansas Department of Corrections officials have seen similar issues at state prisons for some time, according to Easter.

Investigators identified a group of inmates receiving letters sprayed with the liquified K2 and intercepted over 70 pieces of the mail. 

Inmates were also controlling the sale of K2 inside the jail and charging $10 for a small square of the K2 laced paper and up to $500 for a full sheet, according to Easter. Inmates would light the paper on fire and smoke it.

In conjunction with the Kansas Department of Corrections, authorities identified the same organization sending the K2 laced paper to state prisons and the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.

&nbsp;December 2, was the first medical call inside the facility where Sedgwick County had an inmate, "overdosed, but you can’t really overdose on K-2" but was having adverse reactions due to smoking K-2,” Easter said during a Friday news conference.

Over a period of 24 hours, the jail had seven inmates that had smoked K2 and had adversed reactions. One was transported to a local hospital.

At 4p.m. Thursday, investigators conducted a large scale operation inside the jail. Deputies found K2 on various sheets of paper in one particular jail pod and evidence of distribution of the drug, according to Easter.&nbsp; Investigators also located K2 in other pods at the facility.

The KDOC identified two primary suspects who are responsible for sending K2 into the facilities. Sedgwick County deputies were able to locate the suspects at a hotel the west side of Wichita and made an arrest. During the arrest, deputies located what they thought was dynamite and summoned Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms authorities to the scene. Officials were still working the scene late Friday afternoon, according to Easter.

Suspects arrested after drugs were mailed to Kansas jails

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic-controlled House on Friday approved a bill to decriminalize and tax marijuana at the federal level. The bill would reverse what supporters called a failed policy of criminalization of pot use and take steps to address racial disparities in enforcement of federal drug laws.

Supporters say it would help reverse adverse effects of the decades-long “war on drugs” by removing marijuana, or cannabis, from the list of federally controlled substances while allowing states to set their own rules on pot. The bill also would use money from an excise tax on marijuana to address the needs of groups and communities harmed by the drug war and provide for the expungement of federal marijuana convictions and arrests.

“For far too long, we have treated marijuana as a criminal justice problem instead of as a matter of personal choice and public health,'' said Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and a key sponsor of the bill. "Whatever one’s views are on the use of marijuana for recreational or medicinal use, the policy of arrests, prosecution and incarceration at the federal level has proven unwise and unjust.''

The vote comes at a time when most Americans live in states where marijuana is legal in some form, and lawmakers from both parties agreed that national cannabis policy has lagged woefully behind changes at the state level. That divide has created a host of problems — loans and other banking services, for example, are hard to get for many marijuana companies because pot remains illegal at the federal level.

The bill also would open up more opportunities for marijuana businesses, including access to Small Business Administration loans to help ensure that minorities can take part in an industry dominated by white famers and growers.

The bill, which passed 228-164, now goes to the Republican-controlled Senate, where it is unlikely to advance. A related bill that would give pot businesses access to traditional banking services has languished in the Senate after being approved by the House last year.

On November 24, officers filed a report for rape and aggravated criminal sodomy in Manhattan involving a 12-year-old girl as the victim and a 19-year-old male known to her as the suspect, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Just after 11:35 a.m. Friday, police arrested Zelond Benymon, 19, of Ft. Riley was arrested in connection on requested charges that included 3 counts of rape and two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy.&nbsp;

Benymon&nbsp;was issued a total bond of $350,000.00 and is confined in the Riley County Jail.

On Monday afternoon, police arrested  Tavian Garrett, 23, of Manhattan on on requested charges that include five counts of rape and five counts of aggravated criminal sodomy.&nbsp;

RCPD: 2nd arrest this week for alleged rape of 12-year-old

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect who&nbsp;attempted to hide&nbsp; in a housing development in Salina and then leading a deputy in a pursuit north of town.

Just after 3:30 a.m. Friday, a deputy sheriff was on patrol north of Salina&nbsp; when he noticed a gold Chevrolet Tahoe that seemed suspicious, according to&nbsp;Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

The driver pulled the Tahoe into a driveway in the Bartley Heights housing development and shut off the lights/

The deputy circled back around and noticed that the driver's seat was down, so he got out to investigate. The deputy made contact with the driver later identified as 39-year-old Dustin Lund of Topeka who had gotten out of the vehicle.&nbsp;

When the deputy asked for the Lund's drivers license, he got back into the Tahoe and refused to get out and drove off through the yard adjacent to the driveway and fled north on Old Highway 81.

That began a pursuit through northern Saline County.&nbsp; Lund finally stopped on Old Highway 81 to near Pleasant Hill Road because he saw other law enforcement vehicles approaching, according to Soldan.

Lund had an active failure to appear warrant out of Riley County and was arrested on the following requested charges of Possession of methamphetamine, Possession of paraphernalia, Felony flee and elude and Felony obstruction, according to Soldan.

Suspect wanted in Riley Co. arrested after Saline Co. chase

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal stabbing and asking for help to locate a suspect.

Just before 4:00 p.m., Sunday, police responded to a stabbing at a residence in the 1000 block of South Richmond in Wichita, according to officer Paul Cruz. 

Upon arrival, officers located 32-year-old Rickey Mason, who had been stabbed in the chest and later died of his injuries.

The investigation revealed a disturbance occurred between Mason and a suspect identified as Marco Carrillo Fuentes, 31, Wichita over property. During the disturbance the Carrillo-Fuentes produced a knife and stabbed Mason.

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office has charged Carrillo-Fuentes with 2nd Degree murder in the stabbing death.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Carrillo-Fuentes is asked to call 911. They

Witnesses told police the stabbing followed a fight involving the victim and another person over property.

Police have not released the victim’s name and had not reported an arrests early Monday.

Search continues for suspect in fatal Kan. stabbing

Ocala, Florida – The United States Attorney for the middle district of Florida announced on Thursday the filing of a criminal complaint charging Howard D. Farley, Jr., 72, Weirsdale, with passport fraud. Farley was arrested on December 2, 2020. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison, according to U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez.

According to the complaint, in or around February 2020, Farley submitted a passport application using the name, date of birth, and Social Security number of an individual who had died as an infant in 1955. When applying for this passport, Farley failed to disclose his true identity.

In 1985, Farley, along with 73 others, was indicted by a federal grand jury in the District of Nebraska and charged with a narcotics conspiracy. Farley was alleged to be the “drug kingpin” of the Southern Line, a railroad line that was used by the drug dealers to distribute narcotics throughout the United States. Records show that Farley was the only defendant not apprehended in the case, and that he instead assumed the identity of the deceased individual in 1985, and remained a fugitive for more than 35 years.

On December 2, 2020, Farley was arrested at his home on a federal warrant for this complaint under the name “John Doe.” A fingerprint comparison confirmed that he was Howard D. Farley, Jr., the same person wanted in Nebraska since 1985. At the time of his arrest, Farley was attempting to board his private aircraft in the hangar at his home, which he flew using a fraudulent pilot’s license in the name of deceased individual. During the execution of a search warrant, authorities recovered a firearm from inside Farley’s home. Farley was convicted in 1970 of burglary in Nebraska state court.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison, according to U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez.According to the complaint, in or around February 2020, Farley submitted a passport application using the name, date of birth, and Social Security number of an individual who had died as an infant in 1955. When applying for this passport, Farley failed to disclose his true identity.In 1985, Farley, along with 73 others, was indicted by a federal grand jury in the District of Nebraska and charged with a narcotics conspiracy. Farley was alleged to be the “drug kingpin” of the Southern Line, a railroad line that was used by the drug dealers to distribute narcotics throughout the United States. Records show that Farley was the only defendant not apprehended in the case, and that he instead assumed the identity of the deceased individual in 1985, and remained a fugitive for more than 35 years.On December 2, 2020, Farley was arrested at his home on a federal warrant for this complaint under the name “John Doe.” A fingerprint comparison confirmed that he was Howard D. Farley, Jr., the same person wanted in Nebraska since 1985. At the time of his arrest, Farley was attempting to board his private aircraft in the hangar at his home, which he flew using a fraudulent pilot’s license in the name of deceased individual. During the execution of a search warrant, authorities recovered a firearm from inside Farley’s home. Farley was convicted in 1970 of burglary in Nebraska state court.

Feds: Nebraska drug suspect hid 35 years using dead baby’s ID

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects following&nbsp;an aggravated robbery.

Just after 10:30p.m. Wednesday, police&nbsp;responded to the 2000 block of North Kansas Avenue on a report of an armed robbery, according to&nbsp;LT Shane Hilton.

The suspect reportedly entered the store, brandished a firearm and left with an undisclosed amount of money.

Based on descriptions from witnesses and the assistance of security camera footage, officers were able to develop a description of the suspect. The suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Mason B. Mendoza was located by a Shawnee County Sheriff’s Deputy in the area.

Officers arrested Mendoza and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Robbery, Conspiracy

As a result of the investigation, officers arrested Tina L. Shotwell, 48, and booked her on requested charges of Aggravated Robbery, Conspiracy, Interference with LEO- Falsely reporting a felony intending to obstruct, Interference with LEO- Conceal/alter/destroy evidence in a felony case and a Misdemeanor Arrest Warrant, according to Lt. Hiton.

Security camera footage leads to Kan. armed robbery arrest

JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two women in drug charges after a traffic stop.

Just after 4p.m. Monday, a sheriff’s deputy stopped a northbound 2007 Dodge Charge for a traffic violation near 262nd and U.S. Highway 75 north of Holton, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

&nbsp;During the investigation of the traffic stop, the deputy located illegal drugs and paraphernalia.  The driver and passenger of the vehicle were subsequently arrested.  A quantity of methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and U.S. currency was seized from the vehicle.

The passenger, Melissa Reser Young, 49, of Topeka was booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, no drug tax stamp and transporting an open container.

During the Thanksgiving season, the Junction City Police Department conducted saturation patrols in cooperation with the statewide Thanksgiving Safe Arrival Traffic Campaign. The goal of this campaign was to target impaired drivers and make travel within the state safer during the holiday season. Over the period of November 20th-29th, officers had 0 DUI arrests by saturation patrol, however, 6 DUI arrests were made by normal patrol. Additionally, during the saturation patrols, 4 safety belt citations, 1 child restraint citation, 19 speeding citations, and 36 other citations were issued, and 2 non-DUI arrests were made. All in all, officers made 56 enforcement stops during the campaign.

According to agency spokesperson Captain Kirt D. Nichols, “The driving force behind enforcement campaigns like this is, first and foremost, to save lives and reduce injury on our Kansas roads.”

While this campaign may be over, our agency will always be vigilant in our enforcement of Kansas traffic safety laws.

Police report on saturation patrols 

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after an arrest Wednesday in Salina.

On Wednesday afternoon, police responded to Walmart, 2900 South Ninth Street in Salina for report of suspicious activity involving a FedEx truck driving in the parking lot, according to&nbsp; Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.&nbsp; The truck was a 2008 Utility Truck valued at $22,000.

The driver later identified as&nbsp;Raymond Lawrence, 33, of Lincoln, was reported to be wearing a leather jacket, hat and jeans and not a FedEx uniform. 

&nbsp;An officer observed the truck and a Lawrence in the northwest corner of the parking lot.&nbsp; Lawrence was pouring a liquid into the engine compartment of the truck and the liquid was running onto the ground.

Officers contacted FedEx and learned that the truck had been taken from Randy’s Auto Repair, 1015 West North Street in Salina, a short time prior to the officers being called to Walmart.

Police arrested Lawrence on requested charges of felony theft and driving while suspended, according to Forrester.

Police find Kansas felon with missing FedEx truck

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a man for alleged crimes involving a teenager.

Just after 1p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1 at approximately 1 p.m., members of the Great Bend Police Department were contacted by the social media group&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/lonestarrjusticeog/">MotorCity Justice i</a>n reference to a tip regarding a Great Bend man soliciting sex from a 15-year-old child, according to police.

After 5 p.m., the suspect later identified as Tommy Hopkins, 54, Great Bend, communicated through a chat log, planning to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/lonestarrjusticeog/videos/840886810035272">meet the girl at </a>Walmart&nbsp;in Great Bend.

Members of the Great Bend Police Department staged in the area until Hopkins arrived at the store and went inside to meet her.

Police took Hopkins to a secure office near the front of the store and arrested him on requested charges of sexual exploitation of a child, indecent solicitation of a child, and electronic solicitation. Hopkins is being held on $1,000,000 bond.

Police also executed a search warrant at Hopkins' residence in Great Bend. They found and seized additional electronic evidence in connection with this case.

Officer located a minor child of Hopkins who was staying with family at the time of this incident. Police removed the child from the home and released the child to Juvenile Services.

JOHNSON COUNTY —Shawnee Mayor Michelle Distler has been charged with felony perjury, court records show.

Distler, 47, was released Wednesday on a $2,500 bond.

The criminal complaint by the Johnson County district attorney’s office alleges that on March 7, she did “unlawfully, feloniously, intentionally, and falsely subscribe as true and correct under penalty of perjury any material matter in any declaration, verification, certificate or statement.”

Distler did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Online court records do not indicate a defense attorney in the case.

She has served as mayor of Shawnee, Kansas, since 2015 and was reelected last year. She also previously served on the city council.
