The Junction City Blue Jays defeated the Wichita Heights Falcons by a score of 27-18 on Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium in the first round of the playoffs. 

Junction City set the tempo early, scoring on the opening possession of the game on a 10-yard touchdown run from Michael Boganowski. The Blue Jays never looked back and never trailed in the game despite Wichita Heights keeping the game close. 

The Blue Jays defense gave up three touchdowns on the night, two of them rushing and one of them through the air. Junction City stopped Heights on two different two-point conversion attempts. The Falcons also missed a PAT as well. 

The turning point in the game was late in the second quarter when Junction led 7-6, Brock Bazan punted the football away. As the ball was in the air, it hit a Heights player on the helmet. The Blue Jays recovered it and then scored on the next play, on a three yard touchdown run from Griffon Bohanon. 

Two other key plays in the game came on two long punt returns, one from Losiah Autry and the other from Boganowski, which both led to short fields and touchdowns for the Blue Jays. 

Junction City head football coach Randall Zimmerman expressed that his team played well, but there are still things to improve on if the Blue Jays want to make a deep run in the playoffs. "I am very, very pleased with the win," Zimmerman said. "I think our kids played really hard tonight."

Junction City improves to 6-3 on the season and will travel to Topeka next week to take on number one seed Washburn Rural in the second round of the playoffs.

Police report two arrests in connection with a January  homicide

(TOPEKA, Kan. Oct. 27, 2023) – Stormont Vail Health proudly welcomes Dr. Keir Swisher, an Emergency Medicine specialist providing care for adult and pediatric patients at Stormont Vail Health’s Flint Hills Campus Emergency Department in Junction City.

Swisher, a native Kansan from Lindsborg, became interested in medicine because of his many childhood experiences requiring emergency medical treatment, such as broken bones and lacerations. These trips to the Emergency Room exposed him to emergency medicine and the importance of interactions between physicians and patients.

He started his career in healthcare as a certified nursing assistant. While his childhood contact with healthcare shaped his approach to medicine, his CNA background taught him what is most important to patients and what they need at the bedside for a more comfortable, human connection care experience.

Swisher strives to exceed patients’ needs while alleviating their fears. His reassurance and expertise will significantly support the patient experience in the Flint Hills Campus Emergency Department.

Dr. Swisher comes to Stormont Vail from Salina Regional Health Center in Salina. There, he served as Co-Medical Director of the Emergency Department for 14 years.

In what organizers believe may have been the largest crowd in it's history the All Treats Day Halloween event downtown Thursday evening was a big success.&nbsp; The event included a costume parade led by the Junction City High School Marching Band followed by "Trick-or Treating" throughout the downtown district as merchants handed out treats.&nbsp; After the downtown event more Halloween activities were offered at the 12th Street Community Center.&nbsp; The event was sponsored by the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce, Junction City Mainstreet and the Junction City Parks and Recreation Department.

Emergency Management has noted that freezing temperatures that are expected Friday night.

It is very important to disconnect your garden hose before cold weather arrives. Leaving your garden hose connected during freezing temperatures can cause your water pipes to freeze, burst and then flood your home.

&nbsp; Expect a taste of winter this weekend into next week. An upper level disturbance will bring a good chance for rain on Saturday, then the rain will mix with snow and sleet at times into Sunday morning. At this time any sleet or snow accumulations look to be minor, with only a dusting. Overnight lows will dip into the 20s and 30s Saturday and Sunday mornings. Expect a hard freeze Monday morning with lows in the teens and 20s. Highs will remain cold in the 30s to lower 40s, this weekend into next week.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Geary County Emergency Management passes along weather advice

Konza's Community Dental Outreach services were the recipients of the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation’s 70/80's June fundraiser event which raised over $9,000 to support this program by purchasing additional equipment to aide in serving so many students. 

During the school year, their team serves over 80 schools in 19 districts across Northeast Kansas. This program provides critical access to care and is the first encounter with dental services for many students. In some higher-need schools with limited access to dental care, decay rates can be over 30%. Keeping students in the classroom healthy and pain-free is our goal. All dental outreach services are provided at no cost to families and school districts.

Geary Community Healthcare Foundation presents check to KONZA

Geary USD 475 Board of Education members have voted 7-0 to put a planned new early childhood center on District owned property at 820 North Eisenhower in Junction City. That is the site where the former Junction City High School facility used to be located.

The District plans to enter into a lease purchase agreement totaling an estimated $35 million.&nbsp; There would be a 10-year loan repayment plan at 4.5% with federal impact aid being used to help retire the loan.

During the meeting Thursday evening Board members expressed concern about the aesthetic appearance of a chain link fence near the site for the ECC, and that it would not be appropriate next to a $35 million building

A facilities committee will be asked to discuss and prepare a five-year plan for developing and maintaining the entire site, which will also consist of land not utilized by the early childhood center. Board member Jason Butler noted that he wants the site, "to look incredible." He commented that the chain link fence is not aesthetically pleasing. Board member Ron Johnson also noted that he wants "to see a five-year plan and a plan to maintain what we have."

Junction City Commission candidate forum is set for Monday evening

The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin an emergency repair project on the 56th&nbsp;Avenue bridge over K-18 near Manhattan on Monday, Oct. 30, weather permitting. The project will repair damages that were previously made to the underside of the bridge.

During the project’s initial phase, the 56th&nbsp;Avenue bridge and westbound K-18 under the bridge will be closed to traffic to repair or replace damaged girders. Westbound K-18 will be detoured to the 56th&nbsp;Avenue off-ramp and back onto K-18 via the on-ramp. The off-ramp’s stop sign will be covered, with traffic flowing through at a reduced 30 mph speed limit.

Eastbound K-18 traffic will not be impacted. The eastbound K-18 on- and off-ramps will be open south of the bridge.&nbsp;

Manhattan Regional Airport traffic coming from the west can use the K-114 exit and Skyway Drive; traffic from the east can use the Scenic Drive exit and Skyway Drive.

This phase is expected to finish in late December, conditions permitting. Westbound K-18 will then reopen and 56th&nbsp;Avenue will partially open, with one lane in each direction.

Bridges Inc., of Newton, is the prime contractor on the $640,000 project, which is expected to be complete by late January 2024.

Due to freezing temperatures in the forecast, Milford State Park has announced that staff will begin the winterizing process for many of the park facilities. If utilities are being used on campsites, be sure to either disconnect from water OR insulate everything above ground. 

The following facilities will remain open all year: - Woodland Hills bathroom &amp; shower house- Hickory Hollow dump station- Vault toilets at boat ramps.

Facilities closing for the winter will include fish cleaning stations, Walnut Grove bathrooms, Cedar Point bathrooms, Eagle Ridge bathrooms and Prairie View bathrooms.

Scare away bacteria with these ideas on keeping goodies safe

&nbsp;Temperatures are dropping and leaves are falling which means Halloween is quickly approaching. While the holiday is not always thought to be overly risky in terms of food safety, any time perishable foods are left out can be a nightmare.

“Perishable foods such as meat and cheese trays, pasta dishes or finger sandwiches should be kept in a refrigerator until the party starts,” said Karen Blakeslee, Kansas State University food scientist and coordinator of K-State’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/">Rapid Response Center</a>.

Blakeslee shared tips on how to keep party food safe to eat:

● Arrange food on small platters so you can refrigerate and rotate food within two hours.

● Use party tray lids as coolers by filling them with ice and setting the trays on top.

● Store treats that need to be hot or cold. They should not be left out at room temperature for longer than two hours. &nbsp;● Wait until the dough and batters are fully cooked before taste testing. Say no to raw dough as uncooked flour has been linked to foodborne illness outbreaks. ● Beware of unpasteurized juice or cider, as it can contain harmful bacteria such as&nbsp;coli&nbsp;O157:H7 or&nbsp;Salmonella.

“Wash your hands before preparing food and keep raw meats away from ready to eat foods to prevent cross contamination,” Blakeslee said.

When planning a Halloween bash, keep in mind food allergies. To avoid allergic reactions, Blakeslee suggests asking guests beforehand if they have any food allergies. Keep in mind that sesame is now the ninth major food that can trigger allergic reactions, she said.

Trick-or-treating can be a sticky situation if candy is not thoroughly inspected. “Parents should examine the treats to avoid any tricks that may be in their bags. If any treats are damaged or open, discard them,” Blakeslee said.

When gathering treats to hand out, consider non-food items for kids with food allergies.

For parents, Blakeslee had another piece of advice to make Halloween a treat – and not a trick. “Give your goblins a meal or snack before trick-or-treating to fuel them through the fun,” she said.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting at a house party in Manhattan and have made three arrests.

Just before 3a.m. October 21, the Riley County Police Department Communication Center received several 911 calls reporting gunfire.&nbsp;When officers arrived on scene, they found 2 male victims with gunshot wounds. A 3rd male victim arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound from the incident.&nbsp;

On Thursday evening police reported the arrest of 21-year-old Cordarius Gowdy; 18-year-old Damerius McGee both of Ogden and Christopher Stowers, 21, of Manhattan on requested charges&nbsp; of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and one count of firing into an occupied dwelling. 

Gowdy, McGee, and Stowers are each being held on a bond of $1 Million, according to the RCPD.

&nbsp;Washington Elementary School first grade teacher Zayra Espinoza was recognized Thursday by the College of Education at Kansas State University for her exceptional work in the classroom. Each semester, the college of education produces a teacher recognition video series called Crash the Class, which showcases early career teachers who are K-State alums. 

Espinoza was able to watch the video on Thursday in front of her students, parents and K-State faculty. “This means a lot. I was so emotional watching that video and it was so awesome to hear so many of my student’s comments. It really did touch my heart,” said Espinoza, a 2022 Kansas State graduate. 

Ms. Espinoza, who is in her second year of teaching at Washington, was surprised in her classroom by Kansas State’s Dean of Education Debbie Mercer as well as video producer Kyle Wilson. By earning the recognition, Espinoza received several gifts from K-State to use in her classroom throughout the school year.

Washington Elementary Teacher Honored By K-State

The first round of the 2023 high school football playoffs begins this week across the state of Kansas. The Junction City Blue Jays will host the Wichita Heights Falcons on Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium. 

The matchup between the Blue Jays and the Falcons is the eighth seed vs the nine seed in the class 6A west bracket. 

Junction City is coming off back-to-back 40-point victories over Topeka High and Emporia. As for Wichita Heights, they are entering the playoffs on back-to-back double-digit losses.

Wichita Heights has been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs the past two seasons. As for Junction City, they have advanced past the first round of the playoffs every year since 2018.

These two teams have met eight times previously, and the series is an even 4-4 split. 

The winner will advance to the second round of the playoffs and will likely take on the number one overall seed Washburn Rural next week.

There are 7,011 students enrolled in Geary USD 475 schools. That was one of the many facts reported to a Military Affairs Council Breakfast audience in Junction City on Thursday by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston.

There are 1,735 students in grades 9-12 at Junction City High School, 1,432 in grades 6-8 at the two middle schools combined, 3,65 in grades K-5 and 537 early childhood students.

In the category "Who We Are" the District noted that 50% of students are military connected, 50% diversity and 58% poverty. More than 70% of students are attending classes in a new building or one that has had a major renovation over the past 12 years. There are 12 elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school and one alternative school. There is a robust early childhood program with one center and seven satellite locations.

There have been eight Blue Ribbon schools, 16 career pathways at Junction City High School, five new schools since 2012, 49 different languages are spoken by students in USD 475 and the district is the first one in Kansas to receive a Purple Star. The latter designation helps schools respond to educational and social emotional challenges faced by military connected children during their transition to a new school.

Niche ranked the district 23rd among best school districts in Kansas. USD 475 received an A+ in diversity and ranks 20th nationally as one of the most diverse school districts.

After 28 total years of service, Robbin Cole, CEO of Pawnee Mental Health has announced her retirement.

Cole graduated from Kansas State University in 1983 with a bachelor’s in social work. She worked as a social worker at Wharton Manor Nursing Home, worked part-time in the social work department at what is now Ascension Via Christi, volunteered at the Crisis Center, and was a co-founder of the Manhattan Emergency Shelter (MESI.)

Cole completed her master’s in social work at the University of Kansas in 1987. She started her career at Pawnee as a MSW intern in1986 and worked as a therapist for Pawnee from 1987 to 1992. Cole and her family lived in the Wichita area from 1992 to 2002 where Cole worked as the Director of Counseling and Adoption Services for Catholic Charities and then as the Clinical Director of MHNet, a managed behavioral healthcare organization.

Cole returned to Pawnee in 2002 as the Clinical Director. She became CEO in 2006. Under her tenure, Cole directed the agency through some of the most challenging years in community mental health. She oversaw layoffs in 2009 and 2010 following cuts in state funding and led the agency through the COVID pandemic of 2020.

Despite these challenges, Cole oversaw the growth of the agency budget from $12 million annually to $28 million annually. The agency purchased buildings in Junction City and Beloit and increased leased space in Mankato, Wamego, and Manhattan to meet the growing demand for services. Under Cole, the agency opened the CSU (Crisis Stabilization Unit), formed the Diversity Inclusion Group, implemented a new electronic health record, transitioned to the CCBHC (Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic) model of care, and updated its logo.

Cole was instrumental in the formation of the Riley County Mental Health Task Force and the establishment of the Mental Health Co-responder program. She serves on the RCPD CIT (Crisis Intervention Team) Council and has served as a representative of the Association of Community Mental Health Centers of Kansas to the Governors Behavioral Health Services Planning Council since 2015.

Cole was named Social Worker of the Year by KNASW, Provider of the Year by NAMI Kansas, received the Chamberlin-Rapp Exemplary Leadership Award from the Kansas Consumer Advisory Council for Mental Health, and received the Award for Service to Kansas Families from the Kansas Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

In addition to her community mental health service, Cole and her family were a host family to seven AFS high school exchange students between 2009-2018. Cole was a liaison for countless others. She served on the AFS Board as co-chair from 2011-2018. She and her husband are actively involved with the Manhattan Helping International Student Association, where Cole served as Board Chairperson from 2007-2014. Since 2018, the Coles have hosted annual gatherings in their home for the Washington Mandela Fellows at the Kansas State University Staley School of Leadership Studies. Cole is a member of the Manhattan Rotary Club and served as Club President from 2021 to 2022. She was named Rotarian of the Year in 2023.

Cole will retire on May 1, 2024. She was the first women and the longest tenured CEO of Pawnee. In her retirement, Cole plans to help her siblings with the care of their aging mother, spend time with her family, and consider how to best continue serving the community. Cole says, “If I waited until the work was done to retire from my career at Pawnee, I would never retire, because the work will never be done. Pawnee will accomplish great things in the future because of the amazing staff, leadership, board members and volunteers across ten counties who are committed to addressing the mental health and substance abuse treatment needs of our communities. With Pawnee’s recent transition to CCBHC, now is the right time to pass the baton to the next generation of leaders who will successfully guide Pawnee into the future.”

Anne Browne, Governing Board Chair says, “It’s been a rare privilege to work with Robbin. She is the captain of our ship. She has set our course for continuing excellence and the ever-expanding role of our vital community service. No words can thank her enough.”

The Pawnee Governing Board will immediately begin the process of searching for the next CEO.

The Society of the 1st Infantry Division and the Military Affairs Council combined to donate toys valued at more than $250 . Plus $150 in cash was donated&nbsp; from the proceeds from the monthly barn quilt undertaken by Phyllis Fitzgerald.

The official kickoff for Operation Santa Claus for this holiday season is scheduled Nov. 2 at 4:30 p.m. at Building 5306 on Post.

Operation Santa Claus gets a boost

Authorities have confirmed the arrest of Demetrius Jones, 34, wanted in Columbia, South Carolina on a murder allegation. Junction City Police Chief John&nbsp; Lamb said Jones was arrested by police following a flock camera system alert that led to a traffic stop off of U.S. 77 in the 100 block of West 8th Street Wednesday morning.

Jones is incarcerated in the Geary County Detention Center. According to authorities there was a shooting incident in Columbia that led to the death of one person and injury to a second.

Lamb explained that JCPD has 11 cameras in their flocking system which can read license plates on vehicles and then run the information through the National Crime Information Center, and on local warrants as well. The cameras are located near various entrances to the community. They were installed early this summer.

 Lamb confirmed there plans to add 12 more cameras to the system in Junction City in the future.

The vehicles collided.&nbsp;. 

EMS transported Campbell to Via Christi for treatment of his injuries. The RCPD released no additional details.

RCPD IDs driver injured after 2-car crash in Manhattan

The Junction City Breakfast Optimist Club has donated $200 to Shop with a Cop.

Nine years ago the Junction City Police Department began Shop With A Cop.&nbsp; Geary County USD 475 and St. Xavier’s students identified by their school’s counselors and principal are given&nbsp; a $150.00 shopping experience with a member of Law Enforcement at Wal-Mart prior to Christmas.&nbsp; 

Food, hats, and gloves are donated above the $150.00.&nbsp; Officer Torres told the Optimists that “approximately 25 law enforcement officers share time shopping and establishing a positive relationship with 60 to 70 students on a designated day in December and prior to Christmas.”&nbsp;

 </figure>By Dr. Ferrill MillerThe Junction City Breakfast Optimist Club has donated $200 to Shop with a Cop.Nine years ago the Junction City Police Department began Shop With A Cop.&nbsp; Geary County USD 475 and St. Xavier’s students identified by their school’s counselors and principal are given&nbsp; a $150.00 shopping experience with a member of Law Enforcement at Wal-Mart prior to Christmas.&nbsp; Food, hats, and gloves are donated above the $150.00.&nbsp; Officer Torres told the Optimists that “approximately 25 law enforcement officers share time shopping and establishing a positive relationship with 60 to 70 students on a designated day in December and prior to Christmas.”&nbsp;For ways to donate to Shop With A Cop, contact Al Babcock at 785-762-5912.
