Discussion about the possibility of raising the Transient Guest Tax in Geary County has been receiving attention this week. As of now there are not any formal proposals and no final action.

The Transient Guest Tax is paid by people using lodging facilities. The current rate in the county totals 6%.

According to Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau Director Donna Price, a one cent increase was initially discussed at the county commission meeting with the funds to be used to support upgrades to facilities hosting sporting events. Possible examples could include soccer fields or tennis courts. Price suggested splitting that one percent in half to fund both facility upgrades and the CVB.&nbsp;

The matter was then taken to the CVB Advisory Committee, who suggested an overall two percent increase. Half of the money, or one percent, would be used to improve the sports facilities and half for the CVB.

The issue will now go back to the county commission for discussion.

St. Xavier School recently hosted their annual Competition for a Cause Food Drive. The community joined the students of St. Xavier in a competition to collect non-perishable food items to support the Geary County Food Pantry. 

A total of 2,639 items were donated this year!

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an altercation that injured an employee at Manhattan High School.

Just before 11:30a.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery and battery in the 2100 block of Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 14-year-old boy and a 36-year old woman were listed as the victims when it was reported a 15-year-old boy engaged in an altercation with the 14-year-old.&nbsp; A school employee attempted to intervene and was battered in the process. 

Police released no details on the injuries or treatment for the school employee or additional information.

Geary County 4-H Club Day will be held Saturday, February 17th&nbsp;at the First Presbyterian Church in Junction City.&nbsp; Ginger Kopfer, 4-H Extension Agent, said events will begin at 8:00 a.m. and are scheduled to be completed with an awards ceremony around 11:20 a.m. 

4-H members will be presenting speeches, music numbers, drama programs, and parliamentary procedure demonstrations.&nbsp; Members will also be able to participate in photography and family and consumer sciences judging contests throughout the morning.

Long before the Chiefs were cementing their dynasty last Sunday and Ted Lasso was bringing Kansan-infused witticisms to the TV-streaming world, the State of Kansas was unknowingly laying groundwork for another transformational event with a foot and a ball: FIFA’s World Cup soccer tournament in 2026.

In 1998, hosting “the largest event in human history” was unimaginable – until the Kansas Legislature and Governor Bill Graves created the STAR bond program for big economic development and tourism projects. Sales tax generated in STAR bond districts pays off government bonds used to build the project. The key was to attract visitor-driven sales and income tax – a huge tenant of economic development’s best practices.

The Kansas Speedway and Legends Mall in Wyandotte County – the first STAR bond district – became the state’s number one tourist destination, a cash cow for what was one of the poorest counties in the state, and homebase to Major Leagues Soccer’s Sporting KC, Kansas’ first and only professional sports franchise. This was the impetus behind Kansas and the KC metro area out-kicking other big-time metropolises to be one of 16 North American host cities for the World Cup. The stint spans six games, including a prestigious quarter final match elongating visitor stays.

But to invoke a Coach Lasso-ism, the $30ish million ask of Kansas taxpayers from KC-based organizers KC2026 made some “more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.”

KC2026’s ask represents about 19 percent of their budget for transportation, security, and marketing operations. A Senate committee recently recommended $28 million on top of $10 million approved last year for Sporting KC stadium upgrades to support base camp for one of the 48 participating countries.

With all games being played at Arrowhead, Missouri-based businesses and governments stand to reap most of World Cup’s benefits, which is why the State of Missouri has been asked to more than double Kansas’ investment.

Will it be worth it for Kansas – especially for localities outside of the KC Metro? It’s a fair question.

Supporters say it’s a chance for Kansas to put its best foot forward on an unthinkable scale, given the event draws 9-10 times the viewership of the Super Bowl. For sheer eyeball magnitude, nothing comes close.

It’s a chance to build upon Kansas’ rising global footprint and goodwill; we export $14 billion of Kansas-based goods such as aircraft parts, beef, wheat, and soy, and eight of our top 10 trade

partners – Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Australia, Brazil, and the U.K. – are virtual World Cup locks, bringing dignitaries and throngs of loyal fans.

Also, a projected $163 million return for Kansas exceeds the typical 80 percent return on investment for public incentives.

The World Cup should be viewed as another global and local export. Just like chilled beef and airplane engines, or a $4 billion Panasonic battery plant in DeSoto and $1.9 billion computer chip plant in Burlington. They all import outside dollars that would not be here otherwise, converting into income and sales taxes for reinvestment throughout the state while lessening the tax burden on all Kansans.

That’s the thing about economic development. It’s not a zero-sum game. It’s cumulative. One thing leading to another bigger thing. Just as nobody in 1998 could have imagined this, we should believe the same in 2026.

World Cup Runneth Over Into Kansas

Three Junction City High School football players signed their letter of intent to play college football next season.&nbsp;

The three players who signed were Scott Cary, Ryan McCreath, and Hayden Puryear. All three signed with MidAmerica Nazarene University, which is in Olathe. 

Cary, McCreath, and Puryear all played on this season's Junction City football team, which finished with a 6-4 record. Cary and Puryear played on the defensive line while McCreath anchored the offensive line.

Deputies responded to K-18 Highway mile marker 177 for a single vehicle accident with a deer. John Weigle of Abilene was traveling west on K-18 Highway in a 2012 Ford F150 when he struck a deer. 

No injuries were reported. The vehicle sustained disabling damage and was removed from the scene by a wrecker.

Sheriff's Deputies respond to a non-injury accident

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club held their February 14 meeting at Jim Clark’s Chevrolet on Goldenbelt Boulevard. Meetings of the club will continue to be there until further notice. The normal meeting site of the club is the Hampton Inn where an extensive remodeling project is underway.

City Commissioner Richard Pinaire was the guest speaker at the JC Breakfast Optimist Club meeting. He shared that this is his third time to serve as a city commissioner. His message was that “with a vision, 10-15 people can make things happen.”

In previous terms, Commissioner Pinaire worked with others on preservation projects. Some of those included the C.L. Hoover Opera House; Bartell Square and Rathert Field/Stadium.

He told the Optimist Club members that some of his current goals are “to get curbs and sidewalks from 10th Street to Grant Avenue; repair a collapsing wall near the 5th Street Park; if lawful remove roundabouts on Jefferson and Jackson Streets and the one near the Dillon’s store; provide city water and sewage to any properties annexed by the city and if there still is a plan to expand the access to Taylor Road, that would only be done with a public vote.”

Richard also encouraged people to “talk to their commissioners, to vote and (do what is possible) to preserve our democracy.”

Next week’s JC Breakfast Optimist Club meeting will include representatives from the JCHS JROTC Battalion. That meeting will also be at Jim Clark’s Chevrolet. Clark’s is a business sponsor that supports Geary County youth and the Optimist Club.

There will also be a partnership with the MainStreet organization who will be hosting their Main Street Market at that location on that day.

According to MAC Director Isreal Waddell, the Armed Forces Day activities will include a speaker, Sgt. Maj. of the Army ( Ret.) Michael Grinston and U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, who will also attend and make remarks. There will be Soldiers, a stage, static displays, food trucks and a DJ.

The Junction City Lady Jays scored the first basket of the game on Tuesday night, and that was the only lead they would have the rest of the game as the Topeka Hayden Lady Wildcats defeated Junction City 58-20 on Tuesday night. 

After a close first quarter, Topeka Hayden scored 21 points in the second quarter while holding the Lady Jays scoreless. The halftime score was 30-3 in favor of Topeka Hayden. 

Shots began to fall in the second half for Junction City, as five players scored on the night. Three players had four points, and those players were Makenna Hatcher, Morgan Nabus, and Sara Rexrode. 

With the loss, Junction City falls to 1-17 on the season.

The Blue Jays continue their hot streak and stay undefeated at home this season as Junction City beat Topeka Hayden 73-58. 

The first half was very close, tied at the end of the first quarter, then Junction City leading 30-28 at halftime. 

The Blue Jays exploded out of halftime by scoring 26 third-quarter points and holding the Wildcats to eight. The Blue Jay lead was 52-36. 

Despite several comeback attempts from Hayden, the Blue Jays secured a 15-point win thanks to four players in double-digits. Junior Larkin Turner led the way with 22 points, Ja'Twaan Williams had 14, Lovell Autry added 12, and Jackson Austin and Tre Ruffin finished with 11 points. 

With the win, Junction City improves to 16-2 on the season and will hit the road to take on Emporia on Friday.

January had below average temperatures and above average precipitation. But perhaps overshadowing both of these was the extreme variability that was seen in the span of just over two weeks! The average daily high for January was 33.1, 6.7 degrees below normal. The average overnight low was 19.5, one tenth of a degree above normal. This resulted in a monthly mean temperature of 26.3, 3.3 degrees below normal. The highest temperature for the month was 69 on the 31st. The coldest was the overnight low of -12 on the 15th. This resulted in a monthly mean temperature extreme for the month of 81 degrees. The high of 1 degree on the 14th was 38 degrees below normal for that date. The high of 69 on the 31st was 27 degrees above normal for that date! 

There were several temperature records set in January. The low of -12 on the 15th broke the old record low of -6 set in 1979 and again in 1984. The low of -11 on the 16th broke the old record low for that date of -7, also set in 1979 and again in 1984. The following are all record low high temperatures. The high of 5 on the 13th broke the old record of 6 set in 1979. The high of 1 on the 14th broke the old record of 7 set in 1972 and the high of 4 on the 15th broke the old record of 13 set in 2005. While we were below normal we were fortunately a long way from record cold! The coldest January on record was in 1979 when the monthly mean temperature was only 12.1 degrees. The warmest January on record was in 2006 with a monthly mean tempeature of 43.9, a monthly temperature more appropriate for the month of March!

A rainy/snowy period just ahead of the bitterly cold weather brought well above average precipitation to the area for January. Total liquid precipitation was 1.87 inches, two and a half times the January normal of 0.73 inches. After receiving double the normal December precipitation, the winter has us well set up for good spring growth! January and February are tied for the snowiest months with average snowfall of 4.7 inches each month. The area received 7.6 inches of snowfall in January, all in a week and a half period ending on the 15th. Long term average snowfall, season to date, total through January is 9.4 inches. Season to date we have received 16.5 inches, just 1.5 inches below the long term average seasonal snowfall of 18 inches.

While spring doesn’t officially arrive until late March, February does start to warm things up for us. Average daily high temperatures improve from 40 on the 1st to 50 on the 29th. Overnight lows slowly start to warm improving from 19 degrees at the start of the month to 26 degrees by month’s end. Average snowfall for February is 4.7 inches with average liquid precipitation of 1.10 inches. February is our second driest month, right behind January.-

Was January Cloudier Than Normal? Many local residents expressed a feeling that January was a dreary gray month without a lot of sunshine. It’s difficult to express what is a normal amount of cloudiness, or sunshine, for any month. We can, however, look at light intensity maximums day by day, as well as ultraviolet indexes. Sunlight intensity is measured in lumens, or lux, and ultraviolet intensity on a scale from 0 to 10. A bright cloudless summer day will often have intensity in excess of 100,000 lux and an ultraviolet index of 10. With the sun lower in the sky in the winter, a sunny day is more likely to have sunlight intensity of around 65,000 lux and ultraviolet intensity of only 6, although a truly bright sunny day may reach 100,000 lux and an ultraviolet index of 8. Looking at the daily maximum for sunlight intensity we find that there were only 6 days with intensities over 60,000 lux. Conversely we find 12 days had a sunlight intensity of under 30,000 lux. These days would be considered very gray and dreary. The other 13 days of January had moderate intensities indicating some cloud cover. While statistically, this data can get very “messy”, it is enough to confirm that yes, January was a rather dreary gray month!&nbsp;

JUNCTION CITY, Kan.&nbsp;– Geary County Schools USD 475 has announced that it had 2,736 students from throughout the district earn the 95-0-3.0 Thrive Award for the first semester.

“I am incredibly proud of all of our students who were able to receive this honor the first semester. Our teachers and staff have been really working hard this school year and this just highlights that their efforts are truly making a difference both in and out of the classroom,” said Dr. Reginald Eggleston, USD 475 Superintendent of Schools.&nbsp;

Overall, USD 475 had 1,709 students receive the award at its elementary schools, while 1,027 students were honored at the secondary level.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To receive this honor, students, who have been recognized at their respective schools with a special certificate throughout the months of January and February, had to achieve 95% attendance, 0 discipline referrals and a 3.0 GPA during the first semester.

USD 475 Superintendent Dr. Reginald Eggleston has told JC Post that the District is looking at making possible renovations to the Devin Center in the 2025-26 school year. "Moving everyone out of the current facility into the Franklin Elementary School," while the work is under way.

Eggleston noted that a lot of planning remains to be done. "We're looking at putting some things in place that will just help us do the work more efficiently." That could include meeting space, a room for Board of Education meetings and departments in strategic places to better serve the community when the public comes in to do business.

Between now and the 2025-26 school year the Board and the operations staff, and Superintendent will be looking at options for those renovations.

CVB Director provides an update on activities

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged identify theft in Manhattan.

Just after 2p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for theft in the 1800 block of College Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. 

An 80-year-old woman reported two known suspects gained access to her debit cards and used them without her permission. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000.&nbsp;

Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD: $3000 theft with unauthorized debit card transaction

Junction City Police Chief John Lamb has announced that on Friday February 2nd, Officer Bobby Walker, Officer Michael Contreras and 20 other officers in Kansas Graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC). 

The class started on October 9, 2023 and was the 320th class since it was established in 1968.&nbsp;
