<a></a><a></a><a>This weekend, the Kansas Department of Transportation suggests allowing extra travel time and using an alternative route for motorists traveling I-70 through Junction City in Geary County. During high traffic volume, extended delays can be expected in the area due to an ongoing pavement replacement project.</a>

The I-70 construction is along a 4-mile stretch in Junction City between Washington Street (Exit 296) and K-57 (Exit 300). Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction, as median crossovers are used to carry all traffic at a reduced speed through the work zone on the eastbound lanes.

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to temporarily close two eastbound I-70 on-ramps, J Hill Road (Exit 299) and K-57 (Exit 300), at Junction City from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, in an attempt to ease traffic congestion. During that time many motorists will be traveling to the Kansas State - Houston football game that kicks off in Manhattan at 11 a.m.&nbsp;

The multi-phase $30 million project includes construction of temporary crossovers, pavement and drainage structure replacement, bridge rehabilitation and resurfacing of some local routes. Work is scheduled to be completed by December of 2025, weather permitting.

Rebecca Peterson, daughter of Scott and Beth Peterson, was recognized as the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s St. Xavier’s Catholic Schools Student of the Quarter on October 25.&nbsp; She is a senior and is active in many activities and sports at St. Xavier’s Catholic School. Rebecca is also the Treasurer of the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s Junior Optimist Club. 

Her Principal, Shawn Augustine, stated that Rebecca is a go-getter who many students look up to as a role model.” &nbsp;After high school graduation, Rebecca plans to graduate from Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas with a major in business management and writing and then open her own bookstore.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged rape.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, police arrested 19-year-old Trenton Bunnell of Kansas City Tuesday afternoon on a Riley County District Court warrant for rape. 

The original charge was reported in July 2022. Bunnell. He remains jailed&nbsp; on a bond of $75,000.

Just after 9p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for motor vehicle theft in the 1100 block of Bluemont Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 38-year-old man reported an unknown suspect took his black Kia Forte with a black Glock 19 and two magazines inside. 

Police did not report an estimated total loss associated with this case.

He may also be visited in his office located on the 2nd Floor of the County Annex building, 139 E. 8th Street, Junction City, KS 66441. Livington can explain how flood insurance works; however, you will need to contact an insurance agent for an actual quote. He can offer advice about coverage and how to find an insurance agent.

If needed, a representative from the County can make site visits to your home or property to review flooding, drainage, and sewer problems. Geary County Flood Plan information

The JCPD has reported the arrest of a 21-year old Junction City man, Andre Taiquez Baker, on recommended charges of 1st Degree Murder and Interference with LEO.

The arrest occurred at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Junction City Police Department. Specific details have not yet been released by police but JC Post will provide more information as soon as it is available. The investigation is continuing.

Geary County Emergency Management has issued a waning notice. THIS AFFECTS ALL IN GEARY COUNTY SOUTH &amp; EAST OF JUNCTION CITY WHO ARE ON RURAL WATER DIST #1. A Boil Water Advisory was issued for a Portion of Morris County Rural Water District No. 1, Morris and The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for a portion of Morris County Rural Water District No. 1 public water supply system located in Morris and Geary County. 

This advisory affects customers in the following areas:      North of Carr Road south along Highway 57      Clark’s Creek Road      Thomas Creek Road      Lyons Creek Road       Highway 77 south of Junction City      The Northern section of Humboldt Creek Road,&nbsp; the northern portion of Lower McDowell Creek Road to I-70.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:     Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.      Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.      If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.      Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. 

     Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians. 

 The advisory took effect on October 22 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a line break Sunday resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.  Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.  Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory. For consumer questions, please contact the water system at 785-482-3303, or KDHE at 785-296-5514.&nbsp;

Geary USD 475 Board of Education members will consider approval of a location for an Early Childhood Center when they meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Mary Devin Center. For bids to be taken on the lease purchase for the facility there has to be a designated site for the project to be built.

MANHATTAN — The National Defense Education Program recently awarded Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://coe.k-state.edu/academics/departments/rural-education-center/" target="_blank">Rural Education Center</a>&nbsp;and its partners a $4 million grant to enhance opportunities for rural and military-connected students interested in pursuing STEM careers.

The grant brought together three critical partners — the Rural Education Center, the Center for Remote Sensing and Integrated Systems at the University of Kansas, and the University of Tennessee Space Institute. The project is just one of 13 funded, and it's one of only two STEM-related grants awarded from the National Defense Education Program.

The project, Applied Research and Innovation Scholarship for Engineering Students in Advance Aerospace Technologies, AI, and Cybersecurity, or Project ARISE, will provide a pathway to career opportunities for students through three phases.• Phase 1: An advanced aerospace technologies exploration experience for high school students rising into grade 12.• Phase 2: An early research incubator program for incoming college freshmen and community college transfer students.• Phase 3: A guided research and internship experience training for undergraduate students who complete the first two phases or community college transfer students who complete the second phase. The four-year program is expected to impact more than 420 students and provide 222 annual scholarships for at least 102 rural and military-connected students over four years. The project will also prioritize underrepresented student populations from rural and military-connected schools . &nbsp;

&nbsp; "Rural and military-connected students bring extraordinary life experiences and perspectives to every academic field, and we are elated that this grant program will harness their aptitudes and creativity into 21st century solutions for Kansas and our nation," said Debbie Mercer, dean of the K-State College of Education. Project ARISE will be led by lead principal investigator J. Spencer Clark, professor and director of the Rural Education Center in the&nbsp;<a href="https://coe.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Education</a>&nbsp;at K-State. To date, Clark has led grant projects for the Rural Education Center that total more than $11 million.

.The Department of Defense, through the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, recently announced grant awards totaling up to $53 million to 13 organizations under the National Defense Education Program. The grants support the defense education programs in manufacturing engineering, STEM scholarship programs, civil society programs, and enhanced civics education programs. The ARISE grant focuses on STEM scholarship programs.&nbsp;

Geary County Clerk Courtney Gilbert has announced that In Person Advance Voting was scheduled to begin this past Monday at the Geary County Office Building.&nbsp;

JUNCTION CITY, Kan.- The H.D. Karns Innovations Academy JAG-K program was awarded the prestigious 6-of-6 Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) National Award on Monday night. The 6-of-6 Award, which is the highest honor a JAG program can receive, is awarded to JAG programs, nationally, that meet or exceed performance measures in six categories: graduation rate, employment rate, full-time employment, total full-time positive outcomes, connectivity rate, and continued education rate.

JAG has a 12-month follow-up period with all seniors as part of its evidence-based, data-driven national model. Also on Monday, students at the H.D.&nbsp; Karns building were not only inducted into the 2023-24 JAG-K program, but also watched as their classmates were sworn in as elected officers.

 JAG-K is a multi-year, in-school program for students in grades 6-12 that offers tools to successfully transition students into post-secondary school, the military, or directly into the workforce with marketable skills. Participants in the program face multiple barriers to success that their JAG-K Career Specialist helps them overcome through a nationally accredited, evidence-based model.

The Band Blast at Junction City High School Tuesday evening will begin at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

Bands from Junction City Middle School, Fort Riley Middle School and the symphony, wind ensemble and marching band from JCHS will all perform.

There will be free admission for the concert.

Geary County Convention and Visitors Bureau staff members attended the Kansas Tourism Conference in Dodge City last week. One highlight for the CVB was the Kansas Destination Specialist award received by Paige Mendoza.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged&nbsp; larceny from a motor vehicle that occurred just after 3p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of Pebblebrook Circle in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 20-year-old man reported an unknown suspect took a Great Lakes Firearm Rifle, AR-15, Model DB15 Chambered IN .233, 16” barrel, and OD green with a sniper scope. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,600. Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2013 Honda Fit driven by Isaiah Endres, 20, Fort Riley and a Yamaha MT03 driven by Shay White, 24, Manhattan, collided&nbsp;near the 1000 block of Scenic Drive in Manhattan 

EMS transported White to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. Endres was issued a notice to appear for failure to yield the right of way.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.

Want to beat the Iowa State Cyclones when they come to town the end of November? If you bleed purple, I bet you do. This year you can personally be a part of that victory. Yes, the Wildcats might be a little short on the depth chart at linebacker, but I think most of our playing days are behind us. I have also volunteered to call plays in. Fortunately, our coaches are much too smart for that.

No, county Farm Bureaus, Farm Bureau Financial Services agents and Wildcat fans have the opportunity to work within their communities to gather food donations and participate in a friendly competition with other agents and county Farm Bureaus through the End Hunger Food Drive sponsored by Kansas Farm Bureau, Farm Bureau Financial Services and K-State athletics. The food drive has already started and will run until Nov. 15, and everyone who participates will be a winner in my book. 

The counties and agents bringing in the most donations will receive tickets to the game along with other prizes. All of the donations will go to local food pantries, helping our friends and neighbors in need. I am so proud of our organization for all the work we do to feed those who do not have enough. We all take great pride in growing our abundant, safe, healthy food supply and yet we also want to make sure that everyone has access to it, too We do need to get busy.

For those of you from Iowa, please don’t take it too hard, we still like you, just not when you play against K-State. Well, that and we don’t like to lose. So here is to the competition, may the best team win! My prediction will be for a big score for our food pantries and that will be good for another Wildcat Victory.
