<a>MANHATTAN, Kan.</a>&nbsp;–&nbsp;As K-State football fans prepare to descend upon Bill Snyder Family Stadium for the home opener Saturday against SEMO, fans are alerted to the following construction projects in and around the Manhattan area that could impact travel and parking plans.

I-70 at Junction City –&nbsp;A&nbsp;pavement replacement project is underway between Exit 295 on the west and mile marker 302 on the east of Junction City. The passing lanes in each direction will have periodic closures to allow for crossover construction as the project continues. The speed limit is reduced in this area and delays are anticipated with heavy gameday traffic. Please allow for additional travel time to and from the stadium and use caution in the work zone.

North Campus Corridor –&nbsp;Kimball Avenue is fully open, allowing access to all stadium and auxiliary parking lots.

Parking Lots –&nbsp;With the completion of the Morgan Family Volleyball Arena/Morris Family Olympic Training Center, Gate 1 from College Avenue is open again to all Ahearn Fund members assigned parking in the West stadium lot. Gate 3 (from College Avenue) and Gate 5 (from Kimball Avenue) are also available.

On the east side of the stadium, the only change this season is that Ahearn Fund members assigned to Lot E-1 will be required to exit postgame out of Gate 7 eastbound onto Kimball Avenue to help safely expedite exiting traffic from Lot E-2 on the south end of the Shamrock Practice Facility.

Satellite Parking Lots –&nbsp;The signal light at Gate 8/Agriculture Road (Grain Science Center) is operational. Parking in the Grain Science Center Lot for eastbound and westbound traffic is accessible only from the signal.

Fans parking in the Agronomy Lot north of the stadium will be required to enter from the new frontage road on College Avenue just north of Kimball Avenue. This is the only entrance into the Agronomy Lot.

Final construction of the frontage road from the Grain Science Center to Denison Avenue will be ongoing through the fall. Along with the construction of a new commercial office building just west of the KSU Foundation, parking has been reduced at the Foundation but is still accessible from Denison Avenue at this time. Additional satellite parking is available at the Equine Center off Denison Avenue to the north of the Fire Station and in the new Bullpen Lot off Kimball Avenue east of Denison Avenue at the Discovery Way entrance to NBAF.

All parking lots around Bill Snyder Family Stadium open five hours prior to kickoff (1 p.m. this Saturday).&nbsp;As always, fans are encouraged to arrive early as pregame traffic could become congested.

A free shuttle sponsored by the K-State Union, Housing and Dining Services and K-State Campus Store is available to fans with free parking in the K-State Parking Garage. The shuttle begins two hours prior to kickoff from the south circle on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, between the K-State Parking Garage and the Union. Passengers will be dropped off near the Jardine Plaza Neighborhood. Return trips resume with five minutes remaining in the third quarter, and rides will continue until approximately one hour after the end of the game.

K-State Fans are Alerted to Road Construction Projects

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club hosted Alicia Scofield, the Director of Student Services for USD 475 this morning at their weekly meeting.&nbsp;

Scofield has been with the district for 19 years, but this is just her second year as the Director of Student Services. She works with counselors, nurses, teachers, administrators, Fort Riley, and Junction City mental health agencies to improve all aspects of students lives.&nbsp;

Scofield said, "There is a strategic plan in the district that among other things includes academics, emotional/social support, parent engagement and recruitment/retention of staff."

She also shared that there will be a Community Awareness presentation at Junction City High School on September 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Guest speakers include John Calvert from the Kansas State Department of Education and Mary Jo Fleming with the local Health Department. Local law enforcement agents will also be there presenting information about vaping and the impact on student's health.&nbsp;

USD 475 Director of Student Services meets with Breakfast Optimist Club

The Geary County Historical Society has announced that Kim Neptune is the new Programs and Education Director.&nbsp;

Neptune pursued a master's degree in history at Colorado State University with a focus on public history and museum studies. She&nbsp; previously worked as the Tobin Theatre Arts Fund Assistant Curator at the McNay Art Museum in Texas.&nbsp;

Neptune will begin her new role in mid-September.

Jordan McCann, Chamber of Commerce Activities Director, noted that the event began as a business expo eight or ten years ago. "Then rebranded after COVID to the Junction City Expo. The idea is for our Junction City businesses to get exposure, get them out of their brick and mortar,&nbsp; get them out of their homes, and have community awareness of their businesses. "

More than 65 businesses and organizations signed up to participate in the expo.

Junction City Expo takes the business center stage Tuesday night

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a high school student for an alleged school threat.

Just after 2p.m. Tuesday, police arrested 16-year-old&nbsp; Brycen Tyler, 16, of Manhattan at Manhattan High School&nbsp; after it was reported he made threats of violence and indications he may possess a weapon, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A School Resource Officer made contact with Tyler after receiving reports of these comments and found that he was not in possession of a weapon. 

Ultimately, Tyler was arrested on requested charges of aggravated criminal threat and transported to the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Facility in Junction City.

RILEY COUNTY –&nbsp;Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on child sex allegations.

On Tuesday, police arrest 37-year-old&nbsp;David Hearlson of Junction City&nbsp; in connection to child sex crimes reported to have occurred between March and May of 2019 involving a minor female victim known to him, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Hearlson was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant on requested charges that include three counts each of rape and aggravated indecent liberties with a child, and one count each of attempted aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated indecent solicitation of a child, and criminal threat. 

He remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $200,000.

Beginning Wednesday, August 30, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin resurfacing Goldenbelt Boulevard in Junction City from the east to the west.

Flaggers and a pilot car will direct traffic through the work zone, drivers can anticipate minimal delays during this time.

On Friday, September 1, the contractor anticipates temporarily closing Goldenbelt Boulevard to traffic, just east of U.S. 77, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Gov. Kelly invites public input on broadband infrastructure plan

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;Donations to Kansas State University in fiscal year 2023 reached more than $226.4 million in private gifts through the Kansas State University Foundation, closely mirroring last year's all-time-record fundraising of $235 million. The value of K-State's long-term investment pool, managed by the KSU Foundation, reached $952.3 million as of June 30, 2023. The&nbsp;foundation's investment performance has consistently outperformed college and university peers in the past few years, ranking No. 7 among the nation's university and college endowments in 2022.

"The stellar performance of foundation staff, combined with the generosity of our alumni and friends, is having a tremendous impact at K-State through significant new gifts for facilities, faculty endowments and scholarships,"&nbsp;said Greg Willems, president and CEO of the KSU Foundation.

One of the truly remarkable highlights of the year was securing over $75 million in record time to compete for matching funds from the state of Kansas for the university's Ag Innovation Initiative. In February, K-State President Richard Linton certified the amount — raised through collaboration between the foundation and College of Agriculture in just four months — and the state awarded $25 million in matching funds.

"The K-State community of donors — alumni, friends and corporate partners — came together this year to advance not only K-State but also the 105 counties we serve,"&nbsp;said Linton.&nbsp;"Now more than ever, private gifts are central to the success of K-State students, faculty and programs, and to our ability to deliver on our promise to become a next-generation land-grant university.&nbsp;It is an honor to thank all our generous donors who supported K-State this year and every year."

Other key achievements for the 2023 fiscal year included:• Donors established 152 new scholarships to address student needs.

•&nbsp;A $3 million gift helped Cats'&nbsp;Cupboard build a new food pantry facility.

•&nbsp;A total of $47.9 million was raised for scholarships and student success overall.

•&nbsp;Donors gave a record-breaking 11 gifts of $5 million or more, as well as 36 gifts of $1 million or more.

•&nbsp;The largest-ever outright corporate gift to Kansas State University was secured at $10 million from General Atomics for the Salina campus.

•&nbsp;The fourth named deanship at Kansas State University, the Eldon Gideon Dean of the College of Agriculture, was established through a $5 million endowed gift.

•&nbsp;Construction began on a third KSU Foundation-development office building&nbsp;at 1960 Kimball Avenue in the Edge District. The&nbsp;80,000-square-foot&nbsp;development is scheduled for completion in July 2024.

KSU Foundation announces fundraising totals for fiscal year 2023

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a dispute over a car in Manhattan.

Just after 8p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for criminal deprivation of property in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 A 53-year-old woman reported a 33-year-old man known to her sold her car without permission. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000. The car was later recovered by Junction City Police at approximately 11:15 p.m. Monday.

USD 475 schedules a Community Awareness Meeting

RILEY COUNTY–Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged sex crimes.

On Monday, police arrested 64-year-old <a href="https://www.clarkpetersenchiropractic.com/">Clark Petersen</a> of Manhattan&nbsp; in connection to sex crimes reported to have occurred at his chiropractic office,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/Petersen+Chiropractic:+Clark+A.+Petersen+D.C./@39.194001,-96.60703,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x816ed6b4af777c41!8m2!3d39.194001!4d-96.60703" target="_blank">1419 Westport Landing Place&nbsp; </a>#109 in Manhattan, between 2018 and 2022 involving five female victims now between the ages of 37 and 59, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Dept.

Petersen was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for 16 counts of sexual battery and one count each of rape, aggravated sexual battery, and lewd and lascivious behavior. He remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $300,000.

RILEY COUNTY–Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged sex crimes.On Monday, police arrested 64-year-old <a href="https://www.clarkpetersenchiropractic.com/">Clark Petersen</a> of Manhattan&nbsp; in connection to sex crimes reported to have occurred at his chiropractic office,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/Petersen+Chiropractic:+Clark+A.+Petersen+D.C./@39.194001,-96.60703,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x816ed6b4af777c41!8m2!3d39.194001!4d-96.60703" target="_blank">1419 Westport Landing Place&nbsp; </a>#109 in Manhattan, between 2018 and 2022 involving five female victims now between the ages of 37 and 59, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Dept.Petersen was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for 16 counts of sexual battery and one count each of rape, aggravated sexual battery, and lewd and lascivious behavior. He remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $300,000.The investigation into Petersen continues, anyone with information is encouraged to contact Detective Jessie Ehrlich at (785) 473-2397. There will be a joint Junction City, Geary County, USD 475 joint meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the C. L. Hoover Opera House.

The agenda includes discussion of the proposed Taylor Road Interchange on I-70 and development of streets and roads serving that area, and local partnership.

Other topics include joint agreements between units of government, a walking trail from Spring Valley Road to Blue jay Way and a sidewalk along Spring Valley Road to Valley Drive.

City, county, school board schedule a joint meeting

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie County farmer and rancherI admit going to Africa was never on my “bucket list”. Earlier this year I was offered the opportunity to travel there with the Kansas Farm Bureau Casten Fellows. Was I apprehensive? Absolutely. Was I nervous? You bet. However, after a quick check with my family it was clear this was a chance of a lifetime and something I could not pass up. Boy, am I glad I took that leap of faith because my perspective of the world will never be the same.I am not sure I ever completely wrapped my head around the fact I was halfway around the world from my home and my family. In some ways Uganda and Tanzania seemed so different but, in many ways, things seemed the same. On one hand I was in a land of banana trees and coffee plants; I saw giraffes casually walking through farm fields and monkeys dancing across the roof of my cabin. On the other hand, I talked to farmers with the same basic concerns I have — prices and weather. I met some of the most gracious, kind and caring people I have ever met. In many ways our worlds seemed very familiar.I have been asked to describe the trip and often I feel my explanation is very inadequate. What I experienced was so big that words and pictures are lacking. I do know, without a doubt, that my understanding of the world has grown immensely. I only wish that all of you could have experienced the same things I did. If you ever get that opportunity, make sure you take it. Your world will be richer because of the challenge you accepted.Here is the great thing, you will have that chance. Next year the Casten Fellows will be asking for applications. Do we know where they are going? No, but does it really matter? In my humble opinion, no. Like I said, Africa is somewhere I had not really ever thought about going and now I am very thankful I had that chance. Take that challenge and stretch yourself. Will it always be comfortable? Again, the answer is no. There were times that the trip took me far out of my comfort zone and that is a good thing. Real growth cannot happen if we are comfortable.It is tough to be gone for two weeks, I will not lie. I missed home, but the reward was more than worth it. I came away with both an appreciation of Africa and its people but also for what I have at home, my family and everything I have been blessed with in my life. If you at all think going abroad would be interesting or you are looking for a true growth experience, I highly recommend you apply for the Casten Fellows next year.Not only will you benefit personally from the trip, but our organization will also reap the rewards of having members who better understand the world we live in. McCain Performance Series hosts a peaceful transition of comedy from Capitol Steps to Capitol Fools

GEARY COUNTY —One person was injured in a crash during a chase by law enforcement just before 10:30p.m. Saturday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Yamaha motorcycle driven by 23-year-old Calvin D.&nbsp;Amacker Jr.&nbsp; of Junction City was westbound in the 300 Block of Ash Street actively fleeing from Law Enforcement. 

The driver took the curve in the roadway too quickly. The motorcycle left the roadway to the south, struck a utility junction box and the driver was ejected.

EMS transported Amacker Jr. to Stormont Vail Junction City for treatment of serious injuries. He was wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.&nbsp; Authorities have not released details on what prompted the chase or possible charges.

You never need to pay to sign up for government student loan debt relief programs — but scammers will tell you otherwise. Here’s how to spot scam companies that charge illegal upfront fees for so-called help with your student loans.

The first thing to know is this: you don’t have to pay for help managing your student loans. If someone tries to charge you up front, before they’ve done anything, that’s your first clue that this is a scam.&nbsp;&nbsp;And nobody but a scammer will ever offer you quick loan forgiveness.

Take, for example,&nbsp;Apex, a company that — according to an FTC lawsuit — enrolled people in their sham student loan forgiveness program. During the&nbsp;<a href="https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/covid-19">federal student loan pause</a>, when most borrowers weren’t in contact with their loan servicers, Apex signed people up for what they called debt relief programs.

So, how did they convince borrowers to get on board? Apex employees pretended they worked with the Department of Education (they didn’t) and told borrowers they were their new loan servicers (they weren’t). They then signed borrowers up to make automatic payments to a debt relief program that didn’t exist. The problem? Payments went to Apex’s pockets, rarely making it to actual loan servicers. And, to add insult to injury, the COVID-19 federal student loan pause meant that federal borrowers didn’t have to make any loan payments starting March 2020.

Now that the return to repayment is coming up, start at&nbsp;<a href="http://studentaid.gov/repay">StudentAid.gov/repay</a>&nbsp;to look at the status of your federal student loans. You’ll find, among other things, information on income-driven repayment plans that adjust your monthly payment based on your income. If your loans are private, go directly to your loan servicer.&nbsp;And if you spot a scam, the FTC wants to know about it:&nbsp;<a href="https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/">ReportFraud.ftc.gov</a>.

The Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program has announced the newest members of the training experience along with a milestone celebration. The program was formed in 1992 and is celebrating its 30th Anniversary of programming with the upcoming 2023-24 program year.&nbsp;&nbsp;The festivities were held in Manhattan at the Flint Hills Discovery Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to FHRLP Board chair and program alumnus, Sarah Keatley, “From that very first 1993-94 class, 636 members of this region have stepped up to make a measurable difference in the lives and livelihoods of generations of residents from the north-central Flint Hills and western KAW Valley communities we call home.”&nbsp;

Founding and continuously supporting organization representatives we’re recognized as well during the event including Fort Riley, The Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce, City of Manhattan, the Riley County Commission, the Geary County Commission, City of Junction City, City of Wamego, Wamego Area Chamber of Commerce, Pottawatomie County, and the newly added Wabaunsee County Commission.&nbsp;
