The JC Breakfast Optimist Club met on August 23, and members were introduced to the Safe Families Organization from Robin and Brian Berthod.&nbsp;

Robin is the Community and Church Engagement Coordinator for the local Safe Families organization. Brian is a US Army Chaplain stationed at Fort Riley.&nbsp;

The Safe Families for Children organization is a national, volunteer-led movement that is committed to keeping children safe and families together during challenging times.&nbsp;

Safe Families is a Christian organization which focuses on building relationships between volunteer families and families that need served and supported. 

The organization is searching for people in the community who are willing to host children in their home for a few hours, days, or weeks. To qualify, individuals must have a background check performed,&nbsp; their home must be&nbsp; inspected and potentially other requirements must be met before children and their families are connected.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Geary County officials are seeking potential volunteers for a position on the new county metropolitan planning commission that is being formed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

County Commission Chairman Keith Ascher noted the volunteer must live in the unincorporated area of the county. This new board is a separate planning board from the one that exists in Junction City. 

Ascher noted that inquiries should be directed to Troy Livingston, their GIS Planning and Zoning Administrator (troy.livinston@gearycounty.org). The new county board will consist of five members.

Kansas State University interior design students have secured the top award in the 2023 Interior Design Educators Council, IDEC, Video Competition. This year's entries focused on designing for the senses. K-State's entry features how interior design supports the health and well-being of neurodivergent groups. This is the fourth consecutive year interior design students from K-State have placed in this competition.

The&nbsp;interior&nbsp;design students&nbsp;on the team include&nbsp;seniors Olivia Richardson,&nbsp;Augusta;&nbsp;Benjamin Hall,&nbsp;Elbing;&nbsp;Jadyn Wolf,&nbsp;Wellington;&nbsp;and&nbsp;Savannah Harrison,&nbsp;Wichita.&nbsp; Migette Kaup, professor and interior design program director, served as the faculty advisor for the team.&nbsp; "IDEC's annual video competition is an excellent way for our students to apply what we teach them throughout our curriculum and professionally communicate the impact and value of their discipline," Kaup said. "This year's topic gave our interior design students another way to demonstrate how they use their knowledge about human health to design solutions that support wellness and create supportive environments for all people." K-State's interior design program in the College of Health and Human Sciences is the only four-year interior design program in the state of Kansas accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. Graduates of the interior design program enjoy employment in all sectors of commercial design, such as health care, workplace, education, hospitality, retail, civic, sports, aviation, event planning, and in multi-family and high-end residential design. The Interior Design Educators Council, or IDEC, is an international organization for interior design educators and supports the advancement of interior design education, scholarship and service. IDEC aims to support professional interior design educators at each stage of their career while providing interior design students the resources needed for educational and professional development. K-State interior design team claims top prize for the second year at competition

GEARY COUNTY - On August 22, 2023, just after 6:00 pm, the Geary County Sheriff's Office, along with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, located the remains of missing man, Pacey Staines.

An autopsy has been scheduled, more information may be released following the completion of the autopsy.

Geary County sheriff's authorities have resumed the search on land at nearby Milford Lake for a missing man, Pacey Nathaniel Staines. The search began Sunday evening but no discovery has been made.

On Sunday at approximately 9:00 pm, the Geary County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of a possible missing subject. The Sheriff’s Office received a call about a subject named Pacey Nathaniel Staines who had gone hunting in the area of the 5300 block of N. Dietrich Rd. and has not been heard from since.

Staines went to the 5300 block of N. Dietrich Rd. around 7:45 am on Sunday where he went into a wooded area alone. Last contact with Staines was at approximately 12:45 pm on Sunday.

Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 5300 block of N. Dietrich Rd. where they conducted a search of the area to locate Staines, but were unsuccessful. Geary County Sheriff Office Deputies remained in the area until members from the Geary County Sheriff’s Office, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Shawnee Fire Department, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Junction City Fire Department were able to initiate a search for Staines during the daylight hours.

As of now the search still continues for Staines. The Geary County Sheriff’s Office is asking if anyone has knowledge of his whereabouts to please contact the Geary County Sheriff’s Office at 785-238-2261.

Staines is described as a 24 year old white man who is approximately 5’6” weighing approximately 160 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes.

Geary County Sheriff Dan Jackson indicated authorities do not want&nbsp; members of the public arriving to help with&nbsp; the search. The weather&nbsp; is not conducive and it makes it harder on the dogs because there would be more scents.

Further information will be released as it becomes available.

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly today announced that Hollywood-based Pure Imagination Studios is partnering with Kansas State University’s Salina Campus, Salina Airport Authority, and the State of Kansas to build an advanced spatial computing studio and learning center, according to a media release.

The $41 million investment, which will create 101 new jobs, marks the largest investment in K-State’s Salina campus infrastructure.&nbsp;

The studio and learning center will be named the Kansas Advanced Immersive Research for Emerging Systems (K-AIRES). It will feature&nbsp;state-of-the-art equipment and immersive technologies, enabling the studio to transform the educational experience and establish new frontiers in education, aerospace, manufacturing, entertainment, defense, training, simulation, and other areas.&nbsp;

“K-AIRES shows the benefits of combining two of Kansas’ greatest resources – our universities and pro-business economy – to better prepare our students to join the modern workforce,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “This partnership is creating more of the high-tech jobs and exciting opportunities that will keep more of our graduates right here in Kansas.”&nbsp;

Construction on the 58,000-square-foot studio is expected to begin this fall. Approximately 150 workers will be hired during the construction phase.&nbsp;

“Pure Imagination’s selection of Kansas shows that our state’s investment in talent and leveraging higher education to support economic development is working,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “By following the Kansas Framework for Growth and pulling every lever we’ve got, we are creating ‘knowledge jobs’ right here in communities like Salina.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage to property&nbsp;

Just after 2p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 300 block of S. 3rd Street in Manhattan.

The Flint Hills Discovery Center reported unknown juveniles damaged chairs and concrete tiles on their back terrace balcony.

K-State cattle experts share advantages of composite sires in a commercial herd

Many commercial cattle producers wanting to leverage genetic diversity incorporate sires of different breeds as a way to get the benefit of heterosis, said the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Experts on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2023/08/18/avc-conference-summary-treatment-strategies-for-sick-cattle-on-summer-pastures-role-of-a-composite-sire-in-a-commercial-breeding-program/">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast.

“Heterosis is a combination that gives some vigor in areas of the genetic profile that are not highly heritable specifically in reproduction and health,” K-State veterinarian Brad White said.

Instead of rotating the breeds of sires, some producers are now using composite sires to accomplish the goal of a genetic advantage, according to K-State veterinarian Bob Larson.

“A composite bull has a specific combination of breeds,” Phillip Lancaster, K-State beef cattle nutritionist, explained. “Because it is a crossbred animal, it has heterosis advantages that can be passed through the cows to the offspring in a consistent manner.”

Additionally, some composite sires have Expected Progeny Difference data much like purebred cattle to help predict the offspring performance, Larson said.

“Composites with EPDs available can be an appealing option to a producer who wants to follow a simplified breeding system,” he said. “While we don’t get maximum heterosis from the composites, there is some genetic benefit.”

Along with that, genomic testing allows producers to learn in greater detail what the performance of that particular animal will be, according to Lancaster.

“Producers can select the individual that has a high level of heterosis within its genome to improve the hybrid vigor,” he said.

National Weather Service says more of the same in the forecast

Commercial air service to Manhattan Regional Airport has been delayed from September 6th to September 25th. This is due to the ongoing runway construction project.&nbsp;

American Airlines announced that they are contacting customers whose flights are affected. The flights will either be rebooked to Kansas City or refunded.&nbsp;

Manhattan Regional Airport Director Brandon Keazer said although most of the "hard" construction is done, there is still plenty of electrical work that needs to be finished.&nbsp;

American Airlines said even if construction is finished prior to the new date, they will not resume flights until September 25th.&nbsp;

Just after 5p.m. Saturday, police arrested 19-year-old Blake Konkright of Junction City on a Riley County District Court warrant for aggravated indecent liberties with a child, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. This warrant stems from a July 29, 2022, incident involving a now 8-year-old girl

 Konkright remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $40,000. Due to the nature of this crime, no further information will be released.

Police accuse Junction City man of sex crimes involving 8-year-old

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an accident that occurred just after 11a.m. Saturday and have made an arrest.

A 2013 Dodge Avenger was southbound at the intersection of S. Scenic and Skyway Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The car struck the curb of the roundabout, went airborne, and came to a rest on top of the raised barrier. Officers were advised on scene by witnesses the driver had run away from the scene after the crash leaving a 3-year-old child in the car. 

No serious injuries were reported. Officers were unable to initially locate the driver of the car. 

At approximately 8:00 p.m., the driver, Elijah McLeroy, 22, of Junction City was located near the Stagg Hill Golf Course and arrested on requested charges of interference with law enforcement, failure to render aid, no proof of motor vehicle liability, driving while suspended, and aggravated endangering a child. McLeroy remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $15,000.

Greg Doering, Kansas Farm Bureau For the first time in a long time, I won’t have to spend a Saturday defrosting an upright freezer in anticipation of the local meat processer calling to say our half steer is ready for pick up. Ideally this would have happened last fall, but I was really trading one hand-me-down freezer for another. And I’m a firm believer in beggars not being choosers. The old freezer should have been scrapped a long time ago. Instead, it lives on in my brother’s garage. When I say old, I really mean ancient. It originally resided in my childhood basement and then my parents’ garage before I somehow agreed to take possession of it about a decade ago. It’s kept everything cold all that time, usually by encapsulating anything on the top two shelves in varying layers of ice. Through some sort of magic, it’s replacement hasn’t developed the slightest hint of frost anywhere. Maybe it’s because the seal is fully intact. Or the auto defrost function is more than a marketing gimmick. Either way, when the locker calls, I won’t have to spend a day chipping out bundles of beef from a shelf. Hopefully the call comes sooner than later, too. We’re out of steaks and running low on hamburger and roast. I might actually have to cook the beef liver I haven’t exchanged for catfish yet. Soon the freezer will be fully stocked with all of that plus a couple of briskets, some flank steak for fajitas and short ribs for braising on a chilly Sunday afternoon. I’m looking forward to filling the freezer, but I’m not especially excited to get the bill this year. The processing fee shouldn’t be too bad, but the rancher’s cut for half a steer will be substantially more this year. This is one transaction that’s non-negotiable for me. The rancher knows the value of the steer, even in times where the number is not much higher than breakeven. Beef eaters have had a couple of years with decent prices. Now we’re going to see the other side of the market because drought has culled the cattle herd to its lowest level in about a decade. Provided demand doesn’t fall off too much, fewer cattle means less beef at higher prices. The contraction didn’t start overnight, and it won’t end quickly. Higher prices will provide plenty of incentive to rebuild the nation’s cattle herd, but that won’t start until ranchers begin retaining heifers, which will eventually have calves of their own. Unlike a new freezer, there’s no magical solution to grow cattle faster. It’s not fun, but the market will eventually sort everything out. It will rain again. Ponds will refill and pastures will recover. Ranchers will restock. I might grumble some when I get the final tally in a couple of weeks, but I can’t imagine any alternative. It’s a privilege to only fill a freezer once a year, and the convenience is still well worth the price. WABAUNSEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating six suspects after a weekend drug bust.

Just after 9a.m. Saturday, sheriff's deputies executed a residential search warrant at a residence located on Lake View Circle, Lake Wabaunsee, according to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's offe. 

Deputies found six individuals at the residence and they were arrested on scene without incident and transported to the county jail where they remain confined pending bond:

Amber M. Taylor, 28, of Alma, was booked on requested charges of Narcotics Possession w/prior conviction and paraphernalia.

Hollie D. West, 36, of Burlingame, is being held on requested charges of Narcotics Possession and&nbsp; paraphernalia.

&nbsp;Jager D. Simmons, 30, of Topeka, was arrested on requested charges of Narcotics use/possession and paraphernalia.

&nbsp;Jessica M. Lawrence, 32, of Eskridge, was arrested on requested charges of Narcotics Possession. 

Michael Hobsin, 32, of Topeka, was arrested on requested charges of Narcotics Possession and held on outstanding warrant for Failure to Appear. 

John M. Rose, 32, of Lawrence, was arrested on requested charges of Narcotics use / possession and  paraphernalia..

A 13-year-old child was located in the house, was made safe and taken to the Sheriff's Office as Child in Need of Care. The child has been transferred to the custody of his family.

● Air temperatures in the shade are expected to range from 100 to 111 degrees. Forecast highs are near or above the record, potentially being the longest heat wave of 100+ highs since 2011 (10 days at or above 100 degrees).

FORT RILEY – On Friday the Department of the Army announced the deployment of the 1st Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade to Europe in support of European Allies and partners.&nbsp;

The 1ID CAB will deploy to Europe to replace the 3rd Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade, as part of a regular rotation of forces to support the United States’ commitment to NATO Allies and partners.

The Combat Aviation Brigades’ most recent deployment was in early 2021, throughout areas of Eastern Europe, in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve.

“The 1st Combat Aviation Brigade has some of the Army's best Soldiers and Aviators. We have trained diligently over the past year in preparation for our deployment,” said Col. Chad Corrigan, the 1ID CAB commander. “The Demon Brigade is more than ready to deploy to support this mission and continue to strengthen our established relationships with our European Allies and partners.”

The Kansas Department of Transportation reports extended delays which can be expected during weekday evening commute time – typically 4:30 to 6 p.m. – and on weekends of Kansas State University home football games in Manhattan.</a>

The I-70 construction project is taking place in three phases along a 4-mile stretch in Junction City between Washington Street (Exit 296) and K-57 (Exit 300). During the current first phase of construction, traffic in both directions is reduced to one lane at a reduced speed.

In early September, the median crossovers will be switched to route all traffic to the eastbound side of I-70. Similar delays are expected to continue with traffic restricted to one lane in both directions and lower work zone speed limits in effect.

The two-lane configuration on this stretch of I-70 is scheduled to remain in place throughout the first phase of construction, which is scheduled for completion in December. The entirety of the multi-phase I-70 project is expected to be completed by December 2025, weather permitting.&nbsp;

Electronic message boards provide advance warning of delays due to traffic volume and will enhance safety.
