SALINA —The third on-campus residence hall facility has officially opened and is ready to house students for this upcoming academic year at&nbsp;<a>Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus,&nbsp;</a>according to a media release from the school.

The campus hosted its official grand opening ceremony on Aug. 15 for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/student-life/housing/rooms/" target="_blank">Earhart Hall</a>, a new 104-bed residence hall, which will significantly add to K-State Salina's on-campus housing options for students. The new facility was constructed to meet the demand for rising enrollment at the campus after five consecutive years of enrollment growth, and it will be at full capacity for the upcoming school year. Earhart Hall, named after Kansas aviator Amelia Earhart, will feature modern amenities and safety features for its residents, including a full kitchen space, lounge and study room on each floor. This new facility will help K-State Salina foster shared experiences and promote inclusivity with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/student-life/housing/learning-community/" target="_blank">Living Learning Community</a>&nbsp;programs that connect students living in the residence hall to other students who have similar academic interests.

The first Living Learning Community will commence for the 2023-2024 school year with first-time freshman students in the professional pilot program living in Earhart Hall. The campus's student life department hopes to be able to expand the Living Learning Community program to other degree options in the coming years. "Earhart Hall significantly impacts the type of student life services that our campus offers," said Kyle Chamberlin, associate dean of academic success and student affairs at K-State Salina. "To be able to implement some new programs, including our&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/student-life/housing/first-year-residency/" target="_blank">First-Year Residency Policy</a>, will bolster the experiences each student receives while living on campus and helps us grow a culture that allows our students to lead in making our campus an inclusive place for all." 3rd residence hall now open at K-State Salina

JUNCTION CITY - The country's top 8 college anglers will be launching from Milford Lake, September 29 - October 2nd for the Bassmaster College Classic Bracket presented by Lew's.

The anglers will be fishing for a spot in the 2024 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Toyota.

The&nbsp;2023 Bassmaster College Team of the Year&nbsp;—&nbsp;Easton Fothergill and Nick Dumke from the University of Montevallo automatically qualified to the College Classic and will compete against the Top 3 teams from the Strike King Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops in the individual, elimination-style tournament.

Also competing at Milford Lake are Hayden Marbut and Tucker Smith from Auburn University, Levi Mullins and Matthew Cummings from Bethel University and Brody Robison and Jack Alexander, also from the University of Montevallo.

For Tucker Smith, this is his second trip to the College Classic Bracket. He finished second by 3 ounces in 2021.

“The last time I was there, it really hurt my feelings,” Smith said of the narrow loss. “It will be good to be back and get another chance at it.”

Milford Lake is home to the Kansas state-record smallmouth, a 6-pound, 14-ounce fish caught in April 2010, and has hosted other Bassmaster tournaments, including the 2018 College Classic Bracket and the 2021 TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional.

The first day of the tournament will have all eight anglers competing individually to determine their seeding based on weight of their bag.

Days two and three will be the first two elimination days of the tournament which will be broadcast on FS1 starting at 8:00am CT on Saturday and 7:00am on Sunday.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly on Tuesday announced that agricultural exports reached $5.46 billion in 2022, the highest export total in decades. The Kansas agriculture industry has grown significantly since Governor Kelly took office; in 2019, Kansas had $3.8 billion in exports.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Once again, the top ag export for Kansas was red meat, which made up $2.1 billion or 38.9% of all agriculture exports. Second were cereals (including corn, wheat, and sorghum), and third was oil seed (primarily soybeans), making up 24.5% and 12.5% of total agricultural exports, respectively.&nbsp;

“Once again, we are shattering records to grow our economy and strengthen our ag industry,”&nbsp;said Governor Laura Kelly.&nbsp;“But even with these record exports, we aren’t taking anything for granted – which is why Secretary Beam and I are building relationships with international trading partners to ensure Kansas farmers and ranchers can continue to feed the world.”&nbsp;

Mexico was Kansas’ largest ag importer with $2.17 billion in 2022, Japan was the second largest with $781 million, and Canada was third with $594 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The $2.6 million project aims to create an education pipeline for underserved and place-bound students planning to become teachers in three Kansas school districts and three community colleges. The five-year grant, Project REFORM — an acronym for Redesigning Experiences Forging Opportunities for Recruitment and Mentorships — is funded through the Teacher Quality Partnership grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Elementary and Secondary Education. Project REFORM is a collaborative effort among the College of Education and College of Arts and Sciences at K-State, Topeka USD 501, Allen Community College, Independence USD 446, Independence Community College, Coffeyville USD 445, and Coffeyville Community College. "We are so proud to work with local educators to bring K-State's award-winning teacher education program to Coffeyville, Independence and Topeka," said Debbie Mercer, dean of the College of Education. "There are many amazing students who want to become teachers and contribute to their home communities, and we are excited to be the trusted higher education partner in this collaboration." The project is designed to reach underserved students and focuses on the three school districts, which serve a total of 16,272 students. Each partner will play a key role in supporting the reimagined community college and university teacher education pathways that streamline the educational journeys for students who are economically challenged or place-bound. Included in Project REFORM's main components is a clinical internship that extends the amount of time teacher candidates spend in classrooms from a semester to a full year.&nbsp;The project also includes a mentor teacher academy to provide additional support for the teacher candidates. KSU College of Ed. receives grant to recruit, mentor new teachers

MANHATTAN — The late Glenn and Claire Swogger of&nbsp;Topeka, Kansas, through an estate gift, have created a faculty chair and endowment fund for the&nbsp;<a href="https://artsci.k-state.edu/primary/" target="_blank">primary texts certificate program</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University. The primary texts program is multidisciplinary and housed in the department of political science in the&nbsp;<a href="https://artsci.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Arts and Sciences</a>. Through primary texts, students learn from original documents, not the summarizations that occur in textbooks. They learn to research, analyze and interpret original works for themselves — the basis of a classical liberal arts education. The Glenn and Claire Swogger Chair in Primary Texts has been awarded to Laurie Johnson, professor of political science and director of the primary texts certificate. She is the author of seven books and numerous book chapters and articles. Most of her work has involved developing a thorough understanding and critique of classical liberal theory and includes works on Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and Tocqueville. Glenn Swogger was a firm believer in the power of an education with a heavy emphasis in primary texts. He received such an education as an undergraduate at the University of Chicago. He went on to get his doctorate in medicine at Case Western University in Cleveland. He served in the U.S. Navy and later practiced psychiatry at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. He and his wife, Claire, believed in giving back and supported education and the arts throughout their lives. The primary texts program is multidisciplinary and housed in the department of political science in the&nbsp;<a href="https://artsci.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Arts and Sciences</a>. Through primary texts, students learn from original documents, not the summarizations that occur in textbooks. They learn to research, analyze and interpret original works for themselves — the basis of a classical liberal arts education. The Glenn and Claire Swogger Chair in Primary Texts has been awarded to Laurie Johnson, professor of political science and director of the primary texts certificate. She is the author of seven books and numerous book chapters and articles. Most of her work has involved developing a thorough understanding and critique of classical liberal theory and includes works on Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and Tocqueville. Glenn Swogger was a firm believer in the power of an education with a heavy emphasis in primary texts. He received such an education as an undergraduate at the University of Chicago. He went on to get his doctorate in medicine at Case Western University in Cleveland. He served in the U.S. Navy and later practiced psychiatry at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. He and his wife, Claire, believed in giving back and supported education and the arts throughout their lives. Sons of the American Legion Fundraiser Breakfast for the J. C. / Geary County Food Pantry will be held Saturday, Aug. 19th from 7-10 a.m. at the American Legion Post #45 at 201 E. 4th Street in Junction City.&nbsp;

According to John Hagerty the menu will include biscuits &amp; gravy, eggs, sausage, ham, tater tots, orange juice and coffee. The cost will be $10 for adults and $7 for children.&nbsp;

There will be dine-in, carry out or delivery available. The breakfast is open to the public.

Following the news that Country Stampede, which has been headquartered in recent years in Topeka, needs to&nbsp; search for a new location there is interest on the part of the Geary County Convention &amp; Visitor's Bureau Director Donna Price. She is interested in possibly seeing the country music festival come to Geary County.&nbsp; Price said, "I think it opens up a lot of possibilities, possibly for us or some of our neighbors that we can also work with."

Price noted that Country Stampede was located near Manhattan for many many years at Tuttle Creek. "I think that we've also got some great spots that they would fit out at Milford State Park or Corps of Engineers." 

Price added that she plans to look into the matter further. "It's a huge event, absolutely huge. The whole community basically needs to be involved in volunteering for it. But it brings in so many country western singers that are big names. That will bring them in." Price noted that Country Stampede used to bring in thousands of people at Tuttle Creek.&nbsp;

Price thinks the lake environment would be wonderful but she knows there would be a lot of hoops to jump through. "There's other lakes that we could very well be in competition with. So it will just depend on the RFP's and what they look like and where we go from here." She plans to try and find the right person to talk to on the topic and then proceed from there.

Country Stampede recently announced their intent to search for a new site in 2024 and in the future. They planned to contact neighboring communities and entities including Manhattan to determine interest in hosting the event.&nbsp;

JUNCTION CITY, Kan.&nbsp;– Geary County Schools USD 475 is establishing a National Elementary Honor Society chapter in its elementary schools this school year. “I’m really excited that USD 475 schools are going to be able to have the National Elementary Honor Society this year. By having this in all of our elementary schools, our students are going to learn more about what role they can play in making our community a better place to work and live,” said Jennifer Black, Geary County Schools USD 475 Director of Elementary Education. NEHS will provide Geary County Schools USD 475 fourth and fifth grade students a place to develop and practice their skills for service and leadership not only in the community, but also at their school. By adding the elementary chapter, the district will now have a National Honor Society at elementary, middle and high school. “Geary County Schools USD 475 strives to achieve the Kansas CAN award for civic engagement through activities that connect with Junction City, Fort Riley, Grandview and the Milford communities. The National Elementary Honor Society chapters will work towards service-learning and school-wide service day projects to achieve this building goal,” said Black. NEHS promotes the four pillars of scholarship, responsibility, service and leadership. Through exploration of each pillar, student members, who will be recognized for their accomplishments, learn many valuable life lessons, including the importance of personal responsibility and giving back to the community.&nbsp; Each elementary school will have an advisor and committee to help determine who is selected for the National Honor Society. To be nominated, students must have at least a standard grade of a three, demonstrate service to the community and record a 95% attendance rate, while having no behavior referrals. The application and ultimate selection will be based on the four pillars.&nbsp; Each elementary school will develop its own by-laws and timeline for selection. Once students are selected, they will be inducted into the chapter.&nbsp;&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 11:30a.m. Sunday in Manhattan.

A 2006 Ford Taurus driven by Heavenly Feniello, 46, of Herington, had hydroplaned while driving down the hill in the 700 Ehlers Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity.&nbsp;

The car left the roadway and struck a manhole cover. EMS transported Feniello to Via Christi for treatment of head, hand, arm, and leg injuries.

Jackie Mundt, Pratt&nbsp;County farmer and rancher A strange and vivid memory from my pre-teen world view was thinking after high school life was pretty much over. It makes me laugh and shake my head a little to think about how naive and small my world was because I couldn’t imagine anything worthwhile in life beyond high school. Even as a senior in high school if you had asked what life would look like in 20 years, I don’t think I would have guessed correctly about anything personal or professional. I am happy to report that life has been bigger, better and crazier than I would have imagined; I attended and earned degrees from two universities, have lived at 16 addresses in six states, traveled to 17 countries around the world, worked for 11 companies, made my wildest dreams come true and learned what it takes to achieve greatness at something. There have also been hard times, failures and plenty of stress, but I learned from it all. The best part of my life in the past two decades is the friends I have made along the way. I won’t extol the many virtues of my friends because we all think our friends are the best, but I know I have been blessed with a tribe of people who share my interests, values and ambitions. It took leaving my home town to find most of these people. My graduating class had 52 kids in it. It was a given that you were friends with everyone more out of proximity than commonality. I knew some of my classmates much better than others, but I knew them all and considered them friends. Together, for better or worse, we spent 13 years learning, growing and playing. This fall we have plans for a 20 year class reunion, and I am honestly excited. It may be a case of distance and time making my heart grow fonder but I can’t wait to hear about where their paths have taken them and who they have become. Even if I didn’t get much choice in my classmates, they still hold a special place in my heart; we lived too much life together not to care. I know my perspective on class reunions is not shared by all people. It makes me a little sad to hear someone say they will never attend a reunion. I have never understood people who want nothing to do with their past or the others who feel pressure to look fabulously successful for a reunion. The mean girls and rivalries of TV and movie high school reunions seem to be inflated. I believe in my heart that most people at a reunion are genuinely excited to see each other to catch up and share memories from their time together. Maybe that’s all it really takes for a great reunion: people choosing to believe the best in their former classmates. We can all celebrate success, give an encouraging word of support, or reminisce about the memories of our youth. For one day, we can rekindle relationships that helped us become who we are today, be grateful for our time together and enjoy the grace of time passed. I am choosing to believe in the goodwill and love of all friends, even if they aren’t the ones we chose. RILEY COUNTY&nbsp; —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged sex assault.

On Sunday, police took 40-year-old Brandon Cameron of Manhattan&nbsp; into custody&nbsp; following a report he allegedly broke into a home and committed a sexual assault Saturday night, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Just before midnight Saturday, the Riley County Communications Center received a 911 call from a 26-year-old woman reporting a burglary in the 1300 block of Flint Hills Place in Manhattan.

Officers discovered a sexual assault had taken place during the burglary. After further investigation and assistance from the victim, Cameron was subsequently identified as the suspect.

At 4:30a.m. Sunday, police located him in the 2700 block of N. Brookglen Circle in Manhattan on requested charges of aggravated burglary and rape. RILEY COUNTY&nbsp; —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged sex assault.On Sunday, police took 40-year-old Brandon Cameron of Manhattan&nbsp; into custody&nbsp; following a report he allegedly broke into a home and committed a sexual assault Saturday night, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.Just before midnight Saturday, the Riley County Communications Center received a 911 call from a 26-year-old woman reporting a burglary in the 1300 block of Flint Hills Place in Manhattan.Officers discovered a sexual assault had taken place during the burglary. After further investigation and assistance from the victim, Cameron was subsequently identified as the suspect.At 4:30a.m. Sunday, police located him in the 2700 block of N. Brookglen Circle in Manhattan on requested charges of aggravated burglary and rape. A 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Sierra Davis, 23, of Fort Riley was traveling in the 6800 Block of Vinton School Road, according to the Riley Police Department activity report.

The driver&nbsp;lost control while navigating a bend in the road and the motorcycle overturned. EMS transported Davis to Irwin Army Community Hospital for treatment of torso and neck injuries.

Football practice begins Monday afternoon at Junction City High School with Randall Zimmerman starting his 30th season as Blue Jay head coach. "We are very much looking forward to getting going."

Zimmerman has been a coach for 39 years overall with stops at Sacred Heart in Salina and in Phillipsburg before coming to Junction City. He still enjoys being involved in athletics. " I do. I love every minute of it. Opened up school on Friday, just good to&nbsp; be around young people and the energy that they bring. I've got a lot of years in me, I hope." The coach added that he is hoping to be in Junction City for a long time.

The Blue Jays host the Hays Indians in the season opener on Sept.1. Other regular season home games on the schedule include Bishop Carroll, Washburn Rural and Emporia. There will be road trips to Dodge City, McPherson, Manhattan and Topeka High.

The Blue Jays will culminate the first week of practice on Saturday with a practice from 8 - 10 a.m., and then Future Blue Jays for K - 6 youth from 10:30 - 11, followed by a 7th-8th grade practice run by the high school staff from 11 - to noon. From noon to 1 p.m. there will be 7th and 8th graders practicing on the east end of the field at Blue Jay Stadium and 4th through 6th graders on the west end of the field. There will also be a family picnic in the stadium from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The Blue Jay football squad will participate in a three-team Jamboree hosted by Shawnee Heights on Friday Aug. 25th. Washburn Rural will also be in attendance there.

GEARY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 8:30p.m. Friday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by David Dale Coulson, 63, Wakefield, was eastbound on Kansas 82 five miles east of Wakefield.

The Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel (JCARSP) met at 9:00 AM on Friday August 11 at the Zion United Church of Christ to celebrate 60 years as an organization. JCARSP members are retired teachers, educators, cooks, nurses, paraeducators, administrators and their spouses who want to continue their life of service to fellow members, their active colleagues, and the community. Hosts were Susan Kamphaus and Karen Malec.&nbsp;

Joe and Sheila Markley gave an update on the remodeling project and shows coming to the C.L. Hoover Opera House. Kell Smalley from Association Member Benefits Advisors (AMBA) shared information about benefits to JCARSP and Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel members (KARSP).

JCARSP members showed their financial support by donating to the work done by USD 475’s Windy Hancock. Windy coordinates the district’s McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance program for students who are defined as being homeless in accordance with that Act.

Nita Miller, JCARSP Secretary and Community Service Hours Coordinator said that “Retired school personnel continue to give of themselves and their time even after retirement from the school district. The unit of JCARSP was also recognized by the state association. During 2022-23 JCARSP members volunteered 6,568 hours in the community. If volunteers had been paid at the rate of $31.80, the value of service hours would have been $208,862.40. Collette Matthews was recognized by KARSP for her more than 900 hours of volunteer work.”

The next meeting of the JCARSP will be Friday, October 13 at Noon in the Zion United Church of Christ. That meal will be catered by Thomas’ Taste of Chicago and will be coordinated by Sheila Ritchie, Treasurer. Donations will be made to the Geary County Food Pantry/Wheels of Hope. Any retired school personnel who is interested in learning more about the organization may contact Dr. Ferrell Miller, JCARSP President at fmiller3@cox.net.

Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel Celebrates 60 Years

TOPEKA - On Thursday afternoon, Country Stampede posted to social media and emailed festival-goers of the need to search for a new venue for 2024 and future years.

In 2019, the festival moved from Tuttle Creek State Park in Manhattan to Topeka.

On Friday, the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce responded to the news the Country Stampede was looking for a new home.

" Country Stampede is a unique and important part of Manhattan’s history."

"Thousands of people traveled to Manhattan over the two decades the event was held annually at Tuttle Creek State Park to see some of the most successful country music artists in the business."

"The economic impact on our community was extremely important and Visit Manhattan and the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce played a significant role in the ongoing success of the event."

"The move to Topeka in 2019 coincided with a change in ownership and a change in strategic direction of the event."

"We, along with tourism groups across the region, received a request for proposal (RFP) from entities representing Country Stampede to determine our community’s interest in hosting the festival again."

"While we are always excited for opportunities to attract world class events to Manhattan, the logistics of holding such an event requires a significant commitment from the community."

"We will be working with our regional partners including the City of Manhattan and Tuttle Creek State Park officials to determine how we develop the best Manhattan response to this opportunity."

Junction City Public Works has confirmed that there are multiple water main breaks throughout Junction City. Areas include Navajo, Wyatt/Sumner, 700 Block of W Chestnut, Wildcat Lane, Spruce/Countryside, and Bunker Hill/Spruce. There is also a service line that was hit on Navajo. 

There were multiple crews working Friday morning to repair the water main breaks on W Chestnut and Wildcat Lane. People will experience low to no water in the 700-800 block of Chestnut and Wildcat Lane. The remainder of the water main breaks will continue repairs Friday afternoon. Service will be restored as soon as possible.

Fort Riley has announced via social media that you can expect traffic delays. Beginning August 21, roadwork is scheduled to begin on three bridges across the installation. Henry Drive bridges over the Kansas River and the railroad tracks, and Huebner Road bridge over Three Mile Creek.

During construction, traffic will be reduced to one-lane controlled with either flagmen or stop lights. Expect delays and plan accordingly. Williston Point will be closed to all traffic north of the roundabout at Huebner.&nbsp;&nbsp;
