KDOT provided an opportunity this week to review concepts for a proposed Taylor Road interchange off I-70 on the southwest edge of Junction City.

The project is in the discovery phase. The aging bridge over I-70 needs to be replaced&nbsp; and with that possibility comes an opportunity to increase access and encourage additional economic development in the area. The project is also studying local roadway connections from the potential I-70 interchange to Srauss Boulevard that may be completed by local entities.

The discovery phase is on track to be completed by the end of the summer.

Overall project development could take three to four years.

Community members are updated on a potential Taylor Road project

Junction City Manager Allen Dinkel told city commissioners this week that the Courtyard By Marriott is scheduled to be put up for sale. Officials heard about this development but have not yet completed gathering all the details. "We're still looking as far as what happened as far as the city and county commitment back in 2003, I believe, when there was a bonded indebtedness. " The project was funded by the city, county and CVB. Final debt payment is scheduled this year.

Dinkel noted also, that the parking lot in front of the convention center is owned by the city.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged aggravated battery in the Riley County Jail 

Just after 6:00 p.m. Thursday, a 25- and 28-year-old male inmates&nbsp; reported inmate Shawn Samuelson, 22, of Manhattan, hit the 25-year-old victim in the head and inmates Travell Hairston, 32, and Jarman Morgan, 45, both of Manhattan punched the 28-year-old victim multiple times, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Both victims were transported to Via Christi for treatment of lacerations. Samuelson, Hairston, and Morgan face additional requested charges of aggravated battery and remain confined in the Riley County Jail.

DICKINSON COUNTY —A Kansas pilot avoided injury after an accident just before 5p.m. Wednesday in Dickinson County.

A 1994 Bell helicopter piloted by 42-year-old Samuel Sutton of Topeka was eastbound spraying a corn field at 2750 Rain Road north of Chapman, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The helicopter struck a&nbsp; power line and went down. There were no injuries.

Fleming has worked in healthcare for more than 20 years. During the pandemic she worked at the VA Hospital in Oklahoma City. Fleming has worked in mental health care within medical environments and has an extensive background in administration and business management.

Museum sets next STEAM Saturday event

RILEY COUNTY —Improperly stored fireworks debris is being blamed for a rural Kansas fire.

Just after midnight Wednesday, the Riley County Fire District #1 was called out to the report of a structure fire at <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/cGuJRhcT1MGpdoHq8">12261 Walnut Creek Road </a>in northern Riley County, according to a media release.

First arriving crews found a garage fully engulfed in fire, which had spread to the attic space of the home. Volunteer firefighters were able to stop the fire from causing further damage to the home.

Crews successfully extinguished the blaze and stayed on scene for several hours to check on hot spots and complete mop-up of the burned area. Four occupants and a cat were evacuated safely from the home, no injuries were reported.

Fire crews determined the cause of the fire to be leftover firework debris stored in a trash bin inside the garage. The fire caused extensive damage to the structure and contents, including two vehicles, tools and several pieces of equipment.

The total estimated loss was not available at the time of the media release by Riley County Fire District #1.

The pickup passed a 2016 Ram 1500 driven Herbert Havens, 19, of Zanesville, Ohio on the shoulder. This caused the two vehicles to collide. 

The Ram then slid off the road into a guard rail.&nbsp; EMS transported a female passenger of the Ram to Via Christi for treatment of neck pain. 

RCPD issued Danley&nbsp; a citation for improper driving on a laned roadway and reckless driving.&nbsp; There were no other injuries reported.

There will be a Junction City community blood drive on Thursday, July 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday, July 21 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. as the Municipal Building downtown.

Community blood drive is scheduled in July

<a>Beginning Monday, July 10, the Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin the first of three phases for a pavement replacement project on&nbsp;I-70&nbsp;at Junction City in Geary County.&nbsp;</a><a></a><a>The project includes replacing pavement for about four miles of&nbsp;I-70&nbsp;between Washington Street at exit 296 and K-57 at exit 300.</a>

During the first part of phase one, traffic on eastbound&nbsp;I-70&nbsp;will be reduced to one lane at a reduced speed as the roadway receives a temporary overlay.

During the second part of phase one, about a mile of eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane as median crossovers will carry westbound traffic through construction in a head-to-head configuration via the eastbound lanes.

Ramps will be closed at times to allow for reconstruction of the ramp pavement. Local traffic will be directed to use alternate routes.

Wildcat Construction Co. Inc. and Subsidiaries, of Wichita, is the prime contractor and has scheduled phase one of this $30 million project to be completed by December 2023. All three phases of the project to be completed by December 2025, weather permitting.

<a>Beginning Monday, July 10, the Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin the first of three phases for a pavement replacement project on&nbsp;I-70&nbsp;at Junction City in Geary County.&nbsp;</a><a></a><a>The project includes replacing pavement for about four miles of&nbsp;I-70&nbsp;between Washington Street at exit 296 and K-57 at exit 300.</a>During the first part of phase one, traffic on eastbound&nbsp;I-70&nbsp;will be reduced to one lane at a reduced speed as the roadway receives a temporary overlay.During the second part of phase one, about a mile of eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane as median crossovers will carry westbound traffic through construction in a head-to-head configuration via the eastbound lanes.Ramps will be closed at times to allow for reconstruction of the ramp pavement. Local traffic will be directed to use alternate routes.Wildcat Construction Co. Inc. and Subsidiaries, of Wichita, is the prime contractor and has scheduled phase one of this $30 million project to be completed by December 2023. All three phases of the project to be completed by December 2025, weather permitting.

I-70 pavement replacement to begin at Junction City

This is day 8 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Kansas wheat harvest is 46% complete, well behind 80% last year, and behind 63% for the five-year average, according to the official statistics provided by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service in its crop progress report for the week ending July 2, 2023. Winter wheat conditions rated 51% very poor to poor, 33% fair and 16% good to excellent.&nbsp;

Hot temperatures through July 4th meant farmers were in the fields ahead of the widespread showers that moved in on the evening of the July 4th holiday.&nbsp;

In Ness County at the D.E. Bondurant Grain Company, Gary Gantz said during the 4th of July weekend, several producers were cutting wheat. Friday and Saturday were particularly busy days, especially for the Riverside location. Gantz predicted harvest will continue into late July.

Gantz stated farmers in the area who had not terminated their wheat were seeing slightly better yields than what they had initially thought. Yields ranged from 25 to 35 bushels per acre, with decent test weights and high proteins in the 12.5 to 14 percent range.&nbsp;

Last year, during the 2022 wheat harvest, which was another dry year for the Kansas wheat crop, Gantz recalled they only received about 50% of their normal amount of wheat. With the already dry conditions following 2022, the 2023 crop was off to less than ideal conditions that continued into harvest. This harvest, the elevator is seeing a mere 25% of normal wheat quantity. About 40-50% of the planted 2023 wheat crop in the area was abandoned. Although this wheat crop was very disappointing, with these late rains, Gantz noted the elevator remains optimistic for currently growing fall crops. One such rain event brought as much as three inches of rain.

Derek Sawyer, a Kansas Wheat Commission board member located in McPherson County, reports that he wrapped up his 2023 wheat harvest on July 1st, having started on June 15th. He adds that 85-90% of his county has also finished their harvest for this year.&nbsp;

“I had some really bad double crop that averaged 20 bushels per acre,” Sawyer said, noting his overall crop average was 48 bushels per acre.

An outstanding variety for Sawyer was WestBred 4699. His protein was 14 percent, with test weights in the 58-60 pound range, just slightly below average. There was very little abandonment in the area, about 5-10%, due to the challenges of the spring freeze and hail. In addition to freeze damage and hail being an issue, thin wheat stands caused weed pressure to be more prevalent.&nbsp;

Kendall Poland, of the Sublette Co-op in Haskell County, said harvest has just really gotten started. Only one of his farmers has been able to get into the fields after these recent rains. The wheat crop is shaping up to be very minimal so far - almost 95% of dryland wheat acres were abandoned in the area. With wheat harvest only having just begun on Tuesday, June 27, and more rain in the forecast, wheat harvest might extend much further into the calendar than what anyone is used to.

Despite the slow start to harvest, Poland remarked how much of a blessing these rains have been to this parched area of Kansas. Hailstorms have torn through the area causing damage to corn and cotton acres. Although the hail wasn’t large, there was a lot of it.

With moisture still persisting, many parts of the state that have wheat left to cut will be delayed a few more days. Check back on July 10 as the Kansas Wheat crew continues to share results from the field with the next harvest report.&nbsp;

Day 8, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A Kansas man is hospitalized in critical condition after he was struck by lightning last weekend.

Just after 7pm. June 30, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call for a man struck by lightning in the 5600 block of Lewis Wilson Road, Wamego, Pottawatomie County, Kansas, according to a media release.

Pottawatomie County Deputies and a Louisville Fire fighter arrived at the scene and found Jennifer Campbell administering CPR to a man later identified as 37-year-old Matthew Campbell&nbsp; of rural Wamego.

 It was reported that Matthew had been struck by lightning while walking back from the pasture.  Matthew's wife, Jennifer Campbell was along with him when he was struck.  She reported being knocked to the ground by the lightning strike as well.  Jennifer did not report any injuries.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged theft in Manhattan.

Just after 2:30p.m. Tuesday, officers&nbsp;filed a report for theft in the 1400 block of Anderson Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 20-year-old man reported an unknown suspect took his clothes from a dryer at a laundromat. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $580.
