State University's McCain Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30.

Last appearing before a sold-out crowd at McCain during the 2015-2016
 season, Regan is one of the most respected comedians in the country. 
Having built his 30-plus year career on the strength of his material 
alone, Vanity Fair calls him "The funniest stand-up alive." Regan

Downtown Junction City will be host to the International Food Tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 6.

The tour will be the kickoff event for the Main Street Market, and several vendors will be on hand.

Passports will provide you a sample from every vendor tent — $10/per adult and $5/per child 12 and under up to the day of the event. 

There will be a limited number of passports available on the day of and will increase to $15/per adult and $10/per child 12 and under.&nbsp;

Junction City International Food Tour will be downtown in May

By JACKIE MUNDT Pratt County farmer and rancher Living in a small town is wonderful. Knowing people in the grocery store, the space and security for children to play in parks or yards and a shared sense of ownership with your neighbors to help and make life better for each other are some of the things that make this life sweet. Smaller usually feels like an advantage in rural communities, except there are fewer people to help financially support the cost of community resources. Farmers and other landowners cover a large portion of the communities’ financial needs through property tax payments to support local municipalities, schools, hospitals and other taxing entities. Incredibly rural communities often have a choice between shockingly high taxes or a glaring lack of important community services. Bond issues are a way for the community to declare their opinion of whether some of the taxes are worth it. This spring, our school district like many other across the state, has a bond issue on the upcoming ballot. The school is asking our community to make improvements to existing facilities to accommodate unmet and future needs. Bond measures are really asking whether you and your neighbors want to join together and spend money out of your own pocket on an investment in the community. All investments should be considered carefully by weighing the cost against the risk and reward. In our ultra-polarized world, some people will quickly jump to one side or the other of this issue. Some will oppose the measure because the cost is too high or they believe the improvements are not needed. Others are strongly in favor of all investments in education and community improvements regardless of the cost. This community has been fortunate to have had citizens who balanced fiscal responsibility with a vision for a community that is a great place to live. As I look around, it is easy to see all the places where people have made investments of time and money to make our community great. I often marvel about how people have been proactive and really cared about the future of our community. It’s not like that everywhere. I appreciate the past investments and feel a sense of obligation and desire to do my best for the future of this place.&nbsp; Personally, I am typically pro-investment because community growth and improvements to our schools and other facilities make for a high quality of life that attracts new people and helps us all to thrive. However, the idea of more taxes pushes me to temper that reaction with an evaluation of the project before deciding my stance. It is my responsibility as a voter and community member to evaluate the proposed bond against my own desires and the needs of our community. The vote is a few weeks away, and I have been investigating the proposal, discussing it with my fellow voters and seeking knowledge to fill gaps in my understanding. If you have a bond issue in your community, I hope you will take the time to evaluate what is being asked and if the solution is the right course of action. Getting to the decision right can have a big impact on the future of your community. I haven’t made a decision on the bond issue yet but am confident I will walk into the polling booth as an informed voter with the best interest our community in mind. I also have faith that my fellow community members have the same feelings of responsibility and ownership of the decision they make. Manhattan —Investigators say improperly discarding of smoking material caused a fire at a home in Manhattan.

Just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire at 156 North Dartmouth, according to assistant Fire Chief Mike Kaus.

First responders found the two-story home with heavy fire on the back of the residence.&nbsp; The fire extended into the attic space and was extinguished within 30 minutes.&nbsp; Riley County EMS evaluated one occupant for smoke inhalation.

&nbsp;The residents evacuated prior to the fire department's arrival. Loss is estimated at $25,000 to contents and $75,000 to the structure. 

The owners are listed as Tareque Nasser and Wahida Akhtar of the residence.&nbsp; The fire cause is accidental due to discarded smoking materials.&nbsp; A reminder to discard smoking materials in an approved container filled with sand or water.

Improperly discarded smoking material caused house fire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In the last 17 years, the University of Kansas men's basketball program has entered the NCAA Tournament with an average seed of 1.6.&nbsp;

Bill Self's teams have won two national championships (2008, 2022) and played for another (2012) in that span.

The nine-time conference coach of the year said winning is different when fans expect titles every year.

"Winning is a relief," Self said. "Winning becomes a relief and losing is a disaster."

<a href="https://www.hutchcc.edu/dillon-lecture-series">Self spoke in the Hutchinson Sports Arena Tuesday for the Dillon Lecture Series (DLS) about what it takes to be successful</a>. He also addressed how to achieve more after a goal is reached.

Self asked for the Wichita State fans to make some noise. A few did.&nbsp;

He asked for the K-State fans to make some noise. The crowd got a little louder.&nbsp;

As the applause faded, Self told those fans they could kindly leave.&nbsp;

All joking aside, Self praised the success of not just Kansas teams, but all collegiate teams because "Iron sharpens iron."

"It raises the bar for everybody," Self said.&nbsp;"We should be great because someone else is good."

Self is the sixth member of the Naismith Hall of Fame to speak for the DLS, now in its 42nd season.

He outlined what it took to be successful with so much pressure. 

"Show up," Self said. "Be fully present. Be a caretaker and contributor."

Self noted he is the chief caretaker of the most prestigious and storied program in the nation, but urged attendees to apply that same drive to their every-day job and life.

"When's the last time you were just present?" Self asked. "When was the last time you were at the dinner table and didn't look at your phone?"

Self outlined the culture change at KU that led to championships and added success.&nbsp;"The less we have to coach, the better we'll be," Self said of his teams that have been player-led.

He said many of those same concepts can be utilized in daily life.&nbsp;

"Add fun to what's going on," Self said. "We've got to enjoy each other. We have to energize a place."

"It's our responsibility to make sure we add value to everyone else," Self noted.

"Have a culture to make everyone better," Self said.

"Acknowledge what you don't know. Become a sponge," Self said to the youth in attendance.

According to Self, the great Henry Iba was a sponge. As an assistant at Oklahoma State, Self was in charge of chauffeuring Iba.

Self once made a comment about another coach that was not positive. "Can you believe this coach did that?" Self asked Iba.

"Let me tell you something," Iba responded. "A broken clock is right twice a day."

Self implored the youth of the audience to listen to their parents.

"Even as a young person, you might think your parents aren't nearly as smart as you," Self said, but he once again used Iba's example of the clock: It's still right two times a day.

📷 KU's Bill Self: 'Winning is a relief'

BROWN COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on multiple charges after a traffic stop.

Just before 5p.m. April 15, a sheriff's deputy initiated a traffic stop for speeding on US 36 near Horned Owl Road, according to Sheriff John Merchant.

The deputy spoke with a female driver less than 18 years of age and it was discovered that she did not possess a valid drivers license. 

A Brown County K-9 arrived and Carla alerted on the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was conducted and items of evidence were seized such as an open container of whiskey, methamphetamine, marijuana, syringes, fentanyl, paraphernalia, scales etc. 

An investigation following the search resulted in the arrest of the passenger in the vehicle, Camden Hubbard 42 of Wamego.

Hubbard was booked on requested Charges of Aggravated Human Trafficking victim &gt;14, Aggravated Child Endangerment &lt;18, Contributing to a Child's Misconduct, Conspiracy Sexual Exploitation of a Child, Use Communication Device to Facilitate Felony, Transport Open Container, Improper Vehicle Registration, Possession of Opiate, Possession of Stimulant, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He remains in custody, according to online jail records.

The case will be forwarded to the Brown County attorney for review.

Fire risk Tuesday with precipitation on the way this week

Burn bans remain in effect in Geary and Riley counties as dry, windy conditions continue in the Flint Hills.

Twin Valley has begun installations in Zones 3-4 of its Junction City fiber expansion project, making progress on its commitment to bring fiber to the community’s 22,000 residents. The company has released an estimated timeline for the next 10 construction zones, allowing those customers to be installed with up to 2 Gbps symmetrical internet by fall. Another 12 zones are in the queue, and mainline construction will begin on those zones this fall.

“It’s important for those interested in service to sign up online or by phone in advance, so we can increase efficiency and connect homes and businesses as quickly as possible,” said Scott Leitzel, Twin Valley VP of Operations. “Waiting to sign up until mainline construction is complete will delay installation.”

In Zones 1-4, crews have completed mainline construction and pre-registered installations are underway. For those who sign up in these zones going forward, Twin Valley’s construction coordinator will schedule a construction team to bury a fiber optic line or “drop” from the mainline to the home or business. This is usually scheduled out about 10 business days, because machinery and a crew have to be scheduled and relocated to the address. Following the drop, crews will splice and test the fiber connection, and a technician will be scheduled to install service.&nbsp;

For the upcoming zones, the best time to sign up is before&nbsp;construction begins in the zone. To increase efficiency and reduce the disruption to a neighborhood, crews will bury mainline fiber and fiber “drops” along the way to homes and businesses that are signed up for service. Following mainline construction and drops, other crews will splice and test the fiber-optic cables, fusing together thin strands of glass. The final step is installing service at the home or business.

Due to various factors, such as high cost of construction, select zones are under evaluation for future fiber expansion. Residents and businesses can influence whether we build these areas by registering their address online or by phone. Areas of greatest demand will be considered first.

Twin Valley recently received the Eldon L. Hoyle Award for their economic development contributions in Junction City, presented by the Junction City Chamber of Commerce. The company is investing more than $20 million into the community to provide fiber internet service to Junction City businesses and residents.

With sustained winds of 10 to 25 mph and gusting to 35 mph, the National Weather Service in Topeka is warning of a very high fire danger Monday and Tuesday.

There is also a chance of severe storms beginning Tuesday night. There is a chance of showers or thunderstorms through Friday across the Flint Hills.

The high temperature Tuesday and Wednesday is expected to be in the mid-80s, with a high of just 60 degrees by Friday.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged domestic violene.

On Friday, police arrested 32-year-old Luis Martinez of Topeka on two Riley County District Court warrants in connection to August and October 2020 occasions of domestic violence on a 38-year-old woman, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Martinez is being held on requested charges of two counts each of kidnapping, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated assault, criminal damage to property, and domestic battery, and one count each of aggravated battery, robbery, aggravated intimidation of a victim, criminal threat, and criminal restraint. 

Martinez remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $150,000.

This warrant stems from Everett's failure to appear in court for an original arrest of criminal damage to property after it was reported he spray-painted a 39-year-old woman's trash can and yard, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Everett was issued a total bond of $20,000 and is no longer confined at the time of this report

The "Community Cares Chest" has been created using items that were donated from the "Feed the Children" organization but have gone beyond the shelf-life for sales, but remain usable.

The Greater Manhattan Community Foundation has received truckloads of items to be distributed throughout the region.

Dustin Thornton, a commercial lender with Exchange Bank, is part of the Leadership Manhattan program and reached out to the director of the Geary County Flint Hills Food Pantry, Debbie Johns, to determine the need within the Geary County community for the personal care and household products.

Some of the items include: personal care items, household cleaning items, books and other miscellaneous items.

Products are available for individuals in Geary County at the Geary County Food Pantry.

MANHATTAN — Hattie Polson, junior in agricultural economics and global food systems leadership, Vermillion, is Kansas State University's 38th <a href="https://www.truman.gov/">Harry S. Truman scholar</a>. The
 Truman scholarship is a highly competitive national award that provides
 up to $30,000 for graduate studies, leadership training, career 
counseling, and special internship and fellowship opportunities in the 
federal government. Truman scholars demonstrate outstanding leadership 
potential, a commitment to a career in government or the nonprofit 
sector, and academic excellence.&nbsp;

According to the Truman Foundation, 62 scholarships were awarded this
 year from a candidate pool of 705 students nominated by 275 colleges 
and universities.

"As the university's newest Truman scholar, Hattie is continuing 
K-State's tradition of excellence and embodying our land-grant mission 
through her passion for public service and global development," said 
K-State President Richard Linton. "She is a promising future leader, and
 we are thrilled that she has received this well-deserved honor."&nbsp;

Polson, who is also earning a certificate in nonprofit leadership 
studies, plans to attend the 2024 Truman Foundation's Summer Institute 
program, where she will get hands-on experience working in public 
service through internships at government agencies and nonprofit 
organizations. She hopes to work for the Foreign Agricultural Service of
 the U.S. Department of Agriculture or the U.S. Agency for International
 Development in programming that promotes trade and resilient 
agriculture systems in developing nations.

"Through my global food systems leadership classes, I learned about 
adaptive problems like food security, sustainability, food waste, 
post-harvest loss and more," said Polson. "I immediately felt my heart 
connect with the farmer, but not just the ones that reminded me of my 
dad, farmers of all walks of life."

The Summer Institute program will also include seminars focused on 
national politics and policymaking, meetings with former Truman scholars
 and other prominent public servants, and scholar-led presentations.

Utilizing the scholarship, Polson hopes to attend Cornell University,
 where she wants to pursue a Master of Professional Studies in global 
development, specializing in international development economics and 
policy.

She wants to address the paradox in agricultural development that is 
demonstrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to Polson, 
about 60% of the country's population is employed in agriculture, and 
about 60% of the population lives in poverty, which can also mean food 
insecurity.&nbsp;

"This means there is a large population in the world that is growing 
food, but yet, is hungry. This is the problem I want to dedicate my life
 toward," said Polson.&nbsp;

"I want to discover why inequities in our food system exist — 
specifically ones that occur at the expense of international farmers — 
and how we can change the system to resolve them. Food is a human right.
 Politics and international relations should not dictate the livelihood 
and nutrition of lives around the world, but they do. I want to be part 
of the effort to eradicate that."

At K-State, Polson holds leadership offices in several organizations,
 including student coordinator, Food Security Scholars; deputy attorney 
general, Student Governing Association; and director of retreats and 
team training, Blue Key Senior Honor Society. She is also a member of 
the Student Foundation and the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

Other awards Polson has received at K-State include the Chester E. 
Peters Student Development Award, the Robert Lewis Sophomore Leadership 
Award and the Duane and Shirley Acker International Scholar Award.

Polson is the daughter of Sharmon and John Polson and is a graduate of Frankfort High School.

Join Junction City Main Street for the next JC Statue unveiling that is celebrating our great high schools — Rams &amp; Blue Jays Come Together!

This statue project is funded by a Kansas Creative Arts Grant and the statues were built by the K-State Composite Club in Salina. In addition, the R2B4 Family Foundation awarded six local high school students $1,000 to facilitate a community project of their choice.&nbsp;

The unveiling is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. April 22 at Bella's Italian Restaurant, 605 N. Washington.
