GEARY COUNTY - On February 2nd, the 2022-2023 class of the Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program was honored with a graduation ceremony.

The class spent six months visiting communities and talking with leaders in Geary, Pottawatomie, Riley and Wabaunsee counties.

“This diverse class found and embraced the most important component of true servant leadership and earned the moniker 'The Bison Class.' The BISON, the spirit animal of the Flint Hills Regional Leadership class of 2022-2023, represents unity, bravery, kindness, respect, healthy landscapes and strong communities.” Executive Director, Jack Lindquist says.

Ret. Lieutenant General Perry Wiggins gave the closing address and challenge to the class.

FORT RILEY - In October 2022, the Army Office of The Judge Advocate General announced that Staff Judge Advocate offices Army-wide, will no longer provide tax preparation services.

In the past, the Fort Riley Office of the Staff Advocate had operated a Tax Assistance Center in conjunction with the IRS's Voluntary Income Tax Assistance Program to provide tax preparation services for persons eligible to receive legal assistance under Army Regulation 27-3 and operated a Tax Center.

Fort Riley Legal Assistance Office will no longer provide tax preparation assistance.

Due to the increased workload in recent years, the Judge Advocate General made the decision to stop providing tax preparation services Army-wide.

Soldiers, families, and retirees within first year of separation can find tax preparation assistance through Military One Source. MilTax does not serve retirees beyond their first year of separation nor veterans. Tax preparation assistance is also available through the Internal Revenue Service.

The Fort Riley Legal Assistance Office is unable to provide previous clients with copies of their prior year tax returns or any information contained in the return.  Please contact IRS.gov for a tax transcript.

US Army no longer operating tax centers

JUNCTION CITY - Junction City Police Department announced Jeana Foley, who was <a href="https://jcpost.com/posts/45465ba4-0e32-472f-b7cd-9c00ed6b2545">wanted for abducting her three children in December</a>, has turned herself in at the Junction City Police Department on February 6th at approximately 1:00 pm.

All three children, 6-year-old Rosie, 5-year-old Camden and 3-year old Genevieve were returned to the Junction City Police Department, by Foley, safe and unharmed.

Foley was arrested on 3 counts of aggravated interference with parental custody, and is being held at the Geary County Detention Facility.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged assault on officers.

Just before midnight Friday, officers filed a report for aggravated assault of law enforcement in the 100 block of Bluemont Ave. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Three officers reported a 32-year-old man pulled out a sharp object and threatened them while they were investigating a verbal argument between the man and a woman. 

Police arrested 32-year-old Exzavien Hunter of Manhattan at the scene on requested charges of aggravated assault of LEO and transported to the Pottawatomie County Jail.&nbsp; He is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

(TOPEKA, Kan., Feb. 3, 2023) — Several Junction City organizations that address access to health care services and healthy foods will receive charitable contributions from the Stormont Vail Foundation to assist their vital work in the community.

Stormont Vail Foundation managed the charitable dollars for the Stormont Vail Health system and supports the mission of Stormont Vail Health in improving the health of the patients and communities it serves

Amy Burns, President and Executive Director, Stormont Vail Foundation, noted that a record number of requests were made for charitable funds for 2023.

“As our communities get back to more normal routines following two years of the pandemic, we are seeing greater demand among the population for basic needs such as food, shelter, transportation and healthcare,” she said. “The organizations that are directly providing those services are being stretched thin so we try to provide support with charitable funds earmarked to go back to the communities we serve. This year, with our Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills Campus in full operation in Junction City, we were glad to expand that giving to Geary County organizations.”

Organizations selected to receive funding in Junction City and funding utilization include:

• Live Well Geary County to support the Healthy Together Senior Community Meals program.

• Delivering Change to help with access to prenatal care and mental health care for Geary County women.

• Sponsorship of 9th annual Junction City Bramlage Brawl youth wrestling tournament

• United Way of Junction City/Geary County to provide support to partner agencies and direct service support programs.

“Live Well Geary County is grateful to receive the grant to support our Healthy Together community meal program,” said Susan Jagerson, Director and Grant Coordinator with Live Well Geary County. “The funding will be used to continue to provide free weekly healthy meals for seniors and others. We are excited to partner with Stormont Vail Flint Hills to improve access to healthy food in Geary County.”

In addition to distributing annual charitable funds in the community, the Stormont Vail Foundation provides funding for emergency patient needs at the organization’s two hospitals – Topeka and Junction City – and at clinics.This is done through the Foundation’s Care Line program. The Care Line helps patients and their families with needs that are typically not covered by insurance and may include prescriptions, clothing, transportation, temporary lodging and durable medical equipment.

According to Junction City Police, on December 21, Jeana Foley abducted her children identified as 6-year-old Rosie Peterson, 5-year-old Camden Peterson and 3-year-old Genevieve Peterson

On Jan. 5, a felony warrant was issued for Foley's arrest. On Wednesday, Junction City police asked the public to call 911 if you have any&nbsp; information to help bring these kids home. Police released no additional details in the case.

MANHATTAN, Kan – The story of a professional football player suffering a heart condition while on the field has recently drawn national headlines, but a Kansas State University food scientist said it’s important at all times to prioritize heart health.&nbsp;

Karen Blakeslee said heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S.&nbsp;

“Cardiovascular disease includes all types of diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels like stroke, coronary heart disease, heart failure and peripheral artery disease,” Blakeslee said. “Coronary heart disease is when the arteries get clogged with plaque which restricts the flow of blood.”&nbsp;

The American Heart Association recognizes February as American Heart Month, a time when the nation spotlights heart disease. Blakeslee recommends learning about your family health history. If heart disease runs in your family, you could be at an increased risk.&nbsp;

“Smoking is a risk factor, so take steps to stop smoking to improve heart health,” Blakeslee said. “Be physically active with activities you enjoy. This can also reduce stress, another factor for heart disease. Taking walks is a great place to start and you can get a kick start with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.walkkansas.org/" target="_blank">Walk Kansas 2023."</a>&nbsp;

Heart health can also be improved by eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains each day. Cut back on high-fat foods and reduce sodium intake.&nbsp;

“According to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/education/american-heart-month" target="_blank">National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute</a>, more than 800,000 people die of cardiovascular disease each year in the U.S. That means 1 in 3 deaths are associated with cardiovascular disease,” Blakeslee said. &nbsp;

January is normally the coldest and driest month of the year in Geary County.&nbsp; Pleasantly, January 2023 was warmer and wetter than usual. The average daily high during January was 42.6, 2.8 degrees above normal. The average overnight low was 25.2, 5.8 degrees above normal. This resulted in a monthly mean temperature of 33.9, 4.3 degrees above average. 

The highest temperature for the month was 59 degrees on the 10th and the 15th. The lowest temperature for the month was the morning low of 5 on the 31st. There were no temperature records set or tied during January. While it was a warm month, it was not record setting. It was the tenth warmest January on record though. The warmest January was in 2006 when we had a monthly mean temperature of 43.9 degrees. For the coldest January we venture back to the “mini ice age” period in the late 1970s. January 1979 had a frigid mean temperature of 12.1, with 1978 and 1977 coming in with strong second and third coldest Januarys on record at 14.4 and 17.0 degrees average temperature.

At 0.73 inches, average, of liquid precipitation, January is our driest month of the year. While it is also our snowiest month of the year (tied with February) at 4.2 inches of snow, we saw more liquid and less snow than average. Total precipitation for January was 1.88 inches. This is over 250% of normal for the month. But given the dry conditions of the past 18 months, it was a nice change. Average January snowfall is 4.2 inches but the area only managed about 1.4 inches. This brings the season to date total to 4.2 inches, less than half of the long term average of 9.4 inches. 

February is our shortest month of the year and while still in the heart of winter, with brutally cold temperatures possible, it does generally show some nice improvement in temperature. Average daily highs at the start of the month are around 40 and four weeks later we are almost hitting 50. Overnight lows range from 19 on the 1st to 26 on the 28th. While subzero temperatures have been recorded clear into mid-March, there is a noticeable moderation in record low temperatures in the last week of February. February shares the title of snowiest month of the year with January at 4.2 inches. Total liquid precipitation does start to increase in February with long term average February precipitation of 1.10 inches.&nbsp;&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged computer crime in Manhattan.

On Wednesday, officers filed a report for theft by deception and unlawful acts concerning computers in the 800 block of Levee Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

<a href="https://rescarecommunityliving.com/locations/">Rescare Community Living r</a>eported a 33-year-old woman had been clocking in for work from home and inflating time worked resulting in over $4,400 wrongfully paid to her.&nbsp; Police released no additional details.

Now that January has ended, we should have all the forms we need to file our federal and state income taxes. One of the biggest changes in our federal 2022 taxes is the Child Tax Credit, which is claimed by tens of millions of Americans every year.

As a response to the economic problems created by COVID, for 2021 Congress changed the child tax credit so it was higher and fully refundable. Their goal was to reduce child poverty in the United States.

And it worked! Combined with other relief efforts, the expansion helped lower child poverty by more than 40 percent between 2020 and 2021, from 9.7% to a record low of 5.2%, according to the Census Bureau. This meant 3.7 million children were lifted out of poverty in 2021.

What were the changes? The amount of the credit was $3,000 per child, $3,600 if they were under age 6. 17-year-olds were included. For July through December, the credit was paid out monthly: $250 per month for each qualifying child age 6 to 17, $300 per month for each qualifying child under age 6. This enabled families to budget and spend the money as it was needed.

Those changes all ended in December, 2021, for taxes filed by April, 2022.

The rules reverted back to those that were in place for filing 2020 returns. The amount of the credit is $2,000 per child through age 16. There were no early payments last year.

According to the IRS, you can claim the 2022 Child Tax Credit for each qualifying child, meaning

· Be under age 17 at the end of the year

· Be your son, daughter, stepchild, eligible foster child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, half-sister, or a descendant of one of these (grandchild, niece or nephew)

· Provide no more than half of their own financial support during the year

· Have lived with you for more than half the year

· Be properly claimed as your dependent on your tax return

· Have been a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien

You qualify for the full amount of the 2022 Child Tax Credit for each qualifying child if you meet all eligibility factors and your annual income is not more than $200,000 ($400,000 if filing a joint return). Parents and guardians with higher incomes may be eligible to claim a partial credit.

Last year households could claim the credit even if they hadn't earned income from a job or didn't owe any income taxes. Instead, only up to $1,500 of the Child Tax Credit is refundable for some lower-income individuals with children. You must have at least $2,500 of earned income to even qualify for this partial refund.

You have to file a tax return to get any of the Child Tax Credit refund. You must file Schedule 8812 to figure the amount of the credit.

Families who qualify for the Child Tax Credit might also qualify for the Child and Dependent Care Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit, Adoption Credit, or Education credits.

The IRS asks that, if possible, people file electronically rather than mailing in paper forms. The library has public computers that anyone can use. Log in using your library card number. If you aren’t a patron of the library, you can use a guest pass if you provide a current photo ID. You can print from the computer for 25¢ a page.

The library will print blank tax forms for patrons at no cost at their request. This does not include the tax instruction booklets, just the blank tax forms.

The IRS is generally promising refunds within 21 days of filing of electronic returns. This would be true for people who file online, make no errors on their return, and request that their refund be directly deposited into their bank account.

Getting Ahead: Child tax credit 2022

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple charges after an arrest in Manhattan.

Just after 7:30p.m. Wednesday, a 65-year-old man reported a 41-year-old man stole his 2016 Ford F-250, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Officers quickly found the suspect later identified as Theodore Ayton, Jr., of Manhattan and the truck in the 700 block of Yuma Street in Manhattan.&nbsp; 

When officers attempted to make contact with Ayton, he ran but was taken into custody a short time later in the 700 block of Colorado Street.

Ayon also was found to have a suspended driver's license and was driving the stolen truck to the residence of an individual who had a no contact order issued against him.

Police arrested Ayton on requested charges of theft, interference with law enforcement, violation of a protection order, and driving while suspended. He remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $10,000.

Manhattan man jailed for alleged theft of pickup truck

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded just after two p.m. Wednesday to the 2800 block of Dietrich Road for a single vehicle injury accident. Loren Jeardoe, Junction City, was northbound on Dietrich Road when he made a maneuver in his Ford F150 to avoid another unknown vehicle driving in his lane. Jeardoe then lost control of his vehicle causing it to roll.

By Dewey TerrillJC PostGeary County Sheriff's Deputies responded just after two p.m. Wednesday to the 2800 block of Dietrich Road for a single vehicle injury accident. Loren Jeardoe, Junction City, was northbound on Dietrich Road when he made a maneuver in his Ford F150 to avoid another unknown vehicle driving in his lane. Jeardoe then lost control of his vehicle causing it to roll. The Sheriff's Department reported that minor injuries were reported at the scene. The vehicle had disabling damage and was towed from the scene.

Fort Riley police seek help from the public

Members of the winter homecoming royalty will be crowned between girls and boys varsity basketball games Friday night at Junction City High School. One of the coordinators for the event, Dana Weigand, said there will be five candidates for the senior class. Voting is currently under way.

This week is Blue Jay Road trip at JCHS, said Weigand. "Each of the classes selected a destination for the end of the week. But we've had spirit days all week long." Monday was get ready for the road trip and anything but a backpack day, with staff and students carrying their supplies in anything but a backpack.&nbsp;

Tuesday was Destination Alaska with everyone dressing in cold weather gear, Wednesday Destination Texas with western spirit wear, Thursday Destination California with everyone asked to dress as their favorite celebrity and Friday the final destination with everyone to dress in their Blue Jay colors. Each class also has a color representing their class. Freshman will be dressed in gray, sophomores in black, juniors in white and seniors in blue.

There will also be a pep rally on Friday during the advisory period and basketball Friday night when the Lady Jays and Blue Jays host Topeka High. There will also be a dance Friday night after the ballgames.

According to the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce there is no charge for Chamber members, $20 for Non-Chamber members for the series, and currently enrolled Cloud County Community College members will be admitted free. This is a non-credit course.

MANHATTAN - On Wednesday, February 1st, around 10:30 am. Manhattan Fire Department was called out to a fire at the Rapid Wash car wash located at 8207 South Port Drive.

When they arrived on scene fire crews located a propane-fueled fire on the exterior of the building.

Firefighting foam was used to extinguish the fire which was located in a pit within 10 minutes.

No injuries were reported. Six fire apparatus and 16 firefighters responded to the scene.

The loss is estimated at $15,000. The cause of the fire was determined to be an issue with a portable propane heater.

The owner is listed as Leiszler Real Estate LLC of 8228 South Port Dr.&nbsp;

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Wamego Police Department, and the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of a man identified as Justin L. Meyer 47, of Wamego after his body was found Sunday afternoon at a residence in Wamego

Just after 1 p.m., on Sunday, a man called 911 after finding Meyer dead inside a residence at 1001 Ash St., Lot 29, in Wamego, according to a media release from the KBI.

When officers from the Wamego Police Department arrived, they located Meyer on the floor of the bathroom. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. As the case unfolded, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office and the KBI were asked to assist in the investigation.

At this time, evidence is not suggesting that foul play occurred, but investigators are awaiting the final autopsy report, according to the KBI.
