MANHATTAN - Around 6:15 am on Sunday, August 7th, Riley County Police Department, with assistance from Riley County EMS and the Manhattan Fire Department; responded to the 3500 block of Hudson Circle on the report of a e-scooter crash.

When crews arrived on the scene they located 18-year old Dayana De Jesus Santana, who had been riding an e-scooter before losing control on uneven pavement.

De Jesus Santana hit her head on the pavement when she fell and was transported to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan for treatment of a possible concussion.

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a pair of car - deer accidents Sunday evening. According to the Sheriff's Department in one case on K-57 Highway at mile marker 5, Kevin Jones, Milford, was traveling east in a Chevrolet Uplander when a deer entered the roadway and was struck by the vehicle. The driver was not injured but the Uplander sustained minor damage.

In a second case Deputies responded to the 13000 block of Clarks Creek Rd. for a single vehicle accident with a deer. Penny Kidd, White City, was traveling south in a Nissan Rogue when a deer entered the roadway and was struck by the vehicle. The vehicle sustained minor damage but the driver was not injured.

Geary County Deputies respond to car - deer collisions

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher I am writing this on the day of the primary elections, complete with my “I Voted” sticker on the left pocket of my shirt. I am proud to say that I exercised my right to vote, and, in my mind, I made all the right choices. To my knowledge I have participated in every election since I turned 18, and I intend to exercise it every opportunity I get for the rest of my life. I don’t know if you have noticed but we are at a serious crossroads in the history of our great nation. That crossroads makes exercising the right to vote even more critical now than ever. That is especially true for those of us in agriculture. We are an ever-shrinking number, and we must take every chance we can get to make our voices heard and that is especially true when it comes to the polls. That is also why it is so critical for each of us as Farm Bureau members to get involved with Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends, or VOTE FBF. First, let me encourage you to support it monetarily. The dollars are used to support candidates friendly to agriculture are only generated through donations from members. It doesn’t have to be much if each of us donate every year. More importantly get involved in the county process to decide which candidates to support. Like everything else in Farm Bureau, the decision of which candidates to support starts at the county level. Increasingly we are seeing candidates recognize this and start to attend county board meetings and this gives us an opportunity to have discussions with them about our views. Those recommendations along with voting records are heavily considered by the Vote FBF board when deciding which candidates to endorse. I would also hope that when you do go to the polls you will look at the list of candidates endorsed by VOTE FBF and consider supporting them. They are the candidates who have the best interest of agriculture in mind and most closely align with our policy. In the end you will make up your own mind and vote for the candidates that best represent you, but the list of endorsed candidates is a good place to start. The most important thing is to get out and vote in November. It is the best way for us to make our voices heard. It was ingrained in me early on that if you did not participate and vote, you really had no right to complain. I know I still get a feeling of pride every time I go to the polls and cast my vote. Regardless of how I feel about the slate of candidates or the issues I am voting on, I do get a great deal of satisfaction participating in the process. It isn’t perfect, but it is the best in the world. So go cast your vote and wear that sticker with pride, you earned it.

A Sticker of Satisfaction

Music from Styx and and new visuals incorporating dance by the band members will be part of the halftime show by the JCHS Marching Band at Blue Jay football games this fall. Jared Morris, Band Director, feels it will look different than what the audience has been used to seeing. "It's going to be a lot of fun and the students are very excited about it. We'll still have our drill formations but we're going to be incorporating a lot more visuals with body movement and horn movements into those formations."

The Band will be comprised of about 105 members this year, up 20 members from a year ago.

The band members participated in band camp last week, with Samantha Boxberger, Assistant Director, calling it awesome&nbsp; to have the students back. She noted that there was&nbsp; a different energy in the building with the students working to prepare for the upcoming school year.

JCHS Marching Band prepares a new fall show

USD 475 needs free and reduced lunch forms completed for students this upcoming school year. The action is being required by the federal government, said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston. "So parents will need to do so. Due to COVID-19 in the past lunch was free for everyone. " That will not be the case moving forward.

Eggleston added that everyone will need to fill out the free and reduced lunch forms so they can be accommodated and to ensure students get a healthy meal.

Eggleston also noted that there was also discussion at this past week's school board meeting about the central kitchen and child nutrition program. "I know that there have been some concern about our meals and so what we've done is try to see how we can make it more attractive, look at different offerings that students will enjoy and so we're going to try and expand it based on what the law and rules will allow us." 

Eggleston added that the federal government puts certain criteria in place on how meals can be prepared and what meals can be offered. "So we're going to do everything we can to make those meals attractive. We know a good diet is important and we want students to perform at their best so we definitely want to make sure that the students take advantage of all the meal offerings that we provide our students. "

KDHE and KDWP issue blue green algae advisories

JUNCTION CITY - Shortly before 2:30 am on Saturday August 6th, officers with the Junction City Police Department responded to the 2600 block of Deerfield Blvd. for the report of a possible stabbing.

When officers arrived on the scene, they located an adult male with a stab wound, he was transported to the Geary Community Hospital in serious but stable condition. He was later transported to Stormont Vail Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Upon further investigation, officers found a second victim, 30-year old Stacy Subotich, of Fort Riley, had been transported to Irwin Army Hospital with life-threatening stab wounds. Subotich later died from her injuries.

Officers learned a third individual had driven themselves to Geary Community Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening stab wound.

The third individual was identified as 21-year old Jalen Thomas of Junction City.&nbsp;

After investigation, Thomas was arrested for 2nd Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery, Domestic Battery, and Aggravated Assault. He was transported to the Geary County Detention Center and is being held until his first court appearance.

The Junction City Police Department thanks the US Army Criminal Investigation Division, the Geary County Sheriff’s Office, and the Junction City Fire Department for their assistance in this investigation. 

This case remains under investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Junction City Police Department 785-762-5912 or Geary County Crimestoppers at 785-762-8477. 

No further information will be released at this time.

Saturday morning stabbing leaves one dead in Junction City

Two Junction City Commissioners are vying for seats in the Kansas House of Representatives, Jeff Underhill and Nathan Butler. Underhill is running unopposed on the ballot for the 65th District seat while Butler was the top vote-getter ahead of John Seibel Tuesday night in the 68th District Republican primary election count. However in that race involving portions of Morris, Geary and Riley counties the votes have to be canvassed and provisional ballots reviewed before final official results can be released. Michael Seymour II, Democrat, will meet the winner in the November general election.

In his 515 report this week Junction City Manager Allen Dinkel noted that if either of the commissioners are elected they can serve as both a state representative and city commissioner. It happened in the past when Bill Levinson served in both capacities. It is the choice of the individual commissioner. "I have already been asked what happens if a Commissioner decides to resign. Again, who knows, but if they do, a replacement is chosen by the City Commission. This process will be addressed by the Commission at that time and there is not set process." 

Dinkel added that the replacement would serve the remainder of the term of the commissioner that they replaced. That is regardless of the length of the term. Butler has informed JC Post&nbsp; that he would resign from the city commission if he is elected to the Kansas House while Underhill confirmed for JC Post that he plans to remain on the commission to help with existing projects.

The meal will begin about 6 p.m. Those who attend should bring side dishes and desserts enough to feed their family and guests. After the meeting there will be a short meeting, presentation of Junior Trap League awards and awards from the High School Clays spring season.

Upcoming Association events include a Hunter Education class on Aug. 20th. Sign-up information can be found on the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks website.

There will be a Women on Target instructional shooting clinic on Oct. 1st. Women 18 and over can experience all of the shooting and outdoor activities offered at Sportsman's Acres.

Geary County Fish &amp; Game will also hold their second Archery shoot on Oct. 16th. The shoot will consist of a walking course, fun shoots at the static course and closing money shoot. Shirley Allen will hold a committee meeting on Sept. 8th at 6:30 p.m. to discuss and plan for this shoot.

Through Aug. 12 at participating locations, including the Scooter's Coffee at 439 W. 6th Street in Junction City, customers can add $1 to their order. All proceeds will benefit WWFS.&nbsp;

This is the fifth consecutive year Scooter's Coffee has supported WWFS to help combat wounded veterans and families of veterans wounded, injured or killed in action. Last year, Scooter's Coffee donated approximately $44,000 to WWFS thanks to the generosity of customers, employees and franchises at participating locations.

Law enforcement members participated in community involvement when they hosted their annual summer block party in Heritage Park Friday evening. Activities ranged from music and free food to a car show and dunk tank.

Police Chief John Lamb explained the evening was an opportunity for the public to learn about the different things going on in the community. "Also see what our local law enforcement can do, and what we can provide between us and the Sheriff's Department, Grandview Plaza Police and the Junction City Fire Department, what&nbsp; their taxpayer money is going toward, provide the service that we provide.

Lamb also participated in the dunk tank. "Deep and cold but it was refreshing. As hot as it is we still have a good crowd so we're really excited about the turnout. "

Agricultural law specialist, Roger McEowen will present a program on Kansas fence law at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23rd. Topics to be addressed include basics of the Kansas fence law statutes; partition fences; locating, building and maintaining legal fences; handling fence disputes; highway forces; adverse possession and other regularly encountered fence law questions.&nbsp;

There is a plan to save the financially challenged Geary Community Hospital.

 Meeting on Thursday the Geary County Public Building Commission adopted a resolution requesting the authorization of up to $32 million in revenue bonds to support the hospital, said County Finance Director Tami Robison.&nbsp; "Our intent is to bond out $31 million and of that $20 million will be repairs for the hospital, $4 million will be our accounts payable that we anticipate paying at the end of December and then the $6 million shortfall from the revenue shortfall from July to December that the County will be paying." Hospital officials approached Junction City leaders about helping pay the operational shortfall but so far have not received any money. The Geary Community Healthcare Foundation provided $1.5 million but that must be repaid.&nbsp;

The moves by the PBC are necessary to satisfy a lease agreement with Stormont Vail Health, who assumes oversight of operations at the hospital on Jan. 1.

The revenue bonds will be retired by a six-mill property tax levy that is already in effect to support Geary Community Hospital. That levy covers existing general obligation bonds, existing revenue bonds through the PBC, no-fund warrants that will be paid off in 2024 and the new bond issue. The $32 million bond issue would be scheduled for payoff in 2048. There would not be any increase necessary&nbsp; in the property tax levy.

A current one-quarter cent sales tax has also been used to help retire the existing general obligation bonds which were used to pay for the west side expansion of the hospital many years ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On the time frame of paying off the bonds through 2048, Robison explained a benefit. "Part of the structure of long-term debt is so that you don't over burden the taxpayers of today and you spread that out over the years so the taxpayers of today and the taxpayers get both the benefit and also have the responsibility of those costs."

The plan is to publish the resolution in the newspaper followed by a public protest period. If there is a petition filed with the county clerk's office containing signatures from five percent of&nbsp; the registered voters in the most recent certification to the Secretary of State's Office, it would then be placed on a future election ballot.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged sex crimes.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a suspect identified as&nbsp;Luis Martinez, 31, of Topeka, allegedly battered a 37-year-old woman and forced her to stay in a room for an extended period of time.

Police located him already in custody in Pottawatomie County, arrested him on a warrant and transported him to the Riley County jail. 

Martinez is being held on requested charges of aggravated domestic battery, aggravated criminal sodomy, and aggravated kidnapping on a $75,000 bond, according to the RCPD.

RCPD: Man jailed for alleged violent attack on a woman

The 4th Annual Bow Slinger event at Fort Riley is more than an archery tournament; it’s also a chance to meet your Army. The Aug. 20 event is open to the public and will feature activities for the whole family at Fort Riley’s Outdoor Adventure Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

--A military working dog demonstration at 10 a.m.

--A free Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks archery clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

--A bus tour of Fort Riley, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Fort Riley’s Bow Slinger tournament is also a chance to Meet Your Army

MANHATTAN - A 30-year old Manhattan woman was injured in a <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/4a37ab72-e9d8-4f03-84e6-565789111899">Thursday evening rollover crash </a>near the intersection of Hayes Drive and Gross Street.

When Riley County Police Department officers arrived on the scene, they found a 2009 Pontiac G5 driven by 30-year old Lyndsay Jones of Manhattan on it's roof.

According to RCPD, Jones was traveling northbound on Hayes Drive when the car drifted to the left, and hit a curb before hitting a tree which cause the car to overturn.

Jones was initially transported to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan for treatment of her injuries before being transferred to Stormont Vail for further treatment.

Additional details on the crash or extent of Jones' injuries are not available as of 8:45 am Friday, August 5, 2022.

Games, band performances, food and just reuniting with old friends were all part of the Back to School Carnival at Junction City High School Thursday evening. The event was held at Blue Jay Stadium a few days ahead of the new school year.

Dr. Reginald Eggleston, USD 475 Superintendent of Schools, was there. "It ushers in the new year, as you can see we have a lot of people here, a lot of excitement in the air. Just gives everyone a chance to let their hair down and have a good time."

Director Jared Morris said they're excited about the show design for this fall when they will perform at football games and in festivals. "We're going to be doing a lot of new types of visuals that incorporate dance for the band members. It's going to look different than what our audience is used to seeing. It's going to be a lot of fun but our students are very excited about it."&nbsp;

The&nbsp; first day of school for students at JCHS will be either Aug. 16th or 17th, depending on whether you are a new or returning student.

Junction City Public Works Director Ray Ibarra said Thursday that the Karns Drive portion of the K-18 - Karns Drive roundabout is projected to open next Friday, Aug. 12th. That location is the back entrance to nearby Junction City Middle School.

K-18 has been opened for east and west traffic but the Blue Jay Way entrance to Junction City High School near the roundabout is not yet open.

Geary County Clerk Rebecca Nordyke has ruled that the independent nomination petitions for Trish Giordano for Geary County Commission District #1 are valid. So her name will appear on the general election ballot in November.

Giordano is running as an Independent candidate against Republican Brad Roether for a four-year term on the county commission. Giordano is currently serving a two-year term on the governing body.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged aggravated battery and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 2:30a.m. Thursday, police filed a report for aggravated battery in the 500 block of Leavenworth Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity rep ort.

A 42-year-old woman reported a 41-year-old male suspect later identified as Nicholas Mainville of Manhattan hit her in the face with a baseball bat. 

EMS transported the victim to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. Police arrested Mainville on a requested charge of aggravated battery. He is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

Mainville has previous convictions for making a false writing, attempted trafficking contraband into a correctional facility and for unlawful manufacture of a controlled substance, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – A rush to locally produced meat partly necessitated more than two years ago by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has spawned consumer’s interest in direct-to-consumer processing businesses, said a group of Kansas State University experts.&nbsp;

Dustin Pendell, an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ageconomics.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">agricultural economist</a>&nbsp;with K-State Research and Extension, said that while consumers have always expressed an interest in locally processed meat, “Kansas has seen an increasing demand for local, direct-to-consumer meat processing businesses.”&nbsp;

Jessie Vipham, an assistant professor in K-State’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.asi.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Department of Animal Sciences and Industry</a>, noted that from January 2020 to March 2022, the&nbsp;<a href="https://agriculture.ks.gov/" target="_blank">Kansas Department of Agriculture</a>&nbsp;granted licenses to seven new custom meat processing facilities in the state.&nbsp;

Plus, she notes, “the KDA’s meat and poultry inspection staff have spoken with at least 82 individuals who have expressed interest in operating a new custom or inspected meat processing facility in Kansas.”&nbsp;

In July,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/research/global-food/" target="_blank">K-State’s Global Food Systems initiative</a>&nbsp;awarded a grant to Vipham, Pendell and Rachel Mui – an assistant professor of management in&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">K-State’s College of Business Administration</a>&nbsp;-- to further develop the capacity of meat processing businesses in Kansas.&nbsp;

“As a university,” Mui said, “we have a charge&nbsp;to promote economic growth and prosperity, and as more and more people consider small business ownership -- especially in the meat processing arena -- we have a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact.”&nbsp;

“Ultimately, we hope to support&nbsp;small and very-small meat processors across Kansas, in terms of business expansion, business start-up and adoption of improved food safety practices,” Pendell said. “Specifically, we will conduct a needs assessment on the opportunities and constraints of small and very small meat processors when establishing or expanding a meat processing business.”&nbsp;

Pendell added the K-State group aims to develop individualized Food Safety Road Maps “that outline the food safety and inspection goals of each meat processor.”&nbsp;

The project team will be hosting five ‘Town Hall’ meetings across the state to meet with small meat processors about their current needs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“By working alongside local meat processors, we hope to better understand their needs from both industry-specific and entrepreneurial perspectives, and help them effectively address them, while identifying new opportunities and efficiencies at the same time,” Mui said.&nbsp;

The project will include K-State business students. Vipham said additional support has been received from the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas Meat Processors Association, Kansas Small Business Development Center and the K-State Research and Extension local food systems transdisciplinary team.&nbsp;
