RILEY COUNTY—A Junction City woman was one of three&nbsp; people injured in an accident just after 2p.m. Wednesday in Riley County.

A 2013 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Rebecca Lazarus, 23, of Manhattan was northbound on S. Seth Child when she turned west onto Southwind and struck a southbound 2009 Dodge Journey driven by MacKenzie Clements, 21, of Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The impact of the crash sent th Malibu spinning into a 2016 Hyundai semi truck's trailer axel. 

EMS transported Lazarus to Via Christi by EMS for treatment of arm and other injuries, according to the RCPD. 

Malia Clements, 19, of Junction City, a passenger of the Dodge Journey, was also transported to Via Christi by EMS for treatment of a possible broken ankle.&nbsp; A private vehicle transported MacKenzie Clements to Via Christi after a complain of rib pain.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Wednesday in Pottawatomie County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Western semi driven by&nbsp; Mark E&nbsp;Stanwix, 44, Lecompton, was eastbound on U.S. 24 just west of Airport Road.

The semi rear-ended a 2008 Ford Edge driven by Megan K. Schindler, 34, St. Mary's, who was slowing and coming up behind a 2013 Ford F250 driven by Randy L. Tinkel, 37, Wamego, who was stopped waiting to make a left turn.&nbsp; The impact pushed the semi and Ford Edge into the pickup.

The Ford Edge came to rest on its side north of the roadway. The Ford F250 came to rest on the south side of the roadway on its roof. The semi&nbsp; came to rest on the south of the roadway in a field.

Randy Tinkel was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Stewart's Funeral Home.

EMS transported a 2-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy in the pickup to Children's Mercy.&nbsp; EMS transported a third passenger in the Ford F 250 Jillian C Tinkel, 36, Wamego, to Wamego Health Center.

EMS transported Schindler to Stormont Vail. Stanwix was not injured. The adults in the Ford F250 were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

&nbsp; One of the highlights of the 13th annual Great Lakes Grand Prix speedboat race in Michigan City, Indiana, Aug. 5 - 7, was the appearance of an AH-64 Apache helicopter from Fort Riley. Pilots and systems maintainers with 1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division worked in tandem with U.S. Army Chicago Recruiting Battalion to promote awareness of the Army. The helicopter arrived in style at the Great Lakes Grand Prix, flying along Lake Michigan's southern shore, before landing by the beach to set the stage for a weekend of high-octane entertainment. It was a "normal" duty day with a twist for the 1-6 CAV soldiers. They performed maintenance checks and post-flight inspections as they interacted with race fans and teams. As soon as the Apache touched down, fans flocked to the helicopter to take pictures. "It's a great feeling. I get to sit and talk about my job and educate people about what I do," said Sgt. Kyle Mowen, an Apache helicopter maintainer with Bravo Troop, 1-6 CAV. "It's nice to talk to the people. They could talk for days and days about boats and how they perform. They take a lot of pride in their boats."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Geary County Commissioners will canvass the votes from last week's primary election on Thursday. They will meet at 9:45 a.m. at the County Office Building.

One contested race involves&nbsp; the 68th District House Republican primary between Nathan Butler of Junction City and John Seibel of Burdick. The district covers Geary, Morris and Riley Counties. The voter canvass in Morris County is also Thursday while in Riley County it is next Monday.

After the initial round of vote tabulations, Butler had 1,228 votes and Seibel 1,089. The winner following the canvass of the votes will advance to the November general election against Democratic candidate Michael Seymour II of Council Grove.

Konza Prairie Community Health Center has announced that they are celebrating National Health Center Week with a food drive to stock the Konza Cupboard, a free pantry located outside the clinic at 361 Grant Ave in Junction City. The food drive will also benefit patients of the Konza clinic in Manhattan. Konza staff are contributing to this effort with an internal competition to see which department can donate the most items. The previous food drive, in August 2021, brought in enough supplies to fill the Konza Cupboard for three months.

The public is invited to donate food and personal hygiene items to help stock the Konza Cupboard. A donation box is available inside the main entrance at the Konza Junction City clinic.

The Konza Cupboard was established in March 2021 to help fight hunger in the community. It is part of the Konza Cares initiative – a suite of programs developed by the clinic to help patients access food, clothing, medication, transportation, and more.

There will be a Christmas Social at the C. L. Hoover Opera House on Saturday, Aug. 20th from 6-8 p.m. to raise money for holiday lights for the downtown. Admission will be $30 per person or $50 per couple&nbsp; for the adult-only evening.

The Junction City Main Street event is being sponsored by D.E.L. Motors.&nbsp;

Michaela Smith, Executive Director for Junction City Main Street, said there will be some fun Christmas special events that evening. One of those is a snowball drop where participants stand and fake snowballs are thrown at them. "Each snowball will be color coded with a different color and each code will represent a different award for coupons or gift cards to local businesses around town." There will also be a Christmas sweater contest.

The plan is to obtain lights for 6th to 10th Street down Washington and the cross streets of 7th,8th and 9th. Lights will be multiple colors and and there will be the ability to change the colors for different events. They will be strung across the tops of the buildings.

Self noted that officials are estimating that about $200,000 will need to be raised for the lights for all of downtown. Organizers are hoping to put some of the lights up quickly. "We won't be able to have the whole downtown lit up by Christmas, unfortunately, but our game plan is to have all of downtown lit up by next Christmas."&nbsp;

Self added that another fundraiser will be held in October and some local business or building owners have expressed interest and will donate some money for the project.

Junction City Main Street will raise funds for downtown holiday lights

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, were welcomed home during the pre-game ceremony of the Aug. 6 Major League Soccer match between Sporting Kansas City vs. Los Angeles Galaxy.

According to the Army 150 Soldiers took to the field for Military Appreciation Day following the unit's 11-month deployment to Europe in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a Department of Defense effort that provides rotational deployments of combat-credible forces to Europe to show the nation's commitment to NATO while building readiness, increasing interoperability and enhancing the bonds between ally and partner militaries.

For one 1st Infantry Division Soldier, being front and center on a soccer field was no strange feeling. U.S. Army Capt. Lauren McGovern, the Operation Victory Wellness Chief, 1st Infantry Division - Special Staff, and a member of the U.S. Armed Forces Women's Soccer team, assisted in leading troops onto the field, participated in a pre-game 'Meet Your Army' tailgate and had the opportunity to meet Sporting KC's President and CEO.

"It's very humbling to be honored like this," said McGovern. "It's amazing when someone sees something in you that they want to highlight to the rest of the world."

Beginning her soccer career at the age of three, the former West Point recruit and Denver, Colo., native spoke on what it is like being one of the bridges that helped to connect the Big Red One to Sporting KC.

"I think it's awesome when any organization wants to support the troops," said McGovern. "I know the other Soldiers think it's cool to have the opportunity to walk out onto the field and kind of get the recognition they deserve for their hard work and sacrifice."

The former Colorado Female Athlete of the Year said that she is grateful for the chance to give back to the community and inspire others through soccer as she looks to extend her lifelong passion and take her talents globally when the U.S. Armed Forces Women's team travels to the Netherlands for their next tournament in 2023.

Members of the Geary County Public Building Commission will consider a resolution on Thursday approving the sub-lease of Geary Community Hospital to Stormont Vail, Flint Hills, LLC. The meeting is scheduled at noon at the County Commission Chambers. Stormont will assume oversight of hospital operations on Jan. 1.

The Board will also consider a resolution approving an interlocal agreement between the Geary County Commission, Geary Community Hospital Board of Trustees and the Geary County Public Building Commission for repairs to Geary Community Hospital.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a man for not following the conditions of offender registration, according to the Riley County Police Department.

Just after 2p.m. Monday, police arrested 48-year-old Frank Gibson who has a residence in Manhattan for two counts of aggravated violation of registration act, violation of offender registration act, and perjury after he failed to comply with offender registration, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

In May of 2012, Gibson was convicted of felony unlawful sexual acts in Androscoggin County, Maine.

He remains confined in the Riley County Jail on total bond of $125,000.

Junction City Public Works has turned on the school zone warning flashers as a reminder that school will soon be in session.&nbsp;

The flashers will be turned on all week as a reminder for motorists that area schools will be in session starting Tuesday, Aug. 16th and to obey the 20 mph school speed zones.

Drivers also need to pay close attention to the school children during the morning and afternoon hours when children will be walking.

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a two vehicle accident near the intersection of US 77 Highway and Skiddy West Road just after 6 a.m. Tuesday. 

According to the Sheriff's Department, Zane Rains of Manhattan was traveling southbound in a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier when it struck a 2022 Ram 1500 Classic driven by Gail Hoke of Manhattan. Hoke was traveling southbound before attempting a U-turn in the roadway. Rains was transported to Geary Community Hospital for treatment. Both vehicles were removed by a wrecker service.

Geary County Commissioners have approved an interlocal agreement dealing with an upcoming revenue bond issue for the hospital in Junction City.

Geary County plans to issue revenue bonds, in part to make repairs that will be needed for the current Geary Community Hospital facility. They are needed for the lease agreement under which Stormont Vail Health will assume oversight of the hospital on Jan. 1.

Alex Tyson, county commission chair, noted that the money will be used to fix up the building once the funds are received over a five-year period. Total amount to be spent for repairs and maintenance has been calculated at $20 million, including $1.7 million this year.

Those funds are all part of a planned $32 million revenue bond issue that will also include funding for existing hospital debt and operational money needed for Geary Community Hospital to make it through the remainder of this year to the Jan. 1 agreement with Stormont Vail Health.

The interlocal agreement will also include the Geary Community Hospital Trustees, Stormont Vail and the Geary County Public Building Commission. A special meeting is expected to be scheduled this week for the PBC to consider the agreement.&nbsp;

Property taxes currently used to support Geary Community Hospital will be reallocated to retire the revenue bond debt. There will not be any increase in property taxes.

This year the event is scheduled on Saturday, Aug.20th at the South Boat Ramp at Milford State Park. But in many years blue green algae late in the summer can cause problems for the event.

Now Geary County Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau Director Donna Price is thinking about the late spring - early summer June time frame for the event in order to avoid blue green algae issues. "Because it will be cooler and we won't have the issues that seem to creep up this time of year."&nbsp;

As&nbsp; far as this year is concerned the water will be tested the morning of the event to determine if there are blue green algae issues. If there are, other possibilities mentioned as back up locations for Float Your Boat include the Corp of Engineers area on the south side of the lake and after that possibly the Rock Springs 4-H Center swimming pool.

Corcoran Professor of History at the University of Virginia and serves as the faculty director of Governing American in a Global Era, or GAGE. His work and teaching focus on the global history of the 20th Century, in particular the era of the two world wars and the cold war. 

A graduate of Kenyon College and Yale University, he is the author of The Age of Eisenhower and The Bitter Road to Freedom: The Human Cost of Allied Victory in World War II Europe, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN - Around 6:15 am on Sunday, August 7th, Riley County Police Department, with assistance from Riley County EMS and the Manhattan Fire Department; responded to the 3500 block of Hudson Circle on the report of a e-scooter crash.

When crews arrived on the scene they located 18-year old Dayana De Jesus Santana, who had been riding an e-scooter before losing control on uneven pavement.

De Jesus Santana hit her head on the pavement when she fell and was transported to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan for treatment of a possible concussion.

According to the Sheriff's Department in one case on K-57 Highway at mile marker 5, Kevin Jones, Milford, was traveling east in a Chevrolet Uplander when a deer entered the roadway and was struck by the vehicle. The driver was not injured but the Uplander sustained minor damage.

In a second case Deputies responded to the 13000 block of Clarks Creek Rd. for a single vehicle accident with a deer. Penny Kidd, White City, was traveling south in a Nissan Rogue when a deer entered the roadway and was struck by the vehicle. The vehicle sustained minor damage but the driver was not injured.

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher I am writing this on the day of the primary elections, complete with my “I Voted” sticker on the left pocket of my shirt. I am proud to say that I exercised my right to vote, and, in my mind, I made all the right choices. To my knowledge I have participated in every election since I turned 18, and I intend to exercise it every opportunity I get for the rest of my life. I don’t know if you have noticed but we are at a serious crossroads in the history of our great nation. That crossroads makes exercising the right to vote even more critical now than ever. That is especially true for those of us in agriculture. We are an ever-shrinking number, and we must take every chance we can get to make our voices heard and that is especially true when it comes to the polls. That is also why it is so critical for each of us as Farm Bureau members to get involved with Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends, or VOTE FBF. First, let me encourage you to support it monetarily. The dollars are used to support candidates friendly to agriculture are only generated through donations from members. It doesn’t have to be much if each of us donate every year. More importantly get involved in the county process to decide which candidates to support. Like everything else in Farm Bureau, the decision of which candidates to support starts at the county level. Increasingly we are seeing candidates recognize this and start to attend county board meetings and this gives us an opportunity to have discussions with them about our views. Those recommendations along with voting records are heavily considered by the Vote FBF board when deciding which candidates to endorse. I would also hope that when you do go to the polls you will look at the list of candidates endorsed by VOTE FBF and consider supporting them. They are the candidates who have the best interest of agriculture in mind and most closely align with our policy. In the end you will make up your own mind and vote for the candidates that best represent you, but the list of endorsed candidates is a good place to start. The most important thing is to get out and vote in November. It is the best way for us to make our voices heard. It was ingrained in me early on that if you did not participate and vote, you really had no right to complain. I know I still get a feeling of pride every time I go to the polls and cast my vote. Regardless of how I feel about the slate of candidates or the issues I am voting on, I do get a great deal of satisfaction participating in the process. It isn’t perfect, but it is the best in the world. So go cast your vote and wear that sticker with pride, you earned it.

A Sticker of Satisfaction

Music from Styx and and new visuals incorporating dance by the band members will be part of the halftime show by the JCHS Marching Band at Blue Jay football games this fall. Jared Morris, Band Director, feels it will look different than what the audience has been used to seeing. "It's going to be a lot of fun and the students are very excited about it. We'll still have our drill formations but we're going to be incorporating a lot more visuals with body movement and horn movements into those formations."

The Band will be comprised of about 105 members this year, up 20 members from a year ago.

The band members participated in band camp last week, with Samantha Boxberger, Assistant Director, calling it awesome&nbsp; to have the students back. She noted that there was&nbsp; a different energy in the building with the students working to prepare for the upcoming school year.
