It’s All About You was the topic of Dr. Ferrell Miller’s presentation at the January 25 Celebration of Optimism meeting at the Hampton Inn in Junction City. Ferrell used the three parts of the accordion the keyboard, bellows and bass buttons to demonstrate that “music on the accordion cannot be played unless all three parts work in consort with each other. He stated that “this is true in life. We make decisions about who we trust, who we spend time with, what kind of person we are and want to become, will be one who works with or against others to compromise and make things better.”

Ferrell was five years old when he began taking lessons to learn to play the accordion. At the end of a trial period, he was given an aptitude test to determine potential and for his parents to make a decision about continuing with lessons. He failed his first test and his mother cried and asked that he be given a second test. That happened and perhaps he was allowed to pass the second test. That was the beginning of his relationship with his teacher.

Aileen Spratt, his long-time private teacher was one of his greatest supporters. She encouraged him and challenged him to compete in local, state, national and eventually international competitions through his junior high and senior high school years. In 1959, Ferrell was the State of Ohio Champion Accordionist and was designated to compete in the international competition.

Ferrell admitted to the Optimist Club members that he did not apply himself in high school. He never read a required novel and rarely did his homework. When it came time to graduate high school, his counselor told him he had not prepared himself for college and should not plan to do so. His mother again cried and told Ferrell he would go to college and study music. So, he began classes at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) and after several attempts was asked not to return to his studies because of poor performance in classes.

In 1967, Ferrell was drafted into the US Army in part because he was not enrolled or was attending a university. During his two year tour in the Army, he discovered his purpose, which was to share his talent and love of music with young people through teaching students how to work as a unit in a choral performance. He went back to BGSU after having married his wife, Nita. Ferrell successfully completed his student teaching experience and degree requirements to become a teacher. A job opened at Fort Riley Junior High on Fort Riley for a vocal music teacher and he was selected.

Ferrell spent 14 years as a vocal music teacher, achieved his Master’s Degree in Music Education and a Master’s Degree in School Administration from Kansas State University. He was hired as an Assistant Principal at Junction City High School for 4 years and believed that working together to improve an entire school like Junction City Middle School was his calling and was hired as the Principal there for 21 years. Ferrell received his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Kansas State University in 1994.

When Nathan Amaro served on the panel as one of six students during the Junction City Main Street 2022 Community Forum on Diversity and Equality, he was asked what he could do to make a difference in Junction City. His idea was to “gather a big group of people to do something for kids and let their parents know that people care about their children.”

On January 24, 2023, his vision became a reality. Thanks to R2B4 Bramlage Foundation, who generously provided each of the six student panelists $1,000 to pursue their ideas, his project came to fruition. Nathan selected the children of Washington Elementary to mentor. He worked with Betty Waters, Head Secretary, and Stuart Schwarz, PE Teacher, to order $1,000 worth of PE equipment to be used for both educational and recreational purposes. When the project was completed, the equipment would remain at the school. His vision was to create a “field day” that would lead to progressive events for years to come.

Nathan Amaro invited Skylar Fisher, Lauren Heller, Michael Bogonowski, Christian Waters, Armani Coleman, Kylee Powell, Andre Dickey, Lyla Hayden and Xander Caldwell to join him in his endeavor. For nearly 2 hours, these 10 students interacted with kindergarten through 5th graders over their lunch hour playing with the equipment purchased through Nathan’s project. There were parachutes, popular board games, Circle Shoot, Multi-Ring Stand, Nok Hockey, Double Shoot Out and more.

The laughter from the gymnasium filled the hallways from elementary to high school students and beyond. And to top it off, it was Nathan’s birthday. So,&nbsp;Washington Elementary surprised Nathan with lunch and cupcakes to celebrate a day to remember for everyone.

Student idea comes to fruition in Junction City

Geary County Historical Society planners are beginning to plan a new activity for that organization. It will be a murder mystery event next fall, said Heather Hagedorn, Society Director. "We're in very early stages so we'll see but for right now it's just a one time event.

The setting for the murder mystery is expected to be based in the 1920's. " We're looking at a couple of script ideas, a couple of themes. We're months and months away so it's early stages." Hagedorn added it's a fun new activity and they're hoping people will come out for the event.

K-State’s rankings were higher in all six categories in 2023.&nbsp;

U.S. News &amp; World Report evaluated more than 1,800 online bachelor's and master's programs to determinetherankings, analyzing program effectiveness in a variety of areas, including student engagement, faculty credentials and training, and student services and technology. Online programs were also ranked for how effectively they serve veterans. "Expanding our online program offerings is a key piece to becoming a next-generation land-grant university and making education accessible to students across the globe,"&nbsp;said Chuck Taber, K-State executive vice president and university provost.&nbsp;"These rankings are external confirmation of what we at K-State already know: We offer excellent and high-quality options so that all students can achieve their academic goals." The online Professional Master of Business Administration jumped from No. 24 to No. 12 nationally and from No. 15 to No. 13 for veterans, the program's highest rankings since its launch in 2013. Also making notable strides was the online master’s in education, moving from No. 24 to No. 16 nationally and to No. 3 for veterans. Rankings for the suite of online master's programs in engineering improved from No. 30 to No. 22 nationally and&nbsp;to&nbsp;No. 16 for veterans.

Members of the Geary County CVB recently traveled to Denver for an International Sportsman Show. Donna Price, Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau Director, said it was a busy time. "Already have some folks that are talking about coming here. We know that one has actually made a phone call to one of our local businesses to come out. "

The purpose of the trips is to help attract people to visit Geary County. "I do have to say that this year was different in that we had a lot of people ask us about moving to Geary County," said Price. "There's a lot of folks that are wanting to leave Colorado and are looking for places to come that have a nice population, great community.

CVB staff participate in sports show in Denver

RUSSELL — The Russell USD 407 Board of Education has announced the selection of Jordan Perez as the new superintendent. Perez will take the reins on July 1, following Clark Coco, interim superintendent, whose contract ends on June 30.

Jordan Perez has broad educational experience, as an administrator, teacher, and mentor to educators. Perez was hired by USD 407 in 2019 and served two years as principal of Simpson Elementary School before transferring to his current position as principal of Ruppenthal Middle School. Prior to arriving in Russell, Perez taught fourth and second grades at Lee Elementary in USD 383 Manhattan.

Perez earned his bachelor of science in elementary education from Kansas State University in 2011, his master of arts in education from Ottawa University in 2018, and he will graduate in May 2023 with his education specialist degree from Fort Hays State University.

Board President Kathy Wallert said Perez emerged from a very thorough search process as the right candidate to lead the school District.

“The Board is certain in our choice of Jordan Perez and confident that under his leadership USD 407 will continue to move and grow in a positive direction," she said.

Wallert said community input, including the involvement of stakeholders, was a key factor in the success of the superintendent search process. The committees included teachers and administrators, parents, and community members.

“The input from the community as a whole was very helpful to our process," she said.

Perez was chosen from among three finalists.&nbsp;

The Geary County Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau (CVB) is reminding that the 2023 Spring Community Support and Marketing Grant application portal closes soon.

The CVB sets aside Community Support and Marketing Grant funds in support for and marketing of community events and attractions that exhibit positive tourism potential for Geary County. These funds are dedicated to assist qualified organizations with their activities that directly increase transient guest tax and sales tax throughout the year, and which help make Junction City/Geary County a tourism destination.

Applicants will need to apply for the 2023 Community Support and Marketing Grant and submit the application no later than 5:00 pm on January 31, 2023, to the Geary County CVB Office at 222 West 6th St. Applications can be submitted online, or mailed to P.O. Box 1846 Junction City, KS 66441. Applications will be reviewed individually by the CVB Grant Committee before being presented to the Geary County Board of Commissioners consideration of approval. Projected announcement of support will occur in February 20323.

65th District State Representative Jeff Underhill has been appointed to four committees in the Kansas House. They include the Elections, Insurance, Local Government and the Child Welfare and Foster Care Committee.

Underhill is working on&nbsp; a couple of big bills with other legislators, and they are hopeful one significant measure can be submitted to the House and Senate this week, "is working to extend the statute of limitations for sexual assault victims." Underhill noted that there is currently some language that inhibits survivor's rights. 'So we're trying to clarify that and make it easier for some people to get justice."

This is the first term in the Kansas House for Underhill, who also serves as a member of the Junction City Commission.

Jeff Underhill provides an update on Kansas House activity

BUCHANAN COUNTY, Mo.—One person was injured in an accident just after 6:30p.m. Monday in Buchanan County.&nbsp;

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Freightliner tractor driven by James M. Peterson, 52, Manhattan, was northbound on Interstate 29 just south of the downtown St. Joseph exit.

The vehicle changed lanes into the driving lane and rear-ended a 2012 Nissan Maxima driven by Cheryl L. Carpenter, 56, St. Joseph. After impact the Nissan slid off the road into the median and struck the cable barrier.

Buchanan County EMS transported Carpenter to Mosaic Life Care. Peterson was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

The Register of Deeds Office said the scam is by a company called "DD214" Direct" who said that they will attempt to file the documents and charge money to do so.

Veterans can record their original DD214 for free any time at the Geary County Register of Deeds Office, 200 E. 8th Street, Room 133. They can also receive free certified copies of their recorded DD214 upon request and completion of required forms. DD214 records are not part of the Open Records Act and copied are never provided without proper identification and a screening process.

Latest indications are for a dusting up to 3 inches of snow are possible which may impact the Wednesday morning commute.  High temperatures will remain on the colder side in the 30s with overnight lows in the teens to low 20s.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an armed robbery in Manhattan.

Just after 10p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for aggravated robbery at a restaurant in the 1000 block of N. 3rd Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

An individual armed with a handgun entered the restaurant while four employees were present and stole approximately $570 cash from the registers before fleeing the area. No injuries were reported.&nbsp;

Armed robbery: Suspect took $570 from restaurant cash register

By LAURA HAFFNER Ellis County farmer Farmers and ranchers are some of the most resilient people I know. They weather incredible odds, pun intended, from droughts, to floods, fire, hail, blizzards and more. This doesn’t even touch the volatile input costs, family dynamics, inflation and increased regulations we are seeing. Despite these adversities, we pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and continue to provide for our families while often being the first to give the shirts off our own backs for a neighbor in need. But what happens when that proverbial bootstrap snaps? Do we fix it right away and make it whole again, or do we slap a little duct tape and baling wire on it and call it good? While that solution may work for a short time, the tape will eventually lose its sticky and the wire will start poking one in the calf. That’s when a whole new set of challenges surface. In my own life, agriculture has provided me with some of life’s greatest highs, but it has also contributed to some of my darkest lows. It is curious how something we love so much can cause so much stress, and we often ignore or fail to address the signs.&nbsp; Several years ago, I invited a counselor with an agriculture background to my classroom. He walked students through an exercise where they wrote down all the agriculture-related stressors they could think of. Within a few short minutes, one group had listed more than 40. Upon evaluation, class members determined the only thing in all those items we could control was ourselves. That left more than 40 other major items that we had little to no control over. Talk about the perfect storm for some real stress in our industry! Using the results from the exercise, our guest speaker guided us through an eye-opening experience to help us learn how we view and handle our stress. Those in the room realized they weren’t alone, and there are others who have experienced similar stressors. That may have been just as powerful as any coping skill we could have learned — we are not alone in the battles we face in agriculture.&nbsp; Some battles we face are short and quick. They may annoyingly take our time and make us uncomfortable, but we can quickly adjust to take on another day. Some battles rage on for months and even years. Even the toughest, most resilient warriors can get worn down. In some cases, the burden is so great it feels like the battle may never end or we may be left behind on the field. But it doesn’t have to be that way.&nbsp; Our fellow members within the Farm Bureau family are standing up and recognizing that something needs to change. Farmers and ranchers are passionate about this topic because we’ve lived it or have seen our families and friends struggle with it. We are sounding the alarm, rallying the troops and fighting alongside each other to ensure no one is left on the field alone.&nbsp; Maybe you know something needs to change mentally but taking that first step to attack the topic of mental health is scary. Maybe the first step is opening up to a trusted friend, family member, doctor, pastor or exploring some resources to learn more. Perhaps you’re not experiencing any of your own mental health battles at the moment but would like to learn how to be an ally.&nbsp; While these don’t substitute for the opinion of a health care professional, Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) has been building an arsenal of resources that may serve as good place to start. You can find them by searching for Rural Minds Matter at kfb.org. “Kansas Living,” KFB’s quarterly lifestyle magazine, featured three members who have experienced challenges, and are working to help themselves and others. Kansas Farm Bureau Insight: Rural minds matter

Geary County Commissioners have decided to shorten up the format for their meetings, which normally occur on Mondays. They will continue to meet at 10 a.m. but adjourn about 1 p.m.

The agenda for this Monday includes a series of quarterly and weekly reports, a Department Head meeting, and there will be public comment at 12:30 p.m. Going forward the commission will be in session over the noon hour with the public comments at 12:30. Commissioner Trish Giordano said that they're hopeful this will make it easier for those wanting to address the commission, who work, to be able to attend over the noon hour.&nbsp;

Geary County Booking Report Jan. 19-20

It is hard to believe the first two weeks of the 2023 session have come to an end. Agendas have been fast and furious. As a Freshman Legislator, it feels as though I am drinking from a firehose. Gratefully, I have many veteran legislators that I can call on to gain insight on daily operations. I have been busy learning the House Rules and finding my way around the Capital Building. The House Leadership assigned me to serve on three committees: Veterans and Military; Corrections and Juvenile Justice; and Taxation. Several briefings have taken place during committee meetings. We have heard from the Secretary of Revenue and the Secretary of Corrections, as well as others who serve in significant roles in the State of Kansas.

There have been several bills introduced through all three of the committees on which I serve. Of particular interest, is a bill that I have co-sponsored, HB 2036, creating a property tax exemption for certain retired and disabled veterans. HB 2036 was introduced and has since been referred to the Taxation Committee. The Kansas Disabled Veterans Lobby group will host two gatherings to show support for HB 2036. The first gathering will take place February 17, 12:00 P.M., on the south steps of the Kansas State Capital building. The second gathering will be Saturday, February 18, 12:00 p.m., at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Gage Park, Topeka.

Kansas currently ranks 17th out of the 50 states for veteran friendliness. I was recently asked if 17th was good enough. Although 17th places our state into the category of being a veteran friendly state, there is absolutely room for improvement. I would like to see Kansas move up to the top 10. Legislation such as HB 2036, if passed, will be one catalyst that may begin the trend upward in ranking.

Are you aware that Kansas ranks 10th in youth suicides for ages 15-24, and 11th for ages 10-14? This statistic should cause us to take a step back and ask why. There are possibly several reasons, one of which is the lack of mental health care providers. Mental health professionals provide needed council and often can identify citizens at risk. I am hopeful Kansas will work to improve access to mental health professionals throughout the state. Some school districts have implemented programs to meet with youth and possibly identify those who may be having difficulty and possibly be at risk, increasing the chances of intervention. Whatever the cause, hopefully, Kansas can work to reduce the number of suicide deaths.

There is still much to learn as a Freshman Representative. My goal is to provide a short weekly update so that the constituents of the 68th District can be informed. Thank you again for trusting me to represent you at the Kansas House of Representatives.

State Representative covers developments in the Kansas House 

As realignment nears completion, Ebert Construction will be closing the existing Mockingbird Road which leads into Country Meadows on Monday, Jan. 23.

Geary County Public Works has announced that residents may use Goldfinch Drive on the west end of Mockingbird Road to access K-57 and U.S. 77.

All project work is scheduled for completion in October 2023, weather permitting.

By Dewey TerrillJC PostAs realignment nears completion, Ebert Construction will be closing the existing Mockingbird Road which leads into Country Meadows on Monday, Jan. 23.Geary County Public Works has announced that residents may use Goldfinch Drive on the west end of Mockingbird Road to access K-57 and U.S. 77.All project work is scheduled for completion in October 2023, weather permitting.

Bridget Vonspreckelsen and Kayla Ragan, Co-Directors of the Momentum Volleyball program in Junction City, were guest speakers at the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s meeting this past week. Bridget is originally from Nebraska and played volleyball at the University of Alabama. Kayla is a retired military spouse from New Orleans, Louisiana.

Bridget told the Optimists that “while watching a Junction City High School volleyball game against Highland Park High School, both she and Kayla agreed that a ‘feeder program” to help grow our own volleyball players was necessary.” There had been a traveling or club volleyball team in Junction City called The Force. When the adult leaders of that program moved from Junction City, there was a void for teaching girls competitive volleyball skills. Bridget and Kayla started a new group called Momentum.

Momentum began in 2020 with four teams and 35 players. It has since grown to eight teams with sixty-six players. Some Lady Jay alumni have come back to coach, and some volunteer when they are home from college. Teams practice two times a week and compete in tournaments as far away as Kansas City. Practices are held at the 12th Street Community Center and at various USD 475 gyms. Tournaments have been held at the 12th Community Center, Junction City Middle School, and the Karnes Building. Bridget stated that “when we host these tournaments 250-300 people contribute to our local economy by purchasing food and staying in hotels.”

Kayla shared that “in recent years more needs to be done to grow as a club and give players more opportunities in the off season to grow and get ready for the next season. They added Instructional volleyball clinics on Sundays for free to anyone girls ages Kindergarten through Sixth grade and recently added seventh and eighth grade. In the summer months and before Junction City and Fort Riley Middle School and Junction City High School volleyball tryouts Momentum hosts a three-day volleyball camp. During the camp the coaching staff goes over lots of drills and techniques to get players ready for their upcoming season.”
