RILEY COUNTY—A Manhattan woman was injured in an accident just after 1p.m. Tuesday.

A 2019 Jeep Cherokee driven by 71-year-old Beth Bergsten of Manhattan, was traveling near&nbsp; the intersection of Wildcat Creek Road and N. Scenic Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. 

The Jeep flipped into the trees near Wildcat Creek. EMS transported Bergsten to Via Christi for treatment of minor injuries. The RCPD released no additional details.

Legacy Kansas is the official name while the subtitle for the new restaurant in Abilene is Munson's Prime Steaks Brookville Family Style Chicken. Deanna and Chuck Munson purchased the former Brookville Hotel that has been closed for several months and have combined it with their former Munson Prime restaurant which was destroyed by a fire.&nbsp;

Deanna Munson said the history of both entities dates back into the 1800's. "The Brookville Hotel and the family that started it goes back to 1870. If you look at the Munson history of establishing the meat which is the reason why we had the restaurant, Munson's Prime, that all started in 1869 when Carl Munson came to Junction City." Munson began to acquire cattle and in 1924 the family went to a registered cow herd. Munson's Prime was opened in 2014. "So we're talking legacy of both entities."

Deanna said right now reservations only are required to eat at Legacy Kansas. Challenges hiring enough staff to do walk in open seating is the reason why. Currently about 100 people can be served. "This facility could seat 225 people at a setting, but right now we have 12 people ( employees ). We need 40 to 50 employees in order to truly do the whole thing. "

At this point the restaurant is serving the fried chicken dinner with all of the sides that the Brookville Hotel served. They are also serving an option of country fried steak instead of the chicken. Eventually there will be gourmet steaks and burgers served, and at that time there will be a plated menu as well as the family style chicken dinners. Later homemade Munson ice cream will be served, and in the meantime Call Hall ice cream is being brought in from K-State.

The restaurant is open 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday, and 11 until 2 and 4:30 - 7:30 on Sundays. You can make reservations at legacykansasabilene.com or by calling 1-785-200-3973 Thursday through Monday from 2:30 to 6:30.

One thing that has already occurred is the location of the diner's cities. They have come from numerous cities in Kansas.&nbsp;

Long awaited dining destination opens in Abilene

Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Kansas Chapter 21-1 will host their annual 9 / 11 Dice Run to benefit local Soldiers and Veterans.

The event is scheduled on Sept. 10 with registration going from 9 - 10 a.m. at City Cycle Sales in Junction City. The first bike is out at 9:30 a.m. and the last bike at 10:15 a.m.&nbsp; The last bike will be due in at 4:30 p.m. at the American Legion in Chapman.

There will be breakfast available for purchase.&nbsp;

Cost per card for the run is $15 for the first one, $5 for an additional card and $1 for a bug Dot challenge. Pay outs for highest overall score, lowest overall score and 100%&nbsp; payout for the Bug dot.&nbsp;

Raffle tickets will be available on site for the raffle to be awarded at&nbsp; the final stop in Chapman. The cost is $20 for a stretch of tickets and $1 per ticket.

There has been a vacancy on the Geary County Public Building Commission for a few months. County Commissioner Keith Ascher said that they want to open it up to the general public. Geary County Commissioners received an update this week on the financial needs for the Fresh Start Emergency Shelter. Alex Tyson, Commission Chair, said the Shelter needs funding to help with staff and providing basic services. "From noon until four they are able to provide one meal a day, "but they're looking for possibly growing and getting some staff in there to fill longer hours."

Tyson said Shelter officials did not have a specific funding request. In recent weeks the County had stopped providing funding for the facility but Tyson noted that the governing body may look at giving the Shelter the amount that the County had authorized for this year. There would still have to be a determination on an amount for 2023.

Just after noon Monday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 200 block of Springboard Lane in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;The City of Manhattan reported an unknown suspect smashed three large glass windows while trying to gain entry to City Pool. 

Authorities are working to get an estimate on the total loss associated with this case.&nbsp; Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=353#">Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers</a>. Geary County Commissioners will conduct a Town Hall meeting on Aug. 25th at 6 p.m. at the C.L. Hoover Opera House to inform the public about Geary Community Hospital. Local officials have been working on a $32 million bond issue to help the financially challenged GCH make it through the year until Jan. 1st when Stormont Vail is scheduled to assume oversight of Geary Community.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A 7-year-old Kansas boy injured in a 3-vehicle crash August 10 in Pottawatomie County has died.

&nbsp;On Saturday, 7-year-old Korbin Tinkel of Wamego died from injuries in the crash that also took the life of his father, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

&nbsp;Just after 5:30p.m. Wednesday,&nbsp;a 2015 Western semi driven by&nbsp; Mark E&nbsp;Stanwix, 44, Lecompton, was eastbound on U.S. 24 just west of Airport Road.

The semi rear-ended a 2008 Ford Edge driven by Megan K. Schindler, 34, St. Mary's, who was slowing and coming up behind a 2013 Ford F250 driven by Randy L. Tinkel, 37, Wamego, who was stopped waiting to make a left turn.&nbsp; The impact pushed the semi and Ford Edge into the pickup.

The Ford Edge came to rest on its side north of the roadway. The Ford F250 came to rest on the south side of the roadway on its roof. The semi&nbsp; came to rest on the south of the roadway in a field.

Randy Tinkel was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Stewart's Funeral Home.

EMS transported a Korbin Tinkel and a 2-year-old boy in the pickup to Children's Mercy.&nbsp; EMS transported a third passenger in the Ford F 250 Jillian C Tinkel, 36, Wamego, to Wamego Health Center.

EMS transported Schindler to Stormont Vail. Stanwix was not injured. The 2-year-old in the Ford was the only occupant properly restrained, according to the KHP.

According to a release from the Public Works Department only brush and tree limbs will be accepted. The service will be free for Geary County residents and $15 per ton for commercial customers.

According to Nichole Mader, Director, there were a total of 7,009 items collected including:

School supplies for children were donated to 19 schools including all schools in USD 475, St. Xavier and Chapman USD 473.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Officials with two of the pillars of community health in Kansas acknowledged their shared history and the importance of working together for the well-being of the state’s citizens.&nbsp;

“When I talk to extension professionals in the field, the word I use when referring to public health is ‘ally,’” said Elaine Johannes, the Kansas Health Foundation’s Distinguished Professor of Community Health at Kansas State University.&nbsp;

“Each of our organizations has our particular role, but being allies for Kansas communities is important. From extension’s point of view, being an ally with public health is especially important because public health sees things going on before we are even aware.”&nbsp;

Shelly Schneider, a state public health nurse specialist with the Kansas Department of Health and the Environment, said there are 100 local health departments serving 105 Kansas counties.&nbsp;

Local offices are supported by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kalhd.org/" target="_blank">Kansas Association of Local Health Departments</a>.&nbsp;

Schneider said Kansas’ system of public health is de-centralized, meaning that a Board of Health (often the county commission) establishes and oversees each local health department, and decisions are made locally together. “Every (local) health department,” she said, “needs to make sure they are meeting their county’s needs.”&nbsp;

The span of offices across the state and local decision-making are trademarks of public health and extension. Both systems have been in existence for more than 100 years. In some circles, Kansas’ extension system is considered the first of its kind in the country; public health shares a similar standing.&nbsp;

“It’s kind of cool when you look back at the history of public health in Kansas and understand how it impacted the whole United States in the development of public health in other states,” Schneider said. “I’m sure extension led the way, as well.”&nbsp;

Schneider said she began her career in public health in a local office – a role similar to a local extension agent. Public health offers programs addressing WIC (Women, Infants, Children), air quality, nuisance violations, immunizations, maternal child health, family planning, chronic disease, pregnancy, emergency health preparedness and more.&nbsp;

“Public health is not only the health we all think of,” said Schneider, alluding to physical health. “It can be safe transportation, safe neighborhoods, reducing violence…”&nbsp;

“When I was at the local level, I always had the mindset that if it wasn’t offered in our community, and the community needed it, it was the public health department’s job to figure out how to meet the need,” she said. “We were the safety net under all of the other programming in the community. If a topic kept falling through all of those other nets, we were there to catch them.”&nbsp;

However, the recent pandemic, retirements and people leaving the profession have left the state’s public health system a bit short, according to Schneider.&nbsp;

“One of our biggest challenges right now is building the capacity to make sure we have people who want to become doctors and nurses and respiratory therapists and aides and more,” Schneider said. “Anybody who wants to participate in health is welcome. We are feeling a huge attrition and shortage across the board.”&nbsp;

Public health services, she added, are often taken for granted.&nbsp;

“When my family hears me talk about public health, they just know that people have it handled,” Schneider said. “But if we start having a decline in public health offices and work force, people are going to start feeling that, and it’s going to be a thing that nobody can take for granted anymore.”&nbsp;

As I was outside with my kids waiting for them to catch their big yellow bus to begin another school year, I was reminded of how all of the back-to-school excitement is similar to the anticipation of fall on the farm. Being that it’s a new school year, the kids are understandably excited to return to school. This has translated to them getting out to their bus stop with plenty of time to spare ensuring they don’t miss the bus and avoiding frantic, last-minute morning chaos. As we get closer to the start of fall harvest, we are also getting out into the fields and testing the moisture of the corn with plenty of time to spare. While some might argue it’s still too early, just like with the kids, we want to make sure we experience a smooth transition into fall harvest with as little unnecessary chaos as possible.&nbsp; In the days leading up to the first day of classes, our school district provided us with a rough estimate of when we should expect the bus to arrive. Although we had a good idea of when to expect the bus, we knew to be ready a little before the expected time while also understanding if it was later.&nbsp; Just like the morning bus, we know fall harvest will get here. We’re not quite sure when exactly that will be; we just have to be ready to go when it’s time. While waiting for their bus, I reminded my two children to be observant as they have the tools needed to identify the bus and know when it’s coming minutes before actually seeing it. If one listens, amid the morning sounds of feed trucks and cattle in the distance, the distinct sound of the bus bouncing down the gravel roads can be heard. As adults, we too have tools to use to help determine when it’s time to harvest. While it might not be our sense of hearing, we do scout fields using our eyes to make observations while also picking and shelling ears of corn before testing for moisture. If we look, the distinct signs of a field that’s ready for harvest can be seen. Once on the morning bus, I watched the silhouettes of my two little ones cautiously walk down the aisle before committing and settling into their seats for the duration of their morning ride. I know both my son and daughter prefer to sit up near the front of the bus to avoid negative results like getting car sick or getting themselves into trouble. We will also be intentional in our field selections prior to committing the machines to a field as we want to make sure our decisions will not cause negative results like dockage once our grain is delivered to the elevator. As the bus slowly moved forward, I scanned the bus windows to see if I could spot any other morning riders. With the sun rising behind the bus, it appeared my two were the first ones on. The saying “first ones on, last ones off” has been true given our location within the school district’s boundaries and bus route. Being first on and last off the bus can make for some long and tiring days for my little kiddos.&nbsp; And just like the bus rides, fall harvest will also bring some exhausting days as expected. In either case, we know that at the end of these long days, whether we’re riding a school bus or driving a combine, we’ll all return and find comfort (and snacks) at home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There will be an archery draw for 40 deer hunting permits on Aug. 27th on the front lawn of the Milford Lake Corps of Engineers Office, 5203 N. Highway, K-57 Highway on the south end of the Milford Dam.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the draw for a hunting location is set for 9:30 a.m.

--Milford Fish Hatchery 1 permit, Former K-State Lease 4, East Rolling Hills Park 2, West Rolling Hills Park 5 permits, Curtis Creek Park 10, School Creek Park 10, South Timber Creek Park 2 permits, North Timber Creek Park 4 and Farnum Creek Park 2 permits.

According to the Corps all hunters must be present, and a Photo Id is required to register. Crossbows will not be allowed except for disabled hunters, &amp; mentor youth, which is an option at some locations.

JC Breakfast Optimist Club members will have a fundraiser at JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill from 11:00 AM until closing, Tuesday, August 16.  JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill will donate 10% of the price of purchases made all day. The Optimist Club supports 17 Geary County youth activities and makes donations each year. 

 Donations to the club are also being accepted.

With the recent upgrade of Junction City water meters there some features that will allow for improved customer service.

Lindsay Miller, Finance Director, noted that one new feature gives city officials the ability to be notified of possible leaks. The customer service manager has been working to notify customers of potential leaks as the system brings up an alert. Be sure your information is up to date with the customer service office so the City can notify when necessary.&nbsp;

As a friendly reminder owners of property are responsible for the lines on the owner's side of the meter on the property. If a leak is registering with the meter, it would be the property owners responsibility. If the leak is on the City side, it would not register with the meter.

Geary County Commissioners will get a report Monday about 2:15 on the status of the Fresh Start Emergency Shelter. The Shelter has been open about four hours per day and officials have been hoping to open the facility at 136 West Third Street on a fulltime basis in late September.

The Commission will be in session from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at the County Office Building.

Geary USD 475, Saint Xavier and Chapman schools return to the classroom this week for the fall semester.

The first day of school for all new USD 475 students in any grade and returning students in grades 1-5, grade 6 at the middle schools, and grade 9 at the high school is a half-day Tuesday, Aug. 16th.. Returning students in grades 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12 start with a full day Wednesday, Aug. 17th.

Early Childhood and Kindergarten students start with a full day Friday, Aug. 19th.

No breakfast or lunch will be served Aug. 16th.

Saint Xavier students return to school on Tuesday, Aug. 16th.

Chapman USD 473 students begin classes on Thursday, Aug. 18th with school that day out at 1 p.m.

Pooch Plunge ends the season for the Junction City Pool

Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran said the Sergeant First Class (SFC) Heath Robinson Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act of 2022 was signed into law this week and that the legislation was really years in the making.

"It's been a topic that we've worked on, in a sense, piecemeal," Moran said. "With the signing of the PACT Act into law this week, it really does take a major step. It's the most significant toxic exposure legislation that's passed Congress in our country's history."

the SFC Heath Robinson Honoring Our PACT Act of 2022 will: 

Expand VA health care eligibility to Post-9/11 combat veterans, which includes more than 3.5 million toxic-exposed veterans;

Create a framework for the establishment of future presumptions of service connection related to toxic exposure;

Add 23 burn pit and toxic exposure-related conditions to VA’s list of service presumptions;

Expand presumptions related to Agent Orange exposure;

The bill includes Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Guam, American Samoa, and Johnston Atoll as locations for Agent Orange exposure;

The bill will strengthen federal research on toxic exposure;

The bill will improve VA’s resources for toxic-exposed veterans and training for VA health care and benefits professionals;

It also is designed to let VA and veterans up for success by investing in:

Moran notes that just because it is now law doesn't mean everything is fixed yet.

"There's not ribbons to be cut and whistles and bells to be sounded," Moran said. "The practical reality is the department of veterans affairs struggles to implement major pieces of legislation and to do it in a way that really cares, that takes care of our veterans. From a what's next perspective for me it's to make sure that, most recently, the PACT Act is not just words on a piece of paper, but actually makes a difference in the lives of veterans."

Senator Moran spoke back in 2014 at the Vietnam Veterans of America National Leadership Conference in Wichita and heard from Kansas veterans and their families about the effects of Agent Orange and those conversations helped inform a series of pieces of legislation that culminated in the PACT Act.

Performers will be skating on the stage of the C.L. Hoover Opera House during the Circus on Ice show on Sept. 16 in Junction City.

Opera House Co-Directors Joe and Sheila Markley first saw the performance in Branson, Missouri. Sheila stated, "They were on stage singing and dancing and then all of a sudden somebody comes out in a pair of ice skates and they're skating. "Joe Markley said they're really using ice skates. "It's like a teflon floor they put down but it's slick and they can ice skate on it. " Real ice will not be used on the floor of the stage.

Joe Markley noted that the deal has just been signed to bring the show to the C.L. Hoover Opera House.

Junction City police have issued a statement via social media advising drivers that during the period of August 20 through Labor Day, September 7, the Junction City Police Department will join other police agencies across Kansas in a crackdown aimed at removing impaired drivers from the roadways during You Drink. You Drive. You Lose.  

It is illegal to drive while impaired, yet one person is killed in a drunk driving crash every 52 minutes in the United States. Just one drink before driving can put you and others in danger, because alcohol impairs thinking, reasoning and muscle coordination. 

Driving after consuming alcohol or any other potentially impairing substance is a choice you make. 

According to Chief of Police John Lamb, the You Drink. You Drive. You Lose enforcement campaign is intended to remind drivers to take a moment to consider how it would be to begin every day with the memory of your decision if it resulted in injury or death.  If you are driving impaired, you are not only more likely to crash, but that crash is much more likely to cause serious injury or death.   Think about your family, your friends, your coworkers, neighbors. 

Always wear your seat belt it’s your best defense against impaired drivers. The Police Department will&nbsp;vigorously enforce impaired driving and other traffic laws, not just during this enforcement campaign but all through the year in order to save lives.
