RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent incident at a residence in Manhattan.

Just before 11p.m. Saturday, officers responded to the report of a domestic incident in the 700 block of Dondee Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 28-year-old woman told officers a 31-year-old man known to her hit her, took her cell phone and threw it against a well when she attempted to call 911, moved a couch in front of a door to prevent her from leaving, and held a knife at her throat. 

Police found Bryan Mosley, 31,&nbsp; Manhattan on scene and arrested him on requested charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, domestic battery, criminal threat, intimidation of a witness, and aggravated assault. Mosley remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $80,000.

A 2015 Ford Mustang driven by Tyler Williams, 24, of Manhattan was westbound on Fort Riley Blvd. near South Seth Child Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

EMS transported Williams to Irwin Army Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, according to the RCPD.

Lisa Highsmith, Director of Programs and Education, said activities included coloring pages, magnet making and a pioneer challenge. "The challenge is to see if you can build a pioneer traveling trunk and if it can withstand the weight of all the things you have to pack for your journey as a pioneer. "

There was a sizeable turnout for the event, with the age range of those participating going from three to adult.

Geary County Historical Society hosted Kansas Day activities

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the 11700 block&nbsp; of Burley Hill Road for a single vehicle non-injury accident at 9:50 a.m. Saturday.

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie&nbsp;County farmer and rancher This past weekend was my favorite Kansas Farm Bureau event, the Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&amp;R) Conference. I am going to let you in on a secret, I am over 35. I know you are all shocked, and I am a bit surprised they still let me through the doors. I guess they either take pity on me or they let me in because I am on the state board of directors. Either way I am always happy to sneak in and get my batteries recharged. I think I have figured out the fountain of youth, and it is to spend time around this outstanding group of young farmers, ranchers, agribusiness people and students. Their enthusiasm and energy is contagious, even for an old guy several years past the YF&amp;R expiration date. The conference itself is outstanding. The keynote speakers and information shared is some of the best and most timely for those of us in agriculture. Then there are the breakout sessions and workshops, again some of the leading experts in their fields and cutting edge information. Include that with contests showcasing our industry’s best and brightest along with social events and you have a great weekend. The best part is it is planned, coordinated and put on by the Young Farmer and Rancher committee, the best and brightest members 35 and younger in Kansas Farm Bureau. Does it sound like I am bragging? I hope so because I am. We hear all the time about the aging agriculture industry and often pundits wonder where we are headed. Will our producers age out? Will we be able to feed a growing, hungry population? Spend a weekend at the Young Farmer and Rancher Conference and you know we will be in good hands. Spending time with this group will renew your faith in the future. I love listening to the conversations and hearing the new ideas and enthusiasm. This conference was crucial for Jennifer and I as we started our journey in agriculture. So many times you feel alone and it seems like no one understands what you are going through. Then you come to your first YF&amp;R Conference and find out there are many others going through the same trials and tribulations. The networking in the hallways and the friendships you make over the weekend are truly the most valuable part of the conference. We still have friendships that were forged during this conference. That is why each year I look forward to this weekend. I must admit I am being a little selfish because I know I get more out of it than I give to the participants I meet. This old guy is transformed back into a time when anything was possible and my career was ahead of me. I wish I could bottle the excitement and energy up for all of you, it is something we all need these days. I can’t do that, but I can go forth knowing agriculture is in good hands.

Faith in the Future of Agriculture

Geary County Food Pantry hosted the first Annual Pickleball Clinic on Saturday at the 12th Street Community Center.  Thirty five participants signed up for the clinic. 

Beth Fischer gave an introduction and overview of the clinic to the participants. This was followed by stretching warm up exercises before breaking the participants into six groups. There were six stations where the instructors taught different Pickleball game techniques. The groups were at each station for 15 minutes each.

 Once the basic instruction session was completed, the participants put their new skills together in some friendly games of Pickleball tournament play. 100% of fees and donations go to support the Geary County Food Pantry.

Thank you participants, coaches, volunteers and sponsors. including the Exchange Bank, R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation, Society of the  First Infantry Division and K-State Bank for donations to the Food pantry.&nbsp;

Pickleball Clinic supports the Food Pantry

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent altercation and have made an arrest.

Just before midnight Sunday, police responded to the Super 8 motel, 2207 North Buckeye Avenue, Abilene for the report of an earlier disturbance, according to a media release.

 Officers learned that a physical confrontation had occurred in a hotel room between a man and woman.

As a result of the investigation, officers arrested 32-year-old Jonathan Munoz Mateo of Kansas City, Missouri on requested charges that include attempted 2nd degree murder and aggravated battery. He is being held on a $100,000 bond, according to online jail records.

EMS transported the woman to the hospital for treatment of her injuries and she was released.

The college finished the year with 635 graduates&nbsp;—&nbsp;24% higher than any other Kansas institution&nbsp;—&nbsp;and more than 2,700 enrolled students. Approximately 300 among the 2022 graduating class of engineers are living and working in Kansas, a percentage higher than other peer institutions in the state. Raising this percentage is one of the goals of the recently renewed University Engineering Initiative Act passed by the Kansas&nbsp;Legislature, which provides support to engineering schools in Kansas through additional state funding. The College of Engineering leads Kansas institutions with 14 undergraduate degree offerings, with a pair of degrees added in 2022 in agricultural technology management and cybersecurity. Additionally, K-State engineering graduates continue to be in extremely high demand, with a 97% career placement rate and a reported high salary of $115,000, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/careercenter/about/stats/kstatepostgradstats/" target="_blank">data from the K-State Career Center</a>. Presentation of Banker's Awards were a highlight of the annual Geary County Conservation District meeting Thursday evening. Awards were presented for 2020, 2021 and 2022.

During the presentations Sarah Schmidt announced that Verle and Marie Amthauer were the 2020 winners. Their farm covers 320 acres in eastern Geary County along Davis Creek. The beginnings of the homestead were in 1892 when Verle's great grandfather, Andrew Amthauer, purchased 160 acres from the railroad. An adjoining quarter was purchased in 1897 for his son, John Amthauer.

Doug and Janette Vogelsang were the 2021 recipients. They live just west of Junction City on property homesteaded by Janette's ancestor Sam Ritter. The generational property has been in Janette's family for so long an adjoining road was named after the Ritter family.

The 2022 award recipients were Chuck and Jaye Otte. During the award presentation, Tyson Reimer of the Central National Bank, observed that Chuck, a retired agricultural extension agent,&nbsp; may have done more for conservation than anyone in attendance. Jaye had a long career with the Central National Bank .&nbsp;

Geary County is doing well in tourism economic impact studies. According to a newsletter prepared by CVB Director Donna Price the county has a 10.9 percent growth rate in tourism. That is because of the visitors that coming in and spending money.&nbsp;

Price noted that Geary County has a 14.6 percent share of the tourism market in the north central region of Kansas and a 1.4 percent share in the state.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – The USD 475 Board of Education decided unanimously to name the new $37.4 million school on Fort Riley ‘Morris Hill Elementary’. The decision was made to honor the history of Morris Hill on Fort Riley and to preserve the Blue Ribbon Award recognition accorded to the current Morris Hill Elementary in November 2022.

“The building and naming of a new school is always exciting.” Said the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Reginald Eggleston. “This new facility will allow us to continue supporting our students and families.&nbsp; I look forward to seeing and hearing about the great accomplishments our teachers and students will achieve in this facility.”&nbsp;

The school site was chosen to sit between contiguous post housing areas formerly served by two schools, with the goal of improving upon operating costs and administrative efficiency. Asked about the notable features of this build, Construction Project Manager, David Wild said, “When completed, it is believed that this project will provide Fort Riley with the newest inventory of schools in the Army. An impressive milestone for the partnership between Fort Riley, USD475, and the Office of Local Defense Communities Cooperative.”

According to Fort Riley records, Morris Hill is named after Major Louis T. Morris, who was stationed at Fort Riley around 1894. During a Cavalry and Light Artillery tactical exercise, it is reported that Major Morris and his squadron were successful in holding a hill commonly referred to afterward as Morris Hill. The colloquial reference stuck, and by 1904 it began to appear on military maps and those used by pioneers crossing over Mormon Road to Utah, which passed near today’s Post Headquarters.

New Fort Riley School to be Named Morris Hill Elementary

Junction City police are reporting the arrest of a 22-year old Junction City woman, Alyzah Benitez, in connection with the Aug. 22 death of Caytlin P. Hinkle, 19, Junction City. They said Benitez was arrested on the&nbsp; charge of Distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm or death. She was transported to the Geary County Detention Center where she is being held without bond pending a first appearance in Geary County District Court.

On Aug. 22 JCPD officers responded to&nbsp; a call of an unresponsive subject in the 1500 block of Patriot Drive in Junction City. Upon arrival officers discovered Hinkle unresponsive. EMS attempted to resuscitate her but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Following an autopsy, it was determined that Hinkle's cause of death was "Acute Fentanyl intoxication. "

Following a five-month long investigation, at approximately 3 p.m. Thursday detectives with the JCPD's Drug Task Force arrested Benitez.

Dana Wiegand, the Optimist Club’s coordinator of the Student of the Month program, shared information about Levi Mehl. Levi is the December JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s Student of the Month.

“Levi is a Senior at JCHS and is the Senior Class Secretary. He is active or has participated in Band, Baseball, Swimming, Scholar’s Bowl, Soccer, and the KAY (Kansas Association of Youth) Club.

Most recently, Levi was instrumental in a clothing drive at JCHS with the KAY Club in which hats, gloves, coats, socks and a variety of other clothing items were collected and will be distributed in the community. He currently has 77 hours of documented service-learning hours, which demonstrates his passion for community service.”

Mrs. Wiegand also that one of Levi’s teachers stated that ‘it had been an absolute pleasure to teach Levi in AP Language and have him as a Teacher’s Assistant for the last two years. Levi is such a kind soul and always carries himself with dignity and integrity. I know that I can always count on him to do his absolute best and encourage his peers in the process. He is one of the reasons I love showing up to work at JCHS.

Dana is also the Senior Class Sponsor and has worked closely with Levi. She said “ Levi always makes it a point to stop by my office to check-in on me. His genuine care and concern during my battle with cancer always brightens my day.”

Levi received a certificate from the Club, and $25.00 gift certificate to be used at JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill and a pass to the B&amp;B

Kansas Department of Transportation has awarded a bid for crack repair covering 2.3 miles from the north city limits of Junction City to the U.S. 77 / K-57 / K-244 junction to Pavement Pro's LLC of McPherson. The bid totaled $56,891.68.

KDOT also awarded a bid for milling and overlay on K-18 from about one-half mile west of Spring Valley Road east to about 475 feet west of Spring Valley Road. The bid was awarded to Shilling Construction of Manhattan for $192,730.

On Wednesday, officers filed a report for theft in the 600 block of Pecan Circle in Manhattan. UMB Bank and Manhattan Winsupply reported a business check was stolen from Manhattan Winsupply's mailbox by an unknown suspect and deposited, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,000.&nbsp;
