MANHATTAN —A man was injured in an accident just after 7:30a.m. Wednesday in Manhattan.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by&nbsp; Kara Catherine Ray, 47, Manhattan, was westbound in the&nbsp;1600 block Claflin Road just west of Mid-Kansas Drive.&nbsp;

The car struck a pedestrian identified as 62-year-old Randall Wayne Mai of Manhattan, who was walking north across Claflin Road not in a crosswalk.

EMS transported to Stormont Vail for treatment of serious injuries. Ray was not injured.

&nbsp; MANHATTAN — The Kansas State University Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian accident in the 1600 block of Claflin Road at approximately 7:30 a.m. Jan. 18, 2023. The pedestrian was transported to Ascension Via Christi.

Geary County Conservation District prepares for annual event

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club has recognized Bridget Vonspreckelsen for her work with the Momentum Volleyball program and her commitment to youth of various ages. Bridget is originally from Nebraska and played collegiate volleyball at the University of Alabama. She and her husband Eric, who is the Associate Pastor at First Christian Church in Junction City, have three daughters.

Her work includes coaching JC YMCA volleyball, being a co-founder of Momentum Volleyball with Kayla Ragan, helping to develop the JCHS Parent Support Group, and is involved with the work at her church. Momentum is a competitive volleyball organization that involves youth from Kindergarten through high school.

$100K project will target mental health, well-being&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Officials with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4hfoundation.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H Foundation</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.healthybluekansas.com/" target="_blank">Healthy Blue</a>&nbsp;have announced a partnership to invest in the mental health and well-being of Kansas youth.&nbsp;

According to information from the 4-H Foundation, Healthy Blue – a&nbsp;collaboration of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) and Anthem Partnership Holding Company&nbsp;– has pledged $100,000 to the initiative. &nbsp;

As part of the program, Kansas 4-H agents and youth will cover such topics as healthy coping skills, interventions, fitness, nutrition, life skills, healthy peer-to-peer interactions, and the prevention of substance abuse/addiction at a local level through community conversations. &nbsp;

“Creating a culture of learning where youth and adults are involved in a collective effort is crucial to addressing mental health concerns in Kansas,” said Sarah Maass, state leader for the Kansas 4-H program. “Addressing the health and wellness of youth in a safe and inclusive environment is a top priority for Kansas 4-H professionals.&nbsp;We want to put Kansas 4-H youth in the position to facilitate the conversation and take the lead on addressing the issues.”&nbsp;

Kansas 4-H officials said that through the immersive learning experiences that 4-H offers, kids can create meaningful relationships, learn coping skills, and discover independence.&nbsp;

“Kansas 4-H delivers these experiences through 4-H clubs, which become a learning community for positive youth development,” Maass said. “These experiences expand into schools and after school programs.”&nbsp;

Kansas 4-H, she adds, is committed to meeting the essential needs of youth, including belonging, independence, mastery and generosity.&nbsp;

Charmekia Martin, director of growth and engagement for Healthy Blue, said the initiative aims to create and deliver solutions that respond to the needs of individuals while removing unnecessary processes, closing gaps in care, and making measurable impacts in improving the health of entire communities.&nbsp;

“We are pleased to be able to support (the effort to better) mental health for youth in Kansas while partnering with Kansas 4-H in the creation of this new and innovative program,” she said.&nbsp;

Mindy Weixelman, the interim president and CEO of the Kansas 4-H Foundation notes the organization’s commitment to empower young people with the skills to lead for a lifetime, saying “we believe in the power of young people.”&nbsp;

Just after 2:30p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for arson in the 800 block of Pottawatomie Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp; 

&nbsp;A 75-year-old woman reported a 28-year-old woman started a fire inside the victim's home.

When fire crews arrived, they found a small fire in the front room of the house, with smoke throughout the residence. Firefighters had the fire contained within 10 minutes, according to a media release from the Manhattan Fire Department.&nbsp;

The one-story single-family home was estimated to have sustained $10,000 in damages. There were no injuries.&nbsp;

 At 2:35 p.m., the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire 807 Pottawatomie Avenue, according to a media release.

One dog escaped the fire after firefighters opened a back door.&nbsp; No injuries were reported. The building is a one-story, single-family dwelling. Loss is estimated at $10,000. The owner is listed as Charles and Glenda Fletcher of the same address. The fire cause is under investigation at this time.

This is the last week for depositing your Christmas trees for recycling at the corner of 14th &amp; Jackson streets in Junction City.&nbsp; On Saturday at 9 a.m. Geary County Fish and Game Association members will be loading them up and moving them to Milford Lake for building wildlife habitat.&nbsp; Be sure to remove all decorations and stands before adding to the pile of trees.

Geary County Commission Chairman Keith Ascher provided an update Tuesday on a recent roundtable discussion about the fairground property and the entities involved. "There's a lot of confusion about who owns what, who is in charge of what, who oversees what. "

There were breakout sessions for each group and what they're responsible for handling. Their next step will be to look through memorandums of understanding.

Ascher called it a good meeting and also noted that they need to try and get that site on city sewer service. "They're on rural water now. They'd like to go on city water.&nbsp;

Ascher also reported on the recent Economic Development Advisory Committee meeting where it was noted that the proposed Veterans Home for Geary County will not happen here. The next childcare meeting is scheduled Jan. 31.

NEW YORK (AP) — Some are&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/libraries-american-library-association-book-banning-af7c9f312266b572c3dc189b1d109de4">fighting local efforts to censor books,</a>&nbsp;while others are focused on cultural programs, education&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine">about Ukraine</a>&nbsp;or helping people buy groceries: These are this year's winners of the I Love My Librarian Award.

Based everywhere from Manhattan, Kansas and New York City to Carencro, Louisiana, the winners share a common desire to work closely with their patrons.

“Even in these unprecedented times and as our nation’s library workers face historic levels of intimidation and harassment due to an ongoing wave of book censorship, librarians continue to empower their patrons, teach critical literacy skills, promote inclusion in their space and collections, and provide vital services for their communities,” American Library Association President Lessa Kanani'opua Pelayo-Lozada said in a statement Tuesday.

Each of the 10 honorees will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a $750 travel stipend to attend the library association's LibLearnX event later this month in New Orleans. The awards are based on nominations from library users around the country and made possible by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and support from the New York Public Library.

Winners include&nbsp;<a href="https://ilovelibraries.org/love-my-librarian/tara-coleman/">Tara Coleman</a>,<a href="https://lib.k-state.edu/about/our-people/tara-coleman/">&nbsp;based at Kansas State University</a>&nbsp;in Manhattan, Kansas. She led a<a href="https://ilovelibraries.org/love-my-librarian/tara-coleman/">&nbsp;campuswide common</a>&nbsp;reading program. Kathryn Blackmer Reyes of the San Jose State University library in San Jose, California, cited for how she promoted untold stories by Asian Americans, Native Americans and Hispanics among others. At the Highlands County Library System in Sebring, Florida, Vikki Brown successfully pressed for a grant to set up a mobile library for the rural population.

Cara Chance of the Lafayette Public Library, in Carencro, Louisiana, has battled efforts by the library's Board of Control to restricts books with LGBTQ themes and David Ettinger, at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., who is working with students on their research skills.

At Childs Elementary School, in Bloomington, Indiana, Julie Marie Frye is helping kids learn more about Ukraine in the wake of the Russian invasion. Lauren Ginsberg-DeVilbiss, of the Wright Brothers School in New York City, is helping students grow a community garden. Students at Christ Church Episcopal School, in Greenville, South Carolina, are receiving help from librarian Jamie Gregory in learning about censorship and the meaning of intellectual freedom.

Roseanna Gulisano, at Highbridge School in New York City, has worked to raise money for more books for students who can't afford to buy them, along with funds to buy food and clothing. At the Evanston Public Library in Evanston, Illinois, Elacsha Madison has focused on teen programs in marginalized communities.

The awards were established in 2008. This year, judges at the library association chose the winners from more than 1,500 nominations.

K-State librarian earns national I Love My Librarian award

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann is serving on the House Agriculture Committee again. That's important because this is a Farm Bill year.

"Our current Farm Bill, these are five-year bills, expires Sept. 30 of this year," Mann said. "Getting that right for agriculture and for rural Kansas will be incredibly important. We'll put a lot of effort and focus there. We have been and we'll continue to do that until we get that done."

The new Republican Agriculture Committee chair is&nbsp;Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson from Pennsylvania. Thompson visited Kansas last year.

"We toured a farm, feedyard and ethanol plant and had some other meetings around the district," Mann said. "I enjoyed introducing him to our ag producers. I'm excited for the Ag committee under his leadership."

Mann is hoping to get a legislative hearing in the Farm Bill process brought to Kansas.

"I'm optimistic that we'll be able to have a field hearing in our state," Mann said. "That's not a promise, but that's something I'm working towards. We are not going to like the Farm Bill we get if we don't have ag producers input and stakeholder input in it. It's incredibly important to me and we've been meeting with people and listening to folks."

Mann is back out on his Big First town hall meeting tour this week.

Mann is back on Ag committee

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary involving military equipment in Manhattan.

Just after 6:30p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 900 block of Bluemont Ave. in Manhattan.

 A 21-year-old man reported his car was broken into and his military-issued Improved Outer Tactical&nbsp; Vest, helmet and license plates were stolen. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,300.&nbsp;

RCPD reports burglary of man's military equipment 

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged ID theft in Manhattan.

Just before 11a.m. Monday, police arrested 38-year-old Austin Swafford, of Manhattan in connection to the theft of a 19-year-old man's wallet and financial cards. 

Swafford is being held on requested charges that include seven counts of felony criminal use of a financial card, one count of felony theft and one count of obstruction after he used the stolen financial cards to make purchases at multiple locations. 

He remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $20,000.

Abilene, Kan.-A new temporary exhibit is now open at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in the Special Exhibits Gallery. By the Numbers showcases paintings from the Eisenhower Library's own collection.

Paint by number kits became increasingly popular in the 1950s. They were so popular that Eisenhower’s scheduling secretary handed out kits to many of the Oval Office visitors with instructions to complete and return their kit. This pet project of Thomas Edwin Stephens resulted in a humorous and treasured gift to President Eisenhower. Aware of Ike's fondness for painting, this 'curated exhibit' was proudly displayed around the White House West Wing. Today, this collection forms the core of the Eisenhower Presidential Library’s exhibit, By the Numbers. Come visit and take a nostalgic look at these friendly, thoughtful gifts to the “painter president.”

Downtown Junction City will be the location for a Main Street Market on Saturdays, May 6 - Oct. 28. Terri Butler of Main Street, said it will run from 8:30 a.m. until 1 :30 p.m. and if all goes according to plan it will be in different areas. "So the Farmer's Market will be across from the Fire Department, the Makers Market will be behind the Central National Bank. There will be music, contests, competitions, events activities in the grassy properties across from Godfrey's Shooting Range.&nbsp;

Butler cited one possible example. "One example might be that the Brigade baseball team might be coming in to set up some kind of baseball clinic and promote the events that are going on through the baseball."&nbsp; Butler added that throughout the entire community there will be different things. It is all in the planning right now.

Recent federal legislation contained funding for barracks planning at Fort Riley. That bodes well for possible future growth at Fort Riley. That was one topic for discussion at a recent Military Affairs Council Advisory Committee discussion in Junction City.

Board member Phyllis Fitzgerald touched briefly on childcare. "There is a big concern in our community and on Fort Riley so they're looking at different ways to come together to try to tackle the problem with childcare."

The new Morris Hill Elementary School is under construction at Fort Riley.

USD 475 is proposing to build a 32-classroom early childhood center on the site of the former Junction City High School. Grant funding will be sought to help pay for a portion of the project.

Agenda items will range from weekly reports by Finance Director Tami Tobison, HR Director Crystal Malchose and County Clerk Rebecca Nordyke to a bi-weekly report from Public Works Administrator CoreyTrumpp.

Oscar winning screen writer Kevin Willmott delivered the keynote remarks at the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in Junction City. He told a large audience at the C.L. Hoover Opera House that Junction City is now an example, " of the multiracial democracy that America want to be. "

Willmott remembered during his time growing up that Junction City did not celebrate that diversity. "It was ashamed of it. Junction City always had this bad reputation. Of course part of it was from Ninth Street, but the other part of it was because it was so diverse."

Willmott said Junction City residents need to embrace who they are. "We need to celebrate who we are, we need to tell the world who we are."

The program also included a singing performance of "Glory" by Justin Aaron, recently a contestant on NBC's "The Voice," and Jerel D. McGeachy Jr. with his "I've been to the Mountaintop" remarks.

There was a march to 10th and Washington where the fourth in a series of Junction City First statues was unveiled.
