Fort Riley will host its first full-service Military Retiree Appreciation Day since 2019 on Saturday, Oct. 22. Military retirees of all services, and their spouses, widows or widowers are invited to Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Avenue, Fort Riley. Doors open for registration at 7:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 8:30.

Throughout the day guests will hear the latest information on TRICARE, Medicare, Irwin Army Community Hospital services and other health care issues, veteran affairs, legislative issues, casualty affairs, long term care insurance and many other topics of concern to military retirees. Many veterans service organizations will also be on hand to provide information to attendees.

The public health team from Irwin Army Community Hospital will provide vaccinations from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for influenza, shingles, and pneumonia.

The lunch hour will include entertainment from an area barbershop quartet. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Buick Park Avenue driven by Joshua W. Matthews, 37, Herington, was northbound on U.S. 77 three miles south of Herington.

WASHINGTON COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 2p.m. Wednesday in Washington County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Mack Cement Truck driven by&nbsp; Camran B. Bruna, 22, Hanover, was southbound on Kansas 148 Highway seven miles south of Hanover.

The driver lost control of the vehicle when it blew a driver's side tire.

The truck overturned onto its passenger side in the northbound lane and struck a 2017 Honda CRV driven by Cameron B. Gray, 37, Fairbury, Nebraska. 

After impact, both vehicles entered the east ditch. The cement truck's drum came unattached and also came to rest in the ditch south of the vehicles.&nbsp;

Gray was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Ward Funeral Home. EMS transported Bruna to the hospital in Hanover. The KHP did not have seat belt usage information.

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a single vehicle accident in the 6000 block of Davis Creek Rd. Elwin Roberts, Dwight, was traveling northbound in a Chevrolet Silverado when a donkey was struck in the roadway. Roberts was not injured.

Valley View Senior Life has announced that Cydni Washington has been hired to serve as Director of Social Services. She is from Hutchinson but has lived in Junction City for many years. Washington is a graduate of Kansas State University and received a degree in Social Work in 1996.

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a a suspect after a high-speed chase on Interstate 70.

Just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, an officer with the Salina Police Department observed a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche with an expired license plate leaving the parking lot of Flying J Travel Center, 2250 N. Ohio Street, and heading north on N. Ohio Street, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

The officer attempted to stop the pickup as it was turning eastbound onto Interstate 70, but the pickup took off and a pursuit ensued. Speeds reached up to 100 mph, according to Forrester.

The officer terminated the pursuit at the Dickinson County line, but Dickinson County Sheriff's deputies were later able to stop the pickup and take the driver, identified as Tyrone Fenton, 43, of Salina, into custody on requested charges of Possession of marijuana, Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body, Possession of stimulant, Driving while a habitual violator; 3rd or subsequent conviction, Driving while suspended; 3rd or subsequent conviction, Yield emergency vehicle; Fail; Unknown circumstances, and Vehicles; Operate vehicle without registration or w/expired tag.

Requested charges in Saline County include Felony flee and elude, Speeding, Driving while suspended and a Vehicle registration violation.

Just after 4:30p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery in the 400 block of Leavenworth Street in Manhattan. 

A 34-year-old man reported a known 45-year-old man stabbed him on an unspecified date.

Additional details on the incident were not released by RCPD.

The Academy is for selected high school sophomores to learn personal goal setting; leading a group in a decision making process and community leadership.  Macie’s personal goal is to become a licensed psychologist.

Food and drink will be sold at 6:30pm and music will begin at 7:00pm. &nbsp;This Octoberfest themed event will feature three local music groups: The McDowell Barnburners, The Tallgrass Tunesmiths, and Chris Biggs and Ken Gustin. Baked goods and a beer list that includes: Free State Octoberfest, Heineken, Stormchaser, Free State IPA, and Hamm’s will also be available by donation.

Geary County Historical Society Curator Heather Hagedorn said all proceeds benefit the St. Joseph’s restoration project. Recent projects at the church include: new windows, roof repairs and the installation of electricity. Funds raised at this event will help cover costs for upcoming projects including: temperature control and plaster work.

St. Joseph’s Historic Church is owned by the Geary County Historical Society and the restoration is greatly supported by the McDowell Creek Community. To get to St. Joseph’s take I-70 to exit 307 and head south 2 miles. The church will be on the left. Carpooling is recommended as parking is limited.

MANHATTAN - More than 80 years after being killed while serving on the USS California, Seaman Second Class Pete Turk's repatriated remains were finally laid to rest at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Riley in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Born in Roseland Kansas, Turk enlisted in the US Navy on September 24, 1940 in Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 19.&nbsp;

On November 25, 1940, Turk reported for duty aboard the USS California, a flagship of the Battle Force.&nbsp;

On December 7th, 1941, the USS California was attacked by Japanese forces while moored at Pearl Harbor.&nbsp;

One hundred and four sailors and Marines, including Turk, were lost, following the severe damage caused by multiple torpedoes and bombs hitting the USS California.&nbsp;

In 2018, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency began to exhume the unknown remains associated with the USS California and had them reexamined using updated forensic technology and circumstantial evidence to identify the remains of Seaman Second Class Turk.&nbsp;

"The full counting mission of the Defense P.O.W. and Accountability Agency. Is there. That's their primary goal, is to account for every American service member that is unaccounted for in every foreign war that we served in. We take this very seriously in the VFW and support that program and definitely encourage Congress to support D.P.A.A. with funding to, to bring home every one of our service members." Kansas VFW P.O.W. M.I.A. chair, David Babin says.&nbsp;

Turk was honored with a funeral service with military honors and a final resting place in the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Riley in Manhattan.&nbsp;

"As the Kansas VFW P.O.W. M.I.A. chair, I strive to not only have the VFW post VFW as participate in these programs, I encourage the community to, to participate and to spread awareness to the public that we never forget a fallen comrade and that we will bring them all home, no matter how long it takes." Babin says.&nbsp;

Seaman Second Class Turk's remains were escorted by motorcycle riders from the American Legion Post 45 Junction City.

Match Day where pledges could be made to local organizations in Geary County ran all day Tuesday. There were a total of 1,258 gifts received equating to $341,487.29.&nbsp;

Donations have been strong for the Geary Community Match Day. Just before 11 a.m. the coordinator, Calvin Pottberg, noted that there had been donations totaling $165,000. For every dollar pledged 50 cents can be added to the total.

Geary Community Match Day sponsored by the Greater Geary Community Foundation is set for Tuesday. There will be a 50% match on gifts ranging from $25 to $1,000. $140,000 in matching funds will be available.

MARSHALL COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities and USD 364 officials are investigating a student who allegedly had a gun on campus.

On Friday, police&nbsp;responded to Marysville High School after an observant teacher overheard a student claiming to have a firearm in his vehicle, according to a media release.

  Numerous officers were dispatched and one student was taken into custody immediately. 

 No firearms were located in the vehicle.  Due to the student's age, police released no other information. 

Police said they are thankful for the teacher immediately reporting the incident and the school district contacting law enforcement immediately.

Fresh Start Emergency Shelter will benefit from a fundraiser breakfast at the American Legion Post 45 in Junction City this Saturday from 7-10 a.m.

The menu will range from biscuits and gravy to scrambled eggs and hash browns. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.

Tickets are available through the American Legion Post 45 Lounge or from officers of the Post. The meal is open to the public. Make checks payable to Fresh Start.

4-H Members Receive Special Awards at the Kansas State Fair

The Dorothy Bramlage Public Library in Junction City is celebrating Native American Heritage month with a series of events held from Saturday, October 22 to Monday, November 21.&nbsp;&nbsp;Entitled Native November:&nbsp;&nbsp;Sharing America’s First Stories, this period is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native People.&nbsp;

The series will kick off this Saturday, 10/22 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a visit from the Wichita Inter-Tribal Warrior Society.&nbsp;&nbsp;The society is made up of various Nations and describes what life was like for Native People on the Plains.&nbsp;&nbsp;Weather permitting, the event will be held outside on the library grounds and include a tipi to visit.

Next up will be a performance by Wichita War Dancer, Greg Victors, on Friday, November 4 at 6:00 p.m. at the C.L. Hoover Opera House. In addition to performing native dances, Victors will also help the audience learn more about Indigenous culture, offer the chance to ask questions, and the opportunity for audience participation.

The Dorothy Bramlage Public Library in Junction City is celebrating Native American Heritage month with a series of events held from Saturday, October 22 to Monday, November 21.&nbsp;&nbsp;Entitled Native November:&nbsp;&nbsp;Sharing America’s First Stories, this period is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native People.&nbsp; The series will kick off this Saturday, 10/22 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a visit from the Wichita Inter-Tribal Warrior Society.&nbsp;&nbsp;The society is made up of various Nations and describes what life was like for Native People on the Plains.&nbsp;&nbsp;Weather permitting, the event will be held outside on the library grounds and include a tipi to visit. Next up will be a performance by Wichita War Dancer, Greg Victors, on Friday, November 4 at 6:00 p.m. at the C.L. Hoover Opera House. In addition to performing native dances, Victors will also help the audience learn more about Indigenous culture, offer the chance to ask questions, and the opportunity for audience participation.  <li>Native Voices: Storytime on November 8 for children ages 10 months to 8 years old </li><li>Resurrecting the Warrior:&nbsp;&nbsp;The Great War, American Indian Soldiers, and Spiritual Transformations on November 12 at 4:00 p.m. This virtual program will focus on Native American participation in World War I. </li><li>Friday Night Live:&nbsp;&nbsp;Native Culture on November 18 at 6:30. Intended for kids in Grades 6-12, shamanic meditation, Native American dishes and creation of a ribbon shirt painting will be featured. </li><li>Native People in World War II’s Thunderbird Division, November 19 at 4:00 p.m. (virtual program) </li><li>Family Ribbon Skirt/Shirt Day, November 21, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. </li>
