Just after 7:30p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for theft and criminal damage to property in the 100 block of Manhattan Town Center, 102 Manhattan Town Center in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Dillards reported an unknown male suspect cut security wire and took 2 Louis Vuitton bags from the business.

I bought a bag and will make cranberry bread with it soon. It might seem odd in Kansas but, for me, those cranberries are one of the surest signs of fall and a reminder of home. Where I grew up, cranberries are a big deal. My parents live in the Wisconsin county with the highest number of acres in cranberry production in the U.S., most of their neighbors grow them, and I even took cranberry science in high school. I love sharing fun facts about cranberries like they do not grow in water. The image you may be thinking of where people are in hip waders with water past their knees is actually during cranberry harvest. Since cranberries are buoyant, the beds where they grow are flooded to make removing berries from the vines with a beater and then collection at one end of the bed easier. Cranberry growers also use water to protect their crop. Harvest is typically from the end of September through October, when the nights are getting cold enough that the berries are at risk of frost damage. &nbsp;Growers have alarm systems to alert them of dangerous temperatures. When the alarms sound, they start their irrigation systems to coat the berries in water. As the water freezes a process called heat of fusion occurs and enough heat is given off to protect the crop. The cold is a necessary part of the fruit’s development as lower temperatures contribute to deepening the berry’s red color, which can bring a premium on the crop. There is something inspirational about the fact that the closer cranberries come to being destroyed, the more they increase in value. There are actually lots of plant equivalents to the saying “what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.” Drought stressed wheat will have higher protein content. Giant Sequoia seeds can only germinate after a fire. Adversity is sometimes the most effective way for us to gain the character that we need to succeed in life. One particular memory from my childhood comes to my mind when I think about failure pushing us to be our best. When I was 11, I took tractor safety to get my permit so I could drive on public roads. Since I was a relatively inexperienced driver, my dad spent time with me practicing all the components of the test. My dad tried to be patient but to the delight of my older brothers, I was a natural at all the wrong moves, and I am sure my dad was embarrassed. Within the first 30 seconds of the test, I ran over a pole on the course, which gave me enough points that one more mistake would cause me to fail the test. However, I was determined to pass the test and prove to my brothers I could do it. I took a few breaths and proceeded through the course with as much skill and focus as an 11-year-old could muster. I didn’t make another mistake for the remainder of the test and received my certificate. That same lesson has repeated itself through my life dozens of times when I was on the verge of failure. In those moments, I learned important lessons in life and how capable I really am. We all could benefit from acting more like cranberries by realizing that the closer you get to failure, the bigger the reward will be.

Carita Whaley, Milford, was driving a Ford F-350 pulling a hay trailer when the vehicle was hit from behind by a Ford Fiesta driven by Mary Farley, Wakefield. Farley and her passenger were transported by EMS for minor injuries. A wrecker service responded to the scene and towed the Ford Fiesta.

Members of the Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel got an update Friday on local food needs from Geary County Food Pantry Director Debbie Johns. She said that "those in need of food include seasonal employees, young military families, those struggling with addiction and sometimes school district professionals who are unemployed during the summer months."

Johns also noted&nbsp; that there's a need to get information out in the community about the availability of food at the Food Pantry for those in need. In the past, boxes of&nbsp; food items were prepared and distributed but now they're distributing by choice. Fresh Food Friday is another newer approach to providing fresh produce for families.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you got an extension on the deadline to file your 2021 tax return, the IRS wants to remind you, your time is almost up.

"For those folks who got a six month extension, the deadline to file normally would be October 15," said Michael Devine with the IRS. "Since that's on a weekend, it goes to the next business day, which this year is Monday, October 17. That is the day that you need to file your tax return and avoid any chance of being tagged with a failure to file penalty."

The failure to file penalty&nbsp;is 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month that a tax return is late.

"It needs to be in the system by midnight on Monday, so that you don't have to worry about any penalties," Devine said. "You can do it yourself. There's a lot of ways to do that. <a href="https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free">IRS Free File</a>&nbsp;is still available. Just go to IRS.gov. Right at the top, the first box you see is File Your Taxes for Free. If you made less than $73,000, you can pick a company that you want to do your taxes, put all the information in, and it will go."&nbsp;

For taxpayers whose AGI is greater than $73,000, there’s the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/free-file-fillable-forms" target="_blank">Free File Fillable Forms</a>&nbsp;option. It provides electronic federal tax forms that can be filled out and filed online for free.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fort Riley's 26th annual Ghost Tours are Saturday from 4:30 - 8:30 p.m. The tours will begin at the Artillery Parade Field.&nbsp;

Maggie Moore, with the Historical and Archaeological Society of Fort Riley, said the tour of the historic Main Post will include stories of past and present residents. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The tours will run about 45 minutes.&nbsp;

The tours will focus on coming out of the pandemic and how Fort Riley was affected by earlier pandemics. The ghost tours are going to take a trip back in time to present a ghostly visual experience. There'll be stories told through the lense of many different perspectives," said Moore.

You can hear ghost tales about the Buckskin Ghost, the Lady in Black and the infamous Triangle House.

🎤Forward Ever: Hurricane Ian Red Cross volunteer Pete Peterson

Geary Community Healthcare Foundation Executive Director Tracy Geisler has reported that the Fall Classic Golf Tournament at Rolling Meadows Golf Course raised more than $50,000. On one hole on the course if participants gave $100 for their team they received a hole in one on their scorecard. "We had up to a $3,000 match this year from Central National Bank. On that hole alone we made $7,500 so that was really exciting."

The funds raised support the Foundation's mission to support the healthcare needs in Geary County.&nbsp;

Geary Community Healthcare Foundation Executive Director Tracy Geisler has reported that the Fall Classic Golf Tournament at Rolling Meadows Golf Course raised more than $50,000. On one hole on the course if participants gave $100 for their team they received a hole in one on their scorecard. "We had up to a $3,000 match this year from Central National Bank. On that hole alone we made $7,500 so that was really exciting."The funds raised support the Foundation's mission to support the healthcare needs in Geary County.&nbsp;

Geary USD 475 has announced that Brittany Scott is the USD 475 nominee for Elementary Kansas Teacher of the Year, while the Kansas Teacher of the Year candidate for secondary education is Michael Brown. 

Brown is the JCHS vocal music director and assistant coach for girls' soccer.&nbsp; Scott is a teacher at Ware Elementary School.

Stormont Vail Health has announced that Rep. Jake LaTurner visited with Stormont Vail leadership Wednesday at Geary Community Hospital to learn about future plans of the Junction City hospital. The Congressman met with Dr. Rob Kenagy, Tracy O’Rourke and Deb Yocum of Stormont Vail and Margaret Grismer, Geary Community Hospital. A tour of the hospital followed with Alex Tyson and Keith Ascher, Geary County Commissioners, and Tami Robison, the county finance manager.

Stormont Vail is managing the hospital until the end of the year, when it will fully takeover operations and integrate the hospital and rural health clinic into the Stormont Vail system. Stormont Vail has been working in partnership with Geary County, the hospital’s board of trustees and the county Public Building Commission to transition and stabilize the Junction City healthcare organization to ensure healthcare for the community in the future.

Live Well Geary County has announced that Konza Prairie Community Health Center is co-sponsoring Laundry Love JC along with Geary County Local Health Equity Action Team on Oct. 20. MORRIS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities including the FBI conducted an intensive investigation Wednesday a man accused in&nbsp; the robbery at Bank of the Flint Hills, 101 E MacKenzie Street in White City, according to the Morris County Sheriff.

Just after 10p.m. Wednesday, police captured 35-year-old Christopher J. Callaham of Junction City at a motel in Junction City.&nbsp;

Just after 10a.m. Wednesday, a man with a handgun and wearing a mask entered the Bank of the Flint Hills and demanded money from a clerk, according to the Morris County Sheriff's office.

The man was described as a white male with dark colored hair. He was wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and brown boots. He left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash and ran into a residential neighborhood south of the bank.

Officers from Council Grove and deputies from the Morris County Sheriff's office began searching for the suspect. School in White City were placed on lockdown.&nbsp; There were no injuries reported at the bank.

Callaham is being held in Geary County on a felony arrest warrant for aggravated robbery and&nbsp; two additional requested drug charges, according to online booking records.

The Robert E. And Patricia Schmidt Foundation recently donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross to help support recovery efforts following Hurricane Ian.

The Red Cross has dispatched multiple vehicles, which will most likely be deployed for weeks, and the foundation's gift will help support the volunteers manning the vehicles and help restock supplies.

"Our hearts go out to those effected by this devastating storm," said Schmidt Foundation Chairman Gary Shorman, "and we offer our sincere thanks to the Red Cross for offering much-needed assistance during this recovery.

Schmidt Foundation gift will aid Ian recovery efforts

MANHATTAN — Following a more than two-year pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/landon" target="_blank">Landon Lecture Series</a>&nbsp;returns with David M. Beasley, executive director of the United Nations' World Food Programme.

Beasley's lecture, "Kansas' Legacy in Global Food Security," begins at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union. Doors will open at 10 a.m. The lecture is free and members of the university community and public are invited to attend. Beasley is a champion of the fight against hunger. As the executive director of the World Food Programme, Beasley has mobilized resources to respond to an increasing need for food. In 2021, the agency helped feed more than 128 million people — a record number. Beyond emergency food assistance, Beasley and the World Food Programme also highlight how long-term development can help bring peace and stability to troubled regions. In 2020, under Beasley's leadership, the World Food Programme was awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.

Landon Lecture Series returns to Kansas State University Nov. 3

Two longtime music educators at Junction City High school, the late Charles Volland and Vaudene Field, are remembered by many people. Now they have been honored with the dedication of a Steinway Boston grand piano for use by performing arts students.

There was a dedication reception at JCHS on Wednesday where a plaque bearing the name of donors for the project was unveiled.

Volland and Field both were choral directors and taught in the music program for many years at JCHS.&nbsp;

Terrah Stroda, Vaudene's daughter, said they went on in different capacities with the school district as well until their respective retirements.

Stroda noted that the piano was a combined project. "We wanted to welcome the new high school, we wanted to honor our parents, and we wanted to celebrate music as a key integral part of Junction City High School."

Kathy Volland, Charles wife, said the piano was the culmination of hard work from different groups of people. "Charles started out here as a music teacher, a vocal music teacher and spent about 20 years of his life here ( JCHS ). He really enjoyed his time with the high school students."

Charles loved music, remembered his daughter, Jill Nelson. "That's where I get my passion and my love of music from, is my dad." Charles remained active in music after he became the communications coordinator for USD 475. He was involved with the Little Theater where he served as music director for shows and as a choir director.&nbsp;

It will occur in the Curtis Creek and Milford State Park areas near Milford Lake. The Hunt will be limited to five youth hunters and five mobility-impaired people with permanent disabilities.

On Oct. 6,&nbsp; five JCHS Transition Students performed community service by picking up food commodities from the Junction City Food Pantry and delivered several food orders to older adults who reside at the Bicentennial Manor. Jacky Robinson, Service Coordinator of Bicentennial Manor said that they were appreciative for the acts of kindness and service by the JCHS Transition Program. &nbsp;

Kelly Fulk, Transition Coordinator, says, this program has partnered with Bicentennial Manor over a decade and with I.C.A.R.E. in several intergenerational activities since 2016.

In the past, the students have provided community service to older adults at Brookdale Senior Living, and other locations in the community. Some of the tasks consisted of sweeping, vacuuming, taking out trash, walking pets, and other jobs as needed.

The USD 475 Transition Program is a post-secondary training that promotes job skills, life skills, and social skills for young adults.&nbsp;A transition plan helps students prepare for life after high school.
