RILEY COUNTY —After analysis and a follow up survey, it has been determined that a small EF-2 tornado occurred just before 7:30p.. Saturday June 11 in Manhattan, according to the National Weather Service.

The small brief tornado had a path of only 0.30 miles just east of the KSU campus, with maximum estimated winds to around 115 mph.

The National Weather Service originally said straight line winds caused nearly $10 million in damage.

Riley County officials said preliminary assessments found 41 residential and business properties were damaged, with 20 properties sustaining major damage and three homes destroyed.

 The weather service also said four EF1 tornadoes touched down in Marshall and Pottawatomie counties on Saturday night. No serious injuries were reported from any of the storms.

U.S. Army Forces Command announced that the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, “Dagger Brigade,” will execute an Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise to the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California.

“This is a critical training event for the Dagger Brigade and Fort Riley,” said Brigadier General Niave F. Knell, 1st Infantry Division Deputy Commanding General – Riley. “No-notice training exercises showcase our Army’s ability to rapidly deploy combat-credible forces anywhere they are needed.”

An EDRE is a no-notice, rapid deployment exercise designed to test a unit’s ability to alert, marshal, and deploy forces and equipment to an emergency disaster or for contingency operation. An EDRE tests the deployment readiness of active-component forces – in this case, Dagger Brigade.

The Dagger Brigade will prepare personnel and equipment for movement by air and surface transportation, conduct training and return to Fort Riley this summer.

As wheat harvest begins, farmers will have the opportunity to support Aging Well through the donation of grain. Aging Well is a non-profit organization that is raising funds to build a preferred senior living campus.

“Farmers work hard to produce generous harvests and want their donations to realize similar gains. In gifting grain, producers easily maximize their impact by transferring the grain directly to the beneficiary and excluding the crop sale from their income while still deducting the production costs, which can have very beneficial tax advantages to the producer,” stateD Duane Blythe, Aging Well Co-Chair of the Board of Directors. “The process is actually quite simple, the tax benefits are significant, and the financial support to Aging Well, Inc. is impactful.”

For a donor who is actively engaged in farming on a cash basis, there are significant tax savings that can be found through donating grain directly to Aging Well. The farmer designates a certain number of bushels of grain at the elevator and Aging Well gets the donation by selling the donated grain. You then get a tax deduction at a better rate than just a cash donation. Since many farmers take the standard deduction, no tax benefit is gained by making charitable gifts of cash. However, by directly donating grain to Aging Well, the cash basis farmer can exclude the sale of the grain from income, which can result in a triple tax savings. Another great benefit of donating grain is that Gifts of Grain can be donated from the current year or previous years’ harvests.

Aging Well at the Spring Valley Campus continues on their quest to raise $3.5 million which will be used to build a new senior living campus in Junction City. Blythe shared, “We have raised over $2.5 million of our fundraising goal, and we are grateful for those that have given.&nbsp;

Aging Well at the Spring Valley Campus will be a new senior living campus providing long term care and assisted living services in a small home, family style environment.

Gift of Grain can support Aging Well

TOPEKA —On Wednesday, the Kansas Board of Regents voted to hold tuition flat at state universities during the upcoming school year, something they were able to do because of the historic level of funding provided by the budget Governor Laura Kelly signed in May.

As part of her budget, Governor Kelly restored university funding to pre-pandemic levels to enable state universities to freeze tuition and knock down barriers to higher education.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The Regents are excited that students at state universities in Kansas will see no tuition increases next academic year,” said KBOR Chair Cheryl Harrison-Lee.

 “I’m thankful that Governor Kelly and the Legislature provided funding for flat tuition. Their partnership in this area, coupled with their support for increased need-based student financial aid, has helped us ensure affordability for Kansas families.”

This is the fourth year in a row that the Board has approved flat tuition for undergraduate resident students at the University of Kansas. Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University and Wichita State University have had no undergraduate resident tuition increases in three of the past four years.

“I’m pleased that my call to freeze tuition at state universities has been taken up, especially as pandemic-induced inflation impacts the lives of Kansan students and their families,” Governor Kelly said. “Continuing the streak of low-to-no tuition growth under my Administration ensures our state can maintain its workforce pipeline and keep higher education degrees attainable.”&nbsp;

Students at Kan. 6 state universities will not see a tuition increase

Burke's Outlet Store, 437 East Chestnut Street in Junction City is a chain department store selling apparel, housewares, shoes and accessories. The grand opening and ribbon cutting were held Thursday.

Store spokesperson Patricia Hatley said that the outlet is owned by Bealls Inc. based in Florida. "We sell furniture, we sell clothing. Our hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ,Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and then on Sunday 10 to 8."

RILEY COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage to property in the 700 block of Highland Ridge Dr. in Manhattan.

Just before 3:30p.m Wednesday, MH Development and a 52-year-old woman reported carpet, light fixtures, walls, a refrigerator, doors, cabinets, couch, mattress, glass tables, dresser, weight bench and more were damaged&nbsp; inside of an apartment, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $100,000.

RCPD investigating $100,000 damage to apartment

GEARY COUNTY&nbsp;–&nbsp;On Wednesday, June 15, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) executed search warrants at the Junction City Police Department (JCPD), and other police department facilities in Geary County, according to a media release from the agency.

The search warrants relate to an ongoing investigation into allegations made against certain personnel of the JCPD.&nbsp;

The KBI initiated this case on June 7. The involved JCPD personnel were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case. The police department is cooperating fully with the investigation.

Currently, no arrest(s) have been made.&nbsp;

Five first responder banners were recently put up in the downtown Junction City area.

Military Affairs Council Chair Nate Butler said recently you can still get one by notifying MAC. There is still time to put them up. The cost is $150.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The banners will be put up and then be given back to you when the time for this project is over in July. You can repeat the process using the same banner again next year for $25.

Spokesperson Laurie McCauley said that the program is designed to assist active duty and full-time National Guard service members under Title 10, U.S. Code, with family members with special needs through selective assignment and reassignment.&nbsp;

Any family member listed on the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System is eligible for assistance if there is a condition which limits that person's ability to&nbsp; function daily and / or requires ongoing counseling, training, education, therapy, treatment or care that requires a specialist even once a year.

One of the upcoming events sponsored by EFMP will be the annual Special Needs Rodeo where children will be Cowboying It Up on July 16&nbsp; from 10 a.m. until noon at the Junction City Rodeo Arena, 1107 Spring Valley Road. Children will ride a lead horse, learn to rope, experience a rocking bull ride and enjoy other activities.

Junction City Public Works has announced that there will be no trash/garbage pick-up by the City of Junction City on Monday, June 20th due to the Juneteenth Holiday.

However, trash/garbage pick-up will be picked up the next work day as follows:

Monday’s pickup day will be Tuesday, June 21st

Tuesday’s pickup day will be Wednesday, June 22nd

Wednesday’s pickup day will be Thursday, June 23rd

Thursday’s pickup day will be Friday, June 24th

RILEY COUNTY—A woman avoided serious injury after an accident just before 2:30p.m. Tuesday in Riley County.

A 2009 Buick Lucerne driven by Marilyn Johnson, 81, Riley, was northbound on Tuttle Creek Blvd. at Blue River Hills Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The Buick entered into the opposite lane and struck a southbound 2004 Ford dump truck driven by Garrett Huerter, 27, of Manhattan. EMS treated Johnson at the scene and released her. Huerter was not injured. The RCPD released no additional details.

As the associate dean, Pritchard is charged with significantly expanding the campus's scholarly productivity, increasing research funding, growing graduate enrollment and advancing K-State Salina's regional, national and international reputation as a global leader in aerospace innovation. He also will serve as K-State Salina's liaison to research units within the university, external funding agencies and the Graduate School. "I am honored to serve as associate dean for research and graduate studies and excited to be supporting Dean Starkey's expansive campus vision," said Pritchard. "Industry research and development funding is increasing; corporations are setting more money aside to work on integrating advanced technologies into their ecosystems. It is imperative that we cultivate innovative industry partnerships that support the research productivity of our talented faculty and, at the same time, design and deliver advanced industry matching educational experiences for our graduate students." Before arriving at K-State Salina, Pritchard worked as a hands-on technology executive for Deloitte, Macquarie Group Limited and Science Applications International Corporation. "Dr. Pritchard's 25 years of industry experience makes him ideal for this position to lead faculty and mentor students," said Alysia Starkey, K-State Salina CEO and dean. "His commitment to research will impact not only graduate students but also undergraduate students as they engage in innovative ways to solve emerging industry needs." Pritchard received his bachelor's in anthropology from the University of Kansas, a Master of Science in information systems from Northwestern University, and his doctorate in information systems from Dakota State University. His research interests include integrated machine learning, autonomous systems, cybernetic systems and information theory. His research has been published in Information Systems, Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences and IEEE Transactions on Professional Communications.

Pritchard will continue to lead K-State Salina's new Master of Science in integrated systems design and dynamics and the new&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academics/degree-options/master-aeronautics/" target="_blank">Master of Science in aeronautics</a>.&nbsp;

After a two-year hiatus the health and wellness event called the Sunflower Fair is returning to Salina. The North Central Area Agency on Aging has announced that the event, which is geared for older Kansans, people living with disabilities and caregivers, will be held Sept. 20 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.at Tony's Pizza Events Center.

Registration before Saturday, Sept. 10, is $20 and includes lunch. On-site registration after Sept. 10 is $25. To register in advance call the North Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging at 800-432-2703. Registrations are also accepted on the Agency's website www.ncfhaaa.com.&nbsp;

The Agency's Executive Director, Julie Govert Walter, called the Sunflower Fair a full day of trustworthy and practical information and good fun for Kansans of all ages. More than 600 people are expected to attend.

In addition to speakers and exhibits, those attending may choose from among the day's workshops. Sessions are slated in the morning and afternoon. There will be sessions on topics including medicare, cyber security for seniors plus legal issues older Kansans and their families.

Exhibitors are planning to provide COVID-19 and flu vaccines, hearing tests, blood pressure checks and other health screenings.&nbsp;

The show has all the songs from the Disney Classic. There will also be a Curtain Call for kids in grades K-2 where they will perform a 15-minute preshow.&nbsp;

National nonprofit Petco Love has given a $10,000 grant to the Junction City Animal Shelter.

The Shelter applied for the grant. Vanessa Gray, Director, explained that Petco Love is a nonprofit that provides grants to shelters and rescue. "The way they get those funds is when people go to Petco and they ask if you would like to donate at the register."

This is the fourth grant that the Shelter has received from Petco in recent years. "We are looking at doing a lot of community involvement with this one as well as something that helps the Shelter pets."

Junction City Animal Shelter work to find homes for homeless, abused and / or surrendered pets while educating the public on the important topics in animal welfare.

Edgar G. Arroyo during a ceremony on Cavalry Parade Field.

Fort Riley also said Command Sgt. Maj. Michael D. Dills II transferred responsibility to Command Sgt. Maj. George L. Foster Jr. It also said Regional Health Command-Central Commanding General Brig. Gen. Shan K. Bagby presided over the ceremony.
