Lifeguard shortages have affected the Junction City swimming pool this season. Parks &amp; Recreation Director, Nic Youngers, noted in the City Manager's recent 515 report that officials anticipated having 10 additional lifeguards this month. Out of the 10 candidates only two attended the lifeguard class and passed the pre-swim test.&nbsp;

Some week days including Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week the pool cannot be open. Wednesday and Thursday are normally closed days.

Youngers said the City is unable to hire more lifeguards because the last lifeguard for this season has closed. Pool hours and days of operation are subject to change on a weekly basis. Youngers added officials understand the frustration that causes and will do their best to keep a consistent schedule.

City deals with lifeguard shortage at the Swimming Pool

Geary County ranked third among Kansas counties that received the largest tax refunds in the state. That's according to a study done by SmartAsset, which using the most recent IRS data, divided the total amount of money refunded to residents in each county by the total number of refunds given out in each county.&nbsp;

Geary County ranked third with 15,140 residents receiving refunds, with the average tax amount refunded totaling $3,018.&nbsp;

The same study showed that 2,070 taxpayers owed taxes, with the average tax amount owed totaling $2,384.

K-State expert advises taking tick bites seriously&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. — All nature-loving Kansans have likely had one common lifetime experience — crossing paths with ticks. Many may wonder what to do when one is found on the body and how to reduce the likelihood of attracting them in the first place. &nbsp;

Kansas State University extension horticultural entomologist Raymond Cloyd said a tick’s primary role in the ecosystems is as a food source for vertebrates and other organisms.&nbsp;

“Ticks are a part of nature’s balance in our ecosystem and are commonly found in vegetative growth,” Cloyd said. “Because of all the rain that we’ve had, the environmental conditions have created conducive habitats for many ticks.”&nbsp;

He said ticks thrive in moist, humid conditions and can be found from spring through fall. &nbsp;

“If we start having dry, hot weather, that will likely decrease the tick population,” Cloyd said.&nbsp;

“Ticks reside in grassy areas near the soil and then they latch on to a host when they go by. The females need a blood meal in order to produce eggs,” Cloyd said. &nbsp;

To avoid picking up ticks, Cloyd offers the following tips:

Once arriving home, Cloyd advised removing clothes immediately and doing tick checks. He also encouraged people to put their clothes in the dryer at the highest setting to kill the ticks. &nbsp;

“Seed ticks are hard to spot because they are early in the larval stage of life, which is why we recommend taking a shower and doing a close check of your body when you come in from the outdoors,” Cloyd said. &nbsp;

If one finds a tick on their body that hasn’t latched on, Cloyd said to kill it by firmly squishing the tick to keep it from spreading to someone else in the house. &nbsp;

“It is important to identify the type of tick it is, but if it hasn’t latched on to the body, you should be okay,” Cloyd said. He added that most ticks will be found on the body below the shoulder.&nbsp;

However, if the tick has attached to the body, Cloyd said it is important to carefully remove the tick and then put it in a sealed bag so it can be identified, and go to the doctor’s office for evaluation.&nbsp;

Cloyd’s advised using tweezers to remove the tick.&nbsp;

“Put the tweezers as close as you can to the skin where the head of the tick is and then gently lift up as you move the tweezers back and forth,” Cloyd said. “Take the tick and go straight to the doctor’s office because they can prescribe treatments and intervene before the infection spreads in the body.” &nbsp;

He stressed the importance of identifying the tick type because specific varieties of ticks carry different diseases. &nbsp;

“Most of the ticks we have in Kansas are associated with some type of disease. You’ve got to take ticks seriously, especially if they become embedded in the skin,” Cloyd said.&nbsp;

Commissioner Trish Giordano made the motion which included the requirement that the electricity produced will remain in the local service area. The substation would be a backup power supply for Grandview Plaza and the rural area served by the company.

K-State will use the grant to continue Upward Bound services to students at Clay Center Community High School,&nbsp;Clay Center; Ell-Saline Middle-High School,&nbsp;Brookville; Lincoln Junior and Senior High School,&nbsp;Lincoln; and Newton High School,&nbsp;Newton. The services include academic enrichment courses, personal mentoring and coaching, and assistance with college, financial aid and scholarship applications. Upward Bound, one of the federal TRIO programs, is an intensive intervention program that prepares students for higher education.&nbsp;At least two-thirds of the students in each local Upward Bound program are from low-income economic backgrounds and families in which neither parent has a bachelor's degree. K-State has been offering the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/upwardbound/" target="_blank">Upward Bound</a>&nbsp;program for 19 years, with the current program based at&nbsp;<a href="https://salina.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;in Salina. of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young
children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles
under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. 

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when
possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent
rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone
overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat wave expected to run through the week

Manhattan —Primate keepers at the Sunset Zoo are mourning the loss of Dempsey, the male, white-handed gibbon. He would have been 22 years old in November. He was a great father, a protective mate, and beloved by the keeper staff that cared for him, according to a media release from the zoo. Dempsey was diagnosed with kidney disease in January of 2020. He was on daily medication and dietary changes to slow the disease progression. However, in January of 2022, it was determined during an annual physical that he had lost some weight and his kidney disease had progressed. In May, after keepers alerted the vet staff to more noticeable weight loss, blood was drawn, and it was determined that he was in renal failure. Since then, the animal care staff has been closely managing his condition by providing a specialized diet, administering medications via bananas or grapes, and noting his quality of life through daily physical and mental stability.&nbsp; Several days ago, keepers noticed that Dempsey was showing increased lethargy, decreased appetite, and a change in behavior towards his family, which was out of the ordinary. On June 10, veterinary staff anesthetized him and transported Dempsey to K-State Veterinary Health Center for further testing. Unfortunately, it was confirmed that Dempsey's kidneys had become nonfunctional. At that time, the difficult decision was made to humanly euthanize Dempsey due to the inevitable rapid decline leaving him with a poor quality of life. Dempsey was born at Columbus Zoo on November 15, 2000. He came to the Sunset Zoo in April 2012 with his mate Leslie, our female white-handed gibbon. Together they produced two offspring, Tucker, in May 2017, and Neta, in April 2020. Traditionally, gibbons are grouped as a family and have one mate for life. Considering this important family structure and primates' ability to mourn, the family was given time to sit with Dempsey after his passing. Animal care staff will continue closely monitoring our gibbon family for any behavioral changes. "When I first started working with the gibbons, Tucker had just been born, and Dempsey was a very protective father and mate. But as time went on, he and I developed a trust that ultimately led to a bond I never thought possible. As a dad, I loved watching Dempsey play and care for his kids. He truly was a great father. This loss is a devastating one for me for sure," said Robert Chase, primate Keeper at Sunset Zoo. Many zoo animals participate in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan. The SSP is dedicated to aiding the survival and growth of the world's most endangered species. The Gibbon SSP determines which animals to breed by considering their genetic makeup, health, and personality, among other factors. Gibbons are best known for their vocalizations—loud, complex duets used to defend territories, announce location and maintain pair bonds. These songs are unique to each family. These small apes are highly adapted to living in the dense forest canopy and are considered the fastest of the apes brachiating at over 30 MPH through the trees. Native to China, Vietnam, and the Lao People's Democratic Republic, white-handed gibbons are considered critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Populations have declined by more than 80% over the past 45 years due to habitat loss and fragmentation. However, in January of 2022, it was determined during an annual physical that he had lost some weight and his kidney disease had progressed. In May, after keepers alerted the vet staff to more noticeable weight loss, blood was drawn, and it was determined that he was in renal failure. Since then, the animal care staff has been closely managing his condition by providing a specialized diet, administering medications via bananas or grapes, and noting his quality of life through daily physical and mental stability.&nbsp; Several days ago, keepers noticed that Dempsey was showing increased lethargy, decreased appetite, and a change in behavior towards his family, which was out of the ordinary. On June 10, veterinary staff anesthetized him and transported Dempsey to K-State Veterinary Health Center for further testing. Unfortunately, it was confirmed that Dempsey's kidneys had become nonfunctional. At that time, the difficult decision was made to humanly euthanize Dempsey due to the inevitable rapid decline leaving him with a poor quality of life. Dempsey was born at Columbus Zoo on November 15, 2000. He came to the Sunset Zoo in April 2012 with his mate Leslie, our female white-handed gibbon. Together they produced two offspring, Tucker, in May 2017, and Neta, in April 2020. Traditionally, gibbons are grouped as a family and have one mate for life. Considering this important family structure and primates' ability to mourn, the family was given time to sit with Dempsey after his passing. Animal care staff will continue closely monitoring our gibbon family for any behavioral changes. "When I first started working with the gibbons, Tucker had just been born, and Dempsey was a very protective father and mate. But as time went on, he and I developed a trust that ultimately led to a bond I never thought possible. As a dad, I loved watching Dempsey play and care for his kids. He truly was a great father. This loss is a devastating one for me for sure," said Robert Chase, primate Keeper at Sunset Zoo. Many zoo animals participate in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan. The SSP is dedicated to aiding the survival and growth of the world's most endangered species. The Gibbon SSP determines which animals to breed by considering their genetic makeup, health, and personality, among other factors. Gibbons are best known for their vocalizations—loud, complex duets used to defend territories, announce location and maintain pair bonds. These songs are unique to each family. These small apes are highly adapted to living in the dense forest canopy and are considered the fastest of the apes brachiating at over 30 MPH through the trees. Native to China, Vietnam, and the Lao People's Democratic Republic, white-handed gibbons are considered critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Populations have declined by more than 80% over the past 45 years due to habitat loss and fragmentation. "Many pets experience anxiety when traveling in vehicles or suffer from motion sickness, so it may not be a good idea to take them with you. If you have no option but to take them, you can talk to your veterinarian about medications to help ease their anxiety or nausea." Nelson recommends having all pets restrained in some way when traveling with them in a vehicle. Cats and small dogs tend to travel best in secured crates, while specialized harnesses for larger dogs help keep them fastened in the vehicle. Allowing pets to remain loose in vehicles can be extremely dangerous because the animal can get between the driver's feet and the pedals. If a window is open, they may jump out and become injured or killed. "Having your dog ride unrestrained in the back of a pickup is also dangerous due to the risk of jumping or falling out, and it is illegal in some states," said Nelson. Additionally, since heat stress and heat exhaustion are a common concern during the summer, Nelson said it's crucial to not leave pets unattended in the car, even with the windows cracked open, as temperatures can soar to dangerous levels in a matter of minutes. For road trips Nelson suggests stopping every two to three hours to allow your dog time for exercise and to relieve itself. Unless leash trained, leave cats in their crates. "You can bring along a litter box and let the cat use it inside the car during extended trips," said Nelson. "Line the crate with plenty of absorbent material, such as newspaper, in case of accidents — and pack some cleaning supplies just in case." It's also a good idea to bring along a supply of tap water, food and treats that your pet is used to eating and drinking. This can minimize gastrointestinal distress that can be caused by consuming water or food the pets are not used to drinking or eating. Freezing water in a bowl and then letting it slowly thaw during the trip is a good way to prevent it from splashing out. If your travel plans involve crossing state lines with your pet, health certificates are required by most states, as well as other possible health requirements. These certificates can only be issued by a U.S. Department of Agriculture-accredited veterinarian. You can check your state of destination's requirements online at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel" target="_blank">USDA-APHIS Traveling With Your Pet</a>&nbsp;website. If traveling by car, the certificates are valid for 30 days. If traveling by plane, most airlines require health certificates within 10 days of traveling. In addition to health certificates, some airlines require acclimation statements from the animal's veterinarian that state the animal is accustomed to the temperature. It is important to note that pets are not allowed to fly when temperatures exceed 85 degrees. "If it is hotter than 85 degrees, no pets are allowed to fly, so you should schedule your flights for early in the morning or during evening hours because of the heat restrictions," Nelson said. Nelson advises against sedation for a pet that will be traveling by plane. Sedatives can affect a pet's balance and ability to regulate its body temperature, which can be crucial if the pet will be in the plane's cargo hold. If excessive noise or motion sickness are an issue, Nelson advises consulting with your veterinarian about options to make the flight more comfortable for the pet. "My best advice is to get on the airline's website before booking travel and find out everything they require as far as crate specifics and other flight regulations," Nelson said. "Be aware that many airlines prohibit certain breeds from traveling on their planes, regardless of the time of year." Regardless of how you are traveling this summer, Nelson encourages pet owners to have some form of identification for their pets. Ideally, a pet will have tags and a microchip, and crates or carriers labeled with pet and owner identification. Consider carrying a picture of your pet in case it should get lost and you need proof of ownership. Also make sure you have enough of your pet's medications, if needed, to last the entire duration of your trip. When boarding a pet, Nelson suggests checking with the facility on health requirements. The most common requirement is for the animal's vaccinations to be up to date before it is admitted to the facility.&nbsp;

"Core vaccines — the distemper combinations for cats and dogs and rabies — are almost exclusively required," Nelson said. "Most also require kennel cough vaccines for dogs, and some require the canine influenza vaccine. Some facilities may have additional requirements for cats. Be proactive and call ahead to ensure your veterinarian has time to get your pet vaccinated so they will be adequately protected before they arrive at the kennel." Nelson said many facilities also offer additional amenities, such as individual or group playtime and grooming services. She also recommends confirming drop-off and pickup times for the facility. Having a neighbor, relative or family friend provide care for your pet is also an option. Certified, professional pet sitters are available in some areas as well. Vacation ready: K-State veterinarian shares summer travel tips for pet owners

RILEY COUNTY— After performing an in-person assessment and further analyzing radar data, the National Weather Service of Topeka has determined the storm damage in Riley County on June 11 was caused by straight line winds and not a tornado. Some areas of Manhattan experienced straight line wind speeds of 100 mph, which is the equivalent of wind speeds in an EF1 tornado without the rotation. “Most of the storm damage we get in Kansas is actually caused by straight line winds, so they should always be taken very seriously,” said Riley County Emergency Management Director Russel Stukey. “Radar indicated a tornado debris signature and tight rotation in Olsburg in a storm which traveled south. We are very fortunate the rotation signature stopped before it reached Manhattan. The damage was significant, but could have been worse with a direct tornado hit.” Any home or business owners who had significant structural damage resulting from the June 11 storm that has not already been reported can still do so. Examples of significant structural damage include a hole in a roof or broken windows allowing water into the structure. Sirens serve as outdoor warning systems and often the sound does not penetrate buildings.&nbsp; “It’s each individual’s responsibility to be weather aware and to choose the warning method that best suits their needs, whether it’s a NOAA weather radio, tv or radio broadcast, weather app on their phone, or the Northeast Kansas Emergency Notification System,” said Stukey. &nbsp;“Everyone should have at least three ways to be notified of severe weather.”

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by 68-year-old Philip Washington of Junction City had crashed near mile marker 180 on Fort Riley Blvd. 

EMS transported Washington to Via Christi for treatment of a broken left wrist, dislocated right arm, and head injury.&nbsp; The RCPD did not report details on whether Washington was wearing a helmet.

 The accident remains under investigation, according to the RCPD.

K-State food safety expert gives tips and tricks for new and experienced home-canners&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – It’s that time of the year again when fresh produce is ready to be harvested, and many intend to set some aside to preserve for the fall and winter. Kansas State food scientist Karen Blakeslee said safety precautions are important when canning foods at home.&nbsp;

“If you are new to canning, learn how to use your canner before you preserve any food,” Blakeslee said. “Read the instructions for your canner. There are steps to follow in the process and none of these steps should be skipped.” &nbsp;

Blakeslee recommended online how-to guides on&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3242.pdf" target="_blank">pressure canning</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3241.pdf" target="_blank">steam or water bath canning</a>.&nbsp;

Other safety considerations include:&nbsp;

Ensuring the dial gauge works on the canner is critical for food safety. Blakeslee said dial gauges need to be tested yearly, and many&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/statewide-locations.html" target="_blank">local extension offices</a>&nbsp;in Kansas&nbsp;offer gauge testing.&nbsp;

“We can only test four brands, including National, Presto, Maid of Honor and Magic Seal,” Blakeslee said. “All American pressure canners have a dial gauge, but that is only used to indicate that pressure is inside the canner. Follow the weighted gauge action to achieve proper pressure.”&nbsp;

Fruit purees are a common and delicious way to preserve fresh fruits, but some fruits should not be canned at home. &nbsp;

“There are no home canning recommendations to can pureed bananas, dates, elderberries, figs, Asian pears, tomatoes, melons, papaya, persimmons, mango, coconut, white peaches or white nectarines,” Blakeslee said. &nbsp;

Blakeslee said pureed food should be pulsed – rather than blended -- to keep excess air to a minimum when using a food processor or blender. Excess air may not escape during the canning process, which could lead to a food safety hazard. &nbsp;

For more information on canning fruit purees, Blakeslee recommends an&nbsp;<a href="https://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can_02/fruit_puree.html" target="_blank">online publication from the National Center for Home Food Preservation</a>. &nbsp;

Blakeslee said a critical step in pressure canning is allowing the canner to vent steam. Be sure the vent pipe is clean and free of food debris.&nbsp;

“After placing jars inside the warm canner and attaching the canner lid, set the stove burner on high,” she said. “Watch for steam to escape from the vent pipe. It should be a strong blast of steam that is visible in a funnel-shape. Let it continuously steam in this manner for 10 minutes.”&nbsp;

Allowing steam to vent ensures the pressure is properly maintained, and the temperature remains high to eliminate the chance of under-processed, unsafe food. &nbsp;

“There are many types of glass, and not all glass jars are tempered to withstand the home canning process,” Blakeslee said. “Additionally, commercial jars are not designed to be reused in home canning. The lids on commercial jars should also not be reused.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee recommends simply recycling commercial jars or reusing them to store non-food items. &nbsp;

“Preserving food at home can be done safely when done properly,” she said. “A national survey of consumers who preserve food showed that user errors cause 99% of canning failures.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee said dial gauges need to be tested yearly, and many&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/statewide-locations.html" target="_blank">local extension offices</a>&nbsp;in Kansas&nbsp;offer gauge testing.&nbsp;“We can only test four brands, including National, Presto, Maid of Honor and Magic Seal,” Blakeslee said. “All American pressure canners have a dial gauge, but that is only used to indicate that pressure is inside the canner. Follow the weighted gauge action to achieve proper pressure.”&nbsp;Preserving fruit purees&nbsp;Fruit purees are a common and delicious way to preserve fresh fruits, but some fruits should not be canned at home. &nbsp;“There are no home canning recommendations to can pureed bananas, dates, elderberries, figs, Asian pears, tomatoes, melons, papaya, persimmons, mango, coconut, white peaches or white nectarines,” Blakeslee said. &nbsp;Blakeslee said pureed food should be pulsed – rather than blended -- to keep excess air to a minimum when using a food processor or blender. Excess air may not escape during the canning process, which could lead to a food safety hazard. &nbsp;For more information on canning fruit purees, Blakeslee recommends an&nbsp;<a href="https://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can_02/fruit_puree.html" target="_blank">online publication from the National Center for Home Food Preservation</a>. &nbsp;Don’t forget to vent&nbsp;Blakeslee said a critical step in pressure canning is allowing the canner to vent steam. Be sure the vent pipe is clean and free of food debris.&nbsp;“After placing jars inside the warm canner and attaching the canner lid, set the stove burner on high,” she said. “Watch for steam to escape from the vent pipe. It should be a strong blast of steam that is visible in a funnel-shape. Let it continuously steam in this manner for 10 minutes.”&nbsp;Allowing steam to vent ensures the pressure is properly maintained, and the temperature remains high to eliminate the chance of under-processed, unsafe food. &nbsp;Canning in commercial jars&nbsp;“There are many types of glass, and not all glass jars are tempered to withstand the home canning process,” Blakeslee said. “Additionally, commercial jars are not designed to be reused in home canning. It’s time for summer canning again 

Much of the damage in Geary County from the Saturday night storm was centered near the I-70 303 exit ( Ogden exit ), according to Geary County Emergency Management Director Garry Berges. He noted that along with National Weather Service officials he looked at damage in that area Sunday afternoon. "Started in the area of Racetrack Road northwest of the intersection at I-70 and 303, continued in a southeast direction." There was tree damage and several power poles were broken off.&nbsp; No injuries were reported.

Berges said they are estimating the winds going through that area in the 90 to 100 mile per hour range. That's where most of our damage was, right around that area. " He added that no other reports of damage in Geary County had been received by early Sunday evening.

Authorities do not yet know whether it was a tornado, a funnel cloud that was overhead or straight line winds that caused the damage. Mapping data and a check of radar screens from Saturday night will be evaluated along with information gathered from area residents to determine if there was a tornado.

There were power outages, but Berges said as of 10 a.m. Sunday all main power had been restored in Geary County. No flooding has occurred in Geary County.

Officials assess storm damage in Geary County

RILEY COUNTY —The preliminary storm damage assessment for Riley County is estimated at $9.74 million, according to a media release from the county.

A team from the Riley County Appraiser’s Office and Manhattan Fire Department’s Risk Reduction Division performed assessments of 41 residential and business properties which sustained storm damage. A total of 20 properties received major damage and 3 homes were declared completely destroyed. The total value of properties surveyed is estimated at $26.8 million.

Riley County issued a disaster declaration effective June 11, 2022 for this severe weather event.

“We’ve seen a lot of wind damage from this storm and a large amount of debris,” said Russel Stukey, Riley County Emergency Management Director. “As you’re cleaning up your property, be aware that nails and other sharp objects are likely present with roof debris and dangling overhead branches could pose a serious danger. Wear protective gear such as gloves, hard-soled shoes, hardhat or helmet, and eye protection. If you don’t feel comfortable performing the work yourself, hire a professional.”

Public Works crews will continue to remove storm debris from public roadways. In some areas, heavy equipment was used to push storm debris to the sides of the roads to allow through traffic. County and City crews will work this week to remove any remaining debris on public roads and public property.

The Riley County Transfer station will accept tree limbs and other plant-based debris from residents at no charge. Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 7AM to 5PM. They will not accept structural debris such as roofing material, building siding, or bricks. Please contact your trash hauler for more information about how to safely dispose of structural debris.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Strong winds and storms forced crowds who gathered in a rural Kansas field for a symphony performance to evacuate and damaged a sorority house at Kansas State University.

About half a dozen tornado warnings were issued Saturday evening in eastern Kansas, The Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/article262436202.html" target="_blank">reports</a>.

Daniel Reese, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Topeka, said crews were on the ground Sunday morning, working to survey the damage, including downed power lines and trees, likely caused by a combination of tornadoes and straight line winds,

About 7,000 had gathered in a Chase County pasture for the Symphony in the Flint Hills, a popular annual event whose theme for 2022 was “Weather in the Flint Hills,” when the storms approached.

Manhattan turned out to be among the hardest hit areas, according to the weather service. Police there took reports of downed power lines and some damage to buildings, including the Chi Omega house.

At one point, more than 25,000 power outages were reported across Manhattan and nearby Marysville, Evergy reported.

Manhattan's Risk Reduction Division declared five structures condemned and unsafe to occupy. The structures were located in the McCain neighborhood area east of the Kansas State University campus. The two unoccupied Greek houses, Chi Omega at 1516 McCain and Kappa Alpha Theta at 1517 McCain Lane, and three single family homes in the area were severely damaged. Residents in the single-family homes were displaced but did not require assistance.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Riley County Transfer Station at 1881 Henton Road was opened today at 10:00 a.m. to allow people to dispose of tree limbs and other plant debris. There will be no charge for disposal. The station will remain open until at least 5:00 p.m. No roofing materials, siding, or other structural debris will be accepted. Public Works Crews from Riley County, local townships, and the City of Manhattan will be working to remove storm debris from public roadways. For assistance disposing of tree limbs on private property, contact local tree service and landscape companies.

When cleaning storm debris remember to wear gloves, hard-soled shoes, and follow standard safety precautions when operating chainsaws and other power tools.&nbsp;

In Marysville, police chief Matt Simpson, said that while there was damage in the city’s downtown area, no injuries were reported.

TOPEKA — Last week, 140 flags 
were on display at the National World War I Museum and Memorial, 
representing the number of veterans who take their lives each week.

Addressing and ensuring access to care for the more than 175,000 
Kansas veterans benefits the community at large, not just those 
struggling with trauma from war, said Matt Naylor, president of the 
museum and memorial. Health care providers and veteran services 
advocates such as Naylor say public awareness of the mental and physical
 effects that linger after the battles are fought is becoming more 
common. That means a growing focus on this area.

“We know around about 20 veterans or active-duty personnel take their
 lives each day, and that was true during World War I as well, when we 
didn’t really understand how to treat shellshock,” Naylor said, adding 
that now providers understand shellshock to be post-traumatic stress 
disorder. “The impact though, on families, on communities, on economies,
 is enormous.”

Naylor was joined Monday by representatives of a veteran’s healing 
group and the University of Kansas Health System to discuss how the 
state responds to the needs of its warfighters. One major issue 
discussed is finding access to providers who understand the issues that 
veterans face in their day-to-day lives.

Only about 50% of the roughly 18 million veterans nationwide receive 
care through a veterans’ hospital. The rest depend on the same health 
systems and networks as anyone else, said Nicole Yedlinsky, a family 
physician for KU Health System and a veteran.

Yedlinsky, who was on active duty for seven years, followed by eight 
years working in the military medical system, said progress is being 
made in filling gaps that veterans’ hospitals cannot fill.

“There’s a much bigger awareness of those mental health issues that 
veterans face, especially as they transition out of the service, and 
also that connectedness and the importance of community involvement,” 
Yedlinsky said.

One aid available to all veterans working in the health system is the
 Veteran’s Resource Group. It has worked to repair homes for veterans 
and provide needed medical equipment to veteran’s organizations that 
need it.

The Battle Within, an Olathe-based organization created by more than 
100 veterans, first responders and other community members, is also 
working to break down barriers to care and ensure veterans have a chance
 to heal. A primary focus is reducing the stigma of mental health, said 
Adam Magers, the clinical director for The Battle Within. This includes 
connecting veterans with therapists and other mental health care 
providers.

Magers said psychotherapy is effective for the treatment of PTSD and 
encouraged veterans to seek the help they need. He also told anyone 
hoping to help a veteran should approach them with openness and 
authenticity.

“Having a traumatic reaction to something like war is normal,” Magers
 said. He added that “the best thing that we can do when we’re speaking 
with somebody who’s experienced something traumatic is just make it safe
 for them to share their experience, and to be honest about how they’re 
feeling, without having anybody shame them.”

Kan. groups tackling stigma of veterans' mental health issues

MARSHALL COUNTY —A tornado rolled through the northeast Kansas community of Marysville Saturday evening, according to the Marshall County Sheriff's department.

The storm caused considerable damage to homes and downed power lines across the region.

The high wind from the storm also caused damage in other northeast Kansas communities including Manhattan. The River Pond Campground area at Tuttle Creek State Park will be closed until at least Monday due to extensive damage, according to the Riley County Police Department. There are no reports of injuries.

There were no early report of injuries in Marysville, according to  Marysville Police Chief Matt Simpson

Brewel Currie, one of the coordinators for the event, estimated the attendance on a steamy, hot day at approximately 400 people. "The message we're sending is unity with our community. It's not about black, white or whatever. It's about us coming together."

Music, inspirational speeches, food and crafts were among the many highlights of the event in Heritage Park. Multiple churches were represented during the annual celebration.&nbsp;

Heavy rain along with 60-70 mile per hour wind gusts occurred. In the Ascher - Clarks Creek - Humboldt Creek Road area winds were estimated near 80 mile per hour, there was tree damage on Ascher Road, and up to 2.5 inches of rain in the Clarks Creek area.

Berges noted that there was quarter-size hail in the Acorns Resort - Farnum Creek area, smaller hail in Junction City and several tree limbs were down from Grandview Plaza going east.

In Riley County police confirmed that were many power outages, and a lot of downed power lines and tree damage.&nbsp; They also reported damage to the county shops on the north side of Manhattan. as of 10 p.m. Saturday there were 145 power outages were reported in the Manhattan area.

At 9:25 p.m. the RCPD confirmed that Anderson Ave. between 52nd Street and Kitten Creek Rd. on the west side of Manhattan was closed, and Tuttle Creek Boulevard north of Manhattan was closed around the North 48th intersection. Motorists were asked to avoid those areas.

Geary County Fish &amp; Game Association and Fort Riley Outdoors Group will offer a 3D Archery Fun Shoot on Sunday at Sportsman's Acres.&nbsp; This will be an informal shoot with self scoring consisting of a trail with 20 targets and two rotations for a 40 target total.

Entry categories are traditional, bowhunter and open. Entry fees are $15 for adults and $10 for youth. Registration begins at 8.m. and competition starts at 9 a.m. All scorecards must be turned in by 2 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded. There will be a hotdog, chips and drink ( water or soda ) lunch that will be provided.&nbsp;

Junction City Rotary Club President Dale Anders and Treasurer Susan Jagerson presented a check this week to Pawnee Mental Health Junction City Youth Case Managers Sylvian Arceneaux and Paola Ames.&nbsp;

The money will fund the Youth Rehabilitation Services Community Base Services "Wood Working with Katrina project."
