The President of the Landlords Association, Gary Olds, said Dinkel will present information on city government operations such as sources of revenue, expenses, personnel, condemnations and updates on city projects. Potential property taxes for 2023 will also be discussed since 2022 valuations have increased.

All landlords and property managers are invited to attend the meeting.

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating another reported gun theft in Manhattan.

Just before 7a.m. Monday, officers a filed report for burglary in the 1000 block of Thurston St. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. 

A 24-year-old man reported his truck was broken into and his black Smith &amp; Wesson AR-22 rifle and Apple iPad were stolen.

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,800.

The RCPD reported there have been around 80 car burglaries since the beginning of the year in Manhattan.

RCPD: Smith & Wesson AR-22 rifle taken in burglary

Junction City Commissioners are scheduled to receive a presentation Tuesday night from the Chair of the Geary Community Hospital Board of Trustees, Theresa Bramlage, about the pending transition of the hospital to Stormont Vail Regional Health on Jan.1.

Geary Community officials are trying to raise money for GCH until the transition is complete. The amount requested from the City could be up to $3 million with the money coming from American Recovery Program Act funding provided to the City.

City Manager Allen Dinkel informed commissioners in a memo that there is no doubt that a hospital in the community is vital to the growth and future of Junction City. The City does have the ARPA funds but has not spent any of it. Some local governmental entities such as Geary County have already spent a portion of their ARPA funds. The City has some concern about use of their ARPA funding in this manner but will continue to explore that option.

Dinkel feels more information is needed from the County since there will be a number of financial matters they must consider during the transition, and since the county will continue to own the hospital building, and be liable for certain expenses.

Dinkel added that he feels that it must be remembered that Junction City is in Geary County, and has about 67% of the population living there. Approximately 70% of the property tax dollars received by the County are paid by owners of property within the City.

According to the memo the ARPA funds are not part of&nbsp; the City's traditional budget, but how they are spent will have a major impact on the City's budget for this year and subsequent years.

The staff recommendation going to the Commission is that no financial support be committed by the City until more research is done by Geary County to identify issues and the financial impact of doing so is discovered.

Members of the Kansas National Guard engineer unit will spend two weeks for their annual training moving a section of the Riverwalk Trail located east of U.S. 77 near the Republican River back about 50 feet. The combination of water runoff and the river have caused some of&nbsp; the trail to erode to where it's not safe at the present time, said Craig Bender, Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Council Director. "If you're riding a bike down there late at night you literally could probably end up being in the river and no one could find you for awhile."

The work will include tearing down trees and moving the trail bac. Bender added that David Walker is providing rock for the project. The effort was coordinated with KDOT, Junction City Parks and Fort Riley.&nbsp;

The county GIS / Planning and Zoning office confirmed that the company would a second substation for Grandview Plaza. MANHATTAN, Kan. — The old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” coined by Benjamin Franklin in 1736 still holds true today when talking about men’s health and cancer prevention. &nbsp;

Speaking about three of the most common cancers in men — prostate, testicular and colorectal — K-State Research and Extension family and consumer sciences agent Holly Miner said the key to reducing risk is early detection though screening.&nbsp;

“Early detection increases the treatment options and may decrease the spread of cancer to other areas of the body,” Miner said. &nbsp;

Of the three common cancers in men, Miner said prostate cancer is the most common in American men, after skin cancer. &nbsp;

“If your father or brother had prostate cancer, you are more likely to develop it,” Miner said. “A diet high in fat also increases the risk.”&nbsp;

She said screening is recommended for men ages 55-69 and can be done with a blood test.&nbsp;

“Research has also shown that men over the age of 70 should consult with their healthcare professional for screening recommendations,” Miner said. &nbsp;

Testicular cancer is another uniquely male problem. Miner said this disease typically occurs in men 20-35 years old, but has a low chance of occurrence, approximately .0004%.&nbsp;

“A family history of testicular cancer, men with HIV and white men have a great risk for this cancer compared to other ethnicities,” Miner said. She added that men who did not have a testicle drop down at birth or within the first year of life, as well as men who have had cancer in one testicle, are also at a greater risk.&nbsp;

Screening for this can be done at home monthly by feeling for a lump in the testicle. Any changes in the scrotum should be reported to a medical professional, Miner said.&nbsp;

A cancer that afflicts men and women alike is colorectal cancer, which Miner said is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer in the U.S. and accounts for 9% of all cancer-related deaths.&nbsp;

“If detected early, colorectal cancer can be prevented or treated without death occurring,” Miner said. &nbsp;

Risk factors for colorectal cancer include age, personal or family history of this cancer, being obese, excessive alcohol or tobacco use or being of African American decent, according to Miner. &nbsp;

There are several screening options to include annual fecal occult blood test, coloscopy, virtual colonoscopy via X-Rays, and DNA stool test. &nbsp;

“Because there are so many different types of screenings for colon cancer, the best thing to do is consult with your health care professional to figure out which one is the best for you,” Miner said. &nbsp;

With all cancers, a healthy diet is key in risk reduction. Miner offered these tips:

“Your health is important. Taking steps to prevent, detect and care for yourself now will lead to a healthier and more fulfilling life,” Miner said. &nbsp;

Just after 10:30p.m. Saturday, officers filed a report for aggravated burglary in the 1000 block of N. Juliette Ave. in Manhattan.

A 25-year-old man and 25-year-old woman reported a 24-year-old man and an additional unknown suspect broke into the victims' apartment while the male victim was home and stole an LG tablet, a white iPhone SE, an Xbox 360 controller, a Momentum Cori HD smart camera, and $500 cash. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,100.&nbsp;

At abound the same time Saturday, officers filed a report for aggravated burglary and violation of protection order at an apartment in Manhattan.

A 20-year-old woman reported a 21-year-old male suspect entered her apartment while she was home and stole a bulldog, violating a protection order while doing so.

Just before 1a.m. Sunday, officers filed a report for aggravated burglary in the 2500 block of Farm Bureau Rd. in Manhattan. In short, farming and ranching are the essential drivers of the manufacturing- or service-based economy we all enjoy. In the United States, where about 1 in 50 people grow the crops and livestock that end up on our dinner plates, it’s easy to overlook the importance of agriculture. The Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is scheduled for June 14th at 10am (time is subject to change). It will begin at the Grant Avenue gate, crossing over Washington St, South on Jefferson to 6th (Heritage Park). 

According to&nbsp; the City's 515 report, police said last year was one of their best years of attendance, and the goal is to increase that amount this year. To increase attendance, they are planning to give members a few options to participate in the run. One is to run the full length and the other will be half. Shirts will be available to purchase for $25.00.

Runners are needed for the Torch Run

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY —Friends have established A&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/ryqhv7-tyra-memorial-fund?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&amp;utm_medium=copy_link_all&amp;utm_source=customer" target="_blank">GoFundMe</a>&nbsp;account to assist the family of a mother killed in a crash near Saint George last week. Her two sons were also in the car at the time of the crash.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Toyota Avalon driven by Tyra A. Anderson, 28, St. George, was eastbound on Military Trail Road just east of Railway Road.

The car left the roadway to the right and struck a tree.

Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Frontier Forensics. EMS transported a 1-year-old boy in the car to the hospital in Wamego for treatment of serious injuries, according to the KHP. A 3-year-old boy in the car was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Organizers of the fundraiser said they hoped the account would raise enough money to help with meals for the Andersons and take care of unexpected formula costs for the baby.

GEARY COUNTY—A Junction City woman was injured in an accident just after 9:30p.m. Sunday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Mazda Protege driven by Jose G.&nbsp;Marcano Narvaez, 25, Junction City, was northbound on U.S. 77 in the outside lane. 

The left front fender of the car struck 70-year-old Maria A.&nbsp;Aleman of Junction City, who was in the lanes of traffic, crossing the road.&nbsp;

EMS transported Aleman to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of serious injuries. Marcano Narvaez and a passenger in the Mazda were not injured and properly restrained, according to the KHP.

JC Expo 2022 will be hosted by the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce on Aug. 30 from 5-8 p.m. in Heritage Park. Vendor set up will begin at 2:30 p.m. and tear down will end by 9 p.m.

This event will be a networking opportunity for local businesses and will include vendors.

City Commissioners will be asked to approve a special event permit application for the Expo when they meet Tuesday night at 701 North Jefferson.

Soldiers of the 1st Armored ( Devil ) Brigade Combat Team will be returning to Fort Riley from a deployment partnering with NATO allies in Europe. According to spokesperson Krystal Koch, volunteers from the Fort Riley Community are working with Operation Once in a Lifetime to supply single soldier barracks rooms with pillows, blankets, sheet sets, towels, wash cloths, shower curtains, and air fresheners.&nbsp;

Operation Once in a Lifetime is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization based out of Dallas, Texas. Their mission is to make the dreams of U.S. Service Members and their families come true by providing once in a lifetime experiences for the military as well as emergency financial assistance through their multiple programs.&nbsp;

Single soldiers returning to the barracks after a deployment come back at all hours of the day and night, and often come back to empty rooms. Many soldiers’ items are locked in storage, and after a long deployment, a long flight home, finding and picking up their baggage, reintegration meetings, and finding their room assignments, they still need to go through the process of locating their belongings and unpacking. Comparatively, married soldiers are able to walk into a home that is already established and they are more likely to be greeted by family. Operation Once in a Lifetime is providing the community with the opportunity to be that family for single soldiers. Supplying them with an already set up room means these soldiers are able to return home, and relax.

1ABCT is comprised of 7 Battalions, with an additional MP company attached to the Brigade for this deployment. There are 1,500 single soldiers returning to the barracks. The vast majority of these soldiers are young and make less than $30,000 a year. The need to purchase items to furnish their living quarters adds an additional burden to already financially vulnerable soldiers. This deployment was the first for many of these young soldiers, and was extended due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

The projected cost of this project is $48,750. In order to accept a goods donation of this size, 1ABCT received JAG, Garrison, and MWR approval.

Operation Once in a Lifetime is hosting a Facebook Fundraiser for this project. All funds raised through this effort go directly towards purchasing the aforementioned supplies.&nbsp;

An Amazon Wish List has been set up for donors across the country to send supplies directly.&nbsp;

USO Kansas is helping by supplying 1,500 bags filled with hygiene supplies.

Target in Salina and Target in Manhattan donated a combined gift card total of $150. Manhattan Target Employees have committed to volunteer to help set up barracks rooms.

Members of the 1ABCT Soldier and Family Readiness Groups, 1ABCT Ready Reserve soldiers, and community members have volunteered their time to collect, inventory, and organize donations. SFRG members have also started working with Barracks managers and the 1ABCT Soldier and Family Readiness Assistant to deliver supplies as needed to the barracks.

Fort Riley Single Soldier Barracks Project supports the troops

Geary County Sheriff's Department Community Involvement Team is accepting applications for 2022 Camp SHIELD. The dates for Camp SHIELD will be August 2-6.

They are back in full force this year and camp will be overnight for the entire duration.    Some of the activities planned this year include:

Parents will have to provide transportation to the Sheriff’s office in Junction City on day one. Then they will transport children to the camp on August 2 and back to the sheriff’s office upon completion of the camp on August 6. This camp does involve several physically demanding activities all campers are asked to wear comfortable tennis shoes/closed toed shoes.    ALL activities are included and will be at no cost to the families. 

Our camper spots are very limited and they ask that campers do attend school within Geary County USD475, and fall under at least two of the following qualifications: 

--Must be going from 5th grade into 6th grade or from 6th grade into 7th grade

Camp Shield returns in 2022

There were only about 10 airplanes at Freeman Field for the 2022 Kansas Aviation Expo on a rainy Saturday morning. The weather impacted the number of planes and pilots in attendance.

Despite that activities went on at the airport, said spokesman Marvin Hornbostel. There was a good turnout for a pancake &amp; sausage breakfast, lunch was being served and there were a number of exhibits to view. Those who did attend could also visit with the pilots and view the planes that were there. Hornbostel noted that there was good community support.

The hour-long free live music program will include selections ranging from the Star Spangled Banner and Broadway One-Step to a A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

Some other songs will include the main theme from Disneys' The Incredibles, Birth of the Blues, Black Forest Overture, Call to Victory March and Armed Forces on Parade.

Howard came to the plate with the bases full and said later he was not nervous. " I just know no moment too big, too small for me. I was in the right spot at the right time and hit the ball hard." He credited the three hitters ahead of him for getting on base as well.

Junction City led 4-1 in the eighth inning before Baldwin City rallied for four runs t0 take the lead. Brady Stuewe started and game Junction City six good innings on the mound. He gave up only one run.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Harley Davidson 999 Ultra driven by Peter R. Ross, 66, Glenwood, Iowa, was&nbsp; was traveling behind a 2012 Triumph Thunderbird driven by George H. Forst, 67, LaVista, Nebraska southbound on U.S. 24 just south of Madison Road.

The Harley rear-ended the Triumph when it slowed down. Both vehicles came to rest in the southbound lane.

EMS airlifted Forst to Stormont Vail.&nbsp; Ross was transported to Via Christi in Manhattan. Both drivers were wearing helmets, according to the KHP.

Tuttle Creek Blvd. was shut down temporarily during the investigation, according to the Riley County Police Department.

REXFORD — Gov. Laura Kelly today toured&nbsp;family-owned and -operated&nbsp;McCarty&nbsp;Family&nbsp;Farms&nbsp;in northwest Kansas&nbsp;to proclaim the month of June Kansas Dairy Month. The governor was joined by the Kansas Department of Agriculture and other&nbsp;agriculture&nbsp;community members.

"Kansas has one of the&nbsp;fastest-growing&nbsp;dairy industries in the nation," Kelly said. "Our dairy&nbsp;farmers feed the world&nbsp;and&nbsp;are&nbsp;essential&nbsp;to the overall success of our state's economy.&nbsp;Dairy Month&nbsp;honors&nbsp;their&nbsp;hard work and&nbsp;contributions.”

Over the last three decades, Kansas’ dairy cow herd has doubled, and milk production has nearly quadrupled. Today, Kansas is home to nearly 170,000 milk cows and more than 210 dairy farms. Last year alone, the value of milk produced in Kansas totaled more than $696 million.

Kelly proclaims June Kansas Dairy Month at Thomas Co. farm

Junction City Commissioners will hear a presentation on the effort to develop a Black of History Trail of Geary County when they meet Tuesday night at 701 North Jefferson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jim Sands, president of the History Trail project, will make a presentation on the effort to protect and preserve the African American history of the area. He will provide a briefing on the essential elements of information about the trail to better benefit the community and neighboring communities.

Military Affairs Council Director Craig Bender said in April that there are 10 designated sites for the trail,&nbsp; ranging from the Geary County Historical Museum to Rathert Field. The Buffalo Soldier Memorial, former Buffalo Soldier housing and former USO are some other locations on the trail.
