MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a teen in connection with a incident at school in Manhattan.

Just after 12:30p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery at Manhattan High School in the 2100 block of Poyntz Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 16-year-old suspect choked a 16-year-old girl with&nbsp;a phone cord. 

Police arrested Siley Thomas, 16, of Manhattan on a requested charge of aggravated battery.&nbsp; The teen was processed through juvenile intake and released to a guardian.

Two quilts of valor were presented Tuesday to Vietnam Veteran Jackie McDonald and Iraq Veteran Anthony Gibson.&nbsp; According to Phyllis Fitzgerald the day was extra special. Soldiers from 1st of the 16th Infantry were doing a community service project and attended the event.&nbsp;

Donna Martinson and Montika Allen-Atkinson were two of the amazing quilters.

Veterans receive Quilts of Valor in Junction City

Junction City wrapped up the 2022 football campaign with the postseason awards assembly Tuesday evening at the high school. The Blue Jays finished with a 7-3 overall record and second in the Centennial League. They also advanced to the second round of the Class 6A postseason playoffs.

The junior varsity and freshman teams both finished with 5-2 records.

Coach Randall Zimmerman pointed to the improvement by the team during the season. "Seniors gave us so much good leadership. Underclassmen just kind of jumped on board and took off."

Logan Nabus was named the Offensive Player of the Year, Michael Boganowski Defensive Player of the Year and Aidan Field Special Teams Player of the Year.

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary in Manhattan.

On Monday, officers with the Riley County Police Department were called to the American Legion Pearce-Keller Post #17 on McCall Road in Manhattan on the report of a burglary, theft and criminal damage to property, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, American Legion staff reported the doors to the building had been damaged, along with an ATM and a safe within the building being damaged and cash stolen.

An estimated $4,800 in cash was stolen from the ATM and safe, and approximately $3,300 of additional loss for the damage to the doors, ATM and safe.

American Legion and Blue Sky LLC were listed as the victims in this incident.

Police: ATM damaged, cash stolen at American Legion Post

ST. MARYS — Pottawatomie
 Wabaunsee Regional Library is decorated for the holidays, with a 
snow-filled tiny Christmas village placed in the center of the book 
stacks. There’s a princess mural on one wall, complete with a unicorn, 
and a dinosaur figurine over by the children’s nook.

The city council is debating whether 
to renew the library’s lease with the city following the library’s 
refusal to accept a lease clause asking it to remove all material that 
could be viewed as socially, racially or sexually divisive, including 
all LGBTQ content.

The library has been housed in St. 
Marys since the 1980s, operating on an annual lease with the city. The 
library serves eight locations, including Alma, Alta Vista, Eskridge, 
Harveyville, Olsburg, Onaga, St. Marys and Westmoreland, with county 
residents funding the library through taxes.

The St. Marys branch acts as the 
headquarters, with a designated “mini librarian” delivering books from 
the library to all other eight locations, visiting them each week.

If the lease — which ends late December — isn’t
 renewed, the library will have to pack up hundreds of books and 
equipment and move to another town, as there’s no other space in St. 
Marys that would be able to accommodate the library’s operations.

St. Marys resident Hannah Stockman, a
 stay-at-home mom looking after 13 kids, said the move would be 
devastating for her and others like her.

“At
 this point, it’s the only space left that we have for the public,” 
Stockman said. “We don’t have any pool or any other amenities through 
the community center. So people come here for many, many different 
reasons.”

Stockman said the library is one of 
the few places where her whole family can go together. Her children have
 become excited about reading and have been entertained by several of 
the library’s programs, as they were given coloring pages and other 
things. Stockman loves learning and put together an education program 
for herself using the library’s materials.

“Some of them are learning how to 
read and some of them don’t really want to read, but they come here and 
they get excited. I can’t provide that for them any other way,” Stockman
 said. “It just feels good to be here.”

Discussion of the library removal 
started this summer after a local parent was upset by the contents of 
“Melissa,” a book about a transgender child written by Alex Gino, and 
wanted it removed from the library. The book was formerly published by 
the title “George.”

Judith Cremer, the library director, 
said the book was added to the library after it made the William Allen 
White Award 2017-2018 Master List for grades 3-5, and has only been 
checked out four times.

Cremer said parents have the option 
of filtering which books their children check out, and can speak to 
staff about limiting their children’s access to certain books. She 
stressed that she and her staff aren’t trying to fight the council and 
aren’t interested in divisive matters. She’s been at the library for 
almost 20 years, and just wants to serve the community.

“We just are doing what public 
libraries do,” Cremer said. “We don’t really judge information, we are a
 reflection of the world and things that are in the world. We have 
information that has been published and mediated and checked for facts. 
So it’s a safe place that people can go to get access to that 
information. It’s not like we are handing out or advocating it in any 
way. It’s just there.”

Cremer asked the parent to fill out 
the standard form for challenging material, but the form wasn’t returned
 until the end of August, after a city council meeting in which council 
members asked that LGBTQ books be removed from the library, along with 
any books that dealt with racial issues or sexual issues.

During the August meeting, St. Marys 
City Commissioner Matthew Childs asked that a “morals clause” be added 
to the library’s lease during an August city commission.

The clause would’ve stipulated that 
the library not “supply, distribute, loan, encourage, or coerce 
acceptance of or approval of explicit sexual or racially or socially 
divisive material, or events (such as ‘drag queen story hours’) that 
support the LGBTQ+ or critical theory ideology or practice.”

“The discussion on the language that 
was used in that lease, it was very broad. It didn’t really meet the 
rule of law and it was problematic in a lot of ways,” Cremer said.

Cremer said she discussed the clause 
stipulation with regional library consultants and spoke with lawyers. 
She thought the issue had been dropped after they talked things over 
with council members.

Instead, commissioners began 
discussing creating their own city library, one without “divisive 
material,” in a council meeting earlier this month.

The lease renewal will be discussed at Tuesday’s commission meeting, with a decision expected then.

Stockman has been reaching out to 
every group she can think of to rally people in support of the library, 
talking to other libraries around the state, as well as PFLAG and Loud 
Light — nonprofits that advocate for the LGBTQ community. She said many 
people in the community were scared to speak out in support of the 
library because of a large religious presence in St. Marys, so she was 
looking to external sources of support.

One petition, started by Gerry 
Marstall, has more than 1,000 signatures in support of the library. 
Marstall listed all the services the library provides, including free 
reading programs, free summer lunches, and free Wi-Fi.

“If the library were forced to close 
or relocate to another town it would be catastrophic to all citizens in 
the St. Marys area,” Marstall said in the petition description.

Refusal to remove ‘divisive’ books could be demise of area library

A wreath-laying ceremony for former German and Italian prisoners of war takes place at the Fort Riley post cemetery, 193 Huebner Road, Nov. 17 at 10 a.m.

The annual ceremony is held in remembrance of the POWs who lived and worked at Fort Riley between 1943 and 1946, specifically the 62 Germans and 11 Italians now buried here.

In 1943, War Department officials established Fort Riley as one of 600 locations across the United States selected to house German, Italian and Japanese POWs. The camps became home for 350,000 prisoners—enough to man 35 German army divisions; approximately 4,500 were held at Fort Riley.

The POWs filled a labor void on area farms, working on roads, laundry and building maintenance projects. Prisoners earned about 80 cents a day. After the war, some of the POWs chose to stay in the local area to live and work.

The German and Italian Memorial Ceremony is open to the public. Those attending who don’t have a Department of Defense ID card must stop by the Henry Gate visitor’s center (I-70, exit 301) to get a one-day pass or apply for a pass online at&nbsp;<a href="https://home.army.mil/riley/" target="_blank">https://home.army.mil/riley/</a>.&nbsp;For more information on Fort Riley access, call 785-239-2982.

Geary County Historical Society members have elected five nominees to the Board of Directors for 2023. They include Florence Whitebread, Michelle Gunderson, Margaret Kilpatrick, Mary Reed and Bill Powers.

On Nov. 10 a total of 11 Lincoln School STUCO Students served lunch to the NARF Group at the 4H Senior Center. Students also served and eat lunch together with other senior patrons who attended the Senior Center. 

The students and seniors were happy to be able to interact again in- person. Thanks goes to Lincoln School Staff Resia Muto and Freedom Brass, along with Debbie LaCroix, Director of Senior Center, for coordinating this intergenerational event with I.C.A.R.E.

There will be school site visits to Ware, Elementary, Fort Riley Middle School and Morris Hill Elementary where they will sign a red iron construction beam. Board members will receive a project update and walking tour of the new elementary school construction site.

Clues ranging from dreaming big and risk taking to perseverance and cooperation were all part of the Mystery at the Museum as outlined by Dr. Cleion Morton to members of the Geary County Historical Society Monday evening. The occasion was the 50th anniversary celebration of the Historical Society.

Referring to Geary County history, Morton explained it's the people that make the difference. "Our future is impacted positively because of people who went before us, reflected these clues and created what we now call history."

That history has ranged from the purchase of the current museum building by Fred Bramlage and it's donation to parades, Chautauqua, the sesquicentennial celebration and creation of a Black History Trail of Geary County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Morton noted that the Geary County Historical Museum is a stage of sorts, "for those stories to continue to inspire and challenge the next generation. Clues, they're important. "

Morton added that Mahatma Gandhi put it best. "If we are to make progress we must not repeat history but make new history. We must add to the inheritance left by our ancestors. That is the Mystery at the Museum."

Justin Aaron of Junction City has advanced into the live round of "The Voice" on NBC. Aaron said there are four contestants on each team for a total of 16 contestants. 

"In the live playoffs, which happen Monday, every act gets to sing a song and after they sing the voting lines are open," he told JC Post. "Everyone go out and download 'The Voice' official app." 

You can vote 10 times for your favorite artist.

"In the top 16 round, you are actually able to vote for two artists on each team. With that being said, the two artists with the highest number of votes on the Tuesday elimination show automatically move through," Aaron said. "The bottom two stand before the coaches and each coach is able to pick one contestant. That will be the top three on each team."

Live rounds go from the top 16 down to the end of the season in mid-December when the next winner of "The Voice" is crowned.

Jackie Mundt, Pratt County farmer and rancher There are two kinds of people in the world: people who hate snow and those of us who love it. If you think I am crazy, consider I grew up in Wisconsin. In my world, snow means picturesque landscapes coated in white, the fun of sledding, tubing, downhill skiing and snowmobile rides, and if you are lucky — a snow day. My farm friends might roll their eyes and say, what about chores. On my family’s dairy farm our cows were safe and warm in the barn, and we didn’t have to break ice or dig them out of the snow. We only had issues if temperatures were extremely low for a long enough time that the barn cleaner froze up. Those were not fun days. Since snow is a much rarer treat in Kansas, helping with livestock and navigating drifts on snowy days doesn’t really bother me. Plus, the snow never seems to last longer than a day or two so it melts before my excitement wears off. You might think it is too early to be wishing for snow but there are chances in the forecast, and I am filled with anticipation. I dream of fluffy floating flakes that fall peacefully as the sound is absorbed and the countryside is blanketed in white. That may be a bit of wishful thinking since Kansas snow often seems like it is right out of the blizzard from the Claymation classic “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” The drier, drifting snow that whips across the Kansas plains is exactly where I imagine the Abominable Snowman. Even if it isn’t the picture perfectness of my dreams, snow is needed. This year’s drought conditions have ensured that pretty much all farmers are excited about any precipitation regardless of form. The unexpected break from our busy lives can be a blessing too as we pause our daily routines and postpone plans. Snow days are a special kind of boost to moral because they often include spending time with our loved ones and doing all the little things that we never have time for otherwise. On days when the world shut down, my family often had a blast and made lasting memories. In my younger years, snow days were spent making forts with my brothers. As I grew older, my dad would take us out for a snowmobile ride. Mom was ready with snacks to warm us up while watching movies as a family. Snow days have brought me so much joy because they are almost always spent with family. In the aftermath of the pandemic there has been debate about whether or not remote work and school means the end of snow days. I have been heartened to see that many educators fighting to keep snow days. There is great value in disrupted schedules making time for joy and togetherness. Today when I end up canceling plans because of snow, it usually allows me to spend more time helping on the farm. If we are lucky enough and get great snowfalls this winter, remember not to spend too much time worrying about canceled plans or the work that is looming. Just after 8p.m. Saturday, officers filed a report for arson in the 400 block of Poyntz Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

It was reported an unknown male suspect poured gasoline on a car and lit it on fire.&nbsp; Manhattan Fire Department responded to the scene and the fire was quickly extinguished. 

The incident remains under investigation.&nbsp;Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=353#">Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers</a>. RCPD: Suspect poured gas on car, lit it on fire

This Sunday, Nov. 20, the former Walla Walla Elementary School in Geary County will be remembered during a reunion. The school, founded in the 1870s served students until it closed in 1962. The reunion will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Grandview Plaza City Building.

Karen Erichsen said the school was located northwest of Junction City. According to Ella Moloney it was a one-room school house with one teacher for eight grades.&nbsp;June 17, 1872 students first met in a home and decided to organize the school. The building was first built in 1874.

Erichsen said she believes that there are a lot of former Walla Walla school students in the community. Moloney is hoping the publicity about the reunion will help attract those people to attend.&nbsp;

Around 6:15 pm Saturday evening, Riley County Police officers responded to the report of a crash near the intersection of North Seth Child Road and Top of the World.

When they arrived on the scene, officers found a 2006 GMC Canyon, driven by 64-year-old Robert Jandera, of Houston, TX, had crossed over the center line while traveling north on Seth Child Road.

Twenty-year-old Brenda Flores, of Junction City, who was traveling southbound on Seth Child Road in a 2009 Toyota Camry, had to swerve into the northbound lane to attempt to avoid the GMC Canyon.

The GMC Canyon the reentered the northbound lane, colliding with the Camry, before coming to a stop.

Riley County EMS treated Flores for minor injuries at the scene and was released.

Jandera was transported by Riley County EMS to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan for treatment of injuries before being <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/e8f08fc5-dd5b-4f08-86b2-5da17b1a3889">arrested by the Riley County Police Department for DUI and aggravated battery</a>.

Jandera was issued a total bond of $6,000 and has bonded out from the Riley County Jail.

Nate Butler, Junction City, is preparing to represent the 68th District in the Kansas House of Representatives. Based on the results of last Tuesday's election he was the clear front runner.&nbsp;

Butler wants to work reduce inflation. "We've got to do something to help offset some of the costs. I'm going to a meeting next week with the agricultural side of the House to learn about that. "Butler noted that farmers are struggling with the cost of fuel and fertilizer. "I'm anxious to learn about that and see if I can bring that up to the House a little bit more, be a little bit more educated on it."

Butler has a background with the military. "One of the committees I've asked to be on is Veterans Affairs. " He is hoping to set up some tours of Fort Riley. Many of the legislators haven't been there for a long time.

The 68th District includes portions of Geary, Morris and Riley counties.

Kansas Highway Patrol has confirmed that a two vehicle crash at 3 a.m. Saturday resulted in the death of two people, John Wagnaar III, 34, Manhattan and Morgan L. Taylor, 31, Colorado Springs, CO. The accident occurred on I-70 eastbound, nine miles southeast of Manhattan.

According to the Highway Patrol a vehicle driven by Wagnaar was traveling West in the Eastbound passing lane of I-70. The vehicle driven by Taylor was traveling east in the eastbound passing lane of I-70. Both vehicles collided head on. Wagnaar's Ford F-150 rolled into the median and caught fire. Taylor's Honda Civic came to rest partially on the North shoulder of the Eastbound lanes.

Wagnaar and Taylor were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to&nbsp;Johnson Cremations, Funerals and Receptions. The KHP had incomplete seat belt usage information.

College of Education produces video series about professionals transitioning to teaching

CHICAGO, IL – U.S. Soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division (1ID) were distinguished guests in a historic Veterans Day Commemoration Ceremony at Soldier Field on Friday.

To honor this day, Soldiers currently serving in America's oldest active duty Division attended the event to commemorate the long history between the unit and the city of Chicago.

"Veterans Day is a day when we recognize those who have served honorably in uniform and pay tribute to the sacrifices they have made for this country," said acting 1st Infantry Division Command Sgt. Maj. Albert Serrano. "Ceremonies like this not only bond 1ID Soldiers past and present but celebrate those who have served in uniform."

1ID and Chicago have a long and deeply rooted connected history. Cantigny Park, the former estate of Col. Robert R. McCormick, is home to the First Division Museum, an institution dedicated to the history of the "Big Red One." For more than 60 years, the park has provided fascinating insights about America's 1st Division past and present.

"Veterans Day recognizes those who have served honorably in uniform," said Brig. Gen. Rodney Boyd, Assistant Adjutant General for the Illinois National Guard. "Think about all the veterans who set aside their differences to be part of the military team”

Over three dozen Soldiers from the Division, each branch of the United States military, and local civic leaders took part in the ceremony, which took place in front of "American Doughboy" by Ernest Moore Viquesney. Doughboy was an informal term for a member of the United States Army or Marine Corps, primarily used to refer to members of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I.

"Veterans Day is our sacred opportunity to remember and thank veterans of past and present for proudly serving our country," said Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. "As we honor their bravery and sacrifice, we must demonstrate our gratitude to veterans and their families by ensuring they come home to a city that cares for them and fights for their happiness and prosperity in return."

The Division marked its return to the city amid some elements deployed forward to areas of Eastern Europe, supporting the United States European Command Enhanced deterrence initiative.

"I'm extremely proud to be a part of this division and would like to thank the city of Chicago for hosting us today," said U.S. Army Capt. Chase Antony. "As someone who grew up here, it's heart-warming to&nbsp; witness this while also seeing Soldiers from across the Division take part in this ceremony is such a monumental and special occasion for me."

For active duty and veterans alike, this ceremony reflected the service and sacrifice of those who continue to support and serve the nation.
