Patriot Day Career Fair will occur in September

Junction City Commissioners have approved a resolution authorizing staff to seek a low-cost state revolving loan to help with both the southwest and east wastewater plant Phase II improvements.

The goal is to create efficiencies, operational capacity and meet federal requirements for discharge of treated wastewater. Improvements would range from sludge thickening and storage to new or upgraded administration buildings at the plants.

The estimated cost would be approximately $59 million with a two year, nine-month construction time frame.&nbsp;

The improvements to the wastewater plants are being done to meet&nbsp; federal mandated requirements. The plan is to&nbsp; repay the loan through future sewer rates.

Junction City will seek a low-cost loan for wastewater plant improvements 

Around 6:00 pm Wednesday evening, Riley County Police Department responded to an injury crash at the intersection of Anderson Avenue and Westloop Place.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a 2008 Hyundai Accent driven by 78-year old Anna McCormick of Manhattan, had been hit by a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by 17-year old Carly Pearsall of Manhattan.

Officers determined McCormick failed to yield at the intersection.

Pearsall was transported by Riley County EMS to Ascension Via Christi for treatment of head pain.

McCormick was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way.

The Riley County Police Department responded to a&nbsp;motorcycle crash on westbound K-18 on Wednesday afternoon.

Manhattan woman airlifted to hospital after motorcycle crash

Irwin Army Community Hospital at Fort Riley has posted a social media notice on delays in patient care. The hospital is experiencing technical difficulties which may create delays in patient care including appointment scheduling, pharmacy, lab and radiology.

The estimated time for resolution is noon Thursday.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent attack on a jail officer in Riley County.

Just after 3p.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for battery on a law enforcement officer and aggravated robbery at the Riley County Jail in Manhattan, according to the police department activity report.

A 20-year-old inmate body slammed a 29-year-old corrections officer in his cell and stole the officer's radio and keys.&nbsp; Other corrections officers quickly restrained the inmate.

EMS transported the injured corrections officer to Via Christi for treatment of back pain and scrapes. He was later released. 

The inmate was transported to Osawatomie State Hospital for mental health evaluation.

Corrections officer injured after body slammed by inmate

Fall semester classes begin Monday at Kansas State University. In Manhattan that's good news since it means thousands of KSU students are arriving in the community.&nbsp;

There is increased traffic and longer lines&nbsp; in stores and restaurants but the addition of thousands of students is considered by many welcome news.

Jason Smith, Chamber of Commerce President, said Manhattan is a college town. "So we sort of feel empty when we don't have students here. So just culturally I think the town feels more vibrant and engaging when the students are here. It's who we are."

Smith noted that's important economically because students shop and their return helps the local businesses and restaurants. Many of the students work in the local establishments as well. "Certainly now when we're in the labor crunch we're in across the country, being able to have workers of all types is important and we have a lot of students that fill those spots."&nbsp;

Smith noted that just having the students back make the residents feel better and makes Manhattan who they are as a community.

Dennis Cook, Aggieville Business Association Executive Director, considers Aggieville the heart of the town and the "excitement part of coming back to K-State." We have a lot of businesses that depend on the college students to not only come down and be a part of who we are but they're also a big number of our employees so we're anxious to have school back."

For the businesses in Aggieville Cook noted that the biggest part of the year is the fall. "The fall semester, this is where businesses really make it so we're excited."

Students coming into Aggieville will find a brand new parking garage that holds more than 450 vehicles. "We're going to be encouraging people to use the new parking garage because one of the main streets, North Manhattan Ave., is under construction and it will be for probably the whole fall and part-way through the spring semester. So it's important for people to come down here and use the parking garage. It's very accessible and it's going to be free until the end of the year."

Riley County Police Patrol Captain Greg Steere noted that there is a lot of construction under way in the community and that changes on a week-to-week and month-to-month basis. Motorists should be mindful of that as they travel in and around Manhattan.&nbsp;

Steere said a lot of students are coming back for school so more people will be on the roadway. "Also in the last year or so we've had a bit of an increase in our overall accident numbers so we're trying to do everything that we can to just let folks know that we need their help to do everything they can to be safe and be aware of other motorists."

Police are starting an accident reduction initiative called ARC, Accident Reduction Citation. "We're going to be out doing a little more enforcement and we're trying to focus on behaviors that we know cause accidents." Steere added that almost always, some kind of distracted driving or inattention play a big factor. "Our historical three things are almost always related to following too close, failure to yield or other aggressive driving actions like speeding or things like that." RCPD is trying to focus on measures that will affect some of those behaviors.

Twenty mile per hour school speed zones will be in effect at locations across the city and where large groups of people can congregate at locations Steele encouraged people to be aware of their surroundings. "We always encourage students especially, to try as much as you can, especially late at night. Be together, stay in groups is always a good thing to do." Archaeology and Artifacts: Cookie Excavation will be presented by the Geary County Historical Society during STEAM Saturday. The event is scheduled this Saturday ( Aug. 20 ) from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Historical Museum.&nbsp;

Participants can learn basic principles of archaeology in this activity. People of all ages can try their hand at site mapping, excavation and artifact handling. Cookies will be used in the process.

Geary County Commissioners will conduct a public hearing on the proposed 2023 County budget on Aug. 22 at 11 a.m. at the County Office Building.

Trish Giordano said the planned County budget includes a drop in the property tax mill levy from 70.4 this year to 60.1 mills next year. "$1.1 million we're asking less from the taxpayers." The amount is four mills under the revenue neutral rate

Giordano cited the use of detailed budgeting as a factor in the ability to make a reduction, "and you know where your money is going. " There was excess carryover cash in some of the accounts. "I think that actually freed up some monies to where we were actually able to take care of the hospital, our employees with our wage study and the taxpayers so I feel it's a win win this year."

Following the public hearing the commission can adopted the 2023 budget.

The Wamego Police Department (WPD),&nbsp;along with the Riley County Police Department (RCPD), are asking the community's help in locating two runaway teen girls.

WPD had previously <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/5ae2aab2-d674-41b5-949d-28dea5cf0e02">requested assistance on Monday, August 15th</a> in locating missing 15-year old, Trinity after she ran away from a residence in Salina, Kansas on August 12, 2022.

Trinity is 5'2" and weighs approximately 130 pounds. She had red and black hair when she was last seen.&nbsp;

She is believed to be in the Manhattan, Junction City or Fort Riley areas, and may be accompanied by now missing 16-year old Alejandra.

Alejandra is a female runaway from Manhattan. She is 5'7" and weighs approximately 125 pounds. Alejandra has brown eyes and frequently changes the color of her hair.

UPDATE: Alejandra located, Trinity remains missing; Law enforcement searching for runaway teens

RILEY COUNTY—Six people were injured in an accident just after 6p.m. Tuesday in Riley County.

A 2011 Ford F-150 driven by Gabriel Anderson, 24, of Clay Center was&nbsp; westbound on Madison Road at North Billings Street and rear-ended a 2016 Lincoln Navigator driven by Mohammad Nomani, 40, of Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The impact caused the Navigator to spin into the eastbound lane where it was rear-ended again by a 2017 Ford F-150 driven by Nathan Mead, 45, of Manhattan. 

EMS transported an adult female and three juvenile passengers in the Lincoln and&nbsp; an adult female and one juvenile passenger in the 2017 Ford to Via Christi for treatment of minor injuries.

 Anderson was issued a citation for following too closely, according to the RCPD.

6 hospitalized after 3-vehicle Riley Co. crash

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s guest speakers on August 17 were Melanie Laster and Jim Sands, who are among those working on the Buffalo Soldier Trail Project in Geary County. Melanie is the Secretary/Treasurer and Jim is the President. Others involved in the project include Margy Stewart, Delilah Hamilton, Fred Reid, and Heather Hagedorn.

Both expressed concern that “our rich history of the Black community in Geary County be celebrated and not get lost.” Jim Sands also said that “we need stories and artifacts brought to the Geary County Museum to remind us about the Black families and experiences of those families that lived and worked here.

The source of funding for this project to this point has come from a $10,000 grant provided by the Kansas Humanities Foundation. “Goals of the project are to educate people about the diversity and what we can continue to do to work together. Ways community members can help with the project is by donating lumber, printing, helping with signage, marketing, and concrete work.”

Laster stated that “this will not be a walking tour on a trail, but sites will be visited by car or bus around different parts of the city.” The sites currently identified on the Buffalo Soldier Trail will include the Geary County Historical Society Museum; Ward Chapel AME Church; Buffalo Soldier Monument; Pawnee Park and Village; The Buffalo Soldier Service Organization (USO); The Pentecostal Church; Church of God; VFW Post 8773; Highland Cemetery; Second Missionary Baptist Church and the entrance to Rathert Field. The plan is to have signage with information at or near the site to explain the significance of that site to the visitor.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club meets every Wednesday at the Hampton Inn located at 1029 S. Washington Street in Junction City. A free breakfast buffet is available for those who attend a meeting for the first time, which is served at 6:30 AM. The Optimist Club meeting begins at 6:50 AM.

RILEY COUNTY—A Manhattan woman was injured in an accident just after 1p.m. Tuesday.

A 2019 Jeep Cherokee driven by 71-year-old Beth Bergsten of Manhattan, was traveling near&nbsp; the intersection of Wildcat Creek Road and N. Scenic Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. 

The Jeep flipped into the trees near Wildcat Creek. EMS transported Bergsten to Via Christi for treatment of minor injuries. The RCPD released no additional details.

Legacy Kansas is the official name while the subtitle for the new restaurant in Abilene is Munson's Prime Steaks Brookville Family Style Chicken. Deanna and Chuck Munson purchased the former Brookville Hotel that has been closed for several months and have combined it with their former Munson Prime restaurant which was destroyed by a fire.&nbsp;

Deanna Munson said the history of both entities dates back into the 1800's. "The Brookville Hotel and the family that started it goes back to 1870. If you look at the Munson history of establishing the meat which is the reason why we had the restaurant, Munson's Prime, that all started in 1869 when Carl Munson came to Junction City." Munson began to acquire cattle and in 1924 the family went to a registered cow herd. Munson's Prime was opened in 2014. "So we're talking legacy of both entities."

Deanna said right now reservations only are required to eat at Legacy Kansas. Challenges hiring enough staff to do walk in open seating is the reason why. Currently about 100 people can be served. "This facility could seat 225 people at a setting, but right now we have 12 people ( employees ). We need 40 to 50 employees in order to truly do the whole thing. "

At this point the restaurant is serving the fried chicken dinner with all of the sides that the Brookville Hotel served. They are also serving an option of country fried steak instead of the chicken. Eventually there will be gourmet steaks and burgers served, and at that time there will be a plated menu as well as the family style chicken dinners. Later homemade Munson ice cream will be served, and in the meantime Call Hall ice cream is being brought in from K-State.

The restaurant is open 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday, and 11 until 2 and 4:30 - 7:30 on Sundays. You can make reservations at legacykansasabilene.com or by calling 1-785-200-3973 Thursday through Monday from 2:30 to 6:30.

Long awaited dining destination opens in Abilene

Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Kansas Chapter 21-1 will host their annual 9 / 11 Dice Run to benefit local Soldiers and Veterans.

The event is scheduled on Sept. 10 with registration going from 9 - 10 a.m. at City Cycle Sales in Junction City. The first bike is out at 9:30 a.m. and the last bike at 10:15 a.m.&nbsp; The last bike will be due in at 4:30 p.m. at the American Legion in Chapman.

There will be breakfast available for purchase.&nbsp;

Cost per card for the run is $15 for the first one, $5 for an additional card and $1 for a bug Dot challenge. Pay outs for highest overall score, lowest overall score and 100%&nbsp; payout for the Bug dot.&nbsp;

Raffle tickets will be available on site for the raffle to be awarded at&nbsp; the final stop in Chapman. The cost is $20 for a stretch of tickets and $1 per ticket.

There has been a vacancy on the Geary County Public Building Commission for a few months. County Commissioner Keith Ascher said that they want to open it up to the general public. Geary County Commissioners received an update this week on the financial needs for the Fresh Start Emergency Shelter. Alex Tyson, Commission Chair, said the Shelter needs funding to help with staff and providing basic services. "From noon until four they are able to provide one meal a day, "but they're looking for possibly growing and getting some staff in there to fill longer hours."

Tyson said Shelter officials did not have a specific funding request. In recent weeks the County had stopped providing funding for the facility but Tyson noted that the governing body may look at giving the Shelter the amount that the County had authorized for this year. There would still have to be a determination on an amount for 2023.

Local officials have been working on a $32 million bond issue to help the financially challenged GCH make it through the year until Jan. 1st when Stormont Vail is scheduled to assume oversight of Geary Community.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A 7-year-old Kansas boy injured in a 3-vehicle crash August 10 in Pottawatomie County has died.

&nbsp;On Saturday, 7-year-old Korbin Tinkel of Wamego died from injuries in the crash that also took the life of his father, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

&nbsp;Just after 5:30p.m. Wednesday,&nbsp;a 2015 Western semi driven by&nbsp; Mark E&nbsp;Stanwix, 44, Lecompton, was eastbound on U.S. 24 just west of Airport Road.

The semi rear-ended a 2008 Ford Edge driven by Megan K. Schindler, 34, St. Mary's, who was slowing and coming up behind a 2013 Ford F250 driven by Randy L. Tinkel, 37, Wamego, who was stopped waiting to make a left turn.&nbsp; The impact pushed the semi and Ford Edge into the pickup.

The Ford Edge came to rest on its side north of the roadway. The Ford F250 came to rest on the south side of the roadway on its roof. The semi&nbsp; came to rest on the south of the roadway in a field.

Randy Tinkel was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Stewart's Funeral Home.

EMS transported a Korbin Tinkel and a 2-year-old boy in the pickup to Children's Mercy.&nbsp; EMS transported a third passenger in the Ford F 250 Jillian C Tinkel, 36, Wamego, to Wamego Health Center.

EMS transported Schindler to Stormont Vail. Stanwix was not injured. The 2-year-old in the Ford was the only occupant properly restrained, according to the KHP.

According to a release from the Public Works Department only brush and tree limbs will be accepted. The service will be free for Geary County residents and $15 per ton for commercial customers.

The Landfill is located just south of Interstate 70, Exit 298.
