Junction City Municipal Pool is an aging facility. City Manager Allen Dinkel said there is always talk about the ability to do an outdoor pool or aquatic park, and that's in the cards.&nbsp; He noted because of the debt load the City hasn't been able to do anything for the last 15 years. "We've been predicting that by 2027, 2028, 2029 it's going to be a real feasibility to do and of course that's not that many years out."

Dinkel noted as the City acquires the land at the former high school site the question is do they consider an indoor aquatic facility there or do they undertake a combination. "I think over the next few years all those things will be discussed." 

Dinkel added that the current sales tax for debt service expires in 2030 and officials hope if they remain on track that could expire a couple of years earlier. "And then we could talk about the possibility of going to the voters just for that ( new swimming facility )."Discussion on any facility very early.

The City plans to acquire the former high school from USD 475 once the demolition of the old high school is complete.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a violent crime in Manhattan and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 2:30 p.m. Saturday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery in the 1300 block of Flint Hills Pl. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 27-year-old man reported a 32-year-old male suspect identified&nbsp; as Mark Rickenbacker stabbed him in the neck with a pocket knife.

The victim was treated at Via Christi and later released.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, police asked the public for help to locate Rickenbacker in connection with the case. Just after 2p.m. the RCPD reported they had him in custody.&nbsp; Police have not released any requested charges.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a school teacher for alleged child sex crimes.

Allen Sylvester, 51, who is listed as a <a href="https://www.usd320.com/vnews/display.v/StaffDirectory">science teacher </a>in Wamego, according to the USD 320 web site, is in custody on requested charges of sexual exploitation of a child and electronic solicitation, "Offender believes child &gt;14&lt;16." according to online jail records.

Sylvester is being held on a $100,000 bond. USD 320 has not issued a statement on the arrest.

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 10:30a.m. Saturday in Riley County.

A 2013 Ford Mustang driven by Carey Green, 36, Westmoreland,&nbsp; was&nbsp; eastbound on Tuttle Creek Blvd. at South&nbsp; Dam Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The Ford struck a 2010 Toyota Highlander driven by William Jaggers, 24, Westmoreland, who failed to yield as he was turning south from Tuttle Creek Blvd onto South Dam Road.

The force of the impact caused Toyota to strike a 2004 GMC Yukon driven by Brian Casey, 57, of Manhattan, who was northbound on South Dam Road and stopped at a stop sign.

EMS transported Green to Via Christi for treatment of a head injury, according to the RCPD. Jaggers was issued a citation for failure to yield.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Nearly three dozen Kansas kids will test their horse sense when the annual&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/contests/horse-judging/index.html" target="_blank">4-H horse judging contest</a>&nbsp;takes place at Manhattan’s Cico Park on June 9.&nbsp;

The winners in the senior division will advance to the national horse judging contest during the National Western Stock Show in Denver next January, said&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H Youth Development</a>&nbsp;specialist Shannon Rogge.&nbsp;

“We are trying to mimic an industry horse judging show,” Rogge said. “Youth will judge horse classes and evaluate them on how they place against the official standards. Once they turn in their placings, they will give oral reasons to a judge on why they placed the class the way they did, using industry terminology.”&nbsp;

The state contest is available to Kansas 4-H members ages 9 and older, competing in intermediate and senior divisions. Individual and team awards are up for grabs.&nbsp;

Rogge said that the Kansas State University horse judging team is hosting a camp June 7-8 for youth interested in honing their skill prior to the state contest. Flash Flood Watch is issued

&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects after a confrontation in northeast Kansas.

On May 28, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a theft in progress at Walmart in Holton, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

Deputies observed two individuals, later identified as Monica Ann Bustamante, 43, of Junction City, Kansas, and John Richard Tidwell, 47, of St. Louis, Missouri, inside the store allegedly concealing merchandise.

Law enforcement confronted both individuals as they were leaving the store. During the investigation, stolen merchandise was recovered and it is was discovered Tidwell was on federal supervised release from previous weapons charges, as well as distribution and manufacturing methamphetamine, according to Morse.

    A search of the vehicle associated with the pair revealed multiple items of drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine.  Tidwell and Bustamante were arrested and transported to the Jackson County Jail. Both subjects were booked into the Jail on requested charges of theft, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of methamphetamine, according to Morse. Bustamante is no longer in custody.

Col. Will McKannay, Fort Riley garrison commander, spoke at the ceremony. “It is right that we’re gathered here in this place on this day to honor our fallen heroes….”

Following the remarks, Col. McKannay and Command Sgt. Maj. Tim Speichert placed a wreath in honor of the fallen.

Admission will be charged, explained Stimatze. "Admission charge $5 to get in and this is the first time we've ever done this. But times have changed and we want to get better bands as we continue to grow. " 12 and under will be admitted free. There will also be a $200 VIP admission where beverages and a daily meal ticket are provided.

Craft and food vendors will participate in Sundown Salute and on Saturday July 3 there will be a car show. There will also be a sanctioned Cornhole tournament on July 2-3.

50th annual Sundown Salute will be celebrated

There will be a Memorial Day observance at the C.L. Hoover Opera House in Junction City at 10 a.m. Monday. Command Sgt. Maj. ( Ret. ) William Allen will serve as the keynote speaker. The ceremony is being sponsored by the Geary County Veterans Alliance.

The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley will conduct their annual Memorial Day observance at 11:40 a.m. Monday at the Post Cemetery, 193 Huebner Rd.

Dorothy Bramlage Public Library has issued a release announcing that "Fundamental Photography" for high school aged and up will be the topic of a course on June 9th at 5:30 p.m.

This course will cover photography topics for beginning photographers, or those interested in becoming a photographer. There will be discussion on subjects such as light, how to tell a story in pictures, photo composition and different ideas for photo projects.&nbsp;

Local residents made visits to cemeteries on Saturday

Approximately 165 participants tried the Filthy Monkey Obstacle Course Race at the Junction City Athletic Training Center on Saturday. Rick Bazan, the coordinator for the event, estimated there were about 400 people in attendance, including the people that watched the competitors in open and kids divisions. "I think it's a family event. I think that's a good attraction. We're giving away bikes, I think that's an attraction. " Participants ran one-half mile and then tried their ability on the obstacle course.

Kendall Schoenrock participated in the event. "You start the course with a nice solid run. The obstacles include everything from a rope climb to climbing the walls. There's a slip and slide, a mud pit, everybody got wet and dirty and it was spectacular." Schoenrock said the event was an absolute blast with a great turnout and good sponsors. "Great thing for Junction City."

Filthy Monkey race is a fun event

FORT RILEY, Kan. (WIBW) - Fort Riley has opened its pools and newly renovated Custer Aquatic Park just in time for Memorial Day.

Fort Riley says garrison commander Col. Will McKannay, as well as public works and recreation leaders, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, May 26, for the military base’s new&nbsp;<a href="https://www.military.com/base-guide/fort-riley/contact/custer-hill-aquatic-park/19565" target="_blank">Custer Hill Aquatic Park</a>.

Staff at the base said the recently renovated facility now includes a pool with zero-depth entry, splash pad, a lazy river-style water channel, waterslides and more.

Ft. Riley noted that the Aquatic Center will be open from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Admission is $1 for children 2 and under, $5 for children 3 and up, and $8 for non-Department of Defense guests.

Staff also indicated access to Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation pools is also now available for MWR cardholders.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association State Track Meet is under way Friday and Saturday at Cessna Stadium in Wichita. We will update area athlete results at JC Post.

State Track and Field Results

One of the signs of the summer season arrives on Saturday when the Junction City Municipal Swimming Pool opens. Hours Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be 1-7 p.m.

City officials said that they will be a bit short staffed for the first couple weeks of the season because lifeguards are still being trained. By mid-June they're hoping to be open more normal hours. Enough lifeguards have been hired but training is still occurring.

Pilot Club of Junction City did a " PICK ME UP" for the Junction City Fire Station Two.

Ladies from the club delivered home baked goods to the firemen on Wednesday in appreciation of their work in the service of the community.
