RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating another gun taken from an unlocked vehicle.

Just after 6:30a.m. Thursday, officers a filed report for burglary in the 700 block of Allen Rd. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 23-year-old man reported his unlocked truck was entered and a Smith and Wesson MP Shield handgun was stolen. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $500. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Junction City Athletic Training Center, 935 E. 4th,&nbsp; will host their fifth annual Filthy Monkey Obstacle Course on Saturday. Open division competition begins at 9 a.m. and the kids division at 9:30 a.m.

Rick Bazan, Coordinator, said there will be a short run and then participants go into the obstacle course. "There's 21 obstacles. Some of them are mud, and some of&nbsp; them are wet." Bazan stated, "We always say it takes a monkey to get through the course, and your going to be filthy so let's name it the Filthy Monkey."

There will be awards and prizes including bicycle helmets, four bicycles, tote bags and batting cage tokens.

Serving as master of ceremonies will be the Executive Director for the Society of the 1st Infantry Division, Phyllis Fitzgerald, Junction City. She noted it is an annual observance for the Society along with representation most years from the Division leadership.

Fitzgerald called it an honor to be part of a historic event that happens every year. "We are doing what we should be doing, which is honoring and remembering all those that have lost their lives for our freedom."

The 1st Infantry Division monument is located adjacent to the White House. "It was erected by the Society of the 1st Infantry Division. It was dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge, Oct. 4, 1924.&nbsp; All the funds for that monument itself have been raised privately by the Society."

Fitzgerald said on the monument walls are the names of 12,947 of our fallen that have lost their lives in war between World War I and Desert Storm. "We've been working for the past several years to get the post 911 names added to that monument, and that's another 631 names."

The United State's Attorney's office reported Chelsea Pulse, 27, of Junction City is charged with one count of embezzlement of the mail, two counts of theft of the mail, and one count of delay of mail. The U.S. Postal Service is investigating the case.

Twin Valley's fiber internet project will expand in Junction City

TOPEKA, KAN. – A federal grand jury in Topeka indicted a U.S. Army service member for allegedly participating in a scheme to fraudulently obtain approximately $149,476 from at least 25 individuals, according to the United State's Attorney.

According to court documents, Innocent N. Ugwu, 24, of Fort Riley, Kansas, is charged with five counts of wire fraud, five counts of laundering monetary instruments, and one count of procurement of citizenship or naturalization unlawfully. 

From an unknown date until January 2021, Ugwu is accused of conspiring with others to defraud money from individuals in the United States using false pretenses and promises, and the omission of material facts to carry out romance, advance fee and other fraudulent schemes.

The U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Defense, Defense Criminal Investigative Service are investigating the case.

Junction City Public Works prepares to begin their summer schedule

Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission on Wednesday held a public hearing on complaints that were filed against Junction City Mayor Jeff Underhill and his campaign treasurer Monte Dibben, pertaining to the last city commission election in 2021. The complaint alleged Underhill and Dibben failed to file a Jan. 10, 2022 receipts and expenditures report in violation of state law.

General Counsel for the Commission, Brett Barry, stated after giving notice of the hearing to Underhill and Dibben the Commission took up the matter of the report which had allegedly not been filed. "Based on a proffer of the evidence they concluded that Mr. Underhill and Mr. Dibben had not filed the report as alleged in the complaint. " 

Barry said Underhill and Dibben did not attend the hearing at the Governmental Ethics Commission Offices in Topeka. "Based on the fact they did not appear found them in default and ordered that they pay a fine of $5,000. That fine could be reduced to $1,000 if they were able to pay within 30 days and also submit the report which is due and owing within 30 days. " Both Underhill and Dibben were each fined $5,000, but could again, reduce that amount to $1,000 apiece.

Under the Campaign Finance Act all candidates are required to file the campaign finance reports, which detail all the campaign contributions and all the expenditures that are made within a given period.&nbsp;

Jeff Underhill told JC Post it was an oversight on the part of himself and Dibben. "Kind of a comedy of errors because I moved during that time and so I wasn't receiving all of the notifications that they were sending but we're both aware. We've both visited with them and we're working to get it resolved. It was nothing malicious, just an honest oversight."

Underhill said he knew about the hearing Wednesday but didn't think that he had to attend because they requested that he send an email, which he had done. "We should be okay, just from the communications that I've had that, that we are working to get it resolved though."

Underhill noted that the the fines will be paid and the report submitted within the 30 day time period.&nbsp; "Like I said we're moving forward on getting everything resolved." Dibben chose not to comment.

High school students from across the State of Kansas will be participating in the 2022 session of the&nbsp;<a href="https://ksbstate.org/" target="_blank">American Legion Boys State of Kansas</a>, Sunday, June 5, through Saturday, June 11, at Kansas State University in Manhattan. The event, in its 84th year, returns to its traditional early June dates after last year’s session was postponed to early August due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This year’s Kansas Boys State program includes delegates who just completed their junior year of high school (will be seniors in the fall) and sophomore year of high school (will be juniors in the fall).

The objective of the ALBSK is to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. Kansas Boys State provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

84th annual Boys State of Kansas set for next month in Manhattan

JC Breakfast Optimist Club members received a report Wednesday on the Summer Camp at the Museum this week. Patsy Johnson, Geary County Historical Society Director of Programs and Education, said her goal is to have "learning about history be fun through hands-on STEAM ( science, technology, engineering, art and math). The focus is on Geary County History.

Focus areas are ranging from the Ice Age and dinosaurs that lived in this area to tornadoes, the Dust Bowl and flooding. There is also an opportunity for students to build a smores solar oven. In this engineering project, students will be given the materials to make the oven but cannot heat up the smores until they figure out how to get the oven to work.

It is important to know the facts about catastrophes like tornadoes and the Dust Bowl but also figure out ways to prevent them or minimize the damage in the future, said Johnson.

Johnson also has gone into many of the schools and nursing homes to do presentations about Geary County history. Patsy and her husband will soon be moving to North Carolina, where she hopes to be involved with a non-profit and teach STEAM concepts.

In honor of the outgoing 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team commander, Col. Thomas B. "Bull" Smith, the ceremony also welcomed the incoming brigade commander, Col. Bryan M. Harris, with the passing of the brigade colors. &nbsp;"The most significant portion of today is we transferred responsibility,"said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. John V. Meyer III, commanding general of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley. "We are very lucky to have [Smith] command this formation with his family and then now to move up to be the division chief of staff. His passion, his presence, his energy, is going to make a difference when we get to Europe." Smith, a veteran of twenty-six years, assumed command of the 2ABCT in August of 2020.&nbsp; "It's a great day to be in the Army and even a better day to be a Big Red One Soldier," said Smith. "It's a job well done. The proof is in the safety of our troops, the success of our operations, and the continued challenges that are sent Dagger's way." For his service with the 2ABCT, Smith was awarded the Legion of Merit.&nbsp; Harris, who grew up in North College Hill in southwestern Ohio, began his Army career on May 30, 1998. Demonstrations will range from a seatbelt convincer to a rollover simulator. There will also be a car seat check lane so parents can make sure that they have the right car seat properly installed for their children.

The public is invited to this event and those without a Department of Defense ID card, can get a visitor’s pass at the Visitor Control Center on Henry Drive, at Exit 301 off I-70.

" Grismer confirmed that will be up to the doctors on whether to accept the offers.

This information was provided as Geary Community Hospital and Stormont Vail Regional Health Center officials work toward a potential future agreement where Stormont Vail would oversee GCH operations.

Grismer explained the doctors from Geary Community will go through a process with Stormont Vail. "It's an opportunity for them to meet one on one with the physicians and take them through the process that they do with all of their employed physicians. " Grismer added that they want the doctors to meet the department chairs, tour the Stormont Vail facility, learn about their resources and give them an opportunity "to move their identity to one of Stormont Vail."

Fort Riley to host annual Memorial Day observance

Wash hands, use a meat thermometer are among top tips&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee says food safety needs to be part of summer parties, especially when those get-togethers involve grilling food outdoors.&nbsp;

“To start with,” she said, “wash your hands. That’s the No. 1 step before you start handling any food, and then wash them again after you’ve handled any kind of raw meat.”&nbsp;

Much like cooking food indoors, home chefs need to keep a food thermometer close at hand, Blakeslee said. For meat, there are three temperatures that consumers should store to memory:

Those temperatures include products that are smoked, cooked on a grill or indoors.&nbsp;

The recommended temperatures relate to the internal temperature of the meat. “Without a food thermometer, it’s very subjective” as to whether the meat is cooked properly, Blakeslee said. Judging doneness by color or pressing the meat with your finger are also subjective, she noted.&nbsp;

To more accurately measure for doneness, insert the tip of the thermometer into the center of the meat. With a digital thermometer, the temperature sensor is normally in the tip, so those can be inserted into the top of the meat product.&nbsp;

“But the ideal way to do it – like with a hamburger – is to insert it from the side,” Blakeslee said. “That is the best way to reach the center of the product.”&nbsp;

A thermometer with a dial display is another option. “If you look on the stem of a dial face thermometer, there should be a dimple, about halfway up the stem. Insert this type of thermometer into the food so that the little dimple gets into the meat product to get an accurate measurement.”&nbsp;

Some other food safety tips that Blakeslee offered:&nbsp;

Keep meat cold until you’re ready to use it&nbsp;

Resist the temptation to let meat sit on a counter for long periods of time. “You could let it warm up a little bit (before cooking) – about 30 minutes. But please refrain from letting it sit out for hours. That invites any bacteria that could be on the meat to start growing.”&nbsp;

Freeze meat that won’t be used soon after you buy it&nbsp;

If planning an event, consider buying meat 2-3 days before cooking it. Otherwise, Blakeslee said, “you need to freeze it.”&nbsp;

Frozen meat is best thawed in the refrigerator, not on a countertop. “Plan ahead for thawing,” Blakeslee said. “The amount of thawing time you’ll need depends on the size of your meat product.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee said mayonnaise often gets a bad rap for being a food safety concern, but the popular dressing is high in acid and can fend for itself.&nbsp;

“Mayo is not the problem,” Blakeslee said. “It’s what you mix into the mayo that is the problem. Cooked potatoes, hard boiled eggs…those are the ingredients that need refrigeration to reduce food safety risks.&nbsp;

“The mayonnaise is just going along for the ride,” she adds. “So, give mayonnaise a break. It’s how you handle the rest of the food that really matters.”&nbsp;

Wash hands, use a meat thermometer are among top tips&nbsp;By Pat Melgares, K-State Research and Extension news service&nbsp;MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee says food safety needs to be part of summer parties, especially when those get-togethers involve grilling food outdoors.&nbsp;“To start with,” she said, “wash your hands. That’s the No. 1 step before you start handling any food, and then wash them again after you’ve handled any kind of raw meat.”&nbsp;Much like cooking food indoors, home chefs need to keep a food thermometer close at hand, Blakeslee said. For meat, there are three temperatures that consumers should store to memory: <ul>
 <li>145 degrees Fahrenheit&nbsp;for steaks, roasts, chops, fish and other whole cuts of meat. </li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>160 F&nbsp;for ground meat, including beef, pork and lamb. </li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>165 F&nbsp;for all types of poultry. </li>
 </ul>Those temperatures include products that are smoked, cooked on a grill or indoors.&nbsp;The recommended temperatures relate to the internal temperature of the meat. “Without a food thermometer, it’s very subjective” as to whether the meat is cooked properly, Blakeslee said. Judging doneness by color or pressing the meat with your finger are also subjective, she noted.&nbsp;To more accurately measure for doneness, insert the tip of the thermometer into the center of the meat. With a digital thermometer, the temperature sensor is normally in the tip, so those can be inserted into the top of the meat product.&nbsp;“But the ideal way to do it – like with a hamburger – is to insert it from the side,” Blakeslee said. “That is the best way to reach the center of the product.”&nbsp;A thermometer with a dial display is another option. “If you look on the stem of a dial face thermometer, there should be a dimple, about halfway up the stem. Insert this type of thermometer into the food so that the little dimple gets into the meat product to get an accurate measurement.”&nbsp;Some other food safety tips that Blakeslee offered:&nbsp;Keep meat cold until you’re ready to use it&nbsp;Resist the temptation to let meat sit on a counter for long periods of time. “You could let it warm up a little bit (before cooking) – about 30 minutes. But please refrain from letting it sit out for hours. That invites any bacteria that could be on the meat to start growing.”&nbsp;Freeze meat that won’t be used soon after you buy it&nbsp;If planning an event, consider buying meat 2-3 days before cooking it. RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged violent crime and have made an arrest.

Just after 9a.m. Tuesday, officers a filed report for aggravated assault, criminal trespass, and criminal damage to property in the 200 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;Max Motors, a 41-year-old man, and a 54-year-old woman reported a 32-year-old male suspect identified as&nbsp;Christian Ociel Urquizo Gandarilla, 32, of Manhattan threatened the man and woman with a hammer and threw a rock at a Chevrolet Traverse owned by Max Motors. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $50. 

Pottawatomie County authorities arrested Gandarilla on requested charges of criminal trespass and two counts of aggravated assault. and transported to the Pottawatomie County Jail.

RCPD: Manhattan man threatened victims with a hammer

Home Medical Equipment, 1310 West Ash, Junction City, has been affiliated with Geary Community Hospital. But that will change. 

The Interim CEO for the hospital, Margaret Grismer, addressed the situation as GCH works toward a proposed future agreement with Stormont Vail Regional Health to operate Geary Community. "Stormont Vail does not currently run Home Medical Equipment, so that's a service line that they don't intend to bring through with the contract."

Grismer said Home Medical Equipment is not closing because there are several potential buyers in the pipeline that want to keep it open in Junction City, but it will leave the ownership of Geary Community and move to a new buyer.&nbsp;

On whether the store would remain in the same location, Grismer said that she was not sure. "We also will be looking at the sale of that building over there. We also have two or three potential buyers that have shown some interest. So we don't know whether the Home Medical Equipment will stay in that building or not at this point." Grismer added that both the business and building will be up for sale to potential local and national buyers, but it will stay in the community.
