&nbsp;MANHATTAN — Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson's goal for his last year at Kansas State University was to finish on a high note — and not just in football. He wanted to positively impact people by supporting cancer research at the university he loves. In October 2021, Thompson and his family established the&nbsp;<a href="https://cancer.k-state.edu/support/thompsonfund.html" target="_blank">Thompson Family Cancer Research Fund</a>&nbsp;for the university's&nbsp;<a href="https://cancer.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Johnson Cancer Research Center</a>&nbsp;in memory of his mother, Teresa Lynn Thompson, and grandfather, John Walter Thompson. Thompson's mother died of breast cancer when he was 6 years old. Seven months later, his grandfather died of pancreatic cancer. The losses affected Thompson. "They were two of the most influential and meaningful people in my life, and I had a really hard time wrapping my mind around those losses," Thompson said. "I now believe a big reason I've faced these challenges is so I can have the ability to impact others while honoring my mom and grandfather." Thompson donated proceeds from the October sales of his "Stronger Together" apparel in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. He also used a personal email message and social media to invite K-State supporters to donate to the fund. "I have a deep love and passion for K-State," Thompson said. Greg Doering, Kansas Farm Bureau I recently saw my first copperhead of the year while out trying to catch some pre-spawn bass at a farm pond. Initially I thought it was a snapping turtle poking its head above the water before I caught a glimpse of the telltale oscillation of the more sinister reptile. As is usually the case when I encounter a serpent in the wild, the old adage that it’s just as afraid of me as I am of it proved laughably false. If that held true, the two-foot reptile would have turned around when the first rock splashed near its head. Instead, it kept slithering closer to the bank where I stood. Clearly my dislike for this creature wasn’t reciprocated. It paid me no mind as it settled onto a rock about 30 yards away were it began basking in the sun. I resumed casting a lure into the water while keeping an eye on the danger coiled up a short distance away. Our interaction continued with me being vigilant on the snake’s whereabouts, while it regarded me with extreme indifference. It eventually warmed up enough to slither back into the water and across the pond. I took the opportunity to walk back to my tacklebox, keeping my eyes fixed on the ground for signs of another visitor. I safely fetched my gear and went on my way without seeing another serpent, but there were a few suspicious looking sticks that helped quicken my retreat. All of this fear is, of course, illogical. There’s no shortage of statistics detailing the just how unlikely my demise will come at the fangs of a snake. Of the several thousand people bitten each year, only about a dozen deaths are recorded. The venom in the native snakes of Kansas — three varieties of rattlers and the aforementioned copperhead — also is relatively mild according to the people who judge these things. By mild, I mean the venom will cause excruciating pain instead of killing you, which isn’t enough to overcome the strong desire for self-preservation. So, there’s an evolutionary case to be made for the illogical reactions being completely rational. I also learned a healthy amount of fear from family members. My grandfather once mistook a coil of hose for a black snake when spraying cattle in the corral. He raced across the pen and up a fencepost before warning the rest of us about the alleged intruder. While the rest of us found the situation quite comical, we also knew it could have been any of us fleeing in panic. I’ve stumbled over myself more than once after hearing a rattle in tall grass only to see a cicada fly off. Whether innate or learned, the fear is real. I spent a decent portion of my youth trying to imitate St. Patrick and eradicate snakes in my portion of the world. Blacksnakes, bull-snakes and other nonvenomous relatives were left alone to deal with vermin around the outbuildings, but even the sight of them would set my heart racing. The closest encounter I’ve ever had with any snake is when I was about 10 or so and stepped on a water snake while crossing a pond dam. I can still recall the squish under my boot in a way that gives me shivers. Once again, I was more bothered by our encounter than the snake. At least I pretended to be scared, what with my gasping and lurching and stumbling backward away from mortal danger. The snake barely lifted its head to flick its tongue in my direction. The one thing I haven’t managed over all these years is to develop a good sense of not going to the same places I regularly encounter snakes. I’m relying on a good pair of boots, long pants and the apparent apathy serpents have for my existence to keep me safe in the pastures, ponds and creeks over the Plains.

The project to demolish the former Junction City High School is progressing as expected. USD 475 Chief Operations Officer, David Wild, said this week that the former Deever building and nearby skywalk portion of the complex have been taken down.

'The major building on the southeast side is all now gutted and that will start coming down this week, said Wild. "Asbestos abatement is being finished up in the old kitchen area as well as the gymnasiums." Demolition work will continue in a northerly direction.

The football field turf, running track, tennis courts along two small classroom buildings on the west side will all be retained. "We're also going to leave some of the asphalt in place where we've traditionally staged parades so that we can continue to do that including the one this July 4th."

Wild expects the entire project to be completed by the end of August.

Demolition work moves forward on the old JCHS

Dr. Jason Butler informed a joint county - school board meeting this week that the impact of Geary Community Hospital on the community can't be understated. "

Hospital officials are working through financial challenges toward a possible future agreement with Stormont Vail Health in Topeka to&nbsp; provide hospital and clinic services in Geary County. 

Butler told the community leaders that there is "no choice but to make it happen." He informed JC Post that GCH is a significant economic driver in&nbsp; the community. "Not having a hospital within a 20 to 30 minute drive kind of safely impacts the care that we can provide." Butler added that there are benefits the community must have with&nbsp; the hospital.

Spreading out farther beyond GCH, Butler noted that there is a brand new high school, it's an amazing high school, maybe one of the best in the nation.&nbsp; "So if you're looking for a place to live you say alright we've got that. " He said that the next thing that people will look for is a hospital. The addition of Stormont Vail will result in movement from a local community hospital to a regional powerhouse, infrastructure will be improved and he also noted that the quality and efficiency of patient care can then be improved.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Butler added when that's combined with what is occurring with economic development in the community and Main Street three key aspects that have been created. "So if I'm a business looking for somewhere to go I say they've got three key things. They're going to be able to come in, take care of my kids at school, take care of my family in the hospital and we're going to have a place to go." He added when that is capitalized on it is just great for the community.

Butler said GCH must make it to Jan. 1, and once Stormont Vail takes over the hospital there will be a&nbsp; different scenario. He encouraged the public to reach out to county and city commissioners to let them know that you support this and that the hospital is a must have for the city.

Some members of the city commission and staff were also in attendance for the meeting.

The Kansas House of Representatives took the time to honor one of the state’s own before wrapping up Monday.

The House presented filmmaker and Junction City native Kevin Wilmott with a certificate recognizing his contributions to the state of Kansas through his work in the film industry.

Wilmott grew up in Junction City. He has since gone on to find success writing and directing films, including the Oscar-winning BlacKKKlansman.

Rebecca Nordyke said because redistricting was not completed by May 10 the law moves that to June 10 for anyone filing for Congress, the Kansas House or the State Board of Education. "June 1 remains the deadline for statewide offices and our local offices."

Nordyke stated that June 10 at noon is the deadline for anybody wanting to change parties before the Aug. primary election. "June 18 is when we will begin sending out the ballots to our overseas citizens."

Local races in Geary County would be for an unexpired term in the Treasurer's Office, County Commission District one and for township clerks and precinct people. The deadline for those positions is on June 1 at noon.

For offices such as governor, attorney general or secretary of state the deadline is also June 1 at noon.&nbsp;

On Monday following the recommendation of the county clerk, the Geary County Commission agreed to delay the redistricting of their commission&nbsp; districts until 2023.&nbsp; Nordyke said she had been discussing the matter with the commissioners for several weeks because of the lengthy time that had been taken to get the Congressional, House and Senate maps done. "We've got a lot of work to do to make those changes in those maps and so the county commission thankfully did agree to that."

Home Builders Institute (HBI), partnering with The Home Depot Foundation, to create a Career Skills Program on Fort Riley. HBI has just partnered with Habitat for Humanity to construct two new homes in Ogden, Kansas.

The partnership will allow transitioning service members to gain real world experience constructing homes while participating in the career skills program. This project also supports the local community and strengthens our ties with the surrounding area.

HBI students gain valuable experience and skills in the construction industry, to include carpentry and electrical pre-apprentice certificate training while instilling a sense of pride and volunteerism within the local community.&nbsp; Habitat for Humanity is working with HBI and the students and with that, there are no expectations for a completion date for the homes in Ogden, at this time.

HBI started their CSP with Fort Riley TAP in Dec 2019 and to date have conducted 21 classes on Fort Riley.&nbsp; An estimated 89 students will participate on this project over the next 8 months. But as the project continues, it is estimated to be well over 200 students.

Groundbreaking is scheduled for Friday, May 27th&nbsp;at 9am at 201 S Elm in Ogden.

Col. Bryan M. Harris, incoming commander will succeed the outgoing commander,&nbsp; Col. Thomas Brandon Smith. Harris most recently served with U.S. Army Human Resources Command. Smith's next assignment will at the Chief of Staff, 1st Infantry Division.

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and made an arrest.

Just before 10p.m. May 19, sheriff's deputies responded to Lion’s Den, located at 2349 Fair Road in Dickinson County, for a commercial business alarm, according to a social media report.

 Deputies discovered a man had entered the occupied business and removed property without permission, valued at more than $2,000. 

 After seeking assistance from the public through a Facebook post to help identify the suspect, Deputies were led to Washington, Kansas where the Washington County Sheriff’s Office located and detained 43-year-old Kenneth L. Riddle of Washington, Kansas and a vehicle. 

Dickinson County deputies took Riddle into custody and booked him on requested charges of Aggravated Burglary and Felony Theft. 

On Monday, with assistance from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 300 West 1st Street in Washington, Kansas and recovered the stolen property.

 </figure>DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and made an arrest.Just before 10p.m. May 19, sheriff's deputies responded to Lion’s Den, located at 2349 Fair Road in Dickinson County, for a commercial business alarm, according to a social media report. Deputies discovered a man had entered the occupied business and removed property without permission, valued at more than $2,000. After seeking assistance from the public through a Facebook post to help identify the suspect, Deputies were led to Washington, Kansas where the Washington County Sheriff’s Office located and detained 43-year-old Kenneth L. Riddle of Washington, Kansas and a vehicle. Dickinson County deputies took Riddle into custody and booked him on requested charges of Aggravated Burglary and Felony Theft. Six installation - community partnerships in the United States have been recognized. According to the Army, among the recipients of the Partnership Awards was Fort Riley for the demolition intergovernmental support agreement with Geary USD 475.

The agreement dealt with the removal of the former Jefferson Elementary School on post. A new elementary school is being built at that location.

Change the name from Grant Ave. to Scenic Bypass and then add landscaping to hide dilapidated buildings or sites. That could lead to a positive rather than a negative entrance to the city.

The idea was suggested by Board of Education member Jason Butler during a joint school district - county meeting that was also attended by city officials. There was some discussion on improving the aesthetics. "How do we make Grant Ave. something new, something different? And I thought we could rebrand it, "said Butler. "My brainstorm was to change the name from Grant Avenue,&nbsp; let's just throw out a name, Scenic Bypass."

Butler added that landscaping could be created on both sides of the scenic byway. He noted that then as you leave Fort Riley there would not be a historical negative connotation but nice greenspace. "So as you enter Junction City you're entering on a positive note, like a note that this is a place that takes care of itself, we're proud of ourselves and please come in, invites you into the city. "

Butler said the greenspace, if done appropriately, could hide dilapidated buildings. He said it creates an opportunity for someone who wants to have a business in the buildings and probably increases the value of those buildings. "In the meantime it kind of hides anything that may not have a good look to it."

There are businesses on Grant Ave. that are professional in appearance and properly maintained, but empty lots and dilapidated buildings are also located there.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor&nbsp;Laura Kelly welcomed the Kansas State University Classy Cats to the Statehouse to recognize the team’s 1A Pom National Championship title.

Governor Kelly <a href="https://governor.kansas.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/20220523142126009.pdf">signed a proclamation</a> declaring May 23, 2022, as "Kansas State Classy Cats Victory Day.”&nbsp;

"It is my great pleasure to welcome our very own K-State Classy Cats to the Statehouse to celebrate their first national title in the program’s history,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “After an incredible year, this talented group of young women became national champions thanks to their hard work and determination. They’ve made Kansas proud and have inspired so many young dancers across the state."

The K-State Classy Cats were named national champions for Division 1A last month at the College Classic National Invitational in Orlando, Florida, where they defeated runner-up Arizona State by 0.3 points in the final.&nbsp;

Organizers have announced that 2022 JC Oktoberfest will be held on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. This will be the second year for the annual event, which drew a big turnout last year to downtown Junction City.

Activities will range from craft beer and food to live music, events, games and contests.

Sherri Childs, Junction City,&nbsp; has filed for election to a two-year unexpired term in the Geary County Treasurer's post. She had been appointed to the Treasurer's position following the retirement of Kathy Tremont.

Childs has now filed to fill the remaining two years of the original four-year term that was being served by Tremont. Childs filed as a Republican.

Just before 12:30p.m. Friday, officers filed reports for burglary, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass in the 400 block of Ashwood Alley in Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Ashwood Mobile Home Park reported five empty trailer homes were broken into causing damage to multiple doors and windows, with at least one home having copper wire stolen.

 The estimated total loss associated with these cases is approximately $2,575. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday, officers filed a report for aggravated indecent liberties with a child in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Officers listed a 10-year-old girl as the victim and a 12-year-old boy known to her as the suspect. Due to the nature of this crime, police released no additional details.

Freedom on Wheels on July 2 will be held at 6th and Washington in downtown Junction City from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. You will be able to ride on Washington between 6th and 10th Streets.

RILEY COUNTY—A Manhattan man was injured in an accident just before 10:30a.m. Saturday in Riley County.

A 2007 GMC Sierra driven by Darrell Parks, 66, of Manhattan was southbound on East 26th Avenue crossing Zeandale Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The Sierra pickup pulled in front of and was struck by an eastbound 2010 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Donald Shelton, 60, of Manhattan. 

EMS transported Shelton to Via Christi for treatment of chest pain. Parks was issued a citation for failure to yield right of way at an uncontrolled intersection.

Lt. Gen. ( Ret. ) Perry Wiggins delivered the keynote remarks during&nbsp; a Run for the Wall visit to Junction City Sunday evening. "I think it's important that we do recognize the ones that sacrificed everything for this nation."

 Approximately 200 riders and other support personnel made Junction City a stopping point on their cross county ride from California to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Junction City. Wiggins said serving in combat and the cloth of the nation builds a bond which is hard to describe. "Those of you that are wearing the leathers and rode in on those big impressive motorcycles, you're completing a promise. That promise is we will never forget our fallen, our missing in action or our POW's.&nbsp;

The riders left I-70 and came up Washington Street to Heritage Park where there was a ceremony attended by the travel group and members of the community. There was a wreath laying at the base of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the Park.

Afterwards the riders were provided an evening meal at the Eagles Lodge. They will receive breakfast provided by the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association at the Eagles Lodge.
