Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is scheduled June 14 at 10 a.m. in Junction City. The run will begin at the Grant Ave. gate, crossing over Washington St. south on Jefferson to 6th St to Heritage Park.

Police said last year was one of the best years of attendance and the goal is to increase that number this year. To do that they are planning to give participants options for the run. One will be to go the full length and the other will be to run half.

Shirts will be available to purchase for $25. You may register online to run or purchase a shirt at http://www.junctioncity-ks.gov/.&nbsp;

Police noted that the start time is currently 10 a.m. but that time could be subject to change.

May 22nd through June 4 are the dates for the Click It or Ticket campaign. Junction City police said travelers can expect increased police presence on local streets as the JCPD joins 160 other law enforcement agencies in vigorously enforcing Kansas occupant restraint and other traffic laws as part of the campaign.

The aim of the campaign is to drastically reduce the number of preventable deaths and injuries that occur when unbelted drivers and passengers are involved in traffic crashes.

This effort is supported by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.4% in April. This was unchanged from 2.4% in March and a decrease from 3.5% in April 2021.

“While the unemployment rate remained steady at 2.4% over-the-month, it has seen significant improvement over-the-year as more Kansans move from unemployed to employed,” said Secretary Amber Shultz.  

The jobless rate in Geary County fell from 3.8 percent in March to 3 percent in April. Most counties across the region have an unemployment rate below 2 percent.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 500 from March. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 100 over the month, while government increased by 600.

“Preliminary estimates for April indicate little change over-the-month for seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs in Kansas,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “Small gains reported for multiple industries were offset by a decline in professional and business services. Despite the monthly decline for professional and business services, the industry has added jobs over-the-year.”

Since April 2021, Kansas seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 22,900. This change is due to an increase of 23,400 private sector jobs and a decrease of 500 government jobs.

RILEY COUNTY—Four people were injured in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Friday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Toyota RAV 4 driven by&nbsp;Stroud, Brandon JL Stroud, 15, Manhattan, was westbound on Marlatt Avenue and attempted to turn south on to Kansas 113. 

The driver failed to yield. A 1994 Ford F150 driven by&nbsp;Thaemert, Todd A. Thaemert, 59, Manhattan, struck the Toyota.

EMS transported a patient in the Toyota identified as 14-year-old Jackson West of Manhattan to Children's Mercy for treatment of serious injuries, according to the KHP.&nbsp; EMS also transported Stroud, Thaemert, and another passenger in the Toyota Arion Blanton to Via Christi. A third passenger in the Toyota was not transported.&nbsp; All five were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Jeff Underhill, Junction City,&nbsp; has filed for election to the 65th District seat in the Kansas House of Representatives.&nbsp; He tells JC Post if elected he plans to continue serving on the Junction City Commission where he has more than three years remaining on his term.

Incumbent Lonnie Clark confirms that he has decided not to seek reelection to the 65th District seat. This will be the final year for Clark in that seat that he has held for more than seven years.

Nathan Butler, Junction City, and John Seibel, Burdick, have filed for election to&nbsp; the 68th District seat in the Kansas House. Incumbent Dave Baker has not yet announced his intentions on running.

&nbsp;Junction City is split between the two House districts.

Mulitple Blue Jay Artists were recognized by the Alliance for Young Artists &amp; Writers during their 2022 Scholastic Art &amp; Writing Contest, Eastern Kansas Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition.  

According to a JCHS social media post, the Scholastic Art and Writing Contest is the oldest and most prestigious recognition program for creative teenagers in the U.S.  Each piece is reviewed by a panel of art professionals for originality, technical skill, and an emergence of professional vision and voice. 

 Six Blue Jay artists were recognized this year, with 2 Gold Key Awards and 6 Silver Key Awards, which are reserved for pieces that are considered truly exemplary by experts in the field!  Gold Key and Silver Key art pieces will be on display as part of the Eastern Kansas Scholastic Art Awards and featured in Mark Arts Youth Gallery and School of Creativity Gallery from February 18 – March 26, 2022.

Gold Key awards went to pieces by:  Dain Cortez and Corbin Scarff.  Their work is now eligible for the national competition!

Father and daughter celebrate associate degree completion at Barton Community College at Fort Riley; daughter participates in college commencement before high school graduation

Dawayne Krepel, 42, and his daughter Kathryn, 18, both accepted their associate degrees from Barton Community College at the Fort Riley Education Services commencement ceremony Thursday afternoon in Manhattan.

The duo represents the broad spectrum of modern community college students, as Dawayne, a military veteran, returned to college after his second retirement, and Kathryn received her first college degree two days before her high school graduation.

The idea to begin a college journey together was Dawayne’s brainchild as a way to encourage his daughter to start her college education early, finishing two years of college before most even get started.

“I told her, ‘hey, if you go to college, I'll go back to college,” Dawayne said. “So we made a pact about three years ago that we would do our college together then graduate at the same time. And so that's what led us to Barton.”

Kathryn was able to take the classes as dual credit, which means the curriculum counts toward her high school graduation requirements in addition to college credit. She was able to cover a lot of ground quickly because the courses only last about seven weeks. Further, the classes were covered by a scholarship offered to military service members and their families and dependents.

She said her next step is to pursue a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate in business.

Dawayne also intends to earn a bachelor’s degree in business and open a virtual reality golf business where golfers can continue to practice through the winter months.

Kathryn said she appreciates her dad’s nudge to get her started, and enjoyed helping him out with math.

“He’s pretty cool,” she said. “I know not many people have the will to go back to college.”

They said the best thing about Barton was the people. During their college pursuits, the youngest Krepel was diagnosed with stage four cancer. The patience, flexibility and understanding of the Barton faculty and staff, they said, made all the difference.

“They worked with us,” Dawayne said. “Barton is a great place to excel either as a soldier or for your kids. I’m definitely pushing Barton because of the respect and concern they showed.”

The Krepels were two of more than 50 students who chose to walk as part of the larger celebration Thursday afternoon. More than 70 students completed associate in arts, associate in science, associate in general studies and associate in applied science degrees at the Fort Riley campus in 2021-22.

Gennifer Booth will return to Junction High School as the new principal. Her hiring was contained in the personnel report approved by the Geary USD 475 Board of Education on Thursday. 

Booth is a 1998 graduate of Junction City High School and later served as a library media specialist and coach for JCHS. In recent years, she has served as an administrator in the district including one year at the Freshman Success Academy, two years at City Middle School and this past year as the principal at Washington Elementary School.

Booth said she was excited when the position opened and&nbsp; went through the process. "Just super thankful that the board, our superintendent, our associate superintendent, just have the confidence and the support behind all of them to move and transition into this wonderful and great position at the high school."

There were some difficult times at JCHS this past year school year. Booth explained the approach to address the situation is about collaborating with the team. "Really talking to the teachers, getting to know staff, students, it's all about just learning everybody there, getting the role, relationship building and just working toward our strategic goals." Booth added those are academic and social-emotional, "and really getting parent engagement."

Booth stated she bleeds blue. "I love this community, they have been supportive, they've encouraged, they just lifted me up through everything. This district has been my number one home. She attended Morris Hill and Eisenhower Elementary Schools and later City Middle School and Junction City High School as a student. "And I am just so excited to continue to be a part of the success and tradition that we look forward to at Junction City High School."

There was a change in the high school principal's position this past&nbsp; March when former principal Merrier Tartt was reassigned to another post within the district, and James Neff was named the Acting Principal.

Later in May the Board of Education voted not to renew Tartt's administrative employment contract for the 2022-2023 school year.&nbsp;

Dole Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office and VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System are inviting Veterans, military, and family members to attend Operation Veteran Connection. This will be at the National Guard Armory in Manhattan on May 19th from 1:00p.m. to 7:00p.m.&nbsp;and May 20th from 8:00 a.m .to 1:00 p.m. Subject matter experts will offer on-site one-on-one counseling on all Veteran benefits.

Operation Veteran Connection is recommended for all Veterans, active military members near their separation date, family members, and the public interested in obtaining information about state and federal Veteran benefits, and how to apply for them.

Accredited Veteran Service Representatives will be on site to assist individuals with all types of disability and pension claims. Federal VA personnel will be available to assist with applying for healthcare benefits and/or check the status of an existing claim. These professionals will also provide readjustment counseling and Veteran Readiness and Employment services.

Several state government agencies, Veteran Service Organizations, and Non-Profits will meet with Veterans to offer comprehensive assessment of education, skills, and abilities. These same agencies will provide in–depth interviewing and evaluation to identify employment barriers, discuss appropriate employment and career goals, and share information on many other state Veteran benefits.

Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring discharge paperwork (DD-214) or claim file number, marriage certificate, and available medical records to help simplify the application for benefits.

There was a small Junction City group in attendance at the Flint Hills Regional Leaders Retreat in Manhattan last week but two members of the city commission are calling for better attendance from Junction City.

Nathan Butler said Tuesday that there was a decent group from Junction City that went to the retreat. "We had one gentleman who stood up and said I've been coming for 30 years and this is the most I've ever heard spoken about Junction City at this event. " Butler added that it was a great event and he hoped that next year Junction City would have more people going to the retreat. "We need a seat at the table."

Commissioner Matthew Bea attended the retreat for the first time and noted that there was "a lot of learning and soaking up the environment. We definitely have to be more transparent or be seen at that place because there are a lot of things Manhattan is doing, and a lot of things Wamego is doing, Pottawatomie ( County ) is doing. It's all good things that we could actually piggy back off of. "

The retreat sponsored by the Chambers of Commerce in Manhattan, Wamego and Junction City is held annually.&nbsp;

The website&nbsp;lists pantries that are partner agencies of the three food banks that serve Kansas:&nbsp; Kansas Food Bank, Harvesters - The Community Food Network and Second Harvest Community Food Bank.&nbsp; In addition, pantries that are not a part of the food bank network are included along with TEFAP&nbsp;(The Emergency Food Assistance Program)&nbsp;sites –&nbsp;these are&nbsp;often referred to as government commodities supported by the USDA.&nbsp;

“The pandemic is really what set this into motion” said Brian Walker, President &amp; CEO of the Kansas Food Bank.&nbsp; “Nowhere, was there a comprehensive list of all pantries that served our state.&nbsp; The website was designed for a user-friendly experience to help neighbors facing food insecurity by connecting Kansans in need directly with helpful resources.”&nbsp;
