In the Junction City Public Works section of the City Manager's 515 report there is an update on the K-18 &amp; Karns roundabout near the Junction City High School and Junction City Middle School.

Smoky Hill has opened the roundabout to through traffic on K-18, going east and west. Access to nearby Blue Jay Way and Karns Drive are still closed. Smoky Hill is working on the grading along the roundabout and the center of the roundabout.&nbsp;

They are currently located at 138 W. 3rd Street but officials have made it clear a bigger building is needed. Debbie Johns, Director, said they want to move to more of a client based food pantry where people can select their own food, whether it be green beans or corn and according to their health needs. "Gives them a little more sense of control in what they get in their for their food."

Don Manley, with the Food Pantry, said that they are seeking a building of approximately 6,000 square feet in size. "So that we can have a waiting area and client choice in a warehouse. "

The need for more space has been evident for two years because of the growing need during the pandemic when more people have been coming to the Food Pantry each week. Manley said they will be looking for an existing building that they would have to remodel.

Julia Loper, President of the Food Pantry, said they're desperate for space. The population seeking help is growing. "Yes, yes, a lot. It's growing every week and we have new people every week coming in and registering."

Johnson stated food items needed range from peanut butter, spaghetti sauce and pasta to macaroni and cheese and roman noodles. "Last year at this time we were serving about 465 people a month, now we're up to 781."

Junction City has received their increment of Sales Tax for July, and here is where the City landed.&nbsp; According to Finance Director Lindsay Miller in the City Manager's 515 report, the amount received was $1,098,226.04. This puts the City with the 12th best month on record.&nbsp; This was the 3rd highest City Sales Tax for the month of July. It was also the 5th best County Sales Tax for July. 

It was the City's highest month for Use Tax for the month of July and the 3rd highest Use Tax for the fiscal year. With this new month, the City is no longer beating last year’s receipts, but they are only&nbsp; slightly behind ($3,287.).&nbsp;

Miller advised that keep in mind that inflation has had an effect on the City's budget. While these increased revenues are nice, they aren’t building the cash balance as fast as one might think because the City is taking the inflation hit. Back when officials&nbsp; wrote the 2022 budget, they had no idea costs would increase as much as they have. Not only have operating supply costs gone up (including heating and motor fuel,) but so have the cost of salaries. The City has several positions that are not pulling in good (or any at all) applications, and of course they are all essential positions.

Miller said remember that salaries are not what they call one and done expenses as they are “compounding.” There are additional costs that are directly affected such as retirement, social security, Medicare, and unemployment. She added that she was mainly pointing this out to show the costs do add up quickly. With the current labor market, we are definitely having to slide the starting wage up, to get good applicants in the pool. It is all about balance not just with each position but throughout the City. Miller said that they have more work to do, but that have to do it in increments to help ensure the City stays within their fiscal reach.

There will be cash awards along with trophies for the winners this year. Price noted that those cash awards will range from $50 for first place to $30 for second place and $10 for third in each of the categories.

In Float Your Boat the participants make a boat out of cardboard and duc tape only that can hold at least two people, and can be launched and paddled on a set course. Price noted that people do get extremely creative. "It's a fun, fun event." In the past participants have come the region. The event on the 20th will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and there is not any admission charge.

CVB prepares for Float Your Boat

Grub and Grooves moved to Heritage Park for that food and music activity Friday night. The event from 5-9 p.m.&nbsp; was intended to help attract people to visit downtown.

Visitors to Geary County spent $88 million in 2020 during the pandemic, increasing by 11% or nearly $9 million that year. According to information provided by the Convention &amp; Visitor's Bureau total employment supported by visitor spending registered 1,126 county jobs.

Visitors generated $9.5 million in state and local taxes in 2020. Geary County's outdoor attractions and proximity to population centers supported the spending growth in 2020.

The visitor spending of $88 million ranked Geary County 11th among all counties in Kansas, after being ranked 13th in 2019. The county had the second highest growth rate among all counties in Kansas in 2020.

Geary County grows during the pandemic

There will be special free train rides on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 2. on the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad. The excursion railroad will offer free rides on a first-come, first-served basis to passengers who come to the Rock Island Depot at 200 SE 5th in Abilene between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. that day.

Trains will be powered by the prize of the railroad's fleet of engines, the century-old Santa Fe 3415 steam locomotive.

A&amp;SV President and General Manager Ross Boelling said next Tuesday’s free trips will be shorter than the railroad’s normal two-hour round-trip excursion between Abilene and Enterprise. Instead, next Tuesday’s short rides will run from the depot to a stopping point just beyond Jeep Road. The shorter rides will last approximately 20-30 minutes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“This is our ‘inflation fighter’ special,” Boelling said, “which is being offered as a thank-you to all our fans and to introduce our railroad to prospective passengers.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

But in addition to A&amp;SV railfans, Boelling said that the August 2 trains will have some other special passengers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Journalists from across Kansas will ride on the A&amp;SV as part of the “Kansas Media Event,” a two-day convention of regional travel writers, who will meet in Abilene on August 2 and 3. Boelling said that another special feature of the trains that day will include a cattle car of Texas Longhorns that will be driven to the Rock Island depot that afternoon to symbolize Abilene’s legacy as the destination point of the Chisholm Trail in the 1800s.&nbsp;

Boelling said the railroad will offer as many of the short rides as time permits.&nbsp;

For the sixth consecutive year Konza Prairie Community Health Center hosted a Back to School Health Fair. The location was 361 Grant Ave. in Junction City.

City Commissioner Ronna Larson participated in the dunk tank. "It was a lot of fun. The kids did a great job. I was in and out a lot today." Larson called the Back to School Fair a great idea. "I loved all the different booths that were out here and all the different families that came out to participate. It's been great."

County Commissioner Alex Tyson also participated in the dunk tank, saying it's all fun and a good way to help support the community.&nbsp;

Eagle Radio / Salina Post seeks on-air news director

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent robbery in Manhattan.

Just before 2p.m. Thursday, police&nbsp;filed a report for aggravated assault and aggravated robbery in the 20 block of Waterway Place in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 17-year-old boy and a 45-year-old woman reported a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old robbed the 17-year-old victim at gunpoint of his iPhone then shot at the teen and woman in their car as they followed the suspects driving away from the scene.&nbsp; No injuries were reported.&nbsp;

Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce President / EDC Director Mickey Fornaro-Dean reported Thursday to the Chamber Board that so far 28 resumes have been received from people applying for the vacant Military Affairs Director position. More potential candidates are also considering applying.

Fornaro-Dean is hopeful a new MAC Director can be in place in September.

Other topics were covered in the board meeting at the Municipal Building.

--Eagle Communications is providing funding from the Schmidt Foundation to the Economic Development Commission to support the AUSA trip this October to Washington D.C. The funds include $10,000 remaining from 2021 and another $50,000 from the Foundation this year. The money will be used to help with digital advertising, promotional materials and follow up advertising, plus Fornaro-Dean's participation in the FABTECH Show in Atlanta in November. That is the largest metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing event in North America.

--Efforts on a possible casino night fundraiser for the Chamber membership division are under way.

--The Chamber golf tournament generated just under $10,000 in revenue.

--And Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston reminded the Board about the District's Back to School Carnival Aug. 4th from 6-8 p.m. at Blue Jay Stadium. Goals of the event include providing information to parents about back to school, and to build excitement for the upcoming school year.

MAC Director vacancy has a number of applicants

Junction City held off a ninth inning rally by the Midwest A's to win the final game of the Cowdin Cup championship series 1-0 at Rathert Field and clinch the Mid Plains League title.

Midwest had runners at second and third with two outs in the top of the ninth inning but Brigade relief pitcher Jackson Hill struck out Brevon Lee to get the third out and close out the victory. With that win before more than 400 fans at Rathert Field, Junction City came back from a one-oh deficit in the series to win it two games to one.

2022 Manhattan High School graduate Cade Perkins started and pitched seven shutout innings for the Brigade. "My plan today was to get ahead of batters and not do too much. I did pretty well. I thought I kept my pitch count low which allowed me to go seven innings."

Jackson Hill came on to pitch the eighth and ninth innings for the Brigade. On the final out Hill said he threw two sliders that didn't quite make the corner and then a slider for a strike That was followed by a fastball that was fouled off and on the final pitch, also a fastball, Hill got the third out. He then found himself at the bottom of a pile of Junction City players on the mound. "Oh yeah there was, and there was some gold water poured on us." Hill added he was at the very bottom of that happy group of players.

This is the sixth Mid League Plains title for the Junction City Brigade in their 10-year history.

 </figure>Junction City held off a ninth inning rally by the Midwest A's to win the final game of the Cowdin Cup championship series 1-0 at Rathert Field and clinch the Mid Plains League title.Midwest had runners at second and third with two outs in the top of the ninth inning but Brigade relief pitcher Jackson Hill struck out Brevon Lee to get the third out and close out the victory. With that win before more than 400 fans at Rathert Field, Junction City came back from a one-oh deficit in the series to win it two games to one.<figure>

 </figure>2022 Manhattan High School graduate Cade Perkins started and pitched seven shutout innings for the Brigade. "My plan today was to get ahead of batters and not do too much. I did pretty well. I thought I kept my pitch count low which allowed me to go seven innings."Jackson Hill came on to pitch the eighth and ninth innings for the Brigade. On the final out Hill said he threw two sliders that didn't quite make the corner and then a slider for a strike That was followed by a fastball that was fouled off and on the final pitch, also a fastball, Hill got the third out. He then found himself at the bottom of a pile of Junction City players on the mound. "Oh yeah there was, and there was some gold water poured on us." Hill added he was at the very bottom of that happy group of players.This is the sixth Mid League Plains title for the Junction City Brigade in their 10-year history.

Reilani Perez was awarded a gift card for $1,500 from the Exchange as part of their 'You Made the Grade' rewards program.

Military children in grades 1 through 12, from across the globe, could enter their name into the drawing, if they maintained a 'B' average or higher on their report card.

Reilani and her family arrived at Fort Riley in early July and recently learned she'd been selected as the second prize winner.

The Perez family recently PCS'd to Fort Riley, where Reilani's dad, Chief Warrant Officer 3, Aladino Perez has been stationed, they moved here from U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys.

Reilani says she will share part of her winnings with her family who have supported her and her education. She also plans to buy something for herself, but has yet to decide what that is.

August is the time for the JCPD Summer Block Party

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just 4p.m. Wednesday in Manhattan.

&nbsp;According to the Riley Police Department activity report, a 2013 GMC Terrain driven by David O'Quinn, 67,&nbsp; Manhattan, made a left turn off of Casement Road onto Hayes Drive.&nbsp; The SUV hopped a curb, traveled through grass and struck a 2016 Nissan Altima driven by Alexis Winter, 19, of Manhattan, who was waiting to make a left turn off of Hayes Drive.

The impact caused the Altima to strike a 2021 Ford Econoline driven by Roxanne Harper, 30, of Manhattan.

Investigators determined O'Quinn had experienced a medical emergency while driving which caused the SUV crash. EMS&nbsp; transported him to Via Christi for a head injury and treatment of the medical emergency.&nbsp; The RCPD reported no other injuries.

Manhattan man hospitalized after 3-vehicle crash

Junction City Fire Chief Jason Lankas issued a statement Thursday on the Wednesday evening fire on W. 7th Street.

JCFD responded to residential working fire at 516 W 7th St. on July 27 at 7:25 p.m. Dispatch advised that a suicidal subject that was going to shoot anyone who walked through the door and himself. It was unknown if any other subject in the residence. 

O/A saw smoke coming from the eves of the structure from the1st and 2nd floor. . Fire crews entered the first floor for fire control, with a second crew assigned to second floor to check for fire and ventilation. There was a single fatality found on first floor, code black. Once confirmed code black the Kansas State Fire Marshal's office was called. 

KSFM took over investigations once on scene and an engine crew remained on scene to assist with fire extinguishment and overhaul. No first responder injuries were reported. 

Multiple agencies were involved to help assist with this scene. The Junction City Fire Department thanked the JCPD, GESO, GEFD, and Topeka Fire Investigator with Benny their accelerant detection canine, along with KSFM for helping with this investigation.

Fire crews were called out to the 500 block of 7th Street to the report of a structure fire.

Crews arriving on the scene located found a structure on fire and a man at the residence threatening first responders.

The fire has been extinguished and upon initial search of the structure crews found one male deceased.&nbsp;

Crews from Junction City Fire, Geary County Rural Fire, Junction City Police Department, Geary County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene. Kansas Fire Marshal has arrived on scene to assist with the investigation.&nbsp; The street will remain closed as the investigation is completed.

Kenagy said Stormont Vail will bring their best effort to turn GCH into a stable entity, and grow and provide healthcare long term. "We are very pleased and grateful for the opportunity to be here. Our team is energized in a very positive way, and in part because of the reception we've had here. The team here at Geary Community Hospital has been very welcoming and very eager to become acquainted and become a part of a singular team that can continue to provide healthcare services in this region."

Kenagy added that GCH will get the best of Stormont Vail's energy in this endeavor. He was in Junction City this week where he attended the Geary Community Hospital Board of Trustees meeting.

Live Well Geary County has announced that Juncton City and Geary County Commissioners have signed resolutions to adopt the Geary County Food System Plan.

Live Well Geary County Food Policy Council initiated the process of creating a food system plan for the local area in 2021. To support the residents of the County, the food system plan elaborated action steps to achieve the following goals:

- All residents have equal access to healthy, local food and food insecurity is reduced.

- Farmers, food entrepreneurs, and food chain workers thrive in our local economy

- All residents have equal opportunities for food and agriculture education

- Build and design our communities to ensure that making the healthy choice is the easy choice

This plan will serve as a guiding document for the next ten years (2022–2032). It will help guide community policies and programs that will build a more resilient food system. To view the document or learn more information, visit https://www.livewellgearycounty.org/food- policy-council.

Geary County Food System Plan Approved by City and County

Rathert Field will be the site for the final game of the Cowdin Cup playoffs Thursday at 7 p.m. The Junction City Brigade will host the Midwest A's with their best two-out-of-three championship series tied at one-win apiece.

Midwest defeated Junction City 8-5 in game one in a contest that had been started in Junction City Tuesday night but was suspended in the 8th inning due to rain. The remainder of the game was played in Kansas City, Missouri Wednesday night. Then there was a full nine-inning contest won by the Brigade 5-4. With the A's having the potential tying run at third&nbsp; base, Junction City pitcher Boston Dowd struck out P.J. Alvarez for the final out in the ninth inning to clinch the win for the Brigade.

Junction City General Manager Cecil Aska is hoping for a big crowd at Rathert Field Thursday evening. "I would love it if we could get a thousand, but I would be happy if five or six hundred people show up. It's going to be a good game. I think it's going to be a great atmosphere."

Aska said admission prices for the ballgame will be reduced to $3 for adults and $1 for children. Kids 5 and under will be admitted free.

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a hit-and-run accident and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 7:30p.m. Saturday, police in Wichita arrested 25-year old Hunter Lee Gilbert on a warrant out of Manhattan, according to the Sedgwick County booking report.

The warrant is in connection to a January 24, 2022 hit-and-run crash, where Gilbert allegedly rear-ended two vehicles at the intersection of Fort Riley Boulevard and Richards Drive and and left the scene.

In Wichita, police also arrested Gilbert for alleged interference with law enforcement, falsely reporting a crime and possession of a controlled substance.

In Riley County, he faces requested charges that include "Duty of driver to report accident with an unattended vehicle/property; 1st conv; Vehicle liability insurance; Liability coverage required; Vehicles; Unlawful Acts; e.g., registration; Improper driving on laned roadway; Ignition interlock device; Tamper to render it inaccurate or inoperative and a probation violation, according to the Riley County Police Department arrest report. He no longer in custody.

Geary USD 475 has announced via social media that the first day of school for all new students in any grade and returning students in grades 1-5, 6 and nine will be a half-day on Aug. 16. Returning students in other grades including 7,8,10, 11 and 12 begin school with a full day on Aug. 17.&nbsp;

Early Childhood and Kindergarten students begin with a full day on Aug.19. Meals will not be served on Aug. 16.

Donna Porter, Assistant Director of the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library (DBPL), told the JC Breakfast Optimists on Wednesday that “in 2005 until now the staff has digitally archived the local newspapers from 1861-2021. The DBPL also has almost all the yearbooks from Junction City High and St. Xavier’s High Schools.”

During her presentation, Donna shared a power point procedure for doing online research in the local newspapers and told club members that “we are excited to help anyone on a one-on-one basis to learn how to do the research on topics of interest. We also help many military families learn about our community prior to their moving here”, she said. She also provided a handout with step-by-step instructions on researching the print archives. Assistance can be obtained by calling the library at 785-238-4311 or by making a personal visit to the library at 230 W. 7th Street in Junction City.

The Dorothy Bramlage Public Library was first opened in 1983. Prior to that date the George Smith Public Library was built in 1907 and opened in 1908. That building is located at the corner of Seventh and Washington Street and is now the George Smith Reception Hall.
