Junction City Commissioners have accepted a bid totaling $439,451.85 from J &amp; K Contracting LC for improvements to the Ash &amp; Eisenhower Drive&nbsp; intersection on the south side of the city.

Ray Ibarra, Junction City Public Works Director, said the project will consist of removing the asphalt intersection and making it concrete, "construction of sidewalks, ramps and crosswalks. "J &amp; K Contracting L.C. submitted the low bid on the project.&nbsp;

City Commissioners on Tuesday night also approved the temporary and permanent easements needed for construction of a 10-foot bike / pedestrian trail from Spring Valley Road to the new roundabout being constructed on K-18 on the west side of the city.

Geary County Emergency Management posted a statement via social media concerning the decision to sound the emergency warning sirens in Junction City Tuesday evening during the storm.

The funnel cloud was still observed by spotters as it went over Junction City. Our main concern was to make sure everyone was safe in the event that the funnel gathered strength and became a tornado.&nbsp;"

Heavy thunderstorm activity rolled through Geary and Riley Counties and then on farther south and east Tuesday evening. There were reports of hail in Junction City, with emergency management noting there were reports of quarter to half dollar size hail in the McFarland Road area.

Tornado warning sirens were sounded in Geary County after officials in both Dickinson and Geary County confirmed the sighting of funnel clouds. No major damage or injuries were reported.

The large storm system hovered over Geary and Riley counties for most of two hours.

The National Weather Service said flash flooding four feet deep was occurring over Kitten Road near Keats.&nbsp; A flash flood warning was issued for northwest Geary County and southwest Riley County. Other flash flood warnings followed for portions of Morris, Geary, Dickinson and Riley counties.

Thunderstorms sweep through the region

RILEY COUNTY—Three Kansas teens were injured in an accident just after 11:30a.m. Tuesday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Reece W. Carson, 17, Manhattan, was eastbound on U.S. 24 three miles north of Manhattan. The driver attempted a left turn onto Kansas 13. 

The driver failed to yield to the right of way to a westbound 2013 Ram 2500 driven by Brandon D&nbsp;Bussen, 34, Wamego.&nbsp;

The vehicles collided and came to rest on the north shoulder U.S. 24.

EMS transported Carson and one passenger in the Jeep Wyatt H. Henton, 18, Manhattan, to Via Christi. EMS transported a second passenger identified as Micah B. Ugo, 16, Manhattan, to Children's Mercy. Bussen was not injured. The occupants of the Jeep were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Junction City, Manhattan and Ogden could benefit from a $500,000 grant by the Environmental Protection Agency to the Flint Hills Regional Council.&nbsp; The money is part of the $254.5 million in Brownfield grants for 265 selected communities across the nation.

The Flint Hills Regional Council was selected for community-wide assessment work and the development of reuse plans for Junction City, Manhattan and Ogden. Priority assessment sites within those cities include: Junction City’s Historic Downtown along the Republican River; East and Central Core Districts in Manhattan; and the Riley Avenue Revitalization area in Ogden.&nbsp;

Brownfield projects can range from cleaning up buildings with asbestos or lead contamination to assessing and cleaning up abandoned properties that once managed dangerous chemicals. Once cleaned up, former brownfield properties can be redeveloped into productive uses, such as grocery stores, affordable housing, health centers, museums, parks, and solar farms.&nbsp;

CHASE COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Chase County Sheriff’s Office announced that a Milford man was arrested connected to a shooting that occurred along Kansas Highway 150 in Chase County.

Just after 11a.m. Tuesday, officers from the Emporia Police Department arrested Eric J. McClure, 38, of Milford, after being released from Newman Regional Health in Emporia, according to the KBI.

McClure was arrested on requested charges of aggravated battery, three counts of aggravated assault, felon in possession of a firearm, and circumvention of an ignition interlock device. 

The charges allege he shot at an SUV on Highway 150 on the morning of Friday, May 13, injuring a 33-year-old man from Emporia, and placing three other men in the vehicle at risk.

Following the arrest, McClure was booked into the Lyon County Jail.&nbsp;

Raise the Roof Fitness Fair is coming to the Geary County Historical Museum on Saturday. This event will assist with fundraising for a needed new roof on the Museum.

The first class starts at 10am with Yoga and a different class will be held every hour. Classes are being offered by Sierra Fox and Wild Sukha, The Upper Deck, Elite Academy of Martial Arts, K.O. Boxing, Ballroom Dance School Manhattan, JC GymTastics, Clarabel’s and Brianna Downey. &nbsp;

There will be hourly raffle with prizes from: Magnolia’s, Rolling Meadows Golf Course, JC GymTastics, Ballroom Dance School MHK and Nutrition Fort! MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Grocery shopping is something everyone has to do, but there are many ways to get the job done. Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee says a few sensible ideas can help consumers save money on their grocery bill. &nbsp;

“Shop your pantry, refrigerator and freezer before you go to the store,” Blakeslee said. “Then make a list of needed items; or even better, make a weekly meal plan and stick to it.”&nbsp;

Then, Blakeslee says, grab a snack before hitting the aisles. &nbsp;

“Don’t shop on an empty stomach,” she said. “That tempts you to make impulse buys and can add to your bill.”&nbsp;

Another money-saving idea: buy alternatives to the brand names. Blakeslee said store brands often taste just as good, or they have premium products that are very similar to the name brand items. &nbsp;

“Have you ever tried a blind taste test to compare?” Blakeslee said. “You may find your family will not even notice a difference.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee said reducing food waste will also eventually save money on groceries. Some tips include:&nbsp;

“Shop alone and stay focused,” Blakeslee said. “Include others in creating the shopping list, help them make choices, and help them learn about costs to become better shoppers.”&nbsp;

K-State expert shares tips to reduce grocery bills 

Geary County has been chosen to receive $34,814 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The selection was made by a national board charged with distribution of funds appropriated by congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.&nbsp;

There will be a local board comprised of representatives from the county commission, Red Cross, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, United Way and others that will determine how the money awarded to Geary County will be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area.&nbsp;

Geary County has previously distributed emergency food and shelter funds with organizations such as the Food Pantry, churches, Salvation Army and the participating shelter.

Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for funds must contact Nichole Mader at United Way at director@unitedwayjcgc.org, 785-238-2117 for an application. The deadline for applications to be received is Wednesday, June 15th.

The selection was made by a national board charged with distribution of funds appropriated by congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.&nbsp;There will be a local board comprised of representatives from the county commission, Red Cross, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, United Way and others that will determine how the money awarded to Geary County will be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area.&nbsp;Geary County has previously distributed emergency food and shelter funds with organizations such as the Food Pantry, churches, Salvation Army and the participating shelter.Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for funds must contact Nichole Mader at United Way at director@unitedwayjcgc.org, 785-238-2117 for an application. The deadline for applications to be received is Wednesday, June 15th.

Year two working with a Pathways to a Healthy Kansas Grant has been one of progress for the Live Well Geary County organization.&nbsp;

Susan Jagerson, Live Well Executive Director, noted that they received a grant from Pathways to create a food system plan with work on the overall food system for the county. That plan will be taken to city and county leaders to be considered for adoption. "It has some really good recommendations and actions that we can take to improve our overall food system in the county."

Geary County is one of the highest food insecurity counties in the state, but Jagerson added that numbers have decreased a bit.&nbsp;

Other year two accomplishments include help for UPU Industries with a work site wellness grant to create a healthier workplace environment for their employees, help with the City on a 7th Street Bike Boulevard project, worked with the Food Pantry to get a Pathways grant and created a senior communal meals program at the Larry Dixon Center. Approximately 100 meals a week are being provided to seniors.

Also the Farmer's Markets are continued on Thursdays from May through October.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A federal judge delivered a mixed ruling last week in a Geary County case over policies regarding trans students.

Fort Riley Middle School teacher Pamela Ricard<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2022/03/10/kansas-teacher-sues-district-over-preferred-pronouns-policy/" target="_blank">&nbsp;sued USD 475</a>&nbsp;over policies requiring her to refer to students by their preferred pronouns and names and restricting her from revealing those preferred titles to a student’s parents.

U.S. District Court Judge Holly Teeter sided with the district in requiring teachers to use the pronouns students wish to be called by. But, she did grant an injunction prohibiting the district from punishing Ricard if she uses those pronouns with parents. Ricard told the court she would only do so if it came up within the context of her regular interactions, not purely to out a student to their family.

The injunction runs through the remainder of Ricard’s contract with the district.

Geary County Commissioners took action Monday to authorize a $500,000 allotment to support Geary Community Hospital. This is part of the county's earlier commitment to fund up to $3.5 million in American Recovery Program Act money to help the financially challenged hospital.&nbsp;

--There are plans to renovate the human resource / finance office at the county office building with a new wall, but no bids were received for the project. County Public Works will do the work in-house.

--Amanda Ravenstein has been named the new Marketing Specialist for the Geary County Convention &amp; Visitor's Bureau. CVB Direcctor Donna Price moved Ravenstein into the marketing specialist position from the administrative assistant job.

U.S. Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall have released a list of 23 U.S. Department of Transportation grants to make repairs and upgrades to Kansas airports.&nbsp; The list includes $600,000 for Freeman Field, the airport in Junction City.&nbsp;

Ray Ibarra, Junction City Public Works Director, said the funds are in an obstruction grant applied for by the City. Obstruction lighting will be added on the lights at nearby Rathert Field, on the animal control building and on a fence on the west side of the airport. "The other phase of it is to bury some ( a portion ) overhead power lines on the north end of the runway. There is also power line replacement on the south side of the airport along 14th Street to bury a line.&nbsp;

The list of grant recipients also includes the Herington Regional Airport, which will receive $270,000.

Geary County Landfill will be open to the public from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday. The only items that will be accepted are brush, tree limbs and trees. This is part of the spring cleanup.

One of the&nbsp; founders of Grandview Plaza, Gerald Henry "Jerry" Bielefeld, 95,&nbsp; has died. According to his sister, Mary Sanders, Bielefeld founded the city of Grandview Plaza which was incorporated in 1963,&nbsp; along with William Marth, C.C. Witt and W.O. Homer. "He was very proud of it. Yes, he was very instrumental in a lot of the things that the city accomplished."

Sanders noted that Bielefeld served as the mayor of Grandview Plaza for five terms, for nearly 20 years, before retiring.&nbsp;

Visitation has been set for Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Johnson Cremations, Funerals &amp; Receptions, 203 North Washington.&nbsp; There will be a service at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 630 S. Eisenhower in Junction City. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery.

Former Grandview Plaza mayor passes away

Kim Baldwin, McPherson County farmer and rancher It’s beginning to feel and look a lot more like summer is quickly nearing! The kids have wrapped up their school year, the alfalfa is about to bloom, the cows have come home to graze, and the wheat is waving in the warm Kansas winds.&nbsp; After a week of cool rainy days, it’s as if Mother Nature has decided it’s time to contemplate beginning a new season. The days are warmer. The sun is shining brighter. The crops are growing rapidly. Before long there should be first cuttings of alfalfa in fields. The alfalfa’s tiny purple blossoms are beginning to show themselves hinting that it’s getting closer to begin making hay.&nbsp; While driving to town to pick up my kids from their last day of school, the bright blue sky was dotted with planes swooping down to spray fields. The colorful airplanes flying low and running patterns back and forth over fields is a sight I see almost every year around this time.&nbsp; From my porch, the distant buzz of an airplane suggesting a quick descent followed by a plane emerging above tree rows is something that still catches my attention. I can’t help but stop what I’m doing to watch these planes dance through the sky for a few moments before I refocus on my current task. The cattle have returned to the pasture just south of our house to begin their summer grazing. It’s always a happy day when I can look out my kitchen window in the morning and see fat cattle grazing along the creek. The sight and sound of cattle switching their tails and taking slow steps while grazing on lush grass allows me to briefly calm my mind and appreciate a simple moment during this part of the year. In recent afternoons I have caught myself briefly looking out into the wheat fields to soak in the view. The wheat has definitely grown and with the combination of the height of the plants and the continuous wind, it has begun to collectively wave daily. The synchronized movement of green is mesmerizing like ocean waves and is both soothing to watch while also reminding me that the green wheat before me will soon ripen to its golden harvest-ready beauty. Soon we will enter our busy season of summer, but for now, I’ll appreciate moments within these days knowing that summer is definitely in sight!

Summer in Sight

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged assault in Manhattan.

Just after 10a.m. Saturday, officers filed a report for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and felony interference with a law enforcement officer in the 400 block of South 5th Street in Manhattan,&nbsp;according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. An RCPD officer was listed as the victim. 

Officers arrested 43-year-old Joseph Stepney of Manhattan in connection with the incident.

 Stepney was issued a total bond of $14,000 and remains in custody, according to the RCPD.&nbsp;

Stepney has a previous first-degree sexual abuse conviction in Alabama, according the KBI Offender Registry. In January, police in Manhattan arrested him for a violation of the offender registration act, according to RCPD booking records.

The City of Manhattan reported an unknown suspect damaged a barricade on top of a parking garage. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $700. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

A 2015 Cadillac SRX driven by Tatum Couture, 45, of Belleville, Kansas, and a red Ford F150 driven by Rex Dettmer, 48, of Riley, collided at the intersection of Tuttle Creek Blvd and Madison Road, according to Monday's Riley County Police Department Activity report.

The RCPD indicated Couture failed to yield while turning left. EMS transported Dettmer to Via Christi for treatment of his injuries. Police issued Couture a citation for failure to yield.

Riley man hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash

Junction City High School graduates in the class of 2022 went through a lot.&nbsp; That was one message delivered by senior Jada Nabus during her speech at commencement Sunday. "We were the last class to attend the Freshman Success Academy, and school getting cancelled after spring break of our sophomore year due to COVID leading to&nbsp; the longest summer ever. " Nabus mentioned other challenges including online school and Zoom classes plus going to school in masks. "New principals and admin, starting our senior year two weeks late, extended school days due to late start and too many snow days and more."

Nabus said along with obstacles comes opportunity. "Because of what we've been through we're going to be difference makers."

Jay Diestelkamp, Senior Class President, referred to the challenging times&nbsp; faced by the class but said those days are behind them He talked about what comes next, focusing on the need to strive as their mission in life. "As humans we get a unique experience from all other living things on our planet. We get the choice to thrive."

Diestelkamp said we control our lives and point them in the direction that we think suits us best. "We live to build connections, have experiences, and accomplish our dreams. To thrive we must follow our dreams."

The class of 2022 started a new annual commencement tradition, that will include having a book that will be signed by all of the graduates.

Names of 282 graduates were listed in the program at commencement.&nbsp;

 </figure>By Dewey TerrillJC PostJunction City High School graduates in the class of 2022 went through a lot.&nbsp; That was one message delivered by senior Jada Nabus during her speech at commencement Sunday. "We were the last class to attend the Freshman Success Academy, and school getting cancelled after spring break of our sophomore year due to COVID leading to&nbsp; the longest summer ever. " Nabus mentioned other challenges including online school and Zoom classes plus going to school in masks. "New principals and admin, starting our senior year two weeks late, extended school days due to late start and too many snow days and more."Nabus said along with obstacles comes opportunity. "Because of what we've been through we're going to be difference makers."<figure>

 </figure>Jay Diestelkamp, Senior Class President, referred to the challenging times&nbsp; faced by the class but said those days are behind them He talked about what comes next, focusing on the need to strive as their mission in life. "As humans we get a unique experience from all other living things on our planet. We get the choice to thrive."Diestelkamp said we control our lives and point them in the direction that we think suits us best. "We live to build connections, have experiences, and accomplish our dreams. To thrive we must follow our dreams."<figure>
