There used to be a large tree in front of the building at 222 West 6th Street housing the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce, Geary County Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau and other organizations including 107.9 FM and 1420 KJCK AM. That is no longer the case after a brief but intense thunderstorm that swept through Junction City Sunday morning.

No one was injured, but Geary County Emergency Management Director Garry Berges said there were trees and limbs down with the major area being from about Jefferson Street west to Jackson Street and between about 5th Street to 10th Street. "One tree over at 8th and Adams, looks like when it broke, the big limb fell against a house. That's most of our damage that we had."

Berges said authorities don't know if there was a downburst of wind or just a storm that intensified enough. Some small hail accompanied the storm which moved off to the south and east.&nbsp;

Storm produces tree damage in central Junction City

MANHATTAN — Storm season can be stressful for many reasons, but for Kansas gardeners, protecting their plants is a priority.&nbsp;

With Kansas’ storm season in full swing, Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham has tips on how to protect and recover gardens from severe weather damage.&nbsp;

“We are entering storm season and various areas of the state will likely have high winds, excessive rainfall and hail,” Upham said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The force of rainfall pounding on the soil can result in a thick crust that prevents seed emergence and partially blocks oxygen from reaching roots,” Upham said. Correcting this issue is as easy as lightly scraping the soil surface after is has dried. Upham cautions deep tiling as it could damage young, tender roots.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Standing water cuts off oxygen to the roots, which can result in plant damage if it doesn’t drain quickly enough,” he said. Plants can sometimes handle 24 hours of standing water, but hot weather following the rainfall can cause the water to become hot enough to ‘cook’ the plants.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“There isn’t much that can be done about this unless a channel can be cut to allow the water to drain,” Upham said.&nbsp;

Hail damaged plants should recover quickly as long as only the leaves were damaged. If stems and fruit were damaged the situation may become more serious. “The plant can recover from a few bruises, but if it looks like the plants were mowed down by a weed whip, replanting is in order,” Upham said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Either wind or water can cause plants to lean,” Upham said “They should start to straighten after a few days.” He does not recommend trying to bend them back as the plants often break easily.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Upham and his colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly Horticulture Newsletter with tips for maintaining home landscapes. The newsletter is&nbsp;available to view online&nbsp;or can be delivered by email each week.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;Second floor renovation project for the Flint Hills Discovery Center

At 10 a.m. May 27, the Flint Hills Discovery Center will celebrate the grand opening of Prairie Playscape, a complete renovation of the second-floor children’s area. This new exhibit fulfills the original vision of the Discovery Center to enhance the connection of children to the Flint Hills.

The FHDC Foundation has been working towards this renovation since 2019. With more than 60 individual donors, grants, and foundations, and a fundraising goal of $1.5 million, Prairie Playscape is the single largest project to date for the Foundation. No taxpayer money was used.

Prairie Playscape is an interactive, hands-on exhibit for kids. It features three themed areas – exploring the land, working the land, and sharing the land – where children can learn about the Kansas Flint Hills. With 13 new interactive stations, Prairie Playscape will provide endless entertainment and education for children of all ages.

Flint Hills Discovery Center Prairie Playscape grand opening scheduled

The Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel awarded three scholarships at their meeting Friday at the Zion United Church of Christ. Elijah Evans, a senior at Junction City High School, was awarded the JCARSP Scholarship for $500.00. He will be majoring in Exercise Science and minoring in Coaching Education at Bethany College. Madison Cynova is also a senior at JCHS and received the Grace Burkhead Memorial Scholarship for $500.00. She will attend Kansas State University with a major in Interior Design. Makayla Powell is a JCHS graduate and is in her senior year of college. She is majoring in Elementary Education. Makayla was awarded the Harley and Elsie Blanka Scholarship for $1,000.

Retired School Personnel present scholarships to JCHS students

Volunteers spent time Saturday picking up trash in the East Chestnut Street area of Junction City. Phyllis Fitzgerald explained that it was a monthly cleanup project that she coordinates. "Sixteen volunteers showed up including Soldiers from the Sgt. Audie Murphy Club. I had the 1st Sgt. from Charley Company 541st Maintenance, Sgt. Maj. from G-4 HBBN of the Division, some 116th Infantry 1st Brigade Soldiers." There was also a representative from Fort Riley Veterinary Services and members of the Sustainment Brigade.

In addition children also participated in the effort including 3rd, 7th, 8th and 11th grade students plus a post-high school team that is waiting to join the military.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The volunteers received a compliment from a truck driver. "All the places that the trucker has traveled she advised she'd never seen anyone in any community out doing what we're doing today. She thanked us all for that," said Fitzgerald.

East Chestnut Street is one of the main entrances to Junction City off of Interstate 70.

" Doors for the graduates will open at 11 p.m. and all who are attending the event need to be in by 11:30 p.m.

Wiegand said the event will run until about 2:30 a.m. following activities. "Volleyball, basketball, cornhole. We've got some high energy teachers that are going to be helping us put together some activities. "&nbsp;

Community donations help support the event, "So we'll be providing more of a breakfast type meal for our graduates along with some gift cards and other prizes that have been donated, "said Weigand. This will be the first Project Graduation at JCHS since 2018.

Project Graduation returns to Junction City High School

Geary County Sheriff's Department authorities have recovered the remains of a man last seen swimming to shore in Milford Lake on April 30.

With help from Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Parks Division, members of the Geary County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit and Sheriff's Office / Junction City Fire Department dive team recovered&nbsp; the remains of Jesse Paul Sockness, 41, of Lawrence. The recovery occurred after boaters saw his body floating in the water about 300 yards north of where Sockness was suspected of entering the water. The location was in the Curtis Creek area on the west side of Milford Lake.

Deputies had responded to Eagle Ridge Campground in Milford State Park at 3:29 p.m. on April 30 for a woman who had drifted into shoreline in a homemade water vessel.&nbsp;

According to the Sheriff's Department, the woman said at that time that she and a man ( Sockness ) were walking the shoreline near Curtis Creek when they located a water vessel made from 55 gallon drums and 2x4 lumber. The couple entered the water in the vessel when they were caught by the wind and were being pulled toward the main body of the lake. The man jumped into the water to swim to shore to call for help. He was last seen in the water as the woman drifted away in the vessel.

The incident is being investigated as an accidental drowning, pending autopsy results.

Authorities locate remains of a drowning victim at Milford Lake

CHASE COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Chase County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) are investigating shooting that occurred early Friday morning along Kansas Highway 150 in Chase County, according to a media release from the agency.

Just 6:15 a.m., the Chase County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a man reporting that a passenger in their vehicle had been shot. Deputies from the Chase County Sheriff’s Office and KHP troopers responded to mile marker 13 on Highway 150. 

Upon arrival they found a 33-year-old man, from Emporia, suffering from a gunshot wound to his right hip. EMS transported the victim to an Emporia hospital.

KBI agents responded to the scene. After conducting a preliminary investigation it appears that four men were carpooling to work from Emporia, heading west toward McPherson in a grey 2015 Nissan Murano. 

As the SUV’s driver passed a black 2015 Ford Explorer, that appeared broke down on the side of the road, the occupants in the Murano heard loud bangs. Then the rear right passenger realized that he had been shot.

When law enforcement officers examined the Ford Explorer it was unoccupied, so they began searching the pasture areas around the highway. After searching for a while, they found a 38-year-old male suspect, from Milford, Kansas, lying face down and unconscious in a creek. They administered naloxone which revived him. He was then transported to the hospital in Emporia.

Authorities conducted an extensive search of the scene and located a handgun in the water, not far from where the suspect was discovered.

The man who was shot was treated for his injuries and has been released from the hospital. The suspect remains hospitalized. It is not believed that the two men had any prior contact.

Letter carriers nationwide, including in Junction City, will conduct their annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday. They will be collecting donations that residents have left near their mailboxes.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A Manhattan woman died in an accident just after 8:30a.m. Friday in Pottawatomie County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Chevy Malibu driven by&nbsp; Abby&nbsp;Stous, 38, Manhattan, was northbound on Flush Road two miles west of St. George.

The driver failed to yield at the stop sign at U.S. 24. An eastbound 2007 International truck driven by&nbsp;Duncan, Micheal Lynn Duncan, 55, Westmoreland, struck the Chevy on the driver's side.

Stous was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. A private vehicle transported Duncan to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The Ford crossed into the westbound lane and struck a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Rebecca Slack, 58, of Manhattan head-on.

Slack was life-flighted to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of lower extremity injuries. Curry and a passenger of the Equinox, Mark Danford, 57, of Manhattan, were transported to Via Christi for treatment of their injuries.

The RCPD released no additional details early Friday.

Sandy Johnson, a K-State Research and Extension beef specialist in Colby, said drought is not a new issue to cow-calf producers in Kansas, but the combination of a cool, dry spring, increased days of high wind and low humidity on top of the global economic impacts of a war and pandemic, make this year unique.&nbsp;

The extended outlook indicates drought will persist in a good portion of the western United States, including western Kansas.&nbsp;

“Producers are faced with challenging decisions since harvested feed supplies are depleted or gone and the outlook for pasture production is well below normal in much of the state. Record high prices for many production inputs are another factor,” Johnson said.&nbsp;

The webinar will include a town hall format to address audience questions. In addition to beef specialists, agricultural economists and other subject matter specialists will be available during the session.&nbsp;

Saint Francis Xavier High School graduation will be held Saturday, May 21st, at 2:00 p.m. in the Saint Xavier Catholic Church. The speaker will be 7-12 Theology teacher Dan Culbertson. There will be three graduates, Jacob Copas, Clarissa Okara, and Lauryn Peterson. 

Lauryn Peterson will be the Valedictorian and Clarissa Okara will be the and Salutatorian.&nbsp;

Some of the scholarships and awards that will be presented at graduation include the Bramlage Family Foundation Scholarship, St. Francis Xavier Parish Foundation Scholarship, the&nbsp;Pioneer Award and the Kansas Scholars Curriculum Completer&nbsp; &nbsp;

 Salina Diocese Superintendent Geoff Andrews will also be in attendance.

Plans also include a tailgate party for a Chiefs away game. The date will be announced when the 2022 schedule is released.&nbsp;

There will be another step forward on the new public library effort

There have been two filings for the 68th District seat in the Kansas Houses of Representatives.&nbsp;

Nathan Butler, Junction City, notified JC Post of his decision to run&nbsp; for the seat. Butler is currently a member of the Junction City Commission and is a former USD 475 school board member.

According to the Secretary of State's Office, John Seibel, Burdick, has also filed for election to the seat. Both Seibel and Butler filed as Republicans.

The 68th District includes a portion of Junction City. The primary election would occur in August and the general election in November.

Underclass awards are presented at JCHS

(Riley County, KS - May 12, 2022) The Riley County Health Department (RCHD) reports that six cases of Chickenpox (Varicella) have been identified in Riley County over the past two weeks. The six patients range in age from 6 to 14 years of age. Chickenpox was last seen in Riley County in 2020, when a single case was identified in a 16-year-old person returning from international travel.&nbsp; Chickenpox is a disease that causes an itchy rash of blisters and a fever. It is highly contagious and spreads mainly when a person touches or breathes in the virus particles. Anyone who has not had the chickenpox or received the varicella vaccine can get the disease. Some individuals who have been vaccinated against chickenpox can still get the disease. However, they usually have milder symptoms. Chickenpox illness usually lasts about 4 to 7 days. Be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of chickenpox, including:

Demolition of the former Junction City High School began with the Deever Building portion of the complex. That structure served as the school district's administration building for many years before being incorporated into the high school operation.

David Wild, USD 475 Chief Operations Officer, said the work will continue from the south to the west on the demolition site. "Just to let the public know, we'll be salvaging some bricks from the old high school and giving them to the Geary Community Schools Foundation for resale." Wild added that there have been many requests for bricks from the old school.

Demolition of the former JCHS is projected&nbsp; to be completed in August, and possibly earlier. Ark Demolition of Tulsa, OK is handling the project. They are a subcontractor of Hutton Construction.&nbsp;

The concrete grandstand for the Al Simpler Stadium at the old JCHS site will be torn down but the turf for the football field and the adjacent running track will be left in place. The tennis courts on the west side of the complex and two small classroom buildings near the west side of the former school building will remain. Cost estimate for the demolition is $2.7 million.

The plan is to return the property to grade and then sell it to the city so a future sports complex can be developed there, along with a possible new public library.

Man in Colo. prison accused of aggravated kidnapping in Manhattan

For nearly six months there has not been a Wendy's Restaurant in Junction City because a new outlet was under construction at 440 West 6th Street. That project is complete and Wednesday was opening day.

Ashley Bryant with the new establishment, said cars were wrapped down 6th Street and around 7th Street with people wanting to visit the new restaurant.

By Dewey TerrillJC PostFor nearly six months there has not been a Wendy's Restaurant in Junction City because a new outlet was under construction at 440 West 6th Street. That project is complete and Wednesday was opening day.<figure>

New Wendy's Restaurant opens on West 6th Street

If you were fortunate to attend the Student-Athlete Signing Day celebration at Junction City High School you had an opportunity to cheer on the Blue Jays and Lady Jays that signed letters of intent to compete in sports at the collegiate level. There were also photo opportunities with the athletes and their families, and you got to partake in the cupcakes with blue icing!

Eighteen JCHS athletes have signed letters of intent.

JCHS student athletes celebrate signing day in a sweet way

Members of the class of 2022 at Junction City High School received at least $1.2 million in scholarships. Assistant Principal Steve Green made that statement at the conclusion of the Senior Night Awards assembly at JCHS.

He also announced the $1,000 Bonecutter-Geary Community Schools Foundation scholarship for the class valedictorian. "And it's my honor to present that to Ryan Pham."

Pham will be the valedictorian in the first JCHS class to graduate from the new high school building. "It means a lot to me because it kind of proves all of my hard work really went somewhere, and I'm glad that I could be representing this class."

Pham hopes to major in biochemistry and become an orthodontist in the future.

Katrina Muller was named the Salutatorian for the Class of 2022. "It's honestly insane for me because I thought I had lost salutatorian. I thought that I was now third in my class, so it was honestly a shock to even have it in the first place, so just really excited about it."&nbsp; Her future plans include working toward a doctorate degree with a major in physics.
